PUBLIC LIBRARYLocation: lower Manhattan, Chinatown

Instructor: Ron DiDonnoYear: 2015

This project locates at lower Manhattan Chinatown area, where is often described as the old urban fabric of the city. The site sits in a 75'*75' area between Grand street and Chrystie street, with three long stripes of park on its east side. Few ball game courts in the park along with a number of vegetable and seafood markets together create a lively chaotic environment in this neighborhood.

The library intends to function as an extension of its neighboring environment and Chinatown’s culture background. At the same time, the building tries to mark a clear difference with its chaotic surrounding by creating a modern and clean vibe. The ramp design allows a clearly expressed circulation. The dynamic “hills” of the auditorium roof functions as a lively playground at the bottom of the atrium, extending the casual park environment into the building.

This building has 4 layers of solar control, which l imits the sunlight during morning and noon, as well as enhancing the sunlight during afternoon. To save energy and material for a green building, the steel frame structure in this library becomes a part the furniture.

MATERIAL

FACADEDETAIL

O n e d i s t i n c t m a t e t i a l p a t t e n o f Chinatown area is the use of red bricks.

For the two conjunct ional wal l w ith neighbor ing bui ldings, I chose white brick as an extension of the texture; at the same time creating a much lighter and clearer feeling.

For the lobby level on the park s ide, clear glass functions as an extension of the casual v ibe, br inging in park environment to the center of the atrium, which is the "playground" of the library.

TOWNHOUSE PROJECTclinton hill neighborhood, Brooklyn

Instructor: Florencia Vetcheryear: 2014-2015

The s ite of this project locates at Cl inton Hi l l , a beautiful Brooklyn neighborhood with many historic brownstone townhouses. The design goal is to create a living space for two, which allow certain body motions to happen.

First I analyzed and abstracted the body movements of my two dwellers. Then I created a series of abstracted drawings, and lifted/extruded points, lines, and shapes from the drawing to create space that is suitable for the dwellers. Finally, a carefully designed townhouse space for my two characters – an active young girl and a tranquil old man – was created from a hybrid of two design approaches. The dynamic upper floor allows activities such as climbing and jumping for the young lady, and the flat, tall, and cool space on the ground floor is designated for the old man. The two can dwell in this townhouse with minimal interactions, allowing a peaceful co-living condition for two opposite characters.

FUTURE PRIMITEVE HOUSE RECONSTRUCTION

UnbuiltInstructor: Michael Szivos

Year: 2015

Sou Fujimoto's future primitive h o u s e i s a n e x p e r i m e nta l p ro ject composed of s labs layered at 350mm intervals. Successions of such different leve l s c reates a va r iet y of places. F i rst saw this project, it i s so abstract that the only thing I could think of are grids. Vertical and horizontal l ines make up squares, completely regardless of actual ci rcumstance l ike topography. T h e i d e a o f g r i d s re m i n d s me of Super Studio’s project: the Cont inuous Monument. They exper imented with the extremity of grids by bringing gr ids al l over the ear th and Ca r r y o n w i th th e i d ea of grids, I try to use vertical and horizontal lines to cut the future primitive house in my analysis. Th i s i s a back ward process - from finished to in process, f rom a whole to segments, from organized to chaos. By studying and reconstructing the segments, a whole new world of possibilities is waiting.

RENDERING + POSTER DESIGN

The goal of this class project is to 3D modeling and rendering a commercial product, and designing three posters for it. The object I chose is a nail polish from Wet n Wild, a young cosmetic brand from California.

In the poster design process, I worked as both the model and the stylist, as well as the image processor and the graphic designer. Depending on the color of nail polish I aimed at two types of desire. The first one is the classic seductive “wet and wild” image, and the second one aims at younger generation, creating a “jiggy” and hip vibe.

RECYCLED FURNITURE

Girls are always running out of space for their clothes. After filling up the entire walk in closet, I decided to make a new hanging closet. The design propose of the closet is not only a stand to hang clothes, but also a new visual check point of the room. The top shelf is a place for plant pot and architecture model archive. The upper pipe is designed for hat hanging, and the lower is for clothes. The very bottom box is designed for shoes as well as vinyl albums display.

In the manufacturing process we tried realize our idea of "recycled furniture". My partner and I sought for discarded material from garbage place all around the city. We recycled wood and pipes, and reassembled them to bring old material to l ife. Even the hat hook is made from discarded chipboard found in school studio's garbage can. We laser cut leftover chipboard, repaint them and made them beautiful and strong hat hooks. We proved that furniture design can be done in a extremely eco-friendly and low budget way.
