On Thursday, internationally acclaimed Russian Duo returns to Nighttown. The duo features OlegKruglyakov on balalaika & vocals, & Terry Boyarsky on piano. They are actually Cleveland residents, butthey tour the world. Enjoy some authentic Russian music right here at Nighttown.

Then on Saturday, don't miss The Four Freshmen. TheFreshmen have been touring since the late 40's, they haverecorded over 60 albums, six Grammy nominations, and dozens ofawards for "Best Vocal Group". Their harmonies are legendary,and influenced numerous artists including Brian Wilson of theBeach Boys. And come and welcome their brand new member JonGaines. A "Don't Miss" concert.

All seating is based on the time that you arrive for theshow and based on how many people are in your partyand where we have tables of that size. You may besharing a table with other people.

Nighttown Student Discount PolicyStudents up to age 26 are 1/2 off the regular price. Student priced tickets are only available the night of theshow, are available only at the door, and are subject toavailability. Students must have a photo ID from agenerally-recognized high school, college or university. Full-paying ticket holders get priority on admission andseating. Certain select shows have no discount based onarrangements with the artist. On evenings when thereare two shows (i.e. shows at 7 & 9PM), the discount isonly good for the second show. Students under the age of18 must be accompanied by an adult paying full price inorder to be eligible for the discount.

From Russian roots to classical favorites, from vocals to ragtime, the Russian Duo isa magical collaboration between virtuoso balalaika and concert piano, creating avibrant, cross-cultural musical experience.

Russian Duo is an international project born out of a love of traditional music andclassical elegance. Oleg Kruglyakov is a balalaika virtuoso from Siberia and TerryBoyarsky is an American concert pianist with Russian heritage. They have joinedforces to perform exuberant, compelling, magical concerts.

The Duo takes audiences on a journey across the span of Russian culture, rangingfrom humorous pieces, elaborate sets of variations, pulsating dance music,rhythmic folk songs, gypsy melodies, and lyrical romances. In addition, theirprogram combines the diverse flavors of traditional Russian folk songs, chambermusic classics and unique transcriptions of favorites from around the world.

Oleg Kruglyakov was born in Omsk City, Siberia, Russia. Educated at the renownedEkaterinburg Conservatory in conducting, balalaika performance and ethnicsinging, he performed as balalaika soloist with many Folk Russian groups, touringthroughout Russia, Siberia, Ukraine, France, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Maltaand Turkmenistan.

Terry Boyarsky has been performing chamber music for over 35 years and is aninternationally recognized educator in music and movement. She hascollaborated with instrumentalists, singers and dancers across the United States,Canada, France, Switzerland, Thailand, and Venezuela.

Legendary Vocal Group returns to Nighttown!

The Four Freshmen have released over 60 albums, won numerous DownBeat andJazzTimes readers’ polls, and have been honored with the Satchmo Award forunique and enduring contribution to the living history of jazz.

The Four Freshmen remain the Acclaimed Masters of Harmony presenting theirunique brand of vocal pop harmony of headlining concerts around the globe. As theWall Street Journal proclaims, “Long live The Four Freshmen, may they nevergraduate.”

TOMMY BOYNTON is the newest member of The Four Freshmen, singing 1st tenorand playing bass. Growing up in Aurora, Co., his musical journey began in the 3rdgrade, singing in a children’s chorus, and studying piano and drums. Tommy’s lovefor music lead him to Phil Mattson’s prestigious School for Music Vocations inCreston, Iowa. He then graduated from the New England Conservatory in Boston,MA, where he studied with Dominique Eade and Ran Blake. Boynton continued toshare his love and passion for music by returning to SMV to teach. Tommy hasshared the stage with several Grammy nominated musicians, including jazz pianistFred Hersch, and critically acclaimed jazz vocalist Kate McGarry. While on the road,he does miss his kitties, Alice and Little Brother, more than anything.Image

STEIN MALVEY sings the 2nd tenor and plays guitar with The Four Freshmen. Hebegan his musical journey at age four, studying piano at St. Olaf College in hishometown of Northfield, MN. Growing restless with classical repertoire, hediscovered guitar at age 12, and fell in love. Just two years later he was playingguitar professionally. He graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in guitarperformance from Lawrence University Conservatory of Music. Stein spent years inboth the New York and Minneapolis music scenes, recording and touring withgroups in many genres: rock, pop, r&b, soul, funk, jazz, country, and avant-garde.When he isn’t touring with The Four Freshmen, Stein lives in Los Angeles.

