A lucid assesment on our

society’s choices about

drinking water

Bottled and SoldThe Story Behind Our

Obsession with Bottled Water

Peter Gleick knows water. A world-renowned sci-entist and freshwater expert, Gleick is a MacArthur Foundation “genius,” and according to the BBC, an environmental visionary. And he drinks from the tap. Why don’t the rest of us?

Bottled and Sold shows how water went from being a free natural resource to one of the most success-ful commercial products of the last one hundred years—and why we are poorer for it. It’s a big story and water is big business. Every second of every day in the United States, a thousand people buy a plastic bottle of water, and every second of every day a thousand more throw one of those bottles away. That adds up to more than thirty billion bottles a year and tens of billions of dollars of sales.

Are there legitimate reasons to buy all those bottles? With a scientist’s eye and a natural storyteller’s wit, Gleick investigates whether industry claims about the relative safety, convenience, and taste of bottled versus tap hold water. And he exposes the true reasons we’ve turned to the bottle, from fearmongering by business interests and our own vanity to the breakdown of public systems and global inequities.

“Designer” H2O may be laughable, but the debate over com-modifying water is deadly serious. It comes down to society’s choices about human rights, the role of government and free markets, the importance of being “green,” and fundamental val-ues. Gleick gets to the heart of the bottled water craze, exploring what it means for us to bottle and sell our most basic necessity.

Smart PowerPeter Fox-Penner

Peter Fox-Penner is a consulting executive and an internationally recognized

authority on energy and electric power industry issues. Dr. Fox-Penner is a

principal and chairman emeritus of The Brattle Group, a leading international

economic consulting firm.

New developments in the discussions of climate change and con-servation of energy are prompting utilities to undergo the largest changes in their history, transforming them from regulated com-modity energy fi rms to low-carbon network operators. The combi-nation of industry structure, regulation, and business mission that utilities adopted more than a century ago must be retooled for an era with different priorities, a different mission for utilities, and very different utility technologies.

Smart Power examines the many facets of this transformation in thorough but non-technical terms. From the options for long-term power generation, to the policy choices and regulatory reform needed to accomplish the nation’s goals, to new strategies for the development of an effi ciency-focused business model, Peter Fox-Penner provides clear and lively guidance through a thoroughly transformed landscape of power generation.

Climate 2030A National Blueprint for a Clean Energy Economy

Rachel Cleetus, Steven Clemmer, and

David Friedman

Climate 2030: A National Blueprint for a Clean Energy Economy is a peer-reviewed analysis of the economic and technological potential for a comprehensive suite of climate, energy, and transportation solutions and policies to greatly reduce U.S. global warming emissions and help get us on a path to avoiding some of the worst impacts of climate change. The results demonstrate that meeting stringent near- and medium-term emissions caps in the United States is feasible and can be done cost-effectively. This analysis is an important contribution to the U.S. and international climate policy debates.

Solutions

In 2009, Rolling Stone named Joe Romm to its list of “100 People Who Are Changing America.” Romm is a climate expert, physicist, energy consultant, and former offi cial in the Department of Energy. But it’s his infl uential blog, one of the “Top Fifteen Green Websites” according to Time magazine, that’s caught national attention. Climate change is far more urgent than people understand, Romm says, and traditional media, scientists, and politicians are missing the story.

Straight Up draws on Romm’s most important posts to explain the dangers of and solutions to climate change that you won’t fi nd in newspapers, in journals, or on T.V. Compared to coverage of Jay-Z or the latest philandering politician, climate change makes up a patheti-cally small share of news reports. And when journalists do try to tackle this complex issue, they often lack the background to tell the full story. Despite the dearth of reporting, polls show that two in fi ve Americans think the press is actually exaggerating the threat of climate change. That gives Big Oil, and others with a vested interest in the status quo, a huge opportunity to mislead the public.

