TWENTY THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 6TH,2020
I’m sure you remember the public service announcement that used to beon TV, “Friends don’t let friends drive drunk.” Of course, it meant that wehave a personal responsibility for our friends, if we really are their friends.This may go against the grain of people who don’t want to get involved inthe lives of others. As Christians, we have a responsibility towards others.We call this fraternal correction. This theme permeates all our readingstoday. In Ezekiel, the prophet is to be the watchman to warn ofdanger: “Thus says the LORD: You, son of man, I have appointed watchmanfor the house of Israel; when you hear me say anything, you shall warnthem for me.” Ezekiel has a lot on his shoulders to speak the words of God.We have a moral duty to speak the truth about right and wrong, whether toour society or individuals. There are so many ready to record wrongdoingon their phones and post it, but little to intervene. Perhaps the recentprotests that are peaceful and that go unreported are now speaking out forthose who can’t or simply won’t. St.Paul also says to us “Brothers andsisters: Owe nothing to anyone, except to love one another;for the one wholoves another has fulfilled the law.” Perhaps it comes down to this, to loveanother enough to say or do something.