Jon Gaines was introduced to the world of music at the age of 5 when he begantaking piano lessons from his grandmother in his hometown, Derry NH. By fifthgrade, young Jon was expanding his musical talents to the trumpet, but it wasn’tuntil Jon first heard a recording of Louis Armstrong that a passion was sparked. After high school, Jon attended the prestigious New England Conservatory where hefurthered his studies in jazz improvisation. Along with all his instrumental studieson trumpet and piano Jon also undertook several years of vocal instruction beforeearning his bachelors degree in 2014.

BOB FERREIRA auditioned for The Four Freshmen in 1992 for bass voice andpercussion while a music student at Central Washington University. The groupasked Ferreira to join, presenting him with a difficult decision of whether or not toleave his academics behind in lieu of a career in entertainment. Bob is still pleasedwith his decision and has not looked back since. He enjoys being part of such aniconic musical legacy having performed in fifty states, ten countries, and on nineFreshmen recordings. When not on the road with The Four Freshmen, Ferreiraoccasionally freelances as a drummer in Las Vegas.

We had a very unfortunate death in the community. Alicia Marotta Linihan owner ofthe popular Marotta's Restaurant on Lee Road died of a heart attack at age 43and left behind four children under the age of 10.

A benefit for the family will take place on January 22nd from 4-7pm. Tickets are$50/adults, $25/children and include an Italian Dinner and two drink tickets, alongwith live music featuring Harry Bacharach.

Alicia was well loved by the Cleveland restaurant community. We have had anoverwhelming response to this event and as a result all food, drink and raffle items arebeing donated. 100% of each ticket goes to the Linihan family! We hope you can joinus.

Cabaret, Musical Theater, and Jazz from NYC Vocalist RandieShane & Cleveland Pianists Jonathan Hooper Live at Nighttown!Randie Shane is a Northwestern University Theater graduate, and has had a 13year career in music theater before turning her performance focus towardscabaret. She has sang and danced in regional theaters from Candlelight, Chicagoto Stages, St. Louis, and has been featured in the National Tours of Showboat andSwing! The Musical. Some of you may have seen her brief appearance with AnnHamptom Callaway and the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra in 2007. Randie has producedand performed in five different cabaret shows in New York City, and has played TheDuplex, Don't Tell Mama's and The Metropolitan Room. She could not be morepleased to add Nighttown to this list.

Growing up in Cleveland, Ohio, Jonathan Hooper studied classical piano and voicebefore beginning to explore jazz. While majoring in graphic design at FlaglerCollege in St. Augustine, Florida, Jonathan regularly performed at a piano bar andcontinued to develop his fluency in jazz piano technique. After graduating and

continued to develop his fluency in jazz piano technique. After graduating andreturning to Ohio, he began studying online with Dave Frank of the Dave FrankSchool of Jazz in New York City. Jonathan appears regularly at Hyde Park PrimeSteakhouse in Beachwood and has performed solo and in various ensembles atprivate events and venues across Northeast Ohio, including the BOP STOP, BLUJazz+, Vosh, and others.

John McCutcheon is one of folk music’s great living storytellers. Revered aroundthe world for his thoughtful and inspiring songwriting and mastery of the hammereddulcimer, John McCutcheon’s career spans over twenty albums and seven Grammynominations.

Wisconsin native John McCutcheon is an American folk music singer and multi-instrumentalist who has produced 34 albums since the 1970s.He is regarded as amaster of the hammered dulcimer, and is also proficient on many otherinstruments including guitar, banjo, autoharp, mountain dulcimer, fiddle, andjawharp.

