Haig Sare was planning to spend the winter months driving a truck and attending Bible College, but when Warringah coach Sam Harris went to Japan, the former Western Force back who had a stint in France with Biarritz was given the job. To the delight of the Rats, who now share fourth place, he has followed up one-point losses to Norths and Southern Districts with a 23-18 disposal of Sydney university and a last gasp win over Randwick. Sare says, “Coaching is much more stressful than playing. You can feel so vulnerable because you have no control over what happens.” He made the big call of taking the Warringah captaincy from Josh Holmes and giving it to Josh’s older brother Luke before the university game. “An older head,” explains Haig, who recalls how the old French legend Serge Blanco would take the whole Biarritz team to dinner after a win or interrupt the coach at half-time to tell the players what they should be doing.

Remember Gavin Di Bartolo, once a dashing fullback for the Easts Beasties who headed to America where he made eight appearances in the national team of the united States? Today he joins the old Wallaby prop Matt Dunning playing in the Subbies for Balmain. In recent years Balmain have induced Wallabies Matt Giteau, Drew Mitchell, Ryan Cross and the famed French international forward Sebastien Chabal to play for the club.

The Canterbury Bulldogs are willing to dig deep to snare Israel Folau but let’s hope he will stay with the Waratahs.

Visitors to Woollahra have marvelled at how the big downstairs room of the Easts clubhouse now looks like a rugby club instead of a big, empty barn. It is like a magician walked in, waved his wand and the walls suddenly were filled with pictures of more than 100 old champions back to

Dally Messenger, lists of Wallabies who have played for the Beasties and other memorabilia. Take a bow, Mark Bakewell. As well as coaching Easts, he has raised $11,000 through raffles to hire a carpenter to get the job done. “I wanted to bring the club feel back,” says Mark.

Alan Jones took the first step to becoming Wallaby coach when he won a premiership with Manly in 1983. On June 15, the Marlins will celebrate the 30th anniversary of that triumph when Jones hosts a lunch for the Steve Williams-led team at the Pacific Hotel as an aperitif to the game against Sydney university at Manly Oval.

Remember Flip Van Der Westhuizen, the South African who arrived here with a surfboard under his arm and never went home, staying to become one of Australia’s top referees? Delightful chap, Flip, who heads to the Maldives on a surfing trip each year. Now his son Paul is coming through the Colts as a referee.

The people who run rugby got it right when they elected Robin Timmins as the first woman to be a Life Member of the NSW Rugby union. Without chirpy Robin to run their affairs, as she has for more than 40 years, the referees would struggle. Eastwood rarely take the field without one of their most passionate supporters sitting in the stand.

In a rare achievement, Henry Mikkelsen has completed 50 appearances in Colts for Northern Suburbs. Playing No 8, he joined the club as a 16 year old in 2010. Can anyone top this?

West Harbour coach Matt Briggs says he wouldn’t swap Cohen Masson for any open-side flanker in the Shute Shield. “He’s the best No 7 in the competition,” claims Matt. “Against Gordon he had 24 individual tackles and six pilfers.” New zealander Masson played for Waikato in Sevens and lists martial arts among his hobbies.

To celebrate Sydney university’s 150th year celebrations, the Students will play a World universities Barbarians team as the curtain raiser to the third Test against the British and Irish Lions at Homebush on July 6.

The challenge for Parramatta in 2013 is to back-up the ground breaking success they achieved in 2012. having

reached their first finals series since 1991, the desire for further progress is strong throughout the club but

consolidation of their new found status as a serious player in the Shute Shield competition is paramount.

To assist with that challenge, coach Glen Christini brought in some new blood in the off-season and

in Dan Rawaqa, he’s not only added someone with experience and an international pedigree, he’s raised

the Two Blues X-factor to a whole new level.

