A Happy New Year to everyone. I’m back in circulation again, having been
very spoilt whilst staying with my son and daughter-in-law in Perth Australia.
Very strange spending Christmas in temperatures up in the 40’s.
Yes, I did come back to a new Great-Grandson weighing in at 8lbs 14ozs
with a mop of dark hair. He’s lovely! I would say that, wouldn’t I?
Another bit of good news. I have been fortunate enough to find someone to help me with
the Rural Roundup. Mr Joe Wall has moved to Balmoral Road, Kingsdown with his wife
Jenny. They are very experienced as they have been joint editors producing a Community
Magazine for some years where they lived previously. Lucky old me, I will now only have
to do half the work!!!
Next month sees another year of Rural Roundup. Here we go into the fifth year.
Doesn’t seem possible, does it? Time again for us to receive donations from anyone who
feels they would like to contribute. Same arrangement as usual, depending which area you
live in. You may hand it to your distributor, if you live in Kingsdown you may drop it into
me, post it through the door of the Rectory or pop it in the box the Conservation Group has
at the Post Office and they will pass it on. Ringwould residents can give their contribution to Jean Winn or drop it through the treasurer’s door.
I can’t end the year without thanking everyone who helps towards making Rurual
Roundup such a successful publication. Advertisers, contributors, distributors, Alan Smith,

Dear Friends
It is with great sadness that Sister Aileen is leaving our Benefice and that Well Cottage is being sold. This message is to you from Sister Aileen: “Since I joined the Community of the Sisters of the Church, almost 30 years ago, I have come to accept change as part of my
life. People have the idea that the Religious Life is all the same, that nothing changes. That may have been so in the past, but our modern world constantly faces us with change and Religious Communities, and the Church itself, has to be prepared to weigh things in the balance and decide what really is unimportant and can be let go of. It is almost three years since I came to Kingsdown, though in many ways it feels longer. I have got to know a lot of people, have been able to share my time and my faith within the four parishes, and have become part of the community. Now, change is called for again. My Community needs me back at the convent and as CSC has first call on my time and commitment, I need to go. By the time you are reading this, I will have moved and Well Cottage is up for sale. There are so many people I will miss greatly, so many things shared - ministry, talk, laughter. However many times I move, I always take something with me of people and places. There will always be specks of love and friendship which over the years will rise to the surface and bring a smile to my lips and a stirring of my heart. Thank you for welcoming me into your lives. Thank you, too, to the four parishes for the leaving gifts you have given me. I am overwhelmed at your generosity! There will be more things to remind me of your love and acceptance, alongside some very rich memories.” Sister Aileen leaves us with our thanks and very best wishes for the future. First World War Centenary Commemoration This year there will be a number of local and national events in commemoration of the 1st World War. We will be opening our churches for prayer on Monday 4th August to mark the commencement of war – so please look out for further notices. Also, if anyone has a family member or friend who was lost during the war, I would love to hear from you. We will be marking Armistice Day on 11th November at services of thanksgiving and peace and would welcome your help in putting together an appropriate programme. I look forward to hearing from you. RINGWOULD READERS Our group was established in September 2010 and we meet about every four to five weeks in the Village Pub, The Five Bells. During our time we have reached a membership of 12 but due to other commitments some members have left; we have a ‘core membership’ of seven now and would welcome any lady who lives in Ringwould and would like to join us. Having visited the village and carried out a survey they can give us a 15Mbps supply using a small transmitter would be placed on the church tower There would be an installation charge of £99 per household and a new router would be required. Auction of Quality Items St John’s Heritage Association is holding an Auction of Quality Items in St John’s Church, Kingsdown, on Friday 28th February 2014, commencing at 8.00pm prompt. Punters are invited to bring quality items with them for auctioning and a minimum of 50% of all proceeds are to be given to the church. All items unsold are to be
taken back home by their owners. The doors will open at 6.30pm to enable items to be numbered, displayed and examined by prospective buyers. Sellers are requested to note their names on the underside of items to be sold to enable their percentage of the sale price to be returned to them. A book will be kept of all items sold and purchasers will be required to settle their purchases at the end of the Auction. Cheques are be made out to St John’s Heritage Association. The percentage that is to be returned to the sellers will be forwarded to them within the following week. There will be no entry fee but donations for refreshments, which will be avail-able prior to the Auction, would be appreciated. By the time you read this, we will be well into the first term of 2014. Over this academic year the school is supporting two charities – Breakthrough Breast Cancer and Demelza House. These charities were chosen by the children in Years 5 & 6, and the fundraising is being led by our charity monitors – Jamie, Ronnie and Luke. Fundraising events planned include a ‘Clown Day’ and speakers from both charities have led assemblies in school. As well as supporting these two charities the school held
a one off fundraising event for ‘Save the Children’ Charity. After a fascinating talk by Sarah Spong from Save the Children about the tragic events in the Philippines. A request came from the School Council to see what we could do to help. In response to this request Mrs Waite organised one of her famous ‘Big Breakfasts’ for the children and their parents raising £289.56. Finally, as this article has focussed on charity work, it is fitting to mention that one of our children has recently received an award for the fundraising events she organises in her own time. Stephanie, from the Bears, has currently raised almost £3000 which has been divided between The Rainbow Child Foundation, Kent Air Ambulance, Breakthrough Breast Cancer, Lullaby and the local Carnival Association in Deal. Stephanie was selected as the Junior Face of the South East run by Face of the Globe and went on to Paris for the Grand Final in October. Just before Christmas she was awarded the Young Fundraiser of the Year, spon-sored by KM newspapers and Ward & Partners Estate Agents. Stephanie is also entering the Miss Butterfly Beauty Queen on the 15th March, which will be at the Guildhall in Sandwich and for this she will be raising funds for East Kent Headway and My Butterfly Family. Well done, Stephanie - we are really proud of you.