McCutcheon, whose family background encompasses farmers and shoemakers,started playing guitar in the early 60s. He picked up a great number of traditionalAmerican songs and tunes from the Appalachians, and learned a wealth ofinstruments, including fiddle, banjo, autoharp and, most notably, the hammer-dulcimer. His playing of the latter encompasses folk, classical, jazz and many otherelements. McCutcheon's extensive recording legacy has attracted a string ofawards, and also seven Grammy nominations. He has recorded exclusively forRounder Records since the early 80s. Howjadoo was the first of several children'salbums which have established McCutcheon as arguably the leading artist withinthe genre. In the 90s his children's recordings included the Grammy-nominatedFour Seasons series, which featured many compositions co-written with long-timefriend and collaborator, Si Kahn. McCutcheon has also collected and recorded agood deal of Nicaraguan music, which was released by Rounder as a double album,Nicaragua Presente!, in 1989. McCutcheon's prolific work rate has includedproduction work for several other folk artists, and he has also had publishedsongbooks and instructional materials.

"Horns & Things" is the powerhouse contemporary jazz ensemble that has pleasedaudiences throughout the years! The group was founded by saxophonists J.T.Lynch and Ken LeeGrand. In an effort to find a place for their music, which could fitthe modern genre and fulfill the needs if the Main Stream market, they teamed withBassist, Derrick James, Keyboardist, Sakait Baksar and Drummer, Ray Harvin toform the nucleus of the band. Percussionist Bill Ransom has been an addition onvarious recording sessions and performances. This phenomenal group has beenperforming for over twenty years.

They have shared the spotlight with a who's who list of legendary performers fromDexter Gordon, Freddie Hubbard and Joe Sample; to contemporary artists thatinclude; Pieces of a Dream, Najee, Ronnie Laws, Kim Waters, Alex Bugnon andMarion Meadows. Featuring: Nicki Parrott-acoustic bass & vocals, Bobby Floyd-piano, & Bob Breithaupt-drums.Born in Newcastle, Australia, Nicki Parrott started her musical training at age fourwith the piano, and at 15 switched to double bass.

After graduating high school she moved to Sydney to study jazz at the New SouthWales Conservatorium of Music where she studied with various bassists includingvisiting artists Ray Brown and John Clayton.

Nicki was the recipient of two awards, a scholarship to Pan Pacific Music Camps atthe age of 16, and first place in the 1992 Jazz Action Society’s Annual SongCompetition for her composition “Come and Get It”. Nicki came to New York in May

In June 2000, Nicki began performing on Monday nights at the Iridium Jazz Club withthe legendary guitarist and inventor, Les Paul. As part of the Les Paul Trio, Nickiworked side-by-side with guitar greats from Paul McCartney, Slash, Steve Miller tofellow Aussie, Tommy Emmanuel.

Since then she has performed with such notable musicians as Michel Legrand, JoeWilder, Randy Brecker, Clark Terry, Jose Feliciano, Bucky Pizzarelli, John Pizzarelli,Dick Hyman, Patti Labelle & the New York Pops Orchestra, Harry Allen, WarrenVache, Marlena Shaw, David Krakauer, Ken Peplowski, Ann Hampton Callaway, BillMays, Scott Hamilton, Lillian Boutte, Larry Carlton and Houston Person, to name afew.

In 2007 and 2008, Nicki received back to back honors for Swing Journal’s Best JazzVocal Album (“Moon River” and “Fly Me to The Moon”, respectively).

Nicki has performed at most major festivals around the globe including the MaryLou Williams Jazz Festival, Newport Jazz Festival, Jazz in July at the 92nd Street Y,Detroit Jazz Festival, Jazz Ascona and Bern Jazz Festival in Switzerland and manyothers.