“He’s just a freakish talent,” enthuses Christini. “He’s got X-factor, the skill set is

fantastic and he’s a great footballer.”

having represented Fiji at both test and Sevens levels, Rawaqa – or Ratu Maravunawasawasa to give him his

full title!–spent the last two seasons in France

but couldn’t settle. his uncle just happens to live across

the road from Merrylands RSl Oval and the rest is history.

“I didn’t know anything about the club until I played against

Southern Districts in a trial match,” Rawaqa explains. “Even though we lost, I knew this team

would be a team to beat if we worked together. I enjoy Parra’s running game and with so many brothers from the Pacific Islands here, it’s just like playing at home.”

After five rounds, he’s racked up 54pts and three tries and has been a highlight in an already intriguing

Shute Shield season. his footwork, sleight of hand and offload ability opens up extra points of attack for Parra and they’ve also benefited

from his relaxed approach to the game. it’s those qualities that Christini feels will be

pivotal when push comes to shove.

“He brings that experience and calmness and he gives us options outside and inside,”

he says. “Definitely in those big games, guys like that will bring us home.”

A policeman by day back in Fiji, don’t expect to see Rawaqa padding the beat around

Sydney anytime soon. “I don’t like guns,” he explains. “We don’t carry guns in Fiji!”

I’ve been asked my advice on selections more than enough, but this latest one really took the cake.I was honoured to join the distinguished selection panel which would choose the first four inductees of Inside Rugby Invincibles. The result of the secret ballot will be announced at a gala function in Sydney on 12 June.Might I say the other judges themselves have shaped Australia’s rugby history. At our lovely waterside luncheon last week I had Andrew Slack on one side; Greg Clark on the other. Around the table were Sir Nicholas Shehadie, Max Howell, Bob Dwyer, Alan Jones, Greg Growden, Peter FitzSimons and Norman Tasker among other rugby luminaries.Beforehand I was very conscious of the fact that even someone as old as me might not have seen the early postwar Wallabies and so we all needed to listen intently to what the oldies had to say. Sir Nicholas and Dr Howell both went on the 1947-48 Wallabies tour to Britain, so they filled us in on players of their era. Then your writer spoke of those who played through the sixties and seventies.

I have always nominated Ken Catchpole as the greatest scrumhalf I’ve seen and to convince others I recalled the 1966-67 tour of the British Isles, France & Canada which I was fortunate to cover.Wherever we went in the Four Home unions they kept asking about this Catchpole and saying how much they had heard of him. Inevitably after watching him play the response was “well, he’s every bit as good as you made out….”Add to this the fact that he’s the only player I’ve heard praised as lavishly by the opposition as he was by teammates and you’ll understand all the adulation. Hopefully the other judges took note. The judges were given a list of some 70 names and I won’t detail any more because it would only confuse you further. But allow me to say that whoever you feel are Australia’s four greatest players, they were on that list. After a three-hour discussion we had to vote for our best four in order. As the judges discussed various players it was interesting listening to their comments on some, all of whom this writer held in great esteem. But having entered the meeting with four players in mind, I must say I changed my opinion because of what was said. And I don’t think I was alone.Of course, I won’t divulge any names, but there could be a surprise or two when the four Invincibles are read out on 12 June.

If you are a Warringah supporter with a weak ticker, stock up on the heart pills. Three of their first five games in the Shute Shield have been decided by a single point. If the one-point losses to Northern Suburbs and Southern Districts had gone the other way, the Rats, under rookie coach Haig Sare, would be sharing the lead with Eastwood. Today the troops in Warringah’s green and white head to Manly Oval to take on arch rivals Manly in a local derby which traditionally is marked by blood and thunder. The ABC TV cameras will be there.

Rugby tragics should be drooling. Apart from Manly v Warringah, we have Sydney university v Northern Suburbs under lights at university Oval on Friday night and the next day big improvers Parramatta are at home to Eastwood at Merrylands RSL Rugby Park. Three marvellous games.