The monthly Parish Council Meeting took place on Monday 13th January at Kingsdown Village Hall. Councillors finalised the budget for the financial year 2014/15 and are excited about new projects that will hopefully take place in the coming year. These include improving Kingsdown Toilets to make them a more pleasant facility, introducing a 20s plenty scheme, setting up a Garden in Bloom competition and an increase in footpath maintenance. District Councillor Sue Le Chevalier was in attendance and explained she was liaising with Dover District Council in regards to the damage to the Sea Wall in Kingsdown and will keep the Parish Council informed. The Parish Council hope residents are feeling the benefit of the newly re-surfaced footpath between The Rise and Upper Street and would like to express their thanks to Pam Hough who alerted the Council to the uneven surface along the footpath. The next meeting of Ringwould with Kingsdown Parish Council takes place on Monday 10th February 2014 at The Learning Opportunities Centre, Ringwould. Following interviews to co-opt a Parish Councillor to fill a vacancy for the next fifteen months, Councillors are pleased that Mr James Murray has accepted the position. St John’s (Kingsdown) Village Hall A.G.M.
Dear Villagers, The beginning of another year is upon us and this brings new hopes, and plans, for further improvements to our Village Hall. It has been another busy time with continued maintenance and installations of new equipment. The revenue stream has improved yet again, as a result of increased usage, and further grants that have been obtained to help the projects along. The management, responsibility, and the running of the Hall, is carried out by a voluntary committee of Trustees who act on behalf of the community as a not for profit organisation, and are governed by Charity Commission Law. This Committee is formed by the nomination of one representative, from each user group and four elected Village representatives at the Annual General Meeting each year. The AGM this year is to be held on Wednesday 26th March at 7.00pm and this will be your opportunity to come along and participate in discussion, and put any questions you may have about the Hall to the Trustees. Tea and Chat in Ripple…The December Tea and Chat meeting was held in Ripple Village Hall on December 9
th. The main event of the
meeting was the now traditional ‘Celebration of Christmas’ with seasonal readings and Christmas Carols. The well attended Christmas Lunch was held in the Plough Inn on December 9
th. Our
thanks go to the Plough who again hosted the event. The first meeting of 2014 was held in the Village Hall on January 12
th. The
meeting was again persuaded to enjoy a Quiz, which was variously described as ‘easy to medium’ by the compilers or ‘totally impossible’ by Tea and Chat. We were joined at the meeting by our new PCSO, Kerry Skirrow. She can be contacted by telephone on the following number: Mobile: 07989 992 465. Kerry’s area is Ripple, Guston, Langdon, Martin and St. Margarets. The next Tea and Chat meeting will be in Ripple Village Hall on Monday, February 10

The Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Ripple….The various church services over the Christmas period were well attended, starting with the Christingle and con-cluding with the Service of Nine Lessons and Carols. During the strong winds in December, a number of tiles on the church roof were dislodged and some were broken. This damage has now been repaired. Similarly, two trees which were blown down in the churchyard have been cut up and removed.

