Example 1 : Mali  «mobile» submersible pump systems

• System Type 1 : Submersible solarpumps  with mobile module support (Solsuisse Mali innovation)

• technical specs:  DC  pumps with MPPT controller, TMH 20 m , solar capacity (2 modules with each 150 – 175 W capacity)= 300 – 350 W

• Yields between 8 – 22 m3/day (depending on pumpdepth and solar hours per day)

• These systems have been chosen 2008 on demand of malian small farmers and suit to most boreholes and open wells used for vegetable growers (maraîcher(e)s) in Mali .

• Price of pumpingsystem with pump, MPPT controller, 20 m of submersible cable, 2 modules 175W/24V, mobile module support, riserpipe, wellhead (ramp with watermeter) without storagetank and distributionsystem (e.g. drippirrigation)  incl. installation and training for users by Solsuisse Mali approx. U$ 3000 ‐ 4000.‐ (depends on quantities and locations, Mali is very large…)

• Best for small farmers groups and e.g. women’s associations (association de maraîchères), private professuonal producers

AdvantagesMobility secures the modules  from theft and makes them multifunctional:  MUS  e.g.

1) for waterpumping > 1.1 for drinking water for  schools, healthposts etc  and/or small villages ( > normally bigger capacities, fixed installations, see example)and/or1.2 for agricultural production, e.g. vegetable growing    >  revenues   !  >

payback of microcredits1.3 many times mixed uses

2) for batterie charging (> light, > telecommunications, >TV, >radio, > refrigeration), mobile phone charging, computer, cameras , internet etc

Secures the solarmodules from theft, because the faqrmers can bring the modules home in the evening.

Possibility to create microenterprises to pump water, charge batteries etc

Visit of a FAO delegation at the demosite SOTUBA (Bamako) of the malian ministry of agriculture MAG, PCDA programmefor the competitiveness and diversification in agriculture

This pumpunit pumps about 25 m3/day for a 2 hectarevegetable plot for a womens association (146 members) in Djenne, Mali

This project has started in 2008 and has been supported by the Swiss Platform for the Promotion of Renewable Energies in International Cooperation (www.repic.ch, more informations see there).Apart from local trials to connect the pumpsystems with other solar applications, which caused some breakdowns, no major technical problems have occurred with the solar pumping systemsinthe last few years. Most of the problems have been caused by waterstorage and or the waterdistribution systems (see also recent IEA study).

The biggest challenge now is to convince donors, partners and especially microfinance institutions, that such systems are an economical viable tool for african small farmers to produce more food and that it pays back within 2 – 3 years.

Wirz Solar Gmbh and Solsuisse Mali are therefore presently prepairing the collection of the data of the 24 functioning systems in Mali and Burkina Faso (and soon in Ivory Coast and Guinée Conakry) to elaborate a

technical and agroeconomical reference document including

life cycle costs of the systemsagricultural production data for various crops, about irrigated areas with/without dripirrigation and also a comparison between small dieseldriven motorpumps and solar systemsadvantages and problems encountered.

The malian Ministry of Agriculture and its worldbank‐funded PCDA programme (Programme de Compétitivité et DiversificationAgricole) have made some tests and investigations about the production of crops with the combination of these solarpump units withdripirrigation at their demonstration plots in Bamako (Sotuba), Mopti and Sikasso. In their report they say that this combination can be used to irrigate areas of 1,5 – 2 ha for fruittrees/arboriculture and 0,5 – 1 ha for vegetable growing

Sensibilisation for management, continuous trainings of watercommittees and local technicians in the villages, stocks of spareparts and regular monitoring bylocal partners (e.g. communes or NGO’s) are crucial for sustainable functioning of the systems ! (>> Formation technique continue et de gestion continue AVANT, PENDANT et  APRES les installations)

Only recently, Wirz Solar Gmbh and Solsuisse Mali started a Swiss supported pilotproject to make a South – South Know‐How transfer and capacity building for solar pumping fromMali > Haiti  (October – November 2011)and soon we will also do it vice‐versa from Haiti > Mali for the new solar drive unit forhandpumps

1)      Submersible pumps in Haiti :

•The first three submersible pumpunits 350 W/TMH 20m have been installed in Haiti :

•two in public schools which had no watersupply (as most of the schools in Haiti) :

•Ecole Nationale de Soisson (600 students) in Port au Prince and •Ecole Nationale Charles Belaire in Verrette (1100 students, Department Centre).

•In collaboration with the UNICEF «WASH in SCHOOLS» programme, we will install further systems , e.g. 4 more with the Partnerorganization PLAN INTERNATIONAL

•The third system was installed as demosystem in the city of Leogane, which was heavily destroyed by the january 2010 earthquake and where Wirz Solar Gmbh has presently its new haitian base.

2)     Introduction and test of the new Solar motor drive unit (SWP Solar Water Pump) for handpumps

•In the first week of novembre , Wirz Solar Gmbh and Solsuisse Mali (with its visiting technician and trainer of trainers forsolarpumping Karim Traore had the chance to test the first solar driven unit which can be installed on existing handpumps.Afterthe adaptation to the Mark II Pump, the first test was made on 4th and 5th of november 2011.

• Type of system :

• Swiss Solar Water Pump (very efficient, optimized solar motor for handpumps

• Solar driven motor/electronic regulation unit installed onto existing handpumps, e.g Taradev, Mark II

• First Tests ongoing e.g in Haiti, India, Bangladesh, Ghana, Nepal and soon also in Mali

RWSN IA PVP Task 9 Kampala 02.11.2011

This unit pumped during the first testsbeginning november 2011 in Leogane, Haiti, approximnatively 5‐6 m3 between 9.00‐15.00.The motor can be decoupled and people canpump water with the handle when there is no sun.See special presentation