Romm cuts through the misinformation and presents the truth about humanity’s most dire threat. His analysis is based on sophisticated knowledge of renewable technologies, climate impacts, and govern-ment policy, written in a style everyone can understand. Romm shows how a 20 percent reduction in global emissions over the next quarter century could improve the economy; how we can replace most coal and with what technologies; why Sarah Palin wears a polar bear pin; and why controversial, emerging technologies like biochar have to be part of the solution.

The ultimate solution, Romm argues, is bigger than any individual technology: it’s citizen action. Without public pressure, Washington and industry don’t budge. With it, our grandkids might just have a habitable place to live.

Wade Davis has spent more than three years in the Amazon and Andes as a plant

explorer, and later went to Haiti to investigate folk preparations implicated in the

creation of zombies. The Haiti assignment led to his writing The Serpent and the

Rainbow (Simon and Schuster, 1986), an international bestseller that was later

released as a feature motion picture. Among his other books are Nomads of the

Dawn (Pomegranate Press, 1995), Passage of Darkness (University of North Carolina

Press, 1988), and One River (Simon and Schuster, 1996).

Wade Davis has been called “a rare combination of scientist, scholar, poet and passionate defender of all of life’s diversity.” In Shadows in the Sun, he brings all of those gifts to bear on a fascinating examina-tion of indigenous cultures and the interactions between human societies and the natural world.

Ranging from the British Columbian wilderness to the jungles of the Amazon and the polar ice of the Arctic Circle, Shadows in the Sun is a testament to a world where spirits still stalk the land and seize the human heart. Its essays and stories, though distilled from travels in widely separated parts of the world, are fundamentally about land-scape and character, the wisdom of lives drawn directly from the land, the hunger of those who seek to rediscover such understanding, and the consequences of failure.

China’s struggle for sustainability

Where the Dragon

Meets the Angry River

Nature and Power in the

People’s Republic of China

China’s meteoric rise to economic powerhouse might be charted with dams. Every river in the country has been tapped to power exploding cities and facto-ries—every river but one. Running through one of the richest natural areas in the world, the Nujiang’s raging waters were on the verge of being dammed when a 2004 government moratorium halted con-struction. Might the Chinese dragon bow to the “Angry River“? Would Beijing put local people and their land ahead of power and profi t? Could this remote region actually become a model for sustainable growth?

Ed Grumbine traveled to the far corners of China’s Yunnan province to fi nd out. He was driven by a single question: could this last frag-ment of wild nature withstand China’s unrelenting development? But as he hiked through deep-cut emerald mountains, backcountry villages, and burgeoning tourist towns, talking with trekking guides, schoolchildren, and rural farmers, he discovered that the problem wasn’t as simple as growth versus conservation.

In its struggle to “build a well-off society in an all-round way,” Beijing juggles a host of competing priorities: health care for impov-erished villagers; habitat for threatened tigers; cars for a growing middle class; clean air for all citizens; energy to power new cities; rubber for the global marketplace.

Where the Dragon Meets the Angry River is an incisive look at the possible fates of China and the planet. Will the Angry River continue to fl ow? Will Tibetan girls from subsistence farming families learn to read and write? Can China and the United States come together to lead action on climate change? Far-reaching in its history and scope, this unique book shows us the real-world consequences of conser-vation and development decisions now being made in Beijing and beyond.

New Books

Five Easy Pieces

Five Easy Pieces features fi ve contributions, origi-nally published in Nature and Science, demon-strating the massive impacts of modern industrial fi sheries on marine ecosystems. Initially published over an eight-year period, from 1995 to 2003, these

articles illustrate a transition in scientifi c thought—from the initially contested realization that the crisis of fi sheries and their underlying ocean ecosystems was, in fact, global to its broad acceptance by mainstream scientifi c and public opinion.

Daniel Pauly, a well-known fi sheries expert who was a co-au-thor of all fi ve articles, presents each original article here and surrounds it with a rich array of contemporary comments, many of which led Pauly and his colleagues to further study. In ad-dition, Pauly documents how popular media reported on the articles and their fi ndings. By doing so, he demonstrates how science evolves. In one chapter, for example, the popular media pick up a contribution and use Pauly’s conclusions to contextu-alize current political disputes; in another, what might be seen as nitpicking by fellow scientists leads Pauly and his colleagues to strengthen their case that commercial fi shing is endangering the global marine ecosystem. This structure also allows read-ers to see how scientists’ interactions with the popular media can shape the reception of their own, sometimes controversial, scientifi c studies.