Bobby Floyd's talent has launched him into a very rewarding career, putting himin demand and making him one of the favorite, first-call pianists/organists for manywell known artists. He has traveled the world accompanying Ray Charles on pianoand organ. He currently makes guest appearances with some of the mostdistinguished orchestras, including The Boston Pops, The Rochester Philharmonic,and The Detroit Symphony. He is presently the feature pianist for the world-famousand legendary Count Basie Orchestra. He also tours nationally and internationallyas organist for the Grammy Award winning Dr. John.

In his hometown, Columbus Ohio, Bobby is the feature pianist & organist with theColumbus Jazz Orchestra.

Bob Breithaupt enjoys one of America’s most diverse musical careers. He hasappeared with a virtual “Who’s Who” of great jazz talents such as Terry Gibbs, JohnPizzarelli, Kirk Whalum, and dozens of others. He regularly performs with many ofthe nation’s finest orchestras along with trumpet virtuoso Byron Stripling andBroadway star Sandy Duncan.

Bob is Professor of Music and Department Chair of Performance Studies at CapitalUniversity in Columbus, Ohio.

Billy Harper, Cecil McBee, George Cables, EddieHenderson, and Billy Hart all came up in the headyera of the mid ‘60s. It was a period that found thedimensions of hard bop morphing from their original

designs, and each of these guys helped facilitate the process as members of someof the most important bands of the era. Hart and Henderson were members ofHerbie Hancock’s groundbreaking Mwandishi group; Cecil McBee anchored CharlesLloyd’s great ’60s quartet alongside Keith Jarrett and Jack DeJohnette; Billy Harperwas part of Lee Morgan’s last group, as well as being a member of Max Roach’sQuartet and Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers; while George Cables held downthe piano chair in numerous bands including groups led by Sonny Rollins, JoeHenderson, Freddie Hubbard, Dexter Gordon and Art Pepper.

David Weiss and Donald Harrison, from a morerecent generation and the youngest members of theband, are experts in this forthright lingo, havinggained experience performing with Art Blakey,Bobby Hutcherson, Freddie Hubbard, CharlesTolliver, Roy Haynes and Herbie Hancock.

Each member of the Cookers has spent time leadinghis own series of groups as well, and each has akeenly individual sound. But it’s the unmistakablepower of teamwork that makes this music socommanding and resonates with a kind of depth andbeauty that speaks of the seasoned track record ofits principals (combined, the group has over 250years of experience in the jazz world and has been apart of over 1,000 recordings). You can feel thecollective weight of that experience in their CDs andespecially in their live performances. Since thisversion of the band was solidified in 2007 the group

Rising Trumpet Star Dominick Farinacci leads Dynamic Sextet live at Nighttown!

With Special Guest NYC Jazz Vocalist Shenel Johns in her Cleveland debut!

Dominick Farinacci recently released his Mack Avenue Records debut, "Short Stories" -- acompelling suite of music with a repertoire that spans genres and generations united bythe trumpeter/composer's soulful conception. Bringing together songs from Tom Waits,Horace Silver, Dianne Reeves and the Gipsy Kings as well as original compositions,Farinacci has managed to create his own musical universe, aided by musicians of thehighest caliber. All of the songs have a narrative that any listener can relate to.

Farinacci had already achieved enough stature by his mid-teens that Wynton Marsalisoffered to help him set his sights on coming to New York, and by 2001, Farinacci was oneof only four trumpeters in the world to be selected as the inaugural students in The JuilliardSchool's first jazz curriculum.

Life itself has many different sorts of mentorship built into it. A life in the arts can't existwithout these kinds of relationships, and Short Stories is the fruit of the coming together oftwo kindred spirits, Farinacci and LiPuma, from the same home town (Cleveland, Ohio),separated by just under half a century in age. What unites them is a clear, moern aestheticvision that combines the highest musical standards with a desire to be agents of change.

Amazingly, Farinacci found time during his Middle East years to also play an integral rolein the conception and build out of Cuyahoga Community College's Tommy LiPuma Centerfor Creative Arts.

