aimed at setting up of CPN in Mangu and officially launch Child Protection Network (CPN). . In line with CPN mandate, UNICEF D’ Field Bauchi assigned CPN to work with Ministry of Women Affairs to set up CPN in three Local Government in Plateau State. Riyom, Barkin- Ladi and Mangu. Plateau State Child Protection Network (CPN) has an overall goal of preventing and responding to exploitation, abuse/ violence and neglect of children (boys and girls) and ensuring children’s protection in Plateau State. CPN was introduced to participants for the purpose of knowing the goals and activities of CPN and how it carried out their activities. Thereafter, the participants were educated on the CPN Code of Conduct and Terms of Reference. The rationale for it was to provide basic standard rules for membership and guiding principles for the implementation of the activities mandated by both Plateau State Child’s Rights Law and the UN Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) on 1612 on monitoring, reporting of and responding (MRR) to core violations of Children’s rights. On the 29th January 2015, INTERCEP in conjunction with Lucky Okoedion (A personal CDS) organized a 1 (one) day training tagged Human Rights and peaceful co-existence held at St. Lukes’s College Kufang Jos. Wase Local Government Area of Plateau State is a community dominated by Muslims but with aid of constructive advocacy visits to the religious and community leaders in the 3 (three) communities of Wase, Lamba and Marafa. The 5 pillars are prevention, protection, promotion, participation and prosecution and these tools are the tools that deprive women’s rights in issues that affect them and if addressed will contribute to increased women participation to peace building and reduce discrimination against them. The outcomes of the trainings were that:

Religious and community leaders bought-in the project. The skills and knowledge of the stakeholders were equipped with the 5

pillars contained in the State Action Plan and are willing to reduce violence against women and girls thereby actively involving women in decision making and participation in peace building process.

Women skill acquisition programme16

Page 18: s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com€¦  · Web viewMISSION. INTERCEP aims at promoting the basic values of freedoms and liberties in a peaceful environment in order to foster both individual

Education- Primary 1 through Adult Classes Computer classes Building unity in the community and among persons

Secondly, the seminar was to share ideas and experiences on the following topics:

To look into the conflict and crises areas To buttress that action speaks louder than voice To let parents know that passing down the hatred and pains crises has caused

to their children will only cause them more pain and more harm. Therefore, they should instil love into the children and make them see others as humans.

Thirdly, a documentary on the conflict in Northern Ireland, Belfast from 1969-1998 was viewed and compared to the crises in Jos from 2001-2015. Jos, plateau State was portrayed as a non-religious conflict, Catholic versus Protestants, a civic conflict raged from 1969-1998, 1, 600 people died and agreement/treaty reached in 1998.

How are we going to change the society to see things differently?

Teach children not to hate so that the crisis and pains will go away. Conflict Resolution Gradual disappearance of no-go areas. Breeding hatred which fuels the crises more should stop. There should be agents of change. Be security conscious. Positive economic activities and self-reliance. Parent should have a good child raising philosophy that we all are humans

and are equal. Love should be our watch word: We should know that we humans first

before race, tribe and religion separated us. We should love ourselves irrespective of religion and tribe.

Have forums for building relationships where the two religions can co-exist and in turn build a brighter and better future.

Proper orientation on security and support to the vigilante groups and teaching youth’s leadership qualities.

We should share together the things that bind us and put away things that bring conflict.

We should be advocates of peace wherever we find ourselves.

A food of thought: No one can change another individual but we can make the change by our actions and the way we think. There are no physical walls in Jos but there are walls in our hearts and we should try as much as possible to break down those walls and live in peace. We are advised to take time and know someone. We should build relationships so that we can grow together. We should see other people as humans just like ourselves. We should listen more to our hearts and we should not also allow assumptions instigate

17

Page 19: s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com€¦  · Web viewMISSION. INTERCEP aims at promoting the basic values of freedoms and liberties in a peaceful environment in order to foster both individual

violence in us but learn the truth about people and learn to co-exist. Let us be mouth piece of peace in the society and be advocates of peace and remember you do not need the permission from anyone else to love someone. Live for peace and live in peace.