Five rounds into the Shute Shield, the competition is most intriguing. Eastwood, chasing their fifth straight win after a first round loss to Southern Districts, and unbeaten Souths sit on top with 21 points, two to the good of Northern Suburbs. Next with 15 are Manly and Warringah, with Parramatta a point further back.

MANLY v WARRINGAHAt Manly Oval

Manly were dismayed when their skipper Ed Gower was suspended for six weeks as a follow up from a clash a fortnight ago with Eastwood prop Marty Plokstys which forced the latter from the field in a concussed state. Ryan Melrose comes into the second-row in the only change for Manly, who have shrugged off two heavy losses to dispose of Eastern Suburbs 39-20.

Dave Harvey, who came off the reserve bench to kick a stupendous match-winning drop goal from 48 metres out two minutes after the full-time bell to give Warringah a 25-24 victory in a heart-stopper at Rat Park, will start in this local derby which traditionally is no place for the faint-hearted. An Achilles tendon problem made him a dropout after Thursday training, but when his ankle showed improvement he volunteered to be on the bench.

Apart from Harvey starting, the Warringah team is unchanged. Coach Haig Sare says: “Our goal is that no team will get over the top of us this season.”

Tip: Warringah

SYDNEY UNIvERSITY v NORTHERN SUBURBSAt University Oval

Sydney university are boosted by the return of Jeremy Tilse and Tim Davidson up front and Tom Carter and Michael Hodge in the centre for what promises to be a hard fought battle under the lights at university Oval. Norths are coming off their first loss, so they’ll be stung to avoid another reversal. In an interesting switch, university have picked flyhalf Jock Merriman at halfback but say the talented youngster has had experience playing No 9. And they’ll be boosted by the return of hooker Tolu Latu from Australian under 20 duties.

It is a game that will be won and lost up front,

which is where experienced warriors in Davidson and Tilse are backed by such players as Liam Winton and last year’s grand final hero David Hickey. Tom Carter and Nathan Trist will hold the youngsters together in the backs.

On Norths’ first loss of the season, a 22-17 defeat at the hands of Southern Districts, coach Scott Fava says: “We didn’t have the firepower to break their line.” Minimal changes, with Australian under 20 player Pat Sio returning to the back-row. Fava keeps an array of statistics, as many as 20 at times, to evaluate the contribution of each player, with centre Bill Meakes and No 6 Ben Matwijow figuring prominently.

PARRAMATTA v EASTWOODAt Merrylands rSL rugby Park

Plenty of Eastwood changes for what should be a crackerjack clash with Parramatta at the beautifully groomed Merrylands RSL Rugby Park. Back-rower Locky McCaffrey and halfback Mick Snowden are back from the Western Force, prop Marty Plokstys returning after taking a heavy hit against Manly and Tom Hill is a new face in the centre. With skipper Andrew Cox and fullback Tom Woods still among the walking wounded, Parramatta are unchanged as a follow up to their 23-17 eclipse of Gordon.

Eastwood coach John Manenti has the highest respect for Parramatta. “We follow them in the draw, so I see them all the time on video. They’re getting better week by week. With their lineout and scrum improving all the time. Their new No 10 (Dan Rawaqa, a Fijian international) brings a lot of direction as well as an X-factor.” Despite only having a played a handful of games, Rawaqa’s haul of 54 points puts him level with Corey Brown, of Norths, and Rohan Saifoloi, of Southern Districts, at the top of scorers. Parramatta coach Glen Christini has a special word for the contribution of his second-rowers Charlie Leaeno and Adam Coleman.

Tip: Eastwood

SOUTHERN DISTRICTS v GORDONAt Forshaw rugby Park

Two changes to unbeaten Souths in their home game at Forshaw Park, with Rayhan Laulala taking over at fullback from Paul Asquith. who has injured his ankle, and Steve Fualau, a New zealander from Canterbury, replacing Andrew Sulter at hooker. Gordon are much improved after a 23-17 loss to Parramatta (they led 12-0 and 17-10 at half-time) and owe much to the return of Mark Preston after an absence of a couple of seasons. He has worked his way up the grades and will be an important figure today.

