SOCIETY AGM MEETING & DANCE The Square Dancing Society of Queensland Inc. held our AGM Meeting and Dance on Saturday 28

th March 2015. This year the event was host-

ed by Gumdale Grandsliders.

WAVELL WHIRLAWAYS

What a start to the year we have had. Our annual BBQ at Sid and Betty’s in January

was our last at this venue. They have been running for a lot of years and everyone

thoroughly enjoys themselves. A big thank you to Sid and Betty for throwing open

their house to us all. Sid also had a big announcement for all the dancers as well. Af-

ter nearly 46 years at the hall in Wavell we were on the move.

The following weekend saw the Wedding of Sid and Betty’s eldest daughter Cindy to

Shane. Some of us were privileged to attend this event and what a great day it was. It

was a wedding with a difference but suited the couple perfectly. Cindy and Shane are

now happily together in Canada. Congratulations Cindy and Shane.

Wednesday 28th January saw the start of dancing for the club at our new venue. The

morning saw us decorating the hall for Australia Day. Lots of flags and balloons

around the hall, and most dancers in red white and blue. It was a successful night

with four sets dancing most of the night. Big thank you to all who helped with the

decorations especially Chris. A big welcome to our visitors David and Faith Pearce.

Since then we have gone on to celebrate many milestones for our dancers, caller and

club. Viv Collier’s family joined us on the 11th Feb to help celebrate her 80th birthday.

It was also Viv and Blair’s 58th wedding anniversary. We have also had the 60th wed-

ding anniversary of Yvonne and Phil Denaro. In the last few weeks we have managed

to surprise Sid with a birthday party at the Club for his 70th. This was mainly organ-

ised by his wife and daughter with the help of a few dancers. Another successful

night and a big surprise for Sid.

The following week saw us celebrate the clubs 46th birthday. The morning was spent

decorating with some beautiful big masks around the wall and many other decorations

as it was to be a masquerade dance. The masks were many and varied with the even-

tual winners being John and Irene. I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of

the dancers to thank Sid and Betty once again for their devotion to Square Dancing

and the Club called Wavell Whirlaways which is now dancing at Enogerra Bowls

Club.

Hervey Bay Square Dancers. Hi everyone. Our new beginners are doing wonderfully well. It's early days yet but they seem to be overjoyed with what they have learnt so far. We did a demo at our local Scarness Park and some went to watch. That delighted us and showed they are really keen to learn. A "Getting to know you" b/b/q was held at Glenda's property so everyone could socialize. Sausages and rissoles were supplied by the club and salads, drinks and sweets brought along by our members made for a good night. Our game of Boule caused much laughter. Most of us had never played the game be-fore but we have come to the conclusion that, as Boule players, we are really good square dancers. Our A.G.M. was held on 2nd March followed by a Plus dance. All positions are the same except our Secretary and Assistant Secretary have swapped jobs and we have one of our newer ladies in the posi-tion of Assistant Treasurer following the tragic death of Jean Wright. Jean passed away on 15/11/2014 after she lost her battle with cancer. She was a quiet, petite lady loved by all. Club members will never forget 'our Jeanie'. She is sadly missed. Last Saturday six of us went to Maryborough's 26th Birthday Dance with Alan Evans calling. What a great afternoon and night it was! Alan's calling was full of surprises and kept us thinking. Congratulations to Bev Roberts who won their perpetual trophy for the best club member and was given the honour of cutting the Birthday cake with Alan. Hervey Bay are having their 26th Birthday Dance on 2nd May with Andrew Reid calling Plus in the after-noon at 2pm-4.30pm and Mainstream at 7pm. Andrew hasn't been to Hervey Bay for many years so we are looking forward to his calling and us hosting him again. Everyone is welcome to help us celebrate this happy occasion. Uniting Squares Day Square Dance Club

Under the guidance of the experienced teacher and caller, Kay Walker, Uniting Squares

Day Square Dance Club will be accepting beginners at the start of April this year,

Wednesday 1st April until 29th April at 10:45 am. Those learning to Square Dance will

be in the company of others who are also learning. Experienced dancers will be there to

assist. A partner is not necessary.

Uniting Squares Day meets at Graceville every Wednesday morning at 10:00 for danc-

ing and workshopping Mainstream. At 10:45 learning Basic until 11:15 then a cuppa.

After the break Kay alternates learning Basics and Mainstream dancing until the

1:00pm finish when many of the dancers enjoy a picnic lunch in Simpsons Playground.

A pleasant park at the junction of the Brisbane River and Oxley Creek.

CANE COUNTRY SQUARES

March 13th was another “Black Friday” with our theme ‘Black and White All Over”

on the calendar this time. Everyone participated in the theme and dressed according-

ly. Who would have thought Black meant to move “left” and White meant to move

“right”. With so many movements consisting of directions left and right, Matthew

tried to confuse us all. We managed to follow his instructions but it kept us on our

toes and even he did not falter with the directions. This was the first night for our new

learner’s class and they enjoyed all the frivolity. We compiled a history of Square Dancing in Bundaberg for insertion in our local

paper under the heading of “Hindsight” with story and photos which is currently open

to anyone locally to tell their story free of charge. We have used every avenue availa-

ble for promotion, both paid and free covering many magazines, school newsletters,

radio, TV, shopping centre cards etc available in the district.

