The preliminary elections passed and we have all seen the results. Again,Lawrence's voters have faced Mayor Daniel Rivera and former Mayor William Lantigua.

As we all know, by his own decision after losing his chair, former Mayor Lantigua retiredtohisnativeDominicanRepublicwiththeintentionofgivingspacetothenewmayortocarryouthisadministration.Lantiguahassaiditmanytimes;wearenottheonessayingit. AlthoughabsentfromLawrence,Lantiguaalwayskeptintouchwithmembersofhis base who informed him about the achievements as well as the follies of the current administration,andurgedhimtoreturn. While locally the attacks on him continued, whether he had stolen millions and thathewaslivinginaluxuriousvilla intheDominicanRepublic. Twoofhisbestfriendswhovisitedhimmorethanonceverifiedtherealityofit.Onthecontrary,hewaslivingveryhumbly. Meanwhile,ayoungman,astrangerintheLawrencepoliticalarena,verycloseto the Lantigua administration, launched his candidacy under the motto "We Want aChange".Littlebylittle,hischaracter,hismannerofspeakingwithoutstirringasheansweredcaptiousquestions,whichperhapsirritatedothercandidates,hehadtheabilitytoelaborateonthesubjectwithoutansweringit,andallverypassively. In addition to Jorge Jaime, the author of "We Want a Change", Mayor Rivera, ModestoMaldonadoandWilliamGreenwerealreadypromotingtheircandidacies. Finally, Lantigua arrived, only to find that his closest friends, those who hadalwaysworkedinhispreviouscampaignswerealreadycommittedtoothers.Everyonetoldhim,“Youcametoolate;youdonothaveachance.” Apparently,thiswarningwasthespurthatLantiguaneeded.Hefoundhimselfalone with no money starting a race against a candidate who had already raised approximately $200,000 in his re-election and a city divided among 8 candidates.Fromtheoutset,whenannouncinghiscandidacyhesaidthathewasrunningforfirstor secondplace and if hedidnotmake it, hewouldhelp anyof the candidates tooverthrowRivera.Quitearrogant,ashewascalledbymany. Well,heaccomplishedwhatonlyhebelieved!Hestillhasanothermajorbattle:thefinalelection.HehasreceivedtheendorsementofModestoMaldonadoandmostofhisfollowersaswellasWilliamGreen. Andover Public Schools Raise Nearly $22,000 by Uniting in Support of Hurricane-Ravaged Communities

Students showcasetheir work in supportof those affected by the hurricanes.

Superintendent Sheldon Berman ispleasedtoannouncethatstudents,familiesand staff of theAndover Public Schoolscametogetheroverthepastweektosupportthe people whose lives were severelyimpactedbyrecenthurricanesthatravagedsoutheasternTexasandFlorida. On Wednesday, Sept. 20, Andover’sstudents and faculty came together for Andover Responds: A United Day ofSupport.StudentsworetheirschoolcolorsandbroughthandwrittennotesandphotostohelpupliftthespiritsofpeopleimpactedbyHurricanesHarvey,Irma,andMaria. Staff members and families fromthe throughout community were asked to make whatever monetary contribution theycould inorder tohelp thoseaffectedby the storms. Donations are continuingto come in to the American Red Cross and its ongoing efforts to help the impactedcommunities rebuild in the wake of the storms. To date, the efforts have raised$21,655. “Our core values call on us to teach our students to feel connected, think globally, believe in their ability to make a difference intheworldandtakeprideinbeingpartofAndoverPublicSchools,”SuperintendentBermansaid.“We’veallbeentouchedbythe images of the devastation left by these hurricanes,andit’sessentialthatwefulfillourobligationtodowhatwecantoprovideahelpinghandintheirtimeofneed.” Students atWest Elementary Schoolwrotelettersanddrewpicturesforfamiliesliving in shelters, while one students wrappedupafavoriteshellofhers,alongwithawishforhappiness,tosendtothosein need. Several students at High PlainElementary brought in donations or had theirfamiliesdonateonline.

To mention just a few examples ofcaring:

• Somestudentsusedtheirclasswritingtime to pen notes of encouragement tohurricanevictims.• Teachers ledOpenCirclemeetings todiscusswaystohelpthestrugglingfamilies.• Students sent cards with their ownheartfelt messages, such as, "I am so sorry that you had to endure such a horrible act of nature.Noonedeservesthat."• People dropped spare change into acollectionbucketatOpenHouse.• Principalsusedmorningannouncementstokeeptheaffectedfamiliesintheforefrontofeveryone'sthoughts.• Studentsmadevideosandcardsduringflex time. Some of the messages werewritten in Spanish in an effort to bringcomforttoSpanish-speakingpopulationsinthedisasterareas.• Other students drew original picturesand wrote letters to families living in shelters.Afewexamplesappearbelow.Thestudents’drawingsandnotes,alongwitha collective check with the community’sdonations, will soon be mailed to the communities in need as a way of showing them that they are not alone as they set out ontheroadtorecovery. The City of Lawrence lost a greatfriend and advocate. Marilda “Marie”Gosselin, a lifelong Lawrencian, deeplyloved the city and constantly worked to improveitsqualityoflife. Marie served the City of Lawrence as the District F (South Lawrence East)Councilorfortenyears.ShetransformedDistrict F intoDistrict F(abulos)! MariewastheguestontheHotLineTalkRadioShowmanyyearsago,anditshost,RonnieFord announced, “We have the councilor fromDistrictFabuloushere!”ButMarie’sinterests and concerns were not limited to her district. Marie cared about everydistrictinLawrence. Mariewasanoutspokenandeffectivecity councilor who was not hesitant to go against the tide. Marie participatedin many patriotic events and was easilyrecognized in her colorful red, white and blue sweater. Marie supported theveteransandworkedwithEdward“Eddie”Anderson and former Lawrence Mayor Michael Sullivan for the restoration ofthe Veterans Memorial Stadium and hada long history of extensive involvement in civicandcityaffairs. She served on many boards andcommittees and was an effective team member. She and her lifelong friend,Eileen O’Callaghan, organized manywonderful public events, two of whichwere the St. Patrick’s Day Parade andthe Santa Parade. Spectators at the St.Patrick’sDayParadewatcheddelightedlyas the beautiful Clydesdale horses trotted alongEssexStreet and enjoyed the clap-clap-clapping sounds of their hooves.Spectatorseagerlyawaitedtheviewofthepairofllamas–onewhiteandonebrown– thatMariebrought fromHarmonyHillFarmsinGroveland,MA. Marie invitedRexTrailer, thestarofthe popular television program “BoomTown,” to participate in the 2001 SantaParade. Spectators cheered and clappedexcitedly ashe traveled along theparaderoute. Marie performedwith theActingOut Theater Group, who presented acomedy“Lafferty’sWake,”inwhichMarieplayed the role of the humorous “SisterMarie.”Theaudience,whichincludedthisletterwriter,laugheduproariously.Mariesupportedmyfouryearsofeffortstobegina “Project Senior” program in Lawrence

Marie was a St. Mary High Schoolgirl, but it made no difference to her if a girlwas a LawrenceHigh School girl.Marie was an excellent golfer, and her scores were always above par. But toher,everyonewasonanequalpar.Mariewas the first “LadyAgent” at Met LifeInsurance, where she was employed forforty years. However, she never let heremployment longevity define her. Sheworkednotonlyforheremployerforfortyyears, but also for the citizens of the City ofLawrenceforfortyyears! HavingbeenraisedintheEssexStreetProjects, proved that one who is raisedin projects can become a responsible,successful citizen. “Shemade the city abetter place,” former Lawrence MayorMichaelSullivanrightlysaidaboutMarie,whose campaign slogan was, “Workinghardforyou.” We will always remember Marilda “Marie” Gosselin. And the best way torememberheristoworkhardtokeeptheCityofLawrenceabetterplace.

Community Day Charter Schoolthis week received $29,814 as part ofover $300,000 in awards announcedby the Department of Elementary andSecondary Education for 21st CenturyCommunity Learning Centers (CCLCs) to more effectively include students on IndividualizedEducationPlans(IEPs)intoexistingprograms. “Students with disabilities want tosocialize, learn,andtakepart inactivitiesthe same way that the their other classmates do,” said State SenatorBarbaraL’Italien.“We don’t want those children to slipthroughthecracks.Thisimportantfundingwill help special education students inLawrence achieve academically and experiencesocializationfromanearlyagethat is so critical to a child’s intellectualandemotionaldevelopment.”

City’s Civil Engineer Thisistorefreshyourmemory. Not too long after Dan Rivera became mayor,hefiredtheAssistantCityEngineerAndrew Wall because he had not been able to pass the examination for his state civilengineerlicense. Mr.Wall hadworked for the city for17 years, covered by the City EngineerSantoNicolosi’slicensewhichwasalegalpracticewhilehetriedtogethisown.Mr.Nicolosi retired, Mr. Wall was fired andthe city was left without a functional civil engineer. Then, the mayor decided to appointhis office clerk Theodoro Rosario, anagronomist with no knowledge of the city’sintimatedetailsasMr.Wallacquiredthroughtheyears. LastFebruary,aqualifiedcivilengineerwashired,MilagrosPuello,althoughtherewas a glitch on the night that she was confirmedbythecitycouncil.Thatnight,itwas learned that she did not have a license, either.CouncilorJeovannyRodriguezwasvery convincing explaining that it was amatter of presenting her New Hampshirelicense to the Massachusetts authorities, in ordertogetone. She was approved with a salary of$80,000 and a $15,000 a year stipend tocompensate the previous employer who

paidforhereducationandtowhichshewascommitted towork foracertainperiodoftime. Sevenmonthshavepassedandstill,noMassachusettslicense. We lost someone with 17 years ofexperiencewhoknewthecitylikethepalmofhishandandweareinworseshapenow.

Workplace English Classes Forming at the Merrimack Valley

Immigrant & Education Center Registrations are now being taken for Workplace English classes at the Merrimack Valley Immigrant & Education Center (the former Asian Center), 439 S. Union Street, building 2, Level B, Lawrence, MA 01843. These classes are free to Lawrence residents but students must have a high beginner level of English.