“The boys were flat, mentally jaded,” said Easts coach Mark Bakewell after the Beasties had tumbled to a 39-20 loss to Manly as a follow up to wins over Sydney university and Randwick.

No panic, though, with the only change being Angus Sinclair for injured Tom Azar in the centre. Wests are coming off a defeat, too, a 62-29 loss to in-form Eastwood but when they’re hot, they’re hot.

RANDWICK v PENRITHAt Coogee Oval

Like a big game fisherman about to bring a catch into the boat when he slips of the hook, Randwick had Warringah on the hook at Pittwater Rugby Park until Dave Harvey potted a last gasp field goal from 48 metres to give victory to the Rats by 25-24.

“They’re getting close,” said coach Wade Kelly. His only change is Geoff Ingram coming into the second-row. Playing at home, victory over winless Penrith is crucial if Randwick are to stay in touch with the main bunch.

In the sun-toasted, sybaritic society of Manly, colourful characters are the norm, but few can compare with Barry “Tizza” Taylor, who has left us at the age of 77. Apart from coaching NSW and the Australian under 21s in rugby, he won national surf titles with the Manly club. On top of these achievements, he was Australia’s first globe-trotting rugby coach. In 1986, Tizza was in charge when Western Samoa entered international rugby against Wales in Apia and then headed to Wales and Ireland for further Tests. He was “Technical Advisor” as the rules decreed that only a man of Polynesian descent could be national coach. This was followed with stints in Japan, West Hartlepool in England and uruguay.Tizza was never a man to sugarcoat his opinions. They still talk about his explosive half-time address delivered in a first grade Colts grand final to a Manly team that included five future Wallabies in Phillip and Mitchell Cox, Bill Calcraft, James Black and Rod Crerar. They were trailing 3-19 but went on to win.“Yes, Barry could be volatile, but the boys loved him,” reflected Enid, his wife for more than fifty years. “He helped so many people.” In Manly, he was a folk hero.In the summer months, Taylor would compete in the

surf for the Manly club, for whom he won Australian titles in R and R and teams events, while in the winter he turned out for the Manly Marlins, playing 235 games as a fearless first grade flanker.Tizza was different. Some days he would walk to work in the city from his home at Balgowlah Heights, while son Steve recalls he refused to use a speargun when he went fishing underwater, using old fashioned gear to give the fish a chance to escape. He is survived by Enid, Steve and daughter Jennifer.

Round 6 of the W McMahon Colts competition features a mouth watering top 4 clash on Friday night between the undefeated Sydney university and a Norths side that boasts just one loss this season. Norths will be looking towards their sturdy halfback and fly-half combination to glue their team together and distribute some ball to their pace out wide. The students will surely be looking towards their powerhouse centre pairing of Jim Stewart and Chris Ingate for breaks in the Norths defence. This match at university Oval Number 1 is a Shute Shield curtain raiser in what should be a very exciting experience for all those involved. Also playing a curtain raiser this weekend are Warringah and Manly at Manly Oval. My pick of the round however is Eastwood V Parramatta. After difficult early season schedules, both teams are now coming off back-to-back wins and will be raring to go today out north-west at TG Millner field.

PArrAMATTA 25 V GOrDON 17The Two Blues started the match running into a strong southerly breeze that was felt throughout round 5 of the Shute Shield and Colts competitions. Some tight, controlled and aggressive ruck play from the Two Blues helped fullback Justin Paulo scoot down the field untouched to score under the sticks and forge a 13-3 lead with a few minutes to go before the half-time whistle. A lapse in concentration from Parramatta saw Gordon run in a try right on oranges to bring the score to 13-10.The breeze seemed to provide the Parramatta side with a giant energy boost after having faded off just before the break, as Justin Paulo followed his two first half tries with a third early in the second half. The strong Gordon set piece has become the backbone of their side this season and it kept them with much needed possession running into the strong second half wind. After muscling their way up field, Gordon leapt over a ruck to tighten up the score line to 25-17 with five minutes to go. This made for a tense final

few minutes as the Highlanders enjoyed good territory and possession thanks to some late penalties but were kept out throughout thanks to the tenacious Two Blues backline defence.

