School of Grace:
Reading: Titus 2:11-14; Isaiah 9:2-7; Luke 2:1-14
Christmas comes. News disappears. We stop attacking each other over politics, economics and other socialissues. We forget our work. We focus on family. We think about the needy, the poor. We pray. We sing. Wemake the effort to go to Church for this event. We even talk about peace.
But that is the problem of Christmas. Talk.
We talk about peace, yet the rest of the year we are justifying the wars we keep fighting. We talk about giving, yet the rest of the year only give when we absolutely have to. Otherwise we give only ifsomeone earns it.We talk about the needy, yet the rest of the year ignore each other’s needs. We keep saying that the others needto improve their lot first. That others will help them.We talk about the poor, yet we wouldn’t offer them rooms at our ‘inns’. We wouldn’t give them money. Wewouldn’t give them food.We talk about family, yet we don’t talk or see them for the rest of the year. We spend so much time at work, somuch time doing ‘Church’ and ‘good’ things.
But then the question arises what if we did all that?
Would we then be able to forget work for the whole year?
Would we stop our attacks, and become more graceful to each other?
Would we stop attacking each other and get personally involved in each persons issues? Without judgment?
Would that change the news we hear each night? Could that change the editorials in the morning papers?Would talk back radio shows share good stories rather than sit on the hosts high horse?
We talk of Christmas being a happy time. When are we going to start making the rest of the year a happy time?
When are we going to stop taking Christmas for granted, when the event it celebrates was anything but certainfor humanity. It surely wasn’t a certainty for Mary and Joseph. For 3/4 of a year there was no peace. There waslittle joy. Few people gave them anything. It even seems their own family cast them out. And yet we celebratethe miracle of ‘God with us’.
But it was also no certainty for God Himself. The first humans had rejected him. Why should the current lot beany different? His people had rejected Him time after time. Even today we all reject Him time after time.
Yes the miracle of Christmas is ‘God with us’. But it so much more than that. It is His peace amidst all our vio-lence. It is His family when we have none. It is His mercy that was His work. It is His Church that He comeslonging for, searching for, hour by hour. His issues were only ever of unconditional love. His issues were forthe needy, for the poor, but the needy and poor who were failures, who were cast out, who were nobodies.
His news, and it was Good News, wasn’t that God had come. It was that God had come for us. God had cometo love us in our hatred. God had come even when we were unaware. God had come when we didn’t deserveHim.
God comes.

For to us a child is born a son is given
I’m just a carpenter & me a virgin girlLiving in Nazareth family & neighbours knowNo where to hide our shame no way to understandWe can’t explain God’s will or why He’s doing this
I cannot leave her now He can’t divorce me nowI can’t protect my wife sorrow replaced my joyGod with us in our life what we have waited forNo one is happy I’ll run away to hide
Will he exceed my life? Will people love my son?Can he succeed in life? What will become of him? Will he fulfil God’s will? Will he remember us?What if I fail as dad? Would he reject his mum?
Born in a smelly barn born far away from homeMagi come visiting shepherds have no ideaThe threat of death around fear is around this landAngels appear in dreams to leave our home behind
For all the people there is good newsFor every sinner there’s forgivenessFor all the nations mercy and graceFor all the people there is great joy
Cantata 5 ©2010 Nigel Bruce www.nigelbruce.net 16
Salvation has appeared to allTo rescue us from the hands of our enemiesThe humble He has lifted upA light for revelation to the Gentiles
The righteousness of God revealedHis mercy given freely covering all sinThe glory of God presentedAnd every eye will hear every ear will hear
Glory to God in the highestOn earth peace to me on whom His favour rests
He knows all our fears He feels our sorrowsThe depths of our pain He wipes all our tearsHe sees the anger the daily strugglesUnanswered questions in our loneliness
God is one of us every way a manEvery way my God we crucified HimWe put Him to deathUnaware that God was one of us
From Heaven You came rejected despisedTo take our troubles to bear all our sinAll our suffering to die my own deathSo that I might live it’s hard to believe