Ripple Village Hall….At the October meeting, the Committee agreed that the cost of hiring the Hall would be increased by 20%, starting on January 1
st , 2014.

A new scale of hiring charges for Ripple Village Hall will be introduced from January 1
st 2014. The new charges, based on an increase of 20% over current
charges, are given below. The increase has been brought about by the escalating costs of running and maintaining the Hall, particularly heating, lighting and insurance. This is the first increase in Hall hiring charges since 2007. The cost of hiring the Hall will now be based on £6.00 per hour, with a minimum of 2 hours hire and calculated in whole hours.

Sutton-by-Dover Parish Council. Some comments arising from Sutton-by-Dover Parish Council Meeting.
1. At the request of the Parish Council the Tree Warden called on several houses in Sutton Parish and asked them if they would have their overhanging trees cut back so that they did not obstruct the highway. Some of the requests were carried out promptly and others are still to be dealt with. 2. Dover District Councillors at the meeting said that the new Business Park at Bettshanger was making good progress and that Hadlow College were forging ahead with their plans to move into the Bettshanger site. The Business Park at Sandwich has several small and large industries joining the park which is excellent for the local econ-omy and employment. 3. A letter from Sutton Parish was sent to DDC Planning Dept. in support of Eythorne Parish Council’s refusal to have two wind turbines erected within their Parish. Standing at 100m high the turbines would be erected at ‘Barville Farm’, Waldershare and Thornton Lane, Eastry. 3. Carolyn Clews has made some additions to the Parish website. She would love parishioners to send her any articles of interest and photos to her which she can put on the site. Anyone may submit a poem for the month which can be sent to: www.suttonbydoverpckentparishes.gov.uk 4. Trustees of the ‘John Foche and Cushire Charity’ delivered 26 Christmas food hampers to residents of the parish. This was the most hampers they had delivered in any one year and were able to do so as the charity had done well in its investments this year. 5. The residents of Ashley bought a Christmas tree and stood it on the Village Green in front of ‘The Three Horse Shoes’ old pub, between Studdal and Ashley. The tree was adorned with lights and decorations. To celebrate Christmas and the switching on of the lights residents sang Carols round the tree with a mince pie and mulled wine. What a soggy, wet Christmas we had!We were down in Devon and I thought we would either grow wings or webbed feet. But we were fortunate compared with a lot of people, with just very high winds and rain. Travelling was a different matter – it took nine hours to get back to Kent!!! Whilst down there a
relative of mine came in with a very large box and told me to share the contents with my brother in law (who is also a gardener). We had hit the jackpot! It contained bulbs! This year's (2013) left overs from a very famous grower who lives in their village. Daffodils, Narcissi, Hyacinths, Crocus, Tulips and one very lonely Amaryllis bulb which alone must have been worth a great amount. We divided them by the lucky dip method and my share has been potted up and hopefully will give a splendid show in the Spring. I am even going to take some Daffodils called 'Sir Winston Chur-chill' over to USA - guess who will be planting them. I am writing this at the end of 2013 as I have to go over the big pond for an unexpected visit, so please can I wish you all a Happy New Year for 2014. St Valentins Day
According to Folklore the romantic connotations associated with St. Valentine’s day on February 14
th appear to have begun in the 14
th Century court circles of both
England and France, to tie in, it is said, with the coupling of birds which begins to take place at around this time. Christianity appears to tell a different story of the Festival, having first been proclaimed in the year 496 by Pope Galasius, to honour the memory of at least three different Saint Valentines, all of whom were martyred; It hardly matters what the real truth behind such a glorious celebration of Love is; if you are a true romantic, that is. As the date approaches young and old alike are captivated by the thought. Many will rush out to buy their desired one the tradi-tional bunch of red roses: the universal symbol of pure love and fidelity, dating back centuries. Elegant Lilies will be on offer too, along with Orchids but what of the more seasonal, garden plants? It is the custom in Denmark to send pressed snowdrops to the one adored, which is quite a contrast really. In the language of colour white denotes purity of thoughts and actions, so it begins to make sense though. How about giving a pot of Narcissi ‘Tete-a-tete’ for a change? Translated from the French this means, “head to head,” or one to one. The colour yellow signi-fies optimism and the promise of a positive future too, which is surely very apt! Or try offering a simple bunch of sweet Violets to the one of your dreams. Viola odorata could be induced to flower a little earlier for the occasion and the colour blue signifies trustworthiness. Its common name of ‘Heartsease’ is fitting too. Commercial Red roses will always have the Wow factor but there’s no fragrance and think of the expense and the cost to the environment, too, in these straightened times! (Most are grown abroad in glasshouses and flown in). If sincerity and simple charm is what you’re after, then look to the garden instead. Lynda Synge

