Scientificobjectives

Sloyan,Wijffels,Tilbrook,Warner,Bodrossy,Downes:Thefullsuiteofkeyoceanparametersandthedeepoceanheatandcarbonreservoirsremainpoorlymeasured.Thisproposalwillcompletefull-depth,high-precisionhydrographic,carbon,andtracermeasurements,along170oWfromthesea-iceedgetotheequator,tomonitoranddetectoceanvariabilityandchangeincludingchangesinthecarbonatechemistryassociatedwithacidification.Thesedata,togetherwithotherobservationaldataandnumericalmodels,willallowforthedetectionandattributionofoceanchangeandvariabilityandtoassesstheimpactoftheoceanonclimatevariability.Thishydrographicsectionwillmonitoroceanchangeandvariabilityby:

1. Directlymeasuringthefullsuiteofoceanwaterproperties(temperature,salinity,velocity,nutrients,tracersandoceanmixing)athighverticalandspatialresolutionthroughouttheentirewatercolumnandinthedeepboundarycurrents,contributingtotheinternationalGO-SHIPprogram

2. Providinghighprecisionbiogeochemicalmeasurementstomonitorchangesinoceancarbonstorageandoxygenconcentrations,contributingtotheIOCCPinternationalprogramtomonitortheglobalcarbonbudget.

3. DirectlymeasureoceanmixingtoimproveourknowledgeoftheoceanMeridionalOverturningCirculation.

4. ProvidehighprecisionbaselinedatatocalibratetheArgoarray,XBTprogram,andotherautonomousobservations(oceangliders,mooringsandsatellites)inthevicinityofthesection.

5. DeployArgofloatsforthecoremissionandcontributionstotheinternationalSOCCOMproject.

6. Map,forthefirsttime,thegenomiccharacteristicofmarinebacteriaandphytoplanktonalong170°W,aspartofalargersetofsurveysbeingcarriedoutaroundAustralia.

7. Obtainside-by-sideCTD/XBTdatafortheassessmentofbiaserrorsinXBTmeasurements.8. ObtainTritium/HeliummeasurementsintheAntarcticCircumpolarCurrent.

Voyageobjectives

Theprimaryvoyageobjectiveistoobtainrepeatoccupationsofthe155full-depthCTDandNiskincastsalongtheGO-SHIPP15Ssection,withchemistryperformedonwatercollectedat36bottlelevels.Wewillmeasuretemperature,salinity,pressure,oxygen,fluorometry,shearandmicro-scaletemperaturecontinuously,andthemajornutrients,oxygen,salinity,CFCandcarboncomponentsdiscretelyviachemicalanalysisonboard.Smallamountsofmaterialwillbefilteredandstoredforgenomicanalysesbackonland.CSIROhascompletedthislinetwicebeforeandinternationalgroupshavecompletedsimilarworkalonglinesfurthereast.Theworkplanandtimingsarebasedonthesepastvoyages.Argofloatdeploymentswillalsobecarriedout–usuallywhenjustleavingaCTDstation(SOCCOMfloats)orduringtransit(wemayslowtheshipspeedslightly).Thesewillbeovertheship’sstern(preferred).

