The Gospel for All Ages…Family Catechesis
The risen Jesus calls us to new life!
About the Gospel
In Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus’ friends are fishing when
someone calls out to them and tells them to lower their
nets again. They catch many fish! This helps the
disciples recognize that Jesus is the one calling to them.
Jesus makes them breakfast and eats with them.

Questions of the Week
How do you recognize Jesus in other people? In the
Mass? In some other way?
Who do you know whose works live on after their
death?
How are you part of the Christian community?
Family Prayer
Help us to recognize the physical and emotional needs of
others and to “feed” them when they need nourishment and
encouragement.

In Church
Jesus fed his friends breakfast. During Mass, pay attention
to how Jesus feeds us through the Word of God and
Holy Communion.

Discipleship Habits for Families
1. Imitate Jesus even in the littlest of ways
You have heard the phrase “What would Jesus do?” Discipleship is
really about asking ourselves, “How do I follow Jesus?” Jesus is our
model. We can ask ourselves with every decision we make throughout
the day, “Am I following in the footsteps of Jesus?” When your child is
making a decision, instruct them to stop and imagine what Jesus might
do in that situation.
2. Pray together
Many times it’s hard for busy families to “find time” to pray together.
Usually we have to “make time.” Think of times you are already
togetherlike in the car, at dinner, before or after homework time.
If you are unsure of how to start, it’s okay to start simple with an
Our Father or Hail Mary, and then have each member of the family
thank God for one blessing. ...continued

CELEBRATING CHILDREN
AT ST. KIERAN

TO THE PARENTS OF OUR YOUNG
CHILDREN, MAY WE SUGGEST. . .

 Relax! God put the wiggle in children;
don’t feel you have to suppress it in God’s
house.
Sit toward the front where it is easier for
your little ones to see and hear.
Quietly explain the parts of the Mass.
Sing hymns, pray, and voice the
responses. Children learn liturgical
behavior by copying you.
If you have to leave Mass with your child,
please feel free to do so, but please come
back.
Remember that the way we welcome
children in church directly affects the way
they respond to Church, to God, and to
Jesus. Let them know that they are at
home in this liturgical gathering.

TO THE MEMBERS OF THIS PARISH
A smile of encouragement is always welcome
to the parents with small, active children!

leaders be blessed with wisdom, counsel, and prudent discernmentin
creating just laws for our land.

Today’s Gospel from St. John is
packed with meaning beyond just
the words. We learn of the
tremendous catch 153 fish but
the nets were not tearing. We hear
Jesus, who having prepared
breakfast for the hungry fishermen,
breaks the bread and fish passing it
on to them. We’re told this is the
third time He has appeared to his disciples since His resurrection. We could
delve more deeply into these things, but I want to focus on two additional
items that are key for the apostles and for us today.

At the very beginning we find that, even after all the incredible things he has
witnessed and experienced, Peter returns to his old occupation and the
others follow him. Peter’s decision to go fishing has a feeling of resignation
about it; hinting at the depression he and the disciples must have
experienced after the death of Jesus. When they were first called to follow
Him, Jesus promised he would make them “fishers of men,” but now they go
back to just being fishermen again. Like them, we can experience a letdown
after the sacrifices of Lent followed by the jubilance of Easter Sunday.
Perhaps we find ourselves drifting back to our old ways and our previous
habits.

But like Peter and the others in this story, if we are open to it, we too can
experience Jesus calling us anew to sustainable change. Now the second
item I want to reference Jesus’ interaction with Peter. Recall his prediction
that, rather than die for him, Simon Peter would deny three times even
knowing Christ. We know how this feels when, with the best intentions, we
make changes in our life only to fall short, failing to keep our promises and
suffering the disappointment that follows. But like with Peter, Jesus doesn’t
condemn us; he is a God of second chances! He offered Peter the chance to
show, yet again, just how much he loves him and he offers us the same
opportunity. Christ knows what we can handle and he calls us to do only
what we can with the help of his grace. The question is, are we willing to put
aside our failures and confidently follow where he might lead us? If so, we,
like Peter, might find ourselves empowered to “feed God’s sheep!”

Hope to see you Mass!

A community where we are family and we share our many gifts generouslyDear Parish Family,
Between demanding schedules, traveling, and just trying to get out the door on time for Mass, it can be challenging to tithe on a regular basis as God calls us to do. Plus, for many families, the parish is one of the last places where you still have to use a checkbook or cash.
Not anymore.
I am pleased to inform you that you are now able to share your financial gifts to support our parish online with WeShare! We have been working very hard behind the scenes as a parish staff to bring this exciting new program to our parish. Online giving makes donating simple and easy, safe and secure. We believe that by offering online giving, we will be able to engage more of our parish families to join us in supporting the important work we have been called to do together.
It is very simple to set up a one-time or recurring donation, and allocate the amounts of your choice to any of our different collections. Once you start to use it, you will be able to view your complete, accurate financial contribution records at any time during the year. Those of you who wish to continue using traditional methods of offering may do so, however, I am personally asking that you prayerfully consider switching to giving your gifts online. Your choice to give online will help our parish to be better stewards of our Time, Treasure and Talent.
Take the time to read through the next few pages to learn about the benefits of online giving for both you and our parish. If you have any questions about the program or need help setting up your account, please don’t hesitate to call Monica Thimm (586-781-4942 x113). Please prayerfully consider giving to our parish community online as it does benefit our parish in many important ways. I am looking forward to growing our parish community together.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
MSGR. H. THOMAS JOHNSON

hy is it important to be registered in a parish?
Registration is the official way we join a parish community. Many people think that because they attend a
particular parish they automatically belong. At times young adults who have moved away for years think
they are still registered under their parents. But membership requires signing up formally enrolling yourself in a
parish. Registration is a commitment to a community, a way to be included in the religious, social and ministerial
activities of your parish. Your registration affects the parish in many ways. Census numbers can determine how many
priests are assigned to a church, what benefits and obligations the community has to the diocese, and how Masses
and programs are planned and scheduled. Registration shows you belong! It is also necessary for certain benefits, like
scheduling sacraments, obtaining sponsor certificates, and getting donation statements for tax purposes. Most
importantly, it lets the parish count on you, to call on you to assist in its mission. Registering in your parish is a
statement of faith and confidence in the life and work of your parish. 2009 Liturgical Publications Inc.
