MOUNT OLIVET UNITED METHODIST CHURCH Charlie’s Blessings There are families in our area who need a little help, especially during the holidays. It was Charlie Moreau’s mission to provide a small blessing to those in need by delivering a turkey dinner basket to them the Sunday before Thanksgiving. It is a way to share our blessings with others. Charlie and his church family at Mount Olivet United Methodist Church began delivering baskets in November 2001 and have been doing so every year since then. His church family has continued this blessing in Charlie’s memory after his death in March 2005, by renaming the “Turkey Dinner Blessing” to “Charlie’s Blessings”. It is our hope to provide baskets to as many needy families as possible each year. Therefore, we would appreciate it if you would provide us with names, addresses, and telephone numbers of any families who could benefit from this blessing. The baskets will be delivered to the families the Sunday before Thanksgiving or they may pick them up from the church that day. Whichever is more convenient or comfortable for them. Please contact Mount Olivet United Methodist Church 245 Mount Olivet Lane Danville, VA 24540. You can call the church at 434-799-8789 or email [email protected]. Charlie’s BlessingsThere are families in our area who need a little

help, especially during the holidays. It was Charlie Moreau’s mission to provide a small

blessing to those in need by delivering a turkey dinner basket to them the Sunday before

Thanksgiving. It is a way to share our blessings with others.

Charlie and his church family at Mount Olivet United Methodist Church began delivering

baskets in November 2001 and have been doing so every year since then. His church family has

continued this blessing in Charlie’s memory after his death in March 2005, by renaming the

“Turkey Dinner Blessing” to “Charlie’s Blessings”.

It is our hope to provide baskets to as many needy families as possible each year. Therefore, we would appreciate it if you would provide us

with names, addresses, and telephone numbers of any families who could benefit from this

blessing. The baskets will be delivered to the families the Sunday before Thanksgiving or they

may pick them up from the church that day. Whichever is more convenient or comfortable for

Last month we talked about the apportionments for the Virginia Annual Conference of United Methodist Church. This month I wanted to spend some time talking about the General Church apportionments. Only 19 % of our apportionments are for the operation of the General Church. Which means out of $22,944 only $4359.36 goes towards the expenses of the General Church some of which are more mission minded than actual expenses. As noted last month 54% or $12,389.76 of our apportionments funds the health insurance costs for retired and actively clergy. When we pay the apportionments towards the General Church here’s what we are funding:

World Service Fund: Trying to describe the ways the World Service Fund contributes to The United Methodist Church requires the use of many “ands.” It helps build new churches and pay the salaries of missionaries and expand Bible studies and provide leadership for youth ministry, and much more. World Service is the financial lifeline to a long list of Christian mission and ministry throughout the denomination. The Word Service Fund is how we fund mission work!Africa University Fund: Africa University is the only General Conference–approved degree-granting institution of higher education supported by The United Methodist Church on the continent of Africa. Men and women from 27 countries in Africa receive postsecondary education and postgraduate degrees. When we support the Africa University Fund, we nurture students in Christian values and develop visionary leaders. Education is fundamental and it is also another mission! Ministerial Education Fund: This fund is essential for The United Methodist Church to continue its commitment to recruit and educate quality pastoral leadership. Helping to defray the steep costs of getting a seminary education (normally costing $100,000 or more in school related costs just for seminary! This doesn’t include the cost of undergrad), the Ministerial Education Fund is one way The United Methodist Church supports those who are called into ordained and licensed ministry. The fund also equips our annual conferences with local pastor courses of study, continuing education and many other efforts to recruit, educate and support people called to ordained and licensed ministry.

Black College Fund: Through The Black College Fund, The United Methodist Church helps the 11 historically Black United Methodist–related colleges and universities to maintain solid, challenging academic programs, strong faculties and well-equipped facilities. Their graduates are leaders nationally and internationally. Episcopal Fund: Bishops are an integral part of the spiritual and administrative leadership of The United Methodist Church. Bishops are elected and consecrated to speak to the church and from the church. This fund pays our bishops’ salaries and covers office and travel expenses; it also provides pension and health benefit coverage. We pay 528 dollars towards this fund…in essence apportionments are not solely paying for the salary of the bishop.Interdenominational Cooperation Fund: The Interdenominational Cooperation Fund enables United Methodists to have a presence and a voice in the activities of several national and worldwide ecumenical and interreligious organizations. It provides the United Methodist share of the basic budgets of these organizations and pays for the travel expenses of United Methodist representatives. We for example participate in the World Council of Churches.General Administration Fund: This fund attends to the business of The United Methodist Church by ensuring trustworthy systems of oversight and financial accountability. The General Administration Fund finances the administrative activities of the church, in addition to underwriting the basic costs of General Conference, funding work of the Judicial Council, maintaining United Methodist official documents and historical artifacts, and designating historical shrines, landmarks and sites. This is the “business side of church” which costs our church only 250 dollars per the coming year.I hope that through last month’s newsletter and this month’s newsletter that you will see that our apportionments do not line the pockets of others but are used in mission. Through the faithful payment of our apportionments we get to be the hands in feet of Christ in many different places and in many different ways.

Blessings and Peace,