In an epilog, Pauly refl ects on the ways that scientifi c consensus emerges from discussions both within and outside the scientifi c community.

Keystone Predators, Trophic

Cascades, and Biodiversity

Cristina Eisenberg

The Wolf’s Tooth

Animals such as wolves, sea otters, and sharks exert a disproportionate infl uence on their environ-ment; dramatic ecological consequences can result when they are removed from—or returned to—an ecosystem.

In The Wolf’s Tooth, scientist and author Cristina Eisenberg explores the concept of “trophic cascades” and the role of top predators in regulating ecosystems. Her fascinating and wide-ranging work provides clear explanations of the science sur-rounding keystone predators and considers how this notion can help provide practical solutions for restoring ecosystem health and functioning.

Eisenberg examines both general concepts and specifi c issues, sharing accounts from her own fi eldwork to illustrate and bring to life the ideas she presents. She considers how resource manag-ers can use knowledge about trophic cascades to guide recovery efforts, including how this science can be applied to move forward the bold vision of rewilding the North American continent. In the end, the author provides her own recommendations for local and landscape-scale applications of what has been learned about interactive food webs.

At their most fundamental level, trophic cascades are powerful stories about ecosystem processes—of predators and their prey, of what it takes to survive in a landscape, of the fl ow of nutrients. The Wolf’s Tooth is the fi rst book to focus on the vital connection between trophic cascades and restoring biodiversity and habitats, and to do so in a way that is accessible to a diverse readership.

From the beginning of his career, Peter Calthorpe has been a leading innovator in sustainable build-ing projects, sustainable development, and walk-able communities. A leader in the New Urbanism Movement, he is an important resource for solutions to current problems of urban sprawl, suburban isola-tion, and the related problems of outsized energy

consumption and an outsized share of world emissions.

According to Urbanism in the Age of Climate Change, relentless and thoughtless development has created a way of living that brings us to a point of reckoning regarding energy, climate change, and the way we shape our communities. The answer to these crises is sustain-able development, a thoughtful combination of good urbanism with renewable energy sources, state-of-the-art conservation techniques, new green technologies, and integrated services and utilities. Sustain-able urbanism, the most recent result of Calthorpe’s forward thinking, provides all the inherent benefi ts of urbanism amplifi ed by a new generation of ecological design, smart grids, climate responsive build-ings, electric cars, and next-generation transit systems.

This clearly written (and clearly provocative) work emerges from Calthorpe’s belief that, just as the last fi fty years have produced mas-sive changes in our culture, economy, and environment, the next fi fty will generate changes of an even more profound nature. The book, enhanced by its superb graphic design, is an exploration of the chal-lenges and potential shifts in each of these arenas, and how they can affect the future of our communities.

Cities for People

For more than forty years Jan Gehl has helped to transform urban environments around the world based on his research into the ways people actu-ally use—or could use—the spaces where they live and work. In this revolutionary book, Gehl presents his latest work creating (or re-creating) cityscapes on a human scale. He clearly explains the methods and tools he uses to reconfi gure unworkable cityscapes into the landscapes he believes they should be: cities for people.

Taking into account changing demographics and changing lifestyles, Gehl emphasizes four human issues that he sees as essential to successful city planning. He explains how to develop cities that are lively, safe, sustainable, and healthy. Focusing on these issues leads Gehl to think of even the largest city on a very small scale. For Gehl, the urban landscape must be considered through the fi ve human senses and experienced at the speed of walking rather than at the speed of riding in a car or bus or train. This small-scale view, he argues, is too frequently neglected in contemporary projects.

