Scrapie Tags Nebraska 4-H will REQUIRE that all 4-H Market & Breeding Goats and Market & Breeding Sheep have a scrapie tag for 4-H identification in 2019.

WHAT IS SCRAPIE: Scrapie is a fatal, degenerative disease affecting the central nervous system of sheep and goats. Infected flocks that contain a high percentage of susceptible animals can experience significant production losses. Scrapie is similar to what “Mad Cow Disease” in beef animals.

WHY REQUIRE SCRAPIE: Nebraska requires sheep and goats to be officially identified on change of ownership. Nebraska Law requires more than the Federal Requirements as many of our sheep and goats are marketed to the State of Illinois.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITY: It is your responsibility as a sheep or goat producers or a person who handles sheep/goats to know and adhere to state requirements.

HOW TO OBTAIN TAGS: Only metal scrapie tags are available free of charge to producers and others who handle sheep and goats. Plastic tags and applicators for metal and plastic tags will remain available for purchase directly from approved tag manufacture. The metal tags that are provided free may be requested at the National Band and Tag Company, 859-261-2035.

CUSTOM TAGS AVAILABLE: Producers also have an option to purchase their own official ear tags/devices from approved tag companies. Call 1-866-USDA-TAG (866-873-2824) to be connected to your USDA Veterinary Services Office or State Office Veterinarian and request that a premises identification number and Flock ID be assigned to your flock.
