CHARLIE’S BLESSINGSThere are families in the area who need a little help,

especially during the holidays. It was Charlie Moreau’s mission to provide a small blessing to those in need by

delivering a turkey dinner basket to them the Sunday before Thanksgiving. It is a way to share our blessings with others.

Charlie and his church family at Mount Olivet United Methodist Church began delivering baskets in November 2001, and have been doing so every year since then. His

church family has continued this blessing in Charlie’s memory after his death in March 2005, by renaming the “Turkey

Dinner Blessing” to “Charlie’s Blessings”.

It is our hope to provide baskets to as many needy families as possible each year. Therefore, we would appreciate it if you

could provide us with names, addresses and telephone numbers of any families who could benefit from this blessing.

The baskets will be delivered to the families the Sunday before Thanksgiving, or they may be picked up from the

church, whichever is more convenient.

The Musings of Pastor Jimmy

This month you get the musings of Secretary Bobbie

As we all know Pastor Jimmy and his family have had some pretty major blows lately. Not only did he have major surgery, but his hero, the man who raised him passed away the next day. We have all had him and the family in prayer since this happened, but I

invite you to consider keeping him on your prayer list even after he comes back.

Being a pastor is not an easy job. You see him work on Sunday and maybe a couple other days a week, but what you don’t realize is that he is always working. I can’t tell

you how many times a day I get texts from him about things that need to be done, or he would like to do. He thinks about us as a church almost 24/7.

We have seen many changes in the church under his leadership, outreach has increased dramatically. It should be our goal as a church body, to reach as many people as we can to tell them about Jesus. In order to do that, we need a strong leader and teacher. How

can we expect to have that without prayer?

I urge you to pray for all pastors doing God’s work. We need to remember to lift them up. They have an incredible burden on their hearts and their shoulders, to be there for

us and everyone else in the community.

COLLECTION DAY FOR SHOEBOXES - November 12

We encourage each family to pack at least one shoebox. This is an excellent project for your family to give a special Christmas gift to a needy child.

Below are gift suggestions that I have combined with the new list for this year along with the best gifts list from a missionary. (Highlighted items are “great gifts.”)

Personal Care Items: Comb. Hairbrush. Toothbrush. Washcloth. Bar soap (with a container). Adhesive bandages. Reusable plastic containers: cup, water bottle, plate, bowl, blunt-edged utensils. Blanket. Ages 10-14: Non-liquid lip balm, Flashlight (small–do not forget packaged batteries). Compact mirror, Nail clipper

and file, Stick deodorant, Washable/reusable cloth menstrual pads.

Clothing and Accessories: Shirts (short sleeved white or solid colors, stripes-no pictures) and pants. Pillowcase dress (loose-fitting sundress). Underwear. Shoes and socks. Flip-flops. Sunglasses. Tote bag/purse. Hair

bows/elastics. Friendship bracelets (woven with yarn or embroidery thread).Ages 10-14: Decorative hat. Wrist watch-simple. Bead jewelry/bead kit. Hair accessories (hair clips, hair

ribbons, elastic hair bands, etc.)

Crafts and Activites/School Supplies: Pencils. Erasers. Small manual pencil sharpener. Colored pencils. Pencil case. Crayons. Markers. Pens. Coloring pads/books. Picture book. Notebooks. Safety scissors (blunt tip).

Glue stick (Do not include liquid glue). Small adhesive tape. Jump rope. Puzzles.Older children: Pens. Ruler. Protractor. Solared powered calculator. Chalkboard and chalk. Binoculars. Sewing kit, fabric (1-2 yards), and ribbon. Laminated decorative pictures with looped ribbon attached as a

picture hanger. Gardening kit with gloves and trowel hand tool (Do not include gardening seeds). Playing cards. Boy - ages 5-9, 10-14 and girl 10-14: Backpack.

Toys: Doll (light brown skin, no hair, maybe include clothes or small bed). Soccer ball (Make sure to include a manual air pump so that the ball can be reinflated.) (Football for older boys). Toy truck, car, or airplane.

Foam ball. Kickball (Make sure to include a manual air pump so that the ball can be reinflated). Finger puppets. Slinky. Etch A Sketch. Interactive toys that include push buttons, lights, noise (include extra batteries). Costume items to play dress-up, such as crowns and costume jewelry. Plastic toys and toy figures. Small Frisbee. Small

kite. Kaleidoscope, Marbles. Harmonica.Remember: Instructions in English they cannot read. Make sure products are universal.

A note: You may enclose a note to the child and a photo of yourself, your family, or group. If you include your name and an address, the child may be able to write back. You can also track this on line.

Do Not Include Candy; toothpaste; used or damaged items; war-related items such as toy guns, knives, or military figures;

chocolate or food; seeds; fruit rolls or other fruit snacks; drink mixes (powdered or liquid); any type of liquids or lotions; medications or vitamins; breakable items such as snow globes or glass containers; aerosol cans.

Youth – Betsy KentSuccessful Mission trip, resuming regular schedule today. Council met Wednesday night to plan calendar for the year.Planning to do the Candy Cane Fundraiser again. Would like to have a small bounce house and dunking booth at Harvest Day along with face painting. Stacey Moreau motioned to approve rental of bounce house and dunking booth, as long as it can be cancelled, Melanie Cockram seconded. Approved none opposed.

KFC – Pastor JimmyKicked off yesterday, so no activities today. Successful summer activities.