In a fi nal chapter, Gehl makes a plea for city planning on a hu-man scale in the fast-growing cities of developing countries. A “Toolbox,” presenting key principles, overviews of methods, and keyword lists, concludes the book.

The book is extensively illustrated with more than seven hundred photos and drawings of examples from Gehl’s work around the globe.

Water EthicsFoundational Readings for Students and Professionals

Edited by Peter G. Brown and Jeremy J. Schmidt

Peter G. Brown is a Professor in the Departments of Natural Resource Sciences,

Geography, and School of the Environment at McGill University. He is author

of Restoring the Public Trust and The Commonwealth of Life: Economics for a

Flourishing Earth, and coauthor of Right Relationship: Building a Whole Earth

The world’s emerging water crisis has ignited efforts to reconnect policy to human values. According to the book, all approaches to managing water, no matter how grounded in empirical data, involve moral judg-ments and cultural assumptions.

Each of the book’s six sections discusses a different approach to think-ing about the relationship between water and humanity, from utilitari-anism to eco-feminism to religious beliefs. Contributors range from Bartholomew, Ecumenical Patriarch of the Orthodox Church, to Nobel Laureate Elinor Ostrom and water policy expert Sandra Postel. Water Ethics will help readers understand how various moral perspectives have guided and will continue to guide water policy around the globe.

relationship with water and the world

Water SecurityWorld Economic Forum Water Initiative

At the 2008 Davos Annual Meeting, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon identifi ed water as “the climate adaptation issue,” directing the World Economic Forum to assemble the world’s foremost group of public, pri-vate, non-governmental-organization and academic experts to examine

the impending global water crisis from all perspectives.

The result of their work is this forecast—a stark, non-technical overview of where we will be by 2025 if we continue to (mis)manage our water resources. Water Security contains compelling commentary from lead-ing decision-makers, past and present. The commentary is supported by analysis from leading academics of how the world economy will be

affected if world leaders cannot agree on solutions.

The fi ndings are shocking. Perhaps equally stunning are the potential solutions and the recommendations that the group presents. All are included in this landmark publication.

Since 2006, the World Economic Forum Water Initiative has raised awareness of the

need to manage our future water needs and the challenge to economic and social

security if we fail to do so. Its work has helped catalyze several major initiatives in

water management around the world.

Water Resources

In this concise introduction to water resources, Shimon Anisfeld explores the fundamental interactions between humans and water, including drinking, sanitation, irriga-tion, and power production. The book familiarizes stu-dents with the current water crisis and with approaches for managing this essential resource more effectively in a time of rapid environmental and social change. Anisfeld addresses both human and ecological problems, including scarcity, pollution, disease, fl ooding, confl icts over water, and degradation of aquatic ecosystems. In addition to providing the background necessary to understand each of these problems, the book discusses ways to move toward better management and addresses the key current debates in the water policy fi eld.

In the past, water development has often proceeded in a single-sec-tor fashion, with each group of users implementing its own plans without coordination with other groups, resulting in both confl ict and ineffi ciency. Now, Anisfeld writes, the challenge of water man-agement is fi guring out how to balance all the different demands for water, from sanitation to energy generation to ecosystem protection.

For inquiring students of any level, Water Resources provides a com-prehensive one-volume guide to a complex but vital fi eld of study.

A new, practice-based

environmental physics text

that emphasizes critical

reasoning

Foundations of Environmental Physics is designed to focus students on the current energy and environmental problems facing society, and to give them the critical thinking and computational skills needed to sort out potential solutions. From its pedagogical approach, students learn that a simple calculation based on fi rst principles can often reveal the plausibility (or implausibility) of a proposed solution or new technology.

Throughout its chapters, the text asks students to apply key concepts to current data (which they are required to locate using the Inter-net and other sources) to get a clearer picture of the most pressing issues in environmental science. The text begins by exploring how changes in world population impact all aspects of the environment, particularly with respect to energy use. It then discusses what the fi rst and second laws of thermodynamics tell us about renewable and nonrenewable energy; how current energy use is changing the global climate; and how alternative technologies can be evaluated through scientifi c risk assessment. In approaching real-world problems, students come to understand the physical principles that underlie scientifi c fi ndings.