There are so many superlatives thrown around these days that they seem to have losttheir effect; but as this unique and deeply grounded album sinks into your consciousness,you will undoubtedly come to the conclusion that Dominick Farinacci is not only one of thetruly outstanding musicians of his generation, but also that what is behind the music isnothing short of miraculous. In Farinacci's own words: "While Short Stories is the title ofthis particular recording, it has come to represent a culmination of things I'm mostpassionate about - performance, education, music & wellness and community-basedcultural collaborations - unfolding in the music and touring around the world."

With a voice that embodies grace andpassion and a personal style thatsways effortlessly from Jazz to R&B toGospel, Shenel Johns has emerged asone of the shining stars of hergeneration.

Shenel has developed her own eclecticstyle, counting among her influencesElla Fitzgerald, Abbey Lincoln, andSarah Vaughn.

Returning recently from Qatar where she served a musical residency at Jazz at LincolnCenter Doha, Shenel next honored Billie Holiday as part of JALC’s New York production of“Billie and the Boys.” And has performed a tribute to another of her idols, Lena Horne, atNew York City’s famed Appel Theater.

When she is not singing, Shenel is working behind the scenes in programming at Jazz atLincoln Center, Harlem Stage, and other non-profit organizations that advocate for andsupport the arts.

Stacey Richardson Crawford, also knownas "Sarah's Girl”, started her career at thetender age of 3 when she began singing withher family's gospel choir, the Weeden FamilySingers.

After years of honing her craft, Staceystepped onto the big stage and began singingbackground for such artists as Ollie Woodson,formerly of the Temptations, Phil Perry, andthe late Gerald Levert and Anthony Hamiltonfor more than 10 years.

Stacey has performed throughout the UnitedStates and in major overseas markets such

as London, UK, Amsterdam, Netherlands, Seoul, Korea, Martinique and more than15 Caribbean islands.

While performing on The Late Show with David Letterman, Stacey was asked by themusic director, Paul Shaffer, to sing along with his band at the 2009, 2012, and2015 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies.

Stacey launched her solo career in June 2011. She released her debut CD, “AllAbout Me” which featured her single “Tonight”.

Growing up in suburban Cleveland, Ohio as a “PK”(preacher’s kid), Stephen Fowler’s musictestimonial starts off like so many others: “I was notallowed to listen to anything other than gospelmusic, so I cut my teeth on The Winans, John P. Kee,The Mighty Clouds of Joy and Commissioned.” Itwasn’t until Stephen stumbled across old 8-tracktapes of Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin did hediscover a world outside of gospel.

Like Roy Ayers, George Benson, and Patrice Rushen, Norman Connors is best knownfor his major RB hits but started out as a jazz improviser. The drummer/composerwas born and raised in Philadelphia, where he lived in the same neighborhood asBill Cosby and became interested in jazz when he was only a child. Connors was injunior high when he began sneaking into jazz clubs and sat in for Elvin Jones at aJohn Coltrane gig.

Connors went on to study music at Philly's Temple University and the Juilliard Schoolof Music in New York. Gigs with Jackie McLean, Jack McDuff and Sam Riversfollowed, and he was first recorded as a sideman when Archie Shepp employed himon his 1967 Impulse session Magic of JuJu.

After touring with Pharoah Sanders and playing on several of his albums, Connorssigned with Buddah's Cobblestone label in 1972 and recorded his first album as aleader, Dance of Magic. A few more jazz-oriented Cobblestone and Buddah datesfollowed, and it was in 1975 that Connors made R&B his main priority with SaturdayNight Special (which included the number ten soul hit "Valentine Love"). The rest ofthe 1970s found Connors featuring R&B singers prominently (including MichaelHenderson, Jean Carn, and the late Phyllis Hyman) and scoring such R&B hits as"We Both Need Each Other," "Once I've Been There," and the lovely "You Are MyStarship."

Currently Norman Connors is touring in support of his latest CD "Star Power" onShanachie records. He will be featuring his six piece touring group and promises toperform all of his classic hits.
