14TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 5, 2020

THE VISITATION COLLABORATIVE

From the Pastor

This Thursday is the feast of St. Augustine Zhao Rong and Chinese martyrs. This St. Augustine was martyred in 1815 in Beijing. China has had and still has a complicated religious history with Cathol-icism. These Chinese martyrs we honor on this day span from 1648 to 1930. There are probably more martyrs to add since 1930. As all martyrs do, they died witnessing to the truth and love of Christ. This means that they also died in union with and defending the Church.

Our life in Christ depends upon our being united to Him through His Church. The Latin word from which we translate ‘Church’ is ecclesia. It comes from two Greek words that mean ‘to call out from.’ In the Church, God calls us out from the fallen ways of the world. God calls us out from ha-tred, division, lies, greed, pride, etc... God calls us out of the fruits of original sin and does so by way of His Church.

God does not simply call us out of but calls us into at the same time. He calls us into His way of be-ing: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness....the fruits of His Spir-it.

When we live in union with the Church, we are living through Christ, with Christ, and in Christ. The more we live in union with the Church, the more we are in union with God. To the great degree that the martyrs were united to the Church, so they were also united to Christ. When it came to being persecuted, they witnessed to Christ (the Greek word for martyr means ‘witness.’) and they could not deny Him because “God cannot deny Himself.” (2 Timothy 2:13)

How do we grow in union with the Church, and therefore with God? Prayer: raising our hearts and minds to God. Sacrament of Confession: asking God to take away the impediments to lending unit-ed in love to Him (our sins). Attending Mass: listening to God speak to us through His sacrifice of love and being strengthened by His Real Presence. Nourishing the faith in others: helping them to a deeper participation in and unity with God. Sharing with others the Good News of the saving love of Christ in word and action (this is what evangelization is).

The Chinese martyrs and all the martyrs teach us that to be happy is to be in union with God. To be in union with God means that we are meeting Him as comes to us in His Church.

Thank you, again, to all who continue to support the mission of the Church here in Milton at the Visitation Collaborative with your time and financial donations.

We have begun registration for religious education. Please contact Denise or Will if you have not gotten an email. Also, if you know any families of first graders, please let them know about the be-ginning of the First Communion program (we have a two year preparation) and any families of 9th graders for the beginning of the Confirmation preparation (2 year program).

Please pray for our Confirmation candidates. We finally received a date for their Confirmation (Sept. 18 and Oct. 2) that was supposed to happen in March. Also, please pray for our First Commu-nicants as they are receiving the Eucharist for the first time throughout the summer.

A blessed week to all.In Christ our hope,Fr. Bennett

St. Margaret Mary Alacoque's prayer taken from the book "Devotion To The Sacred Heart" by by Fr. John Croiset, S.J.

O Sacred Heart of Jesus, to Thee I consecrate and offer up my person and my life, my ac-tions, trials, and sufferings, that my entire being may henceforth only be employed in loving, honoring and glorifying Thee. This is my irrevocable will, to belong entirely to Thee, and to do all for Thy love, renouncing with my whole heart all that can displease Thee.

I take Thee, O Sacred Heart, for the sole ob-ject of my love, the protection of my life, the pledge of my salvation, the remedy of my frailty and inconstancy, the reparation for all the defects of my

life, and my secure refuge at the hour of my death. Be Thou, O Most Merciful Heart, my justification before God Thy Father, and screen me from His anger which I have so justly merited. I fear all from my own weak-ness and malice, but placing my entire confi-dence in Thee, O Heart of Love, I hope all from Thine infinite Goodness. Annihilate in me all that can displease or resist Thee. Im-print Thy pure love so deeply in my heart that I may never forget Thee or be separated from Thee.

I beseech Thee, through Thine infinite Good-ness, grant that my name be engraved upon Thy Heart, for in this I place all my happiness and all my glory, to live and to die as one of

Thy devoted servants. Amen.

St. Mary of the Hills Perpetual Candle

Light a candle in memory/honor of someone or for a particular intention. They are a great way of inviting others to pray for your intention and to let others know that they are being prayed for here at St. Mary of the Hills.

Another way to use these candles is to have one lit in honor of a recently deceased family member or friend instead of sending flowers. The parish would send out a card letting the family know that their loved one is being re-membered with our candle here at the church.