This informative and engaging textbook offers what prospective scientists, managers, and policymakers need most: the knowledge to understand environmental threats and the skills to fi nd solutions.

Ecological EconomicsPrinciples and Applications

In its fi rst edition, this book helped to defi ne the emerging fi eld of ecological economics. This new edition surveys the fi eld today. It incorporates all of the latest research fi ndings and grounds economic inquiry in a more robust understanding of human needs and behavior. Humans and ecological systems, it argues,

are inextricably bound together in complex and long-misun-derstood ways.

According to ecological economists, conventional economics does not refl ect adequately the value of essential factors like clean air and water, species diversity, and social and genera-tional equity. By excluding biophysical and social systems from their analyses, many conventional economists have overlooked problems of the increasing scale of human impacts and the inequitable distribution of resources.

This introductory-level textbook is designed specifi cally to address this signifi cant fl aw in economic thought. The book describes a relatively new “transdiscipline” that incorporates insights from the biological, physical, and social sciences. It provides students with a foundation in traditional neoclassi-cal economic thought, but places that foundation within an interdisciplinary framework that embraces the linkages among economic growth, environmental degradation, and social inequity. In doing so, it presents a revolutionary way of viewing the world.

The second edition of Ecological Economics provides a clear, readable, and easy-to-understand overview of a fi eld of study that continues to grow in importance. It remains the only stand-alone textbook that offers a complete explanation of theory and practice in the discipline.

Escape from the Ivory Tower

Most scientists and researchers aren’t prepared to talk to the press or to policymakers—or to deal with backlash. And many researchers have the horror sto-ries to prove it. As Nancy Baron points out, scientists who decide they want to inform those outside their own research arena and help guide public discourse need to learn a new set of skills. No matter what your scientifi c specialty is, writes Baron, the keys to success are thinking clearly, knowing what you want to say, understanding your audience, and using everyday language to get your main points across. Devel-oping these skills is the object of this book.

According to Baron, scientists, journalists, and policymakers repre-sent three very different cultures. Speaking effectively to journal-ists and policymakers—the people who make scientists’ fi ndings available to the general public—requires scientists to learn a new language. In this clear and understandable guide to “communicat-ing science,” Baron explains to scientists how to engage an audience, how to tell why a particular fi nding matters, and how to describe research in an interesting way. She explains to journalists how to develop the same skills for explaining science. The book includes case studies from journalists and from some of the more than four thousand scientists Baron has trained in communication workshops. Many of her trainees have gone on to become well-known spokes-people for science-related issues. The book is accompanied by an interactive website maintained by Baron herself.

A former journalist, Nancy Baron is a motivated promoter for clearly communicat-

ing the public implications of scientific findings. She has spent most of the past

eight years training scientists to better communicate science to the media and the

public. During this time she has worked with more than four thousand scientists

and many journalists and NGO professionals. Escape from the Ivory Tower is a

direct result of her experience.

Community Character

Lane H. Kendig

Community Character provides a design-oriented system for planning and zoning communities butaccounts for how people who participate in a com-munity live, work, and shop there. The relationships that Lane Kendig defi nes here refl ect the complexity of the interaction of the built environment with its social and economic uses, taking into account the

diverse desires of municipalities and citizens. Among the many classifi cations for a community’s “character” are its relationship to other communities, its size, and the resulting social and economic characteristics.

According to Kendig, most comprehensive plans and zoning regu-lations are based entirely on density and land use, neither of which effectively or consistently measures character or quality of devel-opment. As Kendig shows, there is a wide range of measures that defi ne character and these vary with the type of character a com-munity desires to create. Taking a much more comprehensive view, this book offers “community character” as a real-world framework for planning for communities of all kinds and sizes.

A companion book, A Guide to Planning with Community Character, provides a detailed explanation of applying community character in a comprehensive plan, with chapters on designing urban, subur-ban, and rural character types, using character in comprehensive plans, and strategies for addressing characteristic challenges of planning and zoning in the twenty-fi rst century.