OperationalRiskManagement

Thekeychallengearoundcompletionoftheworkprogramwillbemanagingsafeoperationsinstrongwind/waveconditionsandefficientship-timemanagementbythescienceandmarinecrew–inparticularthespeedatwhichwecanarriveonstation,deploytheCTDpackage,completetheprofile,retrieveandtiedownthepackage,getunderwaytothenextstation,completethewatersamplingandsetuptherosetteforthenextdeploymentThestationsareroughly30nmapart,thoughtheycanbecloseracrosssteeptopography.Inthedeepocean,weexpecttohavearound2.5-2.8hourstransittime(at11knots)andsoshouldhavecompletedsamplingandbereadytodeploybythetimetheshiparrivesatthenextlocation.Wherestationsareclosewemaybelimitedbywatersamplingtime.Wedonotrequiretheshiptobeexactlyonlocationtostartthecast(~within0.1ofanmofthetargetisfine)nordowerequiretoremainonlocation.OncetheCTDpackageisdeployed,themostimportantoperationalrequirementistokeepthewireasverticalaspossible(toreachtheseafloorasfastaspossiblewithsmallestwireout)andtokeepthewireawayfromtheships’hull.Thusdriftduringacastistobeexpectedandisnotproblematic.Limiteduseofthebow-thrusterispreferredduetothetimeittakestodeployanditsdisruptiveimpactoncrewsleepingbelowdecks.ThestationsofgreatestscientificvaluearethoseatthesouthernendwherethedeepoceanwarmingsignalislargestandthepastoccupationsarescantduetothepreviouslimitationsoftheMNFoperations(50oS).WehopetoworkasfarsouthandasclosetotheiceedgeastheMasterdeemssafe.FrompastexperiencebybothCSIROandoverseasteams,weexpectthegreateststorminessandworkstoppagesonleg1,likelysouthof45oS.Weatherandsea-statesmightlimitthesafetransitspeed,CTDwirespeedandattimesrequiretheshiptoceaseoperationsandbehove-to.Wehaveallottedaround72hoursoftimeforbeinghove-to(ifrequired)andalsohaveassumedaslowertransitspeedsouthof50oS.Dependingontheweathersituation,wemayworkeithernorthorsouthofstormsandfillinthegapsaftertheirpassage,asbestassessedatthetimebytheMaster,ChiefScientistandVoyageManager.However,wheresafetodoso,wehopetomaximizeshipspeedandouroperationalweatherwindowwherepossible,tocompleteasmanystationsaswecanbeforebreakingthelinetoheadintoWellingtonfortheMay20portvisit.BesidesmanagingsafeoperationsthroughSouthernOceanwaveandwindstates,wedonotviewouroperationsashighrisk.Theweatherriskwillbemanagedviadailyassessmentsbetweenthevoyageleadershipteam(Master,ChiefScientistandVoyageManager).Fatigueisakeyrisktomanage.ThishasbeengreatlymitigatedbythecrewswapinWellingtonandfielding3x8hourCTDwatches,aswellasextrahandsinsomeofthechemistrylaboratoriesonLeg1.Toallowoff-watchcrewsleepbelowdecks,minimaluseofthebowthrusterisalsodesirable.

Overallactivityplanincludingdetailsforfirst24hoursofvoyage

WewillsteamoutofHobarttoourfirstteststation(CTD001),targetinga4000mordeepersite.Thefirst24hourswillbemostlysteaming,allowingsafetyandorientationbriefingstobecarriedout.Theteststationlikelybearound11amonthesecondday(April22).ThepurposeistoconfirmtheCTDandsensoracquisitionsystemsareallworkingwellandthattheNiskinbottlesaresealingproperly.IfthereareissueswewillcorrectthemeitheronboardorreturntoHobartifrequired,and

planasecondteststationalongthetransit.Wewilltakesamplesforsalinityanalysis,andthenproceedtotrainthesciencewatchesinwatersamplingtechniques.IfallgoeswellwewillthenproceedalongagreatcirclerouteatmaximumspeedtotheP15Ssectionstart(68oSand170oW).AlongthesteamtotheP15Ssectionstart,wewilldeployseveralArgofloats–5fromArgoAustraliaand7SOLOIIfloatsfromtheScrippsInstitutionofOceanography.Thesearetargetedatsetlatitudes(longitudeswillbedependentontheroute).TheCTDwatchanddeckcrewwilldeploythefloats(whichwillbestowedintheaftinstrumentlab).Duringthetransit,wewillsetupthelaboratories,underwayloggingsystemsandcontinuetrainingtheCTDwatchesandlabteams.Thetransit,includingtheteststationwillbearound8days(at10.5knts–hopefullyshorteriffasteraverageshipspeedsareachieved).Asweneartheiceedgeat170oW,wewillneedtoassessthesouthernmostlatitudeforaCTD.WewouldliketobeasfarsouthastheMasterdeemssafe.AllCTDstationswillbefull-depthtowithin10mofthebottom,loweringat60m/minutewherepossibleandwith36Niskinbottlesfiredthroughoutthewatercolumn.Onretrievalofthepackage,weneedtotietheframedown,sealtheCTDlabandgettheshipunderwayexpeditiously.DuringLeg1inparticular,Argofloatswillbedeployedaftermanyofthestations(seeTable2),preferablyatlowspeedswhiletheshipjustleavesthesite.WewillthenworknorthwardscompletingstationsasperTable1.At12knotstransitspeedsthetypicalsteamtimeisaround2.5hoursbetweenstations,withtypicalcasttimesbeing3-4hours.Tritium/heliumsampleswillbetakenfromtheNiskinsevery1-degreelatitudespacingfrom68oSto55oS,thenevery2-degreespacingfrom55oStotheWellingtonport(about22stationsintotal).DuringsomeCTDstations,eXpendableBathyThermographswillalsobedeployedintheearlypartoftheCTDcast.Thesewillbedonefromtheship’ssternwhiletheCTDisinoperation.Two(orthree)XBTsystemswillbeusedtodeploy6XBTseachduringaCTDstation.ThreewillbedeployedwhiletheCTDisatthesurface,thenthreemorewhiletheCTDisdescending.XBTswillbedeployedevery3-5stations,dependingonhowmanyprobesareavailable.Inaddition,comparisonsofmodernDeepBlueXBTsandolderT5XBTswillbecompletedwhiletheshipisunderway.Basedonourcurrentshipspeedestimates,weanticipatecompletingstations1-60beforehavingthebreakworkforthe41hourtransittoWellingtontoarriveMay20,2016intheearlymorning.IfweareaheadofschedulewewillcontinuetocompletemorestationsworkingnorthwardbeforebreakingtheworktotransittoNewZealand.InWellingtontheCTDandmanyofthescienceteamswillchangeover.Somematerialwillbetakenofftheshipforland-basedanalysise.g.samplesinadryshipper,butthesecanbewalkedoff.WedonotanticipateanymajorloadingorunloadingofscienceequipmentinNewZealand.Leg2willcomprisetheremainingstations,nominally61-155.Thetransitbacktothelinewillbearound41hours.TherewillbesomeLeg2floatdeployments.Twoprototype‘deepSOLO’floatswillbedeployedbetween20-30oS,againafteraCTDstationhasbeencompleted.Onfinishingthelaststationattheequator,wehavearounda4daytransittoFiji,duringwhichfinalanalyseswillbecompleted,dataprocessedandlaboratoriespreparedforoffloadinginBrisbane.MostsciencecrewwilldisembarkinFiji,thoughsomeoftheunderwaychemistryteamwillremainonboard.