MANLy 40 V EASTS 27This match started with heavy hits and much attempted counter rucking as both sides fought hard for early territory. A late tackle in the third minute left Manly having to endure the difficult task of finding a replacement for their stand-in fly-half.The always impressive work rate of the Easts back row helped the score remain close all match, with there being 6 points in it with a couple of minutes to spare before a Manly counter attack and energetic kick chase pushed out the score line.

WEST HArBOUr 17 V EASTWOOD 36Eastwood continued their winning ways following their dramatic one point victory over Manly the week before with a clinical performance away at Concord Oval against the Pirates.

Centre Bryce Steel, a 1sts Colts debutant picked up a double for the day, displaying excellent finishing skills reminiscent of a young Ben Tune.

Woodies captain, flanker Hamish Hall was tireless in his work effort as always and picked up the man of the match honours thanks to his inspiring defence and work over the ball.

rANDWICk 57 V WArrINGAH 8Randwick continued with their flawless start to the season, beating Warringah to make their season record 5 straight bonus point wins from as many matches. The Galloping Greens started the match with a strong breeze behind them at Coogee Oval and pinned the Rats in their own half for the first quarter of the match.Keeping the match scoreless and the Rats away from their own tryline for nearly 20 straight minutes was the educated boot of Warringah outside centre Louis Anderson. Louis also showed what a rock hard stomach he must have when he set up a small break down the

sideline just one phase after having been crushed in the ribs by a smashing tackle.Wicks fly-half Andrew Norton helped to organise his larger forwards with huge runs up the midfield throughout the opening half of the first-half. The pressure finally ticked over for the Rats as loosehead prop Paris Cockinos penetrated the Warringah line to score the first points of the match. The scorer was kept busy thanks to Randwick blindside flanker David Vea who kept Warringah on the backfoot for the remainder of the match and laid the platform for many more Randwick chances that half.

Warringah fought well to have the score at 17-3 at half-time but a few worn faces showed the southerly breeze had taken its toll. The class of the Randwick backline was never more evident than during their second half counter attacks. Year 11 student James Norrish showed why he’s renowned as the hitman of Warringah colts with some bone-jarring tackles and together with Peter Barrett had a sense of mongrel throughout the match. However, sheer mongrel alone is not enough to contain the expansive and slick competition leading Randwick Colts side.

The June long weekend heralds the start of one of the largest Junior Club Rugby tournaments in the country. The New South Wales Junior Rugby union State Championships involves players from the ages of 11 to 17 years old and commences on Saturday 8th June at 6 different venues. Over 2,500 players will compete over the long weekend with a further 350 under 10s players competing in a one day tournament in late June. Teams from across the State and also invited guests from interstate descend on Sydney, Camden and Orange to participate. The format, which aims to maximise the amount of game time over the weekend has changed slightly as a consequence of a review conducted in 2012. The Finals for the 11s to 13s age groups will now be conducted at the venues hosting the pool games whereas the Finals for the 14s to 17s will be held at T G Millner on the Monday.