Lane H. Kendig is the founder and former president of Kendig Keast

Collaborative, a planning consulting firm with offices in Chicago, Houston,

Wisconsin, and Colorado. He has been practicing and writing about the rela-

tionship between community design planning and regulatory tools for more

than forty years. He is the author of Performance Zoning and Too Big, Boring,

Seven Rules for

Sustainable Cities

Design Strategies for the

Post Carbon World

Patrick M. Condon

Foreword by Robert Yaro

Questions of how to green the North American economy, create a green energy and transporta-tion infrastructure, and halt the deadly increase in greenhouse gas buildup dominate our daily news. Related questions of how the design of cities can impact these chal-lenges dominate the thoughts of urban planners and designers across the United States and Canada. With admirable clarity, Patrick Condon discusses transportation, housing equity, job distribution, economic development, and ecological systems issues and synthesizes his knowl-edge and research into a simple-to-understand set of urban design rules that can, if followed, help save the planet.

No other book so clearly connects the form of our cities to their ecological, economic, and social consequences. No other book takes on this breadth of complex and contentious issues and distills them down to such convincing and practical solutions. And no other book so vividly compares and contrasts the differing experiences of U.S. and Canadian cities.

Of particular new importance is how city form affects the production of planet-warming greenhouse gases. The author explains this rela-tionship in an accessible way, and goes on to show how conforming to seven simple rules for community design could literally do a world of good. Each chapter in the book explains one rule in depth, adding a wealth of research to support each claim. If widely used, Condon argues, these rules would lead to a much more livable world for future generations—a world that is not unlike the better parts of our own.

Patrick M. Condon, a professor at the University of British Columbia, holds the UBC

James Taylor Chair in Landscape and Liveable Environments, and is Senior Researcher

Urban Green explores new and innovative ways for “built out” cities to add much-needed parkland. After fi rst exploring the question of why urban parks are needed, Peter Harnik looks at how much parkland is truly possible and where specifi c investment can go.

Among the book’s many examples and practical solutions are reusing the land from defunct factories to sharing schoolyards, from decking parks over highways to allowing more activities in cemeteries, from eliminating parking lots to uncovering buried streams, and more. While no strategy alone is perfect, and each has its own set of chal-lenges, collectively they suggest a path toward making cities more beautiful, sociable, fun, ecologically sound, and successful.

The Sprawl Repair Manual

The Sprawl Repair Manual demonstrates a step-by-step design process for the re-balancing and re-urbanization of suburbia into more sustain-able, economical, energy- and resource-effi cient patterns. As Galina Tachieva asserts in this exceptionally useful book, sprawl repair will require a proactive and aggressive approach, focused on design, regula-tion, and incentives.

The Sprawl Repair Manual draws on more than two decades of practi-cal experience in the fi eld of repairing and building communities to analyze the current pattern of sprawl development, disassemble it into its elemental components, and present a process for transforming them into human-scale, sustainable elements. The techniques are illustrated both two- and three-dimensionally, providing users with clear meth-odologies for the sprawl repair interventions, some of which are radical, but all of which will produce positive results.

Climate Savvy

Lara J. Hansen and Jennifer R. Hoffman

Climate change experts Lara Hansen and Jennifer Hoffman consider the implications of climate change for key resource management issues of our time—invasive species, corridors and connectivity, ecological restoration, pollution, and many others. How will strate-gies need to change to facilitate adaptation to a new climate regime? What steps can we take to promote resilience?

Climate Savvy offers a wide-ranging exploration of how scientists, managers, and policymakers can use the challenge of climate change as an opportunity to build a more holistic and effective philosophy. Based on collaboration with a wide range of scientists, conservation leaders, and practitioners, the authors present general ideas as well as practical steps and strategies that can help cope with this new reality.

