SAVING PATIENT'S LIVESWITH A SWIFT EVACUATION DEVICE FOR PATIENTS THAT CAN'T EVACUATE ON THEIR OWN

A N I N T R O D U C T I O N

In case of emergencies it is of utmost important thatbedridden patients can be brought to safety in time.An evacuation aid is needed in this situation.

The S-CAPEPOD is developed for the quick and safeevacuation of bedridden and immobile people in anemergency – where speed and ease of deployment iscritical. The S-CAPEPOD is a simple-to-deployevacuation device, stored below the bed mattress, which when required can be simply unfolded andfitted around the person laid on the bed mattress.

The unique design of using folding flap sections ateach side and at the foot-end of the bed to create asturdy cocoon in which to envelop the patient and

mattress, and using heavy-duty hook & loop fixationsystem to hold it all together once deployed, gives avery fast, safe and effective system for the evacuationof a bedridden patient. Hand-hold straps at the headand foot-end allow the mattress and occupant to beeasily manoeuvred along the floor and down stairs.Made of a polyester material, it glides easily duringevacuation, as well as being breathable when storedunder the mattress and easily washable.

The S-CAPEPOD is ideal for Hospitals and CareHomes where in an emergency situation where a highnumber of bed-bound people may need to beevacuated directly from their beds, the system simplysits under the bed mattress and when needed can bedeployed in seconds, keeping the patient secure andcomfortable on the mattress on their way out.

The S-CAPEPOD provides a safe feeling for thepatient and the rescue worker.

'There are comparable products on the market, but the S-CAPEPOD fulfilled all ourrequirements.'

THE LEADING CAUSES OF FIRE IN HEALTHCAREWhile not nearly as 'hot' a topic as,say, swine flu, hospital fires will alsowreak havoc at hospitals across thecountry this year. They'll cause injuries(sometimes fatal) to patients andstaff, result in millions of dollars inproperty damages and thrusthospitals into local or even nationalnews headlines.

While some of the causes are due totheobvious (careless disposal ofsmoking materials and fires related tocooking), other causes may surpriseyou.

The eight common causes of fires athospitals or hospice facilities are:1. Cooking equipment2. Contained trash or rubbish3. Electrical distribution andequipment4. Heating equipment4. Clothes washers and dryers6. Medical equipment7. Electronic, office and entertainmentequipment8. Smoking materials

Under what conditions would evacuation be necessary? Many of us have the mentality that a serious emergency will neverhappen to us, but it can happen everyday. Especially among senior

citizens with disabilit ies or i lnesses.

Most fire deaths are not caused by burns, but by smokeinhalation. In 2006-2010, U.S. fire departments responded to anestimated average of 6,240 structure fires in or on health careproperties per year. Almost half (46%) were at nursing homes, and almost one-quarter (23%) were in hospitals or hospices.

FIRE AND SMOKE

Most power outrages will be over as soon as they begin, butsome might last longer, up to days or even weeks. During a power

failure, residents could be facing major challenges because theymay be left without heating/air conditioning, lighting, hot water,

or even running water. Power failures can also be the result ofhurricanes or other natural disasters.

A gas leak can cause explosions or a fire, because it is flammable. The awful odor warns residents of danger. Most emergencyprocedures for natural gas emergencies are similar to that for fireemergencies. Also in this case, swift evacuation of residents incare facilities is required.

Features & Benefits

FAST AND SIMPLE SOLUTION DOES NOT OBSTRUCT STAIRCASES

ONE PERSON OPERATION A MULTIFUNCTIONAL CLOTH

In the event of an emergency, elevatorsshould not be used in multi-story buildings, therefore bedridden residents may becometrapped. The S-CAPEPOD is an easy-to-usedevice which glides easily and quickly down

stairways.

The S-CAPEPOD is suitable for horizontal andvertical evacuation. With adequate staff

training, an able-bodied person can descendstairs at normal or quick pace without blocking

the stairs for other users. When there isenough space, the care worker or fire fighter

can even use the S-CAPEPOD as a sled toincrease the evacuation speed.

One person operation can increase evacuationspeed. Always use a second rescue worker if

you have any doubt about being able to movea resident or patient down the stairs with the

long strap at the head of the S-CAPEPOD.

The material is washable, permeable (urine),breathable, slippery AND most importantly

anti-bacterial. It also does not cause pressurepoints (decubitus) under the mattress. The

towing straps are stored in a envelope typepocket to prevent that the strap will become

trapped between the frame of a high-low bed.
