The Sockeye Reintroduction Program will be entering it’s 7th year and as a part of the program the Nation will start construction of the new fish hatchery in Penticton beside the En’owkin Centre. ONA has made an agreement with Choices Market in Kelowna that will allow them to have a taste test demonstration that will allow us to sell the candied salmon with proceeds going back to the program to help with the construction of the fish hatchery.

As we move forward into a new year, the ONA would like to welcome Ramona Wilson – the new Early Childhood Development Coordinator to our staff and wish her success in her new position. ONA is also looking forward to hosting this year’s Junior All Native Basketball Tournament from March 20th to 25th and our 3rd Annual Spirit of Syilx Unity Run May 4th to 8th. The Unity Run will begin in Merritt and end in Christina Lake, as a show of unity, the Colville Tribes youth will be participating.

The Junior All Native Basketball Tournament is fast approaching. The tournament will take place during spring break from March 20 – 25, 2011 with 50 boys and girls teams from throughout the province participating.

We are seeking volunteers for first aide, information booths, and opening ceremonies as well sponsors for Awards. There is also vendor space available, the appropriate forms and applications will be located on the website. www.jant2011.ca

We look forward to you coming out to welcome the visiting Nations on March 20, 2011 during opening ceremonies as well as supporting the youth in this week long tournament.

SUICIDE AND VIOLENCE AWARENES

The 3rd Annual Syilx Unity Run will be held on May 5th

to 8th, 2011 and will cover 389 Kilometers. The Run will start in Douglas Lake (Spaxomin) and end at Christina Lake.

The runners will start in Merritt and go through Princeton; Hedley, Keremeos, Osoyoos Rock Creek, Midway, Green Wood, Grandforks and end at Christina Lake. The run will be completed in relay style as the previous years.

The Syilx Unity Run started in 2009 and is now an annual

event, which brings youth and community members together. This four day run will increase the awareness of suicide and violence that is prominent within aboriginal communities.

We are hoping to see all the previous runners along with new runners come out to run in unity!

HEALTH FORUM‐Coming in May 2011

The Health Department is in the process of developing a Nationwide Health Forum directed towards community members. This forum is expected to be held in May. The forum is directed towards increasing the awareness of community members of the work and programs that are offered within the community. It will also allow for feedback to be heard from community members, allowing for the department to become more effective within their programs and department.

INDIAN WRAPAROUND TRAINING‐February 14‐17, 2011

The Ways of the People are Who We Are

Developed and delivered by the Native American Training Institute; the wraparound concept is both old and new in Indian Country. While the wraparound process is a new way of professionals to work with children and families in crisis, the practice of calling on one’s relatives and the community for support has been in Indian communities for hundred of years. This training module is an adaptation of a national training incorporating Aboriginal perspective and best practices. This training will provide you with the tools and knowledge of providing strength based process in supporting a child in crisis while working with their natural and professional supports. A positive and culturally strength based approach that can be used by any family, community support and professional members.

Pathways to Mainstream Health Care Curriculum

The Project Vision is to improve the health of Syilx by increasing and supporting their capacity to self‐advocate and navigate health care programs and services, while maintaining Syilx identity and traditional beliefs and practices related to health and wellness.

There will be a two day Nation training held February 10 & 11, 2011 for two Health/Social staff and two community members from each member band. Prospective participants would be those who work with and who support families and Elders.

Okanagan Nation Health

In 2007 the ONA CEC supported the need to develop a Health Plan for the Nation. The ONA Wellness Committee (comprised of Health Directors from each member band) and ONA Health personnel worked together since the receival of funding in 2008 from Health Canada – Aboriginal Transitional Health Fund to develop the Syilx Nation Health Plan. On October 20, 2010 the ONA CEC ratified the plan and directed the ONA Health personnel to present the plan to each of the seven member bands Chief and Council. To date five of the seven member band Chief and Council presentations have been completed with the remaining two to be completed early in 2011.

The plan is based on Syilx values in the chaptikwl“How Food Was Given.“ This framework is being used by health and child & family services to support integration and to embed culture in the documents, services and philosophy.

The next step in the Health Planning process will be to determine Nation Health Priority areas and develop a number of specific strategies to address the health needs with the ONAWellness Committee – Health.

HEALTH PLAN ACCESS Each member band health department has two copies of the Syilx Health Plan; one for office purposes and one for community members to view. Therefore if you would like to see a copy of the new health plan, please visit your local health department. Once the new Okanagan Nation Alliance website has been launched the health plan will be posted.

Selkirk College Gathering Space

In the summer of 2010, the Selkirk College of the Rockies invited Okanagan representatives to attend the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the aboriginal gathering place. The construction is expected to be complete in the spring of 2011. The aboriginal gathering place represents an area where aboriginal students can gather and study with one another. The photos provided demonstrate the progress that has been made. The photo on the bottom is the progress and was taken in December 2010.

Hidden histories is a truly alternative exhibition in which six Okanagan artists will leave the gallery behind and consider the ways of disrupting the dominant historical canon by acknowledging and bringing into representation those stories, histories and meaning that have been displaced and ignored by mainstream representations. Translations, the artists will create art as a series of public intervention style event with temporal monuments, performance art, spoken word and video projections happening throughout the Okanagan Valley.

The goal is to represent an alternative, ‘other’ history, pays close attention to our location and the context in which we are situated—acknowledging indigenous Syilx experience and/or re‐inserting the identity of every‐day subjects into the narrative of the valley. The Alternator centre will serve as a reference point for these interventions‐with an exhibition of maps, artist statements, video, drawing and other documentation.

News from the foster parent program

Hello, my name is Michael Auger; I am the Aboriginal Caregiver Coordinator. My background consists of youth work and employment counseling. I recently moved to Penticton from Kamloops. I have met some of Caregivers at National Aboriginal Day. I am looking forward to providing support to the Caregivers.

I am honored to be a part of a community that will enable our team to work together for our future leaders in our children and to share some of our teachings and culture. I recently participated in the Peachfest parade with the MCFD, it was wonderful, there were many people that saw our banner.

OOKNAKANE FRIENDSHIP CENTRE

To be available to provide information sessions to individuals and families that maybe interested in caring for a child or children. To provide cultural support to caregivers when requested from Aboriginal Services

I meet with Leon Louis who is a cultural worker and teacher and he is also available to meet with families that may have questions, or would like to have a

family sharing circle. We provide a monthly calendar to all care givers so that opportunities are made available for cultural teachings and activities for both care givers and the children.

The Ooknakane Friendship Centre and the Aboriginal Services Team also take turns holding a monthly

potluck for our caregivers at the En’owkin Centre. I look forward to our next family dinner in September and home visits that come up.
