June’s Book Review

The Chilbury Ladies’ Choir by Jennifer Ryan

Told through journals and let-ters, this debut novel is set in the fictional village of Chilbury, England, in the county of Kent. It takes place during six months from March 1940 to Septem-ber 1940. Most of the men of the village have left to fight the war. When the vicar disbands the church choir because there are

no male voices, the women of the choir refuse to let that hap-pen. Primrose Trent, a music professor, helps organize the ladies’ singing group. In the group are Kitty Win-throp, age thirteen, and her sister Venetia, eighteen. They are the daughters of the Briga-dier whose only son has just died in the war. The rich bully is willing to do almost anything to insure his wife’s coming baby is a boy.

Also in the choir is Mrs. Tilling who is a widowed nurse and whose son is going to war soon. Living at the Winthrop mansion with the sisters is Silvie, a ten-year-old Jewish evacuee. Then there is Edwina Palty, an un-scrupulous midwife who is in-volved in an illegal deal with the Brigadier. This book shows how the wom-en of the village face the war bravely and highlights how music may heal.

Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter

The story begins in 1962. On a rocky

patch of the sun-drenched Italian coast-

line, a young innkeeper, chest-deep in

daydreams, looks out over the incandes-

cent waters of the Ligurian Sea and spies

an apparition: a tall, thin woman, a vision

in white, approaching him on a boat. She

is an actress, he soon learns, an American

starlet, and she is dying.

And the story begins again today, half a

world away, when an elderly Italian man

shows up on a movie studio’s back lot—

searching for the mysterious woman he

last saw at his hotel decades earlier.

What unfolds is a dazzling, yet deeply

human, roller coaster of a novel, span-

ning fifty years and nearly as many

lives. From the lavish set of

Cleopatra to the shabby

revelry of the Edinburgh

Fringe Festival, Walter in-

troduces us to the tangled

lives of a dozen unforgetta-

ble characters: the star-

struck Italian innkeeper and

his long-lost love; the heroi-

cally preserved producer

who once brought them to-

gether and his idealistic

young assistant; the army

veteran turned fledgling

novelist and the rakish Richard Burton

himself, whose appetites set the whole

story in motion—along with the hus-

bands and wives, lovers and

dreamers, superstars and los-

ers, who populate their world

in the decades that follow.

Gloriously inventive, constant-

ly surprising, Beautiful Ruins is

a story of flawed yet fasci-

nating people, navigating the

rocky shores of their lives

while clinging to their improb-

able dreams.

--Summary from book

description

Book of the Month

Please welcome Kris, our newest staff member. She started at the library in January and you’ll find her at the front desk a couple evenings a week. In her own words, here’s a brief introduction. I retired from the Wisconsin State Journal editorial page in 2014 after 19 years at that newspaper, follow-ing 15 years at the Lodi Enterprise, for a total of 34 years in journalism. I grew up in Milwaukee, but moved to the Lake Wisconsin area when I began college at UW-Madison. I live with my husband in rural Lodi. Our son and his wife live in Chicago. He’s a film producer, and his first feature

film, Uncle John, was partly filmed in the Sauk Prairie and Lodi area. I enjoy biking, travel, crochet and other needlework and reading, es-pecially mysteries. My favorite place in the world the world is Door Coun-ty. I’ve a l w a y s wan ted to work in a li-brary, so I’m very exc i ted to be here!

Thursday, March 9, 6:45 p.m.

The library’s Mystery Book Club will discuss mys-

teries by Mel Starr in March. Choose a title of

your own or select one from the display in the

library. New members are always welcome! Con-

tact June at 643-8318 with questions.
