MEMORIAL OF THE UNBORN

In 1997, Brother Knights of Columbus Richard C. Madden Council #6629 decided to erect a monument to honor the unborn and place it next to the council hall to be seen by all who passed by. Br. Ray Ragano and Br. Joe Bran-ton managed the project. Knights held yard sales to raise the $600 needed to pur-

chase and engrave a granite stone. Bishop Thompson presided over the dedication cere-mony on October 12, 1997, with Mrs. Paula Belken serving as cantor. When the council hall was sold, the monument was moved to storage. After discussions with Fr. Ray and Seminarian Chris Loester, it was decided to place the monument on church grounds. Council #6629 and Assembly #1900 donated funds and the monument was placed and secured outside of St. John’s, adjacent to the front door. We will dedicate the monument on the first Sunday of October, which is Respect Life Sunday throughout the Catholic Church.

ARE YOU SOMEONE OR DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO… ● Has expressed an interest in the Catholic faith and possibly becoming Catholic? ● Has a child over the age of seven who has not been baptized? ● Was baptized Catholic as a child, but has not celebrated the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist? ● Have a spouse that sits beside you in church, but is not Catholic and he/she has a lot of questions? ● Has a calling to know what it means to live in Communion with God and live catholic? We offer an opportunity to come together in a small group setting to learn more about our Catholic faith and for those seeking a deep meaningful life with and in Christ Jesus. Sessions begin with a period of inquiry where we focus on the teachings and the experience of Church life. Then, when ready to grow in communion with Christ and his Church, we prepare individuals to celebrate the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist during the current Easter season. Separate sessions for children and youth are available and online sessions will be made available during Covid-19 with a community meeting once a month. All are welcome to participate in the process with your questions, your insights and your faith stories in a warm accepting environment. Our In-quiry sessions will begin on Sunday, September 20th at 10:30 am in the Sr. Carol room of Madden Hall. The online inquiry session will be on Wednesday, September 22nd at 6:00pm. Please contact Michelle Hollis at [email protected] if you are interested in this blessed journey.

The 2020 Census is taking place now! This is an im-portant time to be counted because the data col-lected from the census: The allocations we receive are directly tied to popu-lation numbers. Without an accurate count, we lose vital aid and services. When the state’s people are not counted, South Carolina communities lose out!

Did you know? In Fiscal Year 2016, South Carolina received nearly $12.7 billion through federal pro-grams that used 2010 census data!

THE COMPASSIONATE CAFÉ

Grief is the normal and natural reaction to loss. Unfortunately, society’s clichés about grief, “be strong”, “keep busy”, “time heals all wounds”, may have caused you to cover up your normal and natural responses to loss.

Beginning September 14, 2020, St. John the Beloved Church is sponsoring The Grief Recovery Method ® Grief Support Group, which is operated under the format and guidelines established by The Grief Recovery Institute. This action program meets weekly in the Commons from 7 - 9 PM for 8 weeks and is designed to assist people in completing the pain caused by loss.

To learn more about the Grief Recovery Method, come to the Commons at 7 P.M., Tuesday, September 8, 2020, for a short introductory program.

The facilitator for the program is Paul Brustowicz, a Certified Grief Recovery Specialist. This evidence-based, time-proven method is based in part on helping grievers create a new level of awareness. Part of the process is helping you to better understand all the different life experiences that produce grief.

For more information on the program call: Paul Brustowicz at St. John the Beloved Church, or at 732-801-8333 (cell), or send an email to [email protected].

May he and his family grow in wisdom and grace all their days!

Scripture Reflection Today’s Gospel reading is taken from a chapter of Matthew’s Gospel, which is sometimes called the “discourse on the Church” or the “church order” discourse. In this part of Matthew’s Gospel,

Jesus speaks more directly about matters of Church discipline and order. In today’s reading we find one of only three instances in which Jesus uses the word church in Matthew’s Gospel. In Matthew’s record of Jesus’ teaching, we can hear echoes of the kinds of issues faced by the early Christian community.

In the first part of the “discourse on the Church” (Matthew 18:1-14), Matthew addresses the Christian community’s concerns about rank. Jesus responds to the disciples’ question about who is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Jesus indicates that those who wish to enter the kingdom of heaven must be like children, and he cautions those leaders who might lead these “little ones” astray. He also responds with the parable of the lost sheep, indicating how God will seek out and bring back those “little ones” who have strayed.

In today’s Gospel reading, Matthew 18:15-20, Jesus addresses a common occurrence in the Christian community: a dispute between two members of the Church. Jesus outlines a procedure for settling such matters fairly. The victim should privately address the offender and attempt to resolve the dispute without outside involvement. If that fails, then the victim should bring two or three witnesses and confront the offender again. If the dispute is still unresolved, the matter should be brought to the attention of the entire community. If the offender refuses to adhere to the reparations prescribed by the community, then Jesus suggests that the offender may be expelled from the Church.

Jesus does not discourage disagreement within the community of the Church; he acknowledges the reality of conflict and error and offers his disciples a means for addressing such matters. It is in the conclusion to this teaching that the message of hope is found: Jesus is present with the community and will guide the community in its relations. If decisions are taken in prayer, then the community can be assured of God’s assistance.
