I am really excited to announceMusic at Oxford’s new season, with music ranging from theRenaissance right up to the UKpremiere of a work dating from 2016.Spanning a variety of Oxford venues- both old and new - this seasonincludes two mini-series as well as atrio of ensembles from Nordiccountries, each making their Oxforddebut with Music at Oxford.
We launch our new season withaward-winning KOTTOS fromDenmark, whose dynamicperformances are an absolutemust-see (and must-hear!). InFebruary we welcome the‘extraordinary’ Engegård Quartetfrom Norway, and we complete our trio of Nordic firsts with theremarkably talented Danish NationalVocal Ensemble, covering fivecenturies of Danish music includinga UK premiere by the greatly missedand internationally revered PelleGudmensen-Holmgreen, composedshortly before his death. Thisconcert is being recorded for futurebroadcast on BBC Radio 3 in Concertand will be available on BBC Soundsfor 30 days after the broadcast.
We celebrate Beethoven 2020 (the250th anniversary of Beethoven’sbirth) with his sublime music forpiano trio performed by the PhoenixPiano Trio, and last but not least, webring the OAE’s Bach, the Universeand Everything project to thestimulating space of theMathematical Institute.
Two further anniversaries are markedin November: the 500th anniversary of the death of Leonardo, when I Fagiolini and Professor Martin Kempoffer reflections of his images in awide array of vocal music, and thecentenary of the Weimar Republic, when Sarah Gabriel and IainFarrington use music, readings andimages to take us back to theextraordinarily creative worlds of theBerlin cabaret, and of the composerRichard Strauss.
Finally, Finnish orchestral music(RPO) and American music from the20th century (George Barton andSiwan Rhys) contrasts with vibrantperformances of earlier music (LaSerenissima; English Cornett andSackbut Ensemble). As ever, Musicat Oxford is committed to offeringthe very best performancesencompassing the entirety of thecanon.
We are hugely grateful to all those ofyou who donate so generously to ourcharity; this support enables us tokeep our pricing structures keen andto continue to offer those crucialdiscounts to under 18s, students, and people with limited mobility orlimited means.
All of you understand the power oflive performance, so if you are ableto become a Friend, Patron orBenefactor of Music at Oxford, please do, because every donationreally does count. Similarly, if youare already one of our generousdonors but able to give a little more, you can find full details of ourschemes on p10.

“When we see images of the strange mathematical beastslurking at the heart of the natural world - fractal landscapes, the Fibonacci series, the strange attractors that beat at theheart of chaos - it is always the dizzying spirals of Bach thatcome to mind” Douglas Adams
Fresh from two successful seasons in London, Bach, theUniverse and Everything visits Oxford for three dates inpartnership with the University of Oxford’s MathematicalInstitute. Bach was known for being a ‘mathematicalcomposer’, with intricate structures and symmetries inhis music reflecting deep truths about the universe.
To explore this, each concert mixes some of Bach’sgreatest music and a ground-breaking talk by a leadingfigure from the world of mathematics. With a bit ofcommunal singing and conversation, it’s a place whereyou can bond with music lovers and unravel themysteries of our universe.

The title ‘Shaping the Invisible’ - Leonardo’s phrase - is anew commission by Adrian Williams and poet Gillian Clarke for eight voices, celebratingLeonardo’s scientific investigation and obsession with flight.

Formed under the midnight sun in 2006, the Engegård Quartet has rapidly become oneof Norway’s most sought-after ensembles. Their bold, fresh interpretations of theclassical repertoire combined with a deep attachment to their Scandinavian roots hasattracted international acclaim; the quartet’s debut CD was praised as ‘breath-taking’in The Strad.
For their first ever performance in Oxford, they combine Mozart’s much-loved quartetin D minor with works by Grieg and Sibelius. Anyone familiar with orchestral works bythese two composers will quickly find idiomatic motifs in these quartets – they aresymphonic structures in their own right.

Denmark is one of the great singing nations of the world, and its choral music –from short hyggelig pieces to be sung in company, through the grand liturgicalrepertoire developed after the Reformation in the Danish Lutheran church, tothe national choral songs and concert music of our own day – is one of thenation’s great cultural treasures, if less well-known than it should be outsideDenmark itself. BizArriuMENgLishcOrNETT & sAcKBuTENsEMBLEProgramme includes music by Gabrieli, Tye, Byrd and Ferrabosco II
We start the month of May with a vibrant, loud and exciting exploration of a ‘cabinet of curiosities’. Duringthe 16th and 17th centuries, there was a trend for European composers to write quirky pieces with the solepurpose of baffling and delighting both their audiences and their musicians.
Byrd’s The Bells is a splendid and virtuosic evocation of the change ringing of church bells, while Gabrieli’ssprightly and often unheard Canzona VII a7 whisks you into a sense of 'past meets future' with its liltingmelody and unexpected magnificent rhythmic structure. A trait of 17th century mastery synonymous withVenice and St Marco.
Performed on an array of sackbuts, cornetts, dulcian, keyboards and even the violin, the eight expertmusicians of the renowned ECSE return to Music at Oxford to guide us through their carefully curated‘musical miscellany of the strange and beautiful’.

The Phoenix Piano Trio is praised for its performances with‘musical narrative of tremendous, involving depth’. InBeethoven’s 250th anniversary year, they explore thecomposer’s genre-defining masterpieces. This three-concertseries begins with the first works to which, in 1795, Beethovenallocated an opus number: a major statement for the youngcomposer in Vienna, and a clear musical break with hiserstwhile teacher, Haydn. In the middle concert, we hear thetwo highly contrasting trios of op. 70. Published in 1809, thefirst of these is the Ghost trio, with its famous slow movementthat may owe something to the Witches Scene in Beethoven’sunrealised sketches for an opera of Macbeth. The seriesconcludes with the sublime Archduke Trio of 1811.