Lara J. Hansen is executive director of EcoAdapt, a nonprofit organization

Adapting Conservation and Resource Management

to a Changing World

Beyond NaturalnessRethinking Park and Wilderness Stewardship in an Era

of Rapid Change

The central concept guiding the management of parks and wilderness has been “naturalness”—to a large extent the explicit purpose in es-tablishing these special areas was to keep them in their “natural” state. But what does that mean, particularly as the effects of stressors such as habitat fragmentation, altered disturbance regimes, invasive species, and climate change increase?

Beyond Naturalness brings together leading scientists and policymak-ers to explore the concept of naturalness, its varied meanings, and the extent to which it provides adequate guidance regarding where, when, and how managers should intervene in ecosystem processes to protect park and wilderness values. The book offers excellent writing and focus on some of the diffi cult questions being raised in light of new and changing stressors such as global environmental climate change.

Trophic CascadesPredators, Prey, and the Changing Dynamics of Nature

Edited by John Terborgh and James A. Estes

John Terborgh is a research professor at Duke University. He has directed a

biological station in the Peruvian Amazon for thirty-six years and has conducted

research on both plants and animals, emphasizing interactions between them.

After spending most of his career as a research scientist with the U.S. Geological

Survey, James A. Estes is currently a faculty member at the University of California

at Santa Cruz where he is a professor of ecology and evolutionary biology.

Trophic cascades—the top-down regulation of ecosystems by preda-tors—are an essential aspect of ecosystem function and well-being. Trophic cascades are often drastically disrupted by human interven-tions—for example, when wolves and cougars are removed, allowing deer and beaver to become destructive—yet have only recently begun to be considered in the development of conservation and manage-ment strategies.

Trophic Cascades is the fi rst comprehensive presentation of the sci-ence on this subject. It brings together some of the world’s leading scientists and researchers to explain the importance of large animals in regulating ecosystems, and to relate that scientifi c knowledge to practical conservation. It is a groundbreaking work for scientists and managers involved with biodiversity conservation and protection.

Restoring Ecological Health

to Your Land

This is the fi rst practical guidebook to give restorationists and would-be restorationists with little or no scientifi c training or background the “how to” information and knowledge they need to plan and imple-ment ecological restoration activities.

The fi rst part of the book introduces the process of ecological restora-tion in simple, easily understood language through specifi c examples drawn from the authors’ experience in restoring their own lands. The second half shows how that same “thinking” and “doing” can be applied to North America’s major ecosystems and landscapes in any condition or scale.

Safe Passages

Edited by Jon P. Beckmann, Anthony P. Clevenger,

Marcel P. Huijser, and Jodi A. Hilty

Safe Passages brings together the latest information on the emerging science of road ecology as it relates to mitigating interactions between roads and wildlife. This practical handbook of tools and examples is designed to assist individuals and organizations to reduce road-wildlife impacts.

Detailed case studies span a range of scales, from site-specifi c wildlife crossing structures, to statewide planning for habitat connectivity, to national legislation. Contributors explore the cooperative efforts that are emerging as a result of diverse organizations—including transportation agencies, land and wildlife management agencies, and nongovernmen-tal organizations—fi nding common ground to tackle important road ecology issues and problems.

First developed in the 1880s, repeat photography remains an important and cost-effective technique for scientists working to track and study landscape change. This volume explores the technical and geographic scope of this important technique.

Repeat Photography demonstrates the wide range of potential applica-tions, examines new techniques for acquiring data from repeat photog-raphy, and clearly shows that repeat photography remains a valuable, and cost-effective means of monitoring change in both developed and developing regions. More than one hundred sets of photographs serve as examples.

Recent concerns about climate change and its effects on natural land-scapes, combined with ongoing concerns about land-use practices, make this state-of-the-art review a timely contribution to the literature.

Dryland OpportunitiesMichael Mortimore

Drylands cover 41 percent of the earth’s terrestrial surface. The urgency of and international response to climate change have given a new place to drylands in terms of both their vulnerability to predicted climate change impacts and their potential contribu-tion to climate change mitigation. This book aims to apply the new scientifi c insights on complex dryland systems to practical options for development. A new dryland paradigm is built on the resources and capacities of dryland peoples, on new and emergent economic opportunities, on inward investment, and on the best support that dryland science can offer.