ULYSSES SQUARES - EDMONTON

The Club celebrated it's 24th birthday last night and it was a huge success

with members from other clubs attending for a wonderful night of square and

round dancing and social interaction. Our six new learners (Dianne, Beryl, Ron,

Helen, Leander & Mick) have picked things up quickly with some of our

experienced members giving their time over the past few weekends to help

with special dance practise.

Cairns City Square Dance Club

Seeing Cyclone ‘Nathan’ passed Cairns by with no impact on our weather Cairns City

Squares was able to have our 42nd Birthday dance on last Friday night. We had a good

member attendance with members also from Ulysses Square Dance Club and visitors.

It was a very good nights dancing with lucky spots and raffle prizes conducted during

the night. The night ended with enjoyable food and fellowship.

Members will be attending Ulysses birthday Dance on Tuesday this week and as

always will have a thoroughly enjoyable night.

The Club has not commenced the Plus night but in the meantime some mainstream

members have started to learn or relearn Plus moves. This can eventually add

numbers to our Plus Nights.

SUNCOASTERS SQUARE DANCE CLUB Suncoasters are now back in full swing for the year and enjoying our

dances now that it isn’t quite as hot as it was earlier. We have had ten

new dancers attending the Beginners’ Classes in March and they ap-

pear to be really enjoying themselves and we do hope that they will

become keen and active members. We are still endeavouring to attract

some more beginners.

We are looking forward to our ‘Chicken Wing Ding Pyjama Party,

Dance and Sleepover’ to be held in our hall on 21 March. We will

start the evening with Chicken Wings and Wine and follow on with a

fun night of dancing.




Kay’s Plus Square Dance Club.

The dancers who started the 2013 Plus course have completed the Callerlab Plus Pro-

gramme. Most of them have indicated that they will join the 2015 class for more expe-

rience and to learn the art of being a Square Dance angel.

Starting on Sunday the 3rd of May 2015 Kay Walker will be offering extensive tuition

in standard and extended Plus and Mainstream.

Prerequisites for new students are:

- have completed the Mainstream programme

- have a genuine interest in learning extended Plus and Mainstream

Most dancers take two years with regular attendance. The more familiar you are with

Mainstream the more enjoyable will be the classes. It is serious fun. Class intakes

close on the 7th June 2015 To avoid embarrassment and disappointment please note

there is no intake after this date.

Kay’s Plus meets at 1:00 pm on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month at the Pamphlett

Sea Scouts in Simpsons Playground at the corner of Nadine St and Graceville Ave.,

Graceville. A pleasant location at the junction of the Brisbane River and Oxley Creek.

STEPPING OUT WITH CLOGGING

Firstly, many thanks to the Clogging clan who teamed up at this year’s STORM KING

Clogging Camp at Luther Heights, Coolum: definitely an A-Plus venue located and organ-

ised by Edith and Jenny, plus Denis doing the filming and recording, with wonderful back-

up work by a host of willing ‘extra-pairs-of-hands.’

Our visitors from all over, including interstate, were wrapped in what they experienced

dance and scenic-wise, with many saying they would love to holiday on the Sunshine Coast,

or stay longer after next year’s Camp.

The Get Rhythm Dance Team enjoyed another visit to one of our ‘Fan Clubs’: Salford Wa-

ters Retirement Village at Victoria Point, Moreton Bay.

These demos. are a great way of spreading the Clogging message as other Groups and Clubs

have found. If you would like some Clogging brochures please let me know.

Another great weekend at the Caboolture Historical Village (next to the Caboolture Show-

grounds) is upon us once again- the URBAN COUNTRY MUSIC FESTIVAL

Saturday the 2nd and Sunday the 3rd May will see Clogging in the Dance Marquee both

morning and afternoon both days. Beginners’ classes will be held at the start of each Clog-

ging session on both Saturday and Sunday. Line Dancing will also have sessions over the

weekend. Admission to the Historical Village and daytime dancing is free. Plenty to see,

lots of stalls, great selection of food stalls during the daytime.

Sunday is Clogging Social Dance night in the Stanmore Hall which is at the opposite end of

the Historical Village to the Dance Marquee. Time: 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. $5 admission.

Parking available on Beerburrum Road near the side entrance to Hall, just 50 metres from

main entrance to grounds.

CHUG-A-LUG’S 28th Birthday celebrations are fast approaching, the date being Saturday

16th May at the School of Arts Hall, Cavendish Road, corner Halstead Street, Coorparoo,

from 9:30 a.m. to 4.00 p.m.

Hope to see you there: former Cloggers having a break from dancing, and friends and visi-

tors are very welcome to join us, even if only for the social atmosphere at what will be an-

other enjoyable, smiley day of Clogging.

“Remind us when Aussie Clog weekend is on” I hear you ask.; it’s the 24th, 25th and 26th

July at Kindilan (Redland Bay) which is a much-loved Clogging experience.