GLAD TIDINGS OF COMFORT AND JOY It was an unusually calm, dry December evening when a group of villagers, friends and members
of Kingsdown Conservation Group gathered for the switching on of the Christmas lights decorat-
ing the tree at the corner of Upper Street and Church Cliff. The tree had been donated by the es-
tate of the late Jennifer Peebles, and the Church kindly gave permission for it to be planted so that
everyone passing through the village could also enjoy the festive sparkle. KCG’s chairman said a
few welcoming words and then invited Jim and Marianne Stacey to turn on the lights. After an
enthusiastic round of applause, we were invited across the road to The Gate House for mulled
wine and mince-pies where, from the window, we could see the twinkling lights. It was a lovely
memento of a feisty lady who brought much comfort to so many people,. and a joyful start to the
Christmas season.
P.S. On the Saturday evening after Christmas the lights on the tree went out. Closer inspection in
daylight showed that mindless vandals had slashed through the wires in several places. The lights
are now useless. So much for “Goodwill to all men”. Mary Lord

CLIMATE CHANGE IS HAPPENING…Pat Crawford
THE HADLOW COLLEGE COMMENT AND ADVICE COLUMN. Midway through last year the government produced a document entitled ‘Future of Farming Review report’. The foreward contained an interesting phrase; ‘Fortunately as a country we have now accepted that food security is an issue’. I guess it all depends how ‘country’ is interpreted in this context. If it means people in government, then it is probably true. If it means the general public has lucid understanding of the issues involved, then it’s probably a defective analysis. The public attitude to ‘food security’ is polarised. There are those who don’t even recognise the phrase. There are those who are not interested - who might even consider it ‘rubbish’. There are those who are vaguely inter-ested but cannot see what they can do about it - and therefore see no point in worrying! Then there are those who do understand the enormity of the issues con-cerned, bend the ears of relatives, friends and colleagues, attempt to put vari-ous measures into place, support local farmers and growers, promote local food enterprises, join a grower group or set up their own kitchen garden - pos-sibly make adjustments to their eating habits. The challenges aren’t going away. The extreme weather we have already ex-perienced this year brings some of the problems into sharp focus. Flooding is an obvious issue and some crops are likely to be suffering badly. Less obvi-ous, the weather has been particularly mild. Good in respect of the fact that it has reduced household heating needs - but it is not without potential negative aspects. Some trees are in bud at the time of writing (before mid-January). Top fruit will be badly affected if trees come into blossom early and we then get severe frosts. Similar problems will affect other food production sectors. Farmers and growers are faced by huge challenges. Collectively they manage the larger part of our land; they are tasked with producing more food using fewer resources whilst at the same time paying greater attention to the envi-ronment and the importance of biodiversity – all against the background of climate change. The farming industry in this country – and globally – needs to attract new en-trants at graduate, post-graduate, skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled levels. The biggest obstacle to recruitment is the failure of schools, careers advisors, parents - and young people - to appreciate that the farming industry offers pro-gressive, fulfilling and stimulating career opportunities. Too often the industry is not understood at all – or it is perceived as unrewarding, badly paid and lacking opportunities for progression. Arguably, food security will not be achieved in this country – or globally – unless the problem of recruitment can be overcome. The issues are vast. The farming industry - and ability to manage food security - depend on attracting the right entrants, continuous training, proactivity rather than reactivity - and planning for tomorrow’s needs rather than those of yesterday! Loose Fibres The last meetings of 2013 were extra special. Firstly, we had a visit from Eve who demonstrated her work with stained glass. She brought along a piece that she was working on and while we watched, she cut a wing out of a sheet of glass. We held our breath as she tapped it and it came away perfectly. Then on to the grinder and through to the next process and finally she held up a beautiful dragon-fly. Everyone in the group could appreciate her skill and all attention was focused on her as she worked. To the delight of everyone, she produced a display of her work, all of which was for sale. A great opportunity to buy Christmas gifts - indi-vidually made and unique. We hope she can come again this year. We made this meeting a Charity Day; everyone had nominated a charity of their choice and the one pulled out of the hat was Macmillan Nurses. One of our members took the money and gift aided it so it became a bigger donation. Thanks to everyone for their participation and donations. At our very last meeting we all brought nibbles along so we had a feast at tea break, lots of laughter and chats.We've all made new friends this year and had our eyes opened to new crafts, I wonder what 2014 will bring. I'm looking forward to seeing all the Loose Fibre folk again. What have they been making while we've been apart? All will be revealed when we meet next week! Rita Rhodes