Trustees – Bill KentAlmost finished with youth room remodel, some molding left to replace. Glenn Dillion pointed out that pictures should be taken and sent to insurance company as proof of repair.Still planning to do the nursery and bathroom enclosure. Motioned to set aside $650 of insurance money for nursery project and repair of a leaking toilet, and move remaining $1,604.23 to the general fund to be used for conference dues. Stacey Moreau seconded, approved none opposed.Looking at some boards to help with sound in the Christian Life Center.The food pantry construction is finished and it is ready to stock. Would like to open on Harvest Day, so bring in non-perishable food items.

Worship Committee – Pastor JimmyHarvest Day is October 7, Pack the Church is October 8. Sunday schedule is worship at 11am, lunch at 12pm, and piano concert at 1:30pm.Laity Sunday is October 15 with speaker Miranda Bryant.

Homecoming is November 5 with Bruce Tuttle as guest preacher.Committee left Harvest Day as is this year, but UMM would like to move 2018 Harvest Day to Homecoming Weekend. There’s a better chance of selling 2 pots of stew the first Saturday in November than in October. UMM will still have a stew the first Saturday of October, but no other activities. Andy Mills motioned to approve this change, Stacey Moreau seconded. Approved none opposed.

PPR Committee – Steve KentMet on August 30 to discuss salaries. Will send recommendations to the Finance Committee.

Sunday School – Pastor JimmyPlease invite people to Sunday School.Next week 5th graders will move up to Middle School class.

Lay Leader – Glenn DillionNominations Committee will meet this week, asking everyone to carefully consider the commitment to jobs carefully before agreeing to take on role. The tables and chairs have been changed throughout the campus. Old tables are in CLC for stews, yard sale, etc.Wooden chairs have been sold by JW Thomasson in the past, but he said they don’t sell as well now. Agreement among board members to try to sell the chairs at Harvest Day for $15 each.While cleaning out the old pantry, 4 punch bowl sets were found. Do we keep these or get rid of them? Circle of Friends will decide what to do with them.Also found choir robes in the old choir room, Mike Bennington doesn’t want them. Would like to keep 4 beige robes for shepherds in plays, and donate the others. Council agreed.

Circle of Friends – Cheryl RichardsonMet in June, and meet again September 11.Will do Hot Dogs, BBQ, nachos, etc. for Harvest Day. Also, would appreciate any cake and/or pie donations. BBQ will be ready the Thursday before, if anyone would like to help prepare for sale. Will also hold silent auction again, forms are available in the Narthex. Please donate baskets and items for this project. A sign-up sheet with theme will be in the Narthex this week.Would like to set up food sales outside, but silent auction tables must be inside.Currently working with KFC on a mission project. Have contributed donations to Marion Fulton Scholarship and a few other causes.

UMM – Andy MillsMet today, hosting Harvest Day this year and voted to do only 1 & ½ pots of stew this year. Yard sale/craft tables will be available for $10 rental. Bobbie will start advertising this.Donated $200 to flood relief in Texas.Will have church cleanup day on 9-23, with a rain date of 9-30.

VBS – Stacey MoreauAll went well, averaged over 30 kids per night which is normal for this area.

Education Committee – Melanie CockramSent giftcards to college students in April, and would like to do again this semester.9 Students received a $300 Marion Fulton Scholarship.

Sisters in Praise – Melanie CockramWould like us to know that the teachers are not paid. The group does buy the music used. Have bought a speaker which stays here at Mt. Olivet. Cost is $2 per class, and donations are consistently made to the church from this fund.Have made 2 $1000 donations, 1 $1800 donation, 1 $200 donation, and currently have a member undergoing treatment so plan to help with those hospital bills.

Current goal is to raise $500 for Harvey relief. If able to meet that goal, someone is willing to make it a $1500 donation.

Other BusinessJoan Holley raised concern about cars being for sale on the church grounds, Pastor Jimmy will contact owner and have them remove vehicle.Bobbie Dillion mentioned the need for a Middle School Youth Leader. Michelle can’t be here much this year, and Bobbie is helping, but cannot volunteer long term.

Pastor ReportThis was a busy summer with Summer Splash, UMARMY visit, and mission trip.Hamilton bible study went well, now starting Jonah, which finish by surgery on October 13.Stacey will start a Beth Moore study on October 15, it will last until pastor returns.Stacey Moreau is in charge of filling the pulpit during the pastor’s absence.Lay Leadership Committee will be seriously looking at who will fill volunteer spots. The most important things looked at when visitors come is Greeters, Nursery, and Children’s Church. Volunteers should never be an afterthought. If you volunteer you must be there!Plan to challenge for funding of summer events. Worship Committee talked about other people taking roles during service, planning is underway for that.Directory proofbooks will be on their way soon. They will be available for review, then any corrections needed will be made. Hoping to have directories by November.Charge Conference is October 29, 2pm at Fairview. Administrative Council will meet October 1 at 2pm to review Charge Conference Documents.

Reason for Meeting

Pastor Jimmy asked for permission to use up to $300 to finish the directory. This will pay for 2 extra activity pages and extra member photos. Mentioned that we hope to have directories finished by Thanksgiving.

Lois Kent suggested that Circle of Friends and UMM pay this bill.

Melanie Cockram motioned to allow this money be used to finish the directory and decide who will pay it when the bill comes, Dianne Harr seconded. Approved none opposed.

Other Business