Environmental Law InstituteBooks from the Environmental Law Institute

TSCA Deskbook

Air Pollution Control Law

Arnold W. Reitze, Jr.

The most comprehensive, up-to-date guide to and analysis of the Clean Air Act (CAA) is now available from the Environmental Law Institute. Authored by George Washington University Law School Prof. Arnold W. Reitze, Jr., one of the most noted authorities on the Act, this second edition of Air Pollution Control Law explains the legislative provisions, regulatory requirements, and court decisions that constitute the body of air pollution control law.

In 20 detailed chapters, with more than twenty thousand useful refer-ences, Professor Reitze provides a thorough, understandable guide to the legal, technical, scientifi c, and policy issues surrounding the CAA. No other book so thoroughly summarizes in one volume the complex yet vitally important maze of statutory provisions, regulations, and permitting requirements that characterize CAA implementation. The book includes completely up-to-date discussions of current controver-sial issues such as greenhouse gas controls, utility emission regulation, the “grandfathering” of existing facilities, and mobile source emissions. The book is designed and organized both to facilitate an understanding of the Act and its requirements and to provide guidance on methods of compliance and enforcement.

The TSCA Deskbook is an essential resource for attorneys and environ-mental managers working in the complex area of chemical regulation that highlights potential pitfalls and demystifi es complex regulatory language. The TSCA Deskbook begins with a detailed analysis by lead-ing attorney practitioners of the Toxic Substances Control Act. This step-by-step analysis of the statute integrates statutory and regulatory provisions, Federal Register preambles, and agency memoranda and guidance to provide the clearest, most comprehensive guide available to the regulatory programs governing chemicals. Part two of the Deskbookprovides the TSCA in full, up-to-date text. And part three contains valu-able agency memoranda, guidance, and materials to aid the user in the interpretation of the statute. The Deskbook is your one-stop resource for understanding and managing chemical regulation issues.

Changing Contexts in Urban

Regeneration30 Years of Modernisation in Rotterdam

Paul Stouten

Urban renewal plans need to respond to new conditions and require-ments, caused by changes in the population and in social structure.

Changing Contexts in Urban Regeneration presents a comprehensive overview of relevant theory, including the socio-spatial characteristics of neighborhoods and cities; the place of individuals and households in the economic system; and the design form of the housing stock in relation to its usability, valuation, and adaptability.

Next, it evaluates the urban renewal plans that the city of Rotterdam launched in the seventies, drawing international attention at the time, leading to changes in the structures of housing provision, as well as the economic and social context.

This book connects academic debate with professional practice and makes its case by evaluating a major urban renewal plan that has been tested for more than thirty years. It shows that urban renewal should take an integrated approach to the physical, environmental, social, and economic programs, based on fundamental solutions that stand the test of time.

The Europeanisation of CitiesPolicies, Urban Change, and Urban Networks

Edited by Alexander Hamedinger and Alexander Wolffhardt

The Europeanisation of Cities sheds light on the complex interplay between cities and the European Union, both how cities engage with the EU and how the EU engages with cities. In particular, the book considers how EU policies and programs are acting as a driving force for urban change, and what motivates cities to be present on the EU stage. Furthermore, it addresses the role of cities in the process of European integration, for example, social policy.

The book explores different approaches to understand the Europeaniza-tion of cities and gives empirical evidence for changes on the local level related to the process of European integration and to the extension of networks between European cities.

In theoretical terms, Europeanization of cities seems to be a promising approach, but one that still has to be consolidated. This book helps to delineate a distinct research fi eld that brings together different disciplines and aspects.

Alexander Hamedinger is vice-director of the Centre of Sociology in the Department of

Spatial Development, Infrastructure and Environmental Planning, at Vienna University

of Technology. Alexander Wolffhardt is researcher and consultant at the Europaforum

Wien, Centre for Urban Dialogue and European Policy, Vienna, Austria.