Piggy-backprojects(ifapplicable)Atmosphericunderwaymeasurements:CIMelitaKeywood,CSIROThescientificobjectiveofthisworkistoinvestigatethechemicalcomposition,sizedistribution,opticalpropertiesandcloudnucleatingpropertiesofmarineaerosoloverthesouthernhemispherewiththeaimofquantifyingregionalcontributionsofaerosolstoradiativeforcing.Thereiscurrentlyverylargeuncertaintyassociatedwiththedirect,semi-directandindirecteffectofaerosolsonradiativeforcing.Akeyfeatureinthisregardistheinfluenceoncloudpropertiesofcloudcondensationnuclei(CCN),theverysmallatmosphericaerosolparticlesnecessaryforthenucleationofeverysingleclouddroplet.Arecentanalysisofthe35-yearCCNconcentrationrecordatCapeGrimchallengesthecurrentacceptedwisdomoftheroleofdimethylsulfide(DMS)onCCNformationovertheSouthernOcean.Inparticular,itappearsthatDMSoxidationisonlysignificantduringthesummermonthsatCapeGrim,andinfactothersourcesandprocessesdominatethroughouttherestoftheyear(Grasperscom).ThatothersourcesandprocessesmaybesignificantinCCNproductionandmodulationhasalsorecentlybeensuggestedinareviewoftheCLAWhypothesis.Theidentityofthesesourcesremainsanopenquestion.Theworkproposedherewillbeapositivestepinaddressingthisquestion.

Facingthechallengesofunder-iceforautonomousnavigation:CIAlexForrest,UniversityofCalifornia-Davis,AMC,U.TasmaniaAccuratenavigationunderbothdriftandstationaryiceisoneofthekeyunansweredquestionsinpolarmarinescienceandengineering.Theprimaryaimsofthisprojectareto(1)estimateINSdriftandcalibrationtimes;and,(2)testtheintegrationofacousticpositioningmethodsinanINSwithinadriftingandrotatingframeofreference.Thisprojectwilldeveloperrorpropagationmodelsatincreasinglatitudesandtesttheuseofanon-stationary,shipborneacousticpositioningnetworkonasmall(<3m)AUV.Botharecriticalforrobust,accurateandreliableAUVoperationunder-ice.InorganicNitrogenuptake:CIAnyaWaite,AWI,Germany;EricRaes,UWA.Whilewearegettingbetterinsightsinthemicrobialcommunityandtheirtaxonomy,uptakeandratemeasurementsofNandCarestillverysparsethroughoutthewoldoceansandareahighprioritytoaccuratelyquantifyC,Ncyclesandtheassociatedprimaryproductivity.EspeciallyaswehavetokeepinmindthatnumericallyoutnumberedmicrobescanplayasignificantroleintheNandCcyclesoftheirecosystem.Previousstudieshaveshownthattheleastabundantspecies(inthiscasetheanaerobic,phototropicbacteriaChromatiumokeniirepresenting~0.3%ofthetotalcellnumbers),cancontributemorethan40%ofthetotalNH4

+assimilationandupto70%ofthetotalCfixation.WewillinvestigatetheroleofmicrobesintheNuptake.Whilewemaybeabletogetpresenceabsenceusingtechniquessuchasquantitativepolymerasechainreactions(qPCR),metagenomicsorhighthroughputsequencing,isotopes(stableisotopes)arenecessarytomeasureratesofnutrientutilization/remineralization.
