Join us this Spring and see our brand new exhibitions. In Gallery 1 we have Made for the Table, contemporary silver from the Goldsmiths’ Company Collection and in this space we also have Dine, an exhibition of craft that sits on the dining table. Gallery 2 showcases A Darker Thread, 12 textile makers from Wales, curated by Laura Thomas. Gallery 3 brings us Jilly Edwards: Joy – Yellow is the New Blue, a tapestry exhibition.

We also have a host of events and workshops for all ages, including Adult Masterclasses, February Half-Term Activities and the ever popular ‘Messy Play’ is back!

July 2018 will see us celebrate our 10 year anniversary of the re-launch of Ruthin Craft Centre. We will have lots of exciting exhibitions, projects and events happening throughout the year. Watch this Space!

Made for the Table presents contemporary silver from the Goldsmiths’ Company Collection, together with the curated work of leading UK artisans in furniture design, glass, ceramics and textiles. This modern table setting is introduced by examples of extraordinary antique silver acquired over several hundred years by the Company. This reflects its long history of patronage and contextualises the outstanding work of makers practicing in Britain today.

The exhibition demonstrates both a continuation of silversmithing techniques and innovation in the treatment of the material. The process of hand-forging allows cutlery to be created in precisely the same way that it was made over 500 years ago. However, makers continue to explore and experiment with new approaches, influenced by developments in technology.

Dine is an exhibition of craft that sits on the dining table. Running along side the Goldsmiths’ Company exhibition Made for the Table, this supporting showcase brings together a large selection of stunning pieces in silver, ceramic, glass and textiles. Included are pieces by many of the makers’ that appear in the Goldsmiths’ show, and all available to purchase.

A Darker Thread

Wales has a much celebrated tradition of creating both utilitarian and decorative textiles of distinctive design. From power-loomed blankets to hand-stitched quilts, textiles are a key part of Welsh visual culture and history.

Whilst ‘A Darker Thread’ takes this heritage as its starting point, twelve contemporary artists, designers and makers have been invited to exhibit work which subverts these expectations.

Jilly Edwards: JOYYellow is the New Blue

‘These woven tapestries are inspired by glimpses and memories of journeys, whether long train journeys or a trip to the local café. The start for this work was a set of journeys from Exeter to Edinburgh and to East Anglia. It took me through wonderfully diverse terrain and it was full of the colour yellow of Oilseed Rape.’

‘I watched as the field sizes and divisions changed, a dry stonewall, a hedge, a wooden fence and huge fields with no divisions. The work is about the surface, its depth, its construction, the quiet, crisp whites, the dense warm yellow, sensuous dark soil with lozenge shaped stone walls with bright yellow lichen patches. The spaces are important, as are the gaps between.’ Jilly Edwards 2017

Taking inspiration from the current exhibitions come and make you own cutlery set. Using a range of materials we will be working towards making our own unique set of eating tools.

Craft CountsJuly 2018 will see us celebrate our 10 year anniversary of the re-launch of the Ruthin Craft Centre.

We have an exciting new programme of events and activities to offer throughout 2018 entitled – Craft Counts.

This will celebrate the 100 plus exhibitions we have shown during the 10 years, whilst also looking at and exploring the 10 craft materials/themes to be found on the 1–10 year anniversary lists; from paper, through cotton and wood to tin.

We are pleased to welcome back willow artist Juliette Hamilton who by popular demand will be showing you how to make either a large Hare or in preparation for the arrival of spring (and time to start preparing the garden) a Dragonfly obelisk with Butterfly sticks.Juliette will talk you through the preparation of the willow and then take you step by step through the construction of the sculpture.

Be prepared for a physical day of working and to go home with a very impressive sculpture! A pair of secateurs and an apron would be good to bring. Suitable for all levels, some experience of working with willow would be of an advantage.

Simeon Jones Bookbinding MasterclassSaturday 21 and Sunday 22 April 10.30am – 4.30pm £120 Includes light lunch

On this intensive two day course participants will make a quarter leather notebook (leather spine and marbled paper boards).Simeon will take you through the process step by step from making the text block, folding and hand

sewing the sections onto tapes to finally pressing your book.This will be a full weekend of creative endeavour, going home with new skills and a new book. This is an intermediate level course and requires a reasonable level of hand skills, (having participated in a previous bookbinding course would be an advantage) and as such is not suitable for younger participants.The cost of the course includes a bone folder and paring knife. When booking please specify if you are right or left handed as the knives are specific.

You will discuss different warp thickness and how to warp them onto frames, changes in thickness of yarns and different yarns used to create textures as well as looking at designing from collecting, drawing, cartoon making. You will then have the tools and knowledge to start a tapestry – taking the terror out of designing to create the beginnings of your own masterpiece.

We are pleased to welcome back textile designer Janet Bolton. The main idea of this workshop is to encourage participants to develop their own ideas, with suitable suggestions and help from the very beginning. No need to have a set idea in mind but do come with a simple idea if you would like to.Working directly with the fabric Janet will explain and demonstrate the simple cutting and sewing techniques required, and describe the excitement of letting the idea change and develop right down to the very last stitch.Throughout the two days Janet will demonstrate the importance of presenting and framing your work in a way sympathetic to the composition as part of a group appraisal.