Inspired by "The Choir", I joined the Kingsdown branch of the Landmark Show Choir as
an absolute beginner when it started up at the end of October. Since then I have really enjoyed the challenging but informal practice sessions with a friendly group which wel-comes anyone who likes singing. So far there have been plenty of opportunities to sing at local fundraising and Christmas events. Although at first I thought performing live a bit daunting, we became much more focused, the whole choir gained in confidence, and it was fun! The audiences seem to have enjoyed it and the feedback has been very good. As a new choir we are keen to expand, we need more members, both men and women, and we have lots of new songs to learn, and more local events booked in. Letter from Cornwall………………..
Six or Seven Little Words.
I was taking my ease. Seated in the lounge and gazing at the sideboard
upon which rests the accumulated clutter of the years. Reminders of
places and people known long ago. A carved, wooden, upright Viking
complete with horned helmet, spear and shield and sporting a full red
beard and a blank stare and gracing the top shelf. Known to me as `Eric
the Red’ and a souvenir of a brief sojourn at Stavanger courtesy of the
Royal Norwegian Air Force. In those long gone days we took our aircraft
abroad to be handled by friendly forces, a `familiarisation’ exercise.
Another shelf and thereupon a couple of small greenstone carved
busts acquired at Simonstown. Two inches or so tall and each a reminder
of a graceful young South African woman from whom they were bought
during a visit to her country with Italian friends. And in the cupboards
flanking those shelves a collection of drinking glasses, mostly for beer (or
lager) and bought from inns and gasthofs across Europe from the Nether-
lands to the Czech Republic and Portugal to Rhodes. Scan the names with
me? Dortmunder thier pils; La Slavia bieres des gourmets; Kronenbourg;
Hannen alt grosse alt-bier-brauerei Deutschlands; Burger-& Engelbrau
biere Memmingen; Linden-pils dein Westfallentrunk. No, they don’t roll
off the tongue but how congenial it was over the years to socialise with
the locals and acquire souvenirs and memories!
So it was no trouble that Sunday lunchtime to let the mind wander
across the years. Which gave me a thirst. And so to the kitchen to put
the kettle on. I picked up a black mug (Celia would remember them)
bought some years ago from the village post office. A mysterious, magical,
mug. Add the boiling water to the teabag and that mug is transformed. A
tranquil scene of the sea with moored ferry; the panorama now in gor-
geous orange, mauve, yellow, black and blue colours. It took me back. No
passing visitor to the place this time but to our home in Kent of thirteen
years. The inscription around the base of the mug tells it all. “I’ve seen
the Sunrise at Kingsdown.” Aaah!

Prue Bell transported us to the realms of mermaids and fishermen in love, as she showed us a collection of the quilts she has designed and made to depict what she observes on her daily walks on Kingsdown beach and in Upper Street, (does a mermaid really swim in the sea, as she believes?). Her beautiful designs are sometimes almost spiritual in content, sometimes quirky, but always an expression of her imaginative personality. We had almost a full house for our first meeting of the New Year. We have some interesting events to look forward to. John Craven will be the speaker at the Annual Meeting in Folkestone in March; a knitting group is planned; the weekly walking group and the canasta group, continue to grow. Further ahead, there will be a visit to Cats at the Marlowe in June, and a coach to the Kent Show in July. We have a lot of fun together in our WI, sometimes members are persuaded to make a fool of themselves, as the picture on this page shows! You too could be sharing our fun!
