Fr. Steve’s Prayer for Consideration:
“Almighty ever-living God, who governs all things, both in heaven and on earth, mercifully hear the
pleading of your people and bestow your peace on our times. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns...” -Collect from the 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time
This Sunday, after having celebrated the beautiful seasons of Advent and Christmas, the Church now returns to the season of Ordinary Time. We will be in Ordinary Time for several weeks until the beginning of the season of Lent on Ash Wednesday, February 14th, 2018. For our convenience, as we begin a new calendar year, I have included below a listing of the moveable feasts for this upcoming year, as well as the dates of holy days of obligation that do not otherwise fall on a Sunday
(every Sunday is of course a holy day of obligation for us). This collect for Sunday’s Mass above is particularly pertinent to our troubled times. Let’s examine it in its parts. First, we acknowledge that God governs all things in the entire order of existence. That is, God governs all things “both in heaven and on earth.” God’s will guides and directs all of creation- both the angelic world in heaven, and the created world in our universe. We call this divine governance God’s “providence.” God is infinitely provident in everything that He does. All things that God wills work together to bring about what is best for us. God’s ultimate desire is that we all reach the perfection for which we were created- that we get to Heaven and there be united completely and totally with God for all eternity. And God gives to each and every person all of the graces and helps necessary to get to Heaven. He truly guides creation- not in an arbitrary or forceful way, but gently and wisely, bringing about the circumstances and situations neces-sary for us to have the best opportunity to follow Him closely and grow in holiness. The Catechism of the Catholic Church puts it this way: “The witness of Scripture is unanimous that the solicitude of divine providence is concrete and immediate; God cares for all, from the least things to the great events of the world and its history. The sacred books powerfully affirm God's absolute sovereignty over the course of events: "Our God is in the heavens; he does whatever he pleases." As the book of Proverbs states: "Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the LORD that will be established."” The difficulty is that when we look at the world and look at our lives, it doesn’t always appear to us that God is in control, that God is at work guiding the world. In fact, sometimes it looks like the exact opposite: it can look like evil and sin are winning. We look around and see death, destruction, violence, greed, immorality, unbelief, and suffering. How can we believe in God’s providence when there is so much evil and suffering in the world? The answer is faith. Pure and simple. We are called to trust and to believe that even though it may often appear as though the world is spinning out of control and that God is absent, the reality is much different. God is here, God is present, God is in control. God’s ways are not our ways. God knows perfectly how to bring good out of even the most atrocious evil. God knows exactly what are the best conditions for us to respond in faith to Him. And God also must respect each human person’s free will, which includes the freedom to commit sin and carry out evil. Sometimes, we can forget that much of the suffering in this world has nothing at all to do with God and everything to do with humanity’s rejection of God and making choices that are evil and selfish. And yet, as I said, God can work with that: He can bring good from anything, even the most hideous evil that man is capable of. And further, He invites us to be part of His providential plan; He invites us to participate in carrying out His will! When we are obedient to Him and His teachings, when we strive to live a life of virtue and holiness, we help to carry out His designs. And, one of the best ways that we do this is through prayer. And so, as we pray in the second half of the collect, we ask God to “bestow peace on our times.” And surely we need peace in our times! Let us pray with renewed strength that God’s peace and love may calm the tensions among nations, that the paths to war might be blocked by prayers for peace, and that our day may see renewed peace and harmony. God bless you! ~ Fr. Steve

inside the basket. As a faith community we are encouraged to
pray for the people whose names have been placed in the
Coming Home Basket as well as to encourage those who have
drifted away to return.
Latin America:
In two weeks, we will take up the Collection for the Church in

terrain and a lack of ministers are obstacles to practicing their
faith. Your support to the collection provides lay leadership
training, catechesis, priestly and religious formation as well as
other programs to help share our faith with those who long to
hear the Good News of Christ. To learn more, please visit