Venues for the nsWJru state Championships

The NSWJRu State Championships are an important component of the Representative pathway for all Junior Rugby players. SJRu selects teams from the 14s-17s age groups at the State Championships and Regionals tournament (held in late June) which then compete against their Country counterparts at the Annual City V Country Day to be held at Forshaw Rugby Park on July 28th. From

this tournament NSWJRu selects under 15s and under 17s teams to compete against ACTJRu and QldJRu with the 17s also competing at the Australian Junior Rugby union National tournament to be held over the October long weekend in Canberra. The Sydney 16s and the Country 16s teams enter the prestigious ARu 16s Nationals held in the September holidays at Riverview College. All eligible Club players in both the Country and Sydney regions are able to participate in the Representative program which is the pinnacle of Junior Club Rugby.NSWJRu is the largest community Rugby group in NSW and is the oldest and largest Junior union in the nation. The Sydney Districts and Country zones are its members and NSWJRu is affiliated with both the AJRu and the NSWRu. In 2013 there are just over 20,000 registered Junior club players in NSW from the age of 6 years upwards. Competitions are conducted by Sydney Junior Rugby union and Country Junior Rugby union in all 4 corners of the State. unfortunately there has been a decrease in Junior registrations in the age groups 10s through to 18s and all Districts and zones are actively working to reverse this trend. The support of both NSWRu and the ARu via Community Rugby is integral to this reversal. The participation of Juniors in Club Rugby in Australia will eventually ensure the success of the State and National teams and the well being of all affiliates...the importance of Grassroots Rugby can never be underestimated.

The clash between Easts and Manly at Woollahra last weekend saw long-serving club rugby referee Nathan Pearce celebrate controlling his 100th 1st Grade (Shute Shield) game. After playing rugby for Tudor House, Scots Bathurst and Knox College, a couple of broken legs saw Nathan pick up the whistle in the Central West in 1995. He then started refereeing for NSW Rugby Referees in 1998 in Suburban

rugby, and rose through the ranks, with his first Shute Shield game being Parramatta v Eastwood in 2004.Pearcey has become a regular at Shute Shield games, and a close friend to the 200km of the Great Western Highway between Bathurst and Sydney which he travels each weekend to referee. He made his Super Rugby debut in 2008 (Force vs Brumbies), refereeing 9 Super Rugby games overall, and became a Test Match Referee in 2010, refereeing two Tests in the 2009 IRB Pacific Nations Cup.Nathan, who was given the nickname "Scott Styris" by Nz commentators due to an uncanny likeness to the Kiwi cricketing all-rounder, considers his career highlights to include an ARC game in 2007 between the Central Coast Rays and Sydney Fleet in which Peter Hewat ran riot, running out onto Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein to referee the Cheetahs v Sharks, and his first Test match, Tonga v Fiji in Nuku’alofa. He now divides his weekends between Sydney and the Central West. Congratulations on his century!

if genes count for anything, Benn Melrose was born to pull on a rugby jumper. Dad Brian played for the Waratahs before becoming a top coach, uncle Tony

was a Wallaby who won State of Origin honours in rugby league and another uncle Gregg “Tiny”

Melrose played in the second-row for the Waratahs.

But none of them came close to matching 20 year old Benn’s score of 99 in the hSC, which won him a scholarship to Sydney university where

he is in the third year of majoring in finance commercial law and investment banking.

he has already played for the Australian under 20s. Benn is a back-rower, stands

6ft 3ins and tips the scales at 96 kilos. Those who know say Waratah and possibly

Wallaby jumpers are not beyond him.

“People say i have the bloodlines for rugby,” says this exceptional young man. “At three

and a half i was running up and down the sideline as a ball-boy for eastwood.”

Melrose, who won a scholarship to The King’s School, adds: “My grandfather was a police

officer and taught me you never get anything for nothing. So i work hard. i’m 100 per cent passionate about my rugby and my studies.”

learning the importance of the right food from dad Brian, who eats his museli with water, Benn follows a diet laden with lots of protein aimed at putting on

muscle instead of fat. Breakfast: six eggs, wholemeal toast, museli. Mid-morning: tuna, protein shake,

maybe a banana. lunch: steak or chicken, potato and broccoli. Pre-training: tuna, chicken or turkey,

museli bars. Post-training: protein shake, tuna, museli bars. Dinner: chicken or steak, vegetables.

“i’ve taken to having a few beers after footy, though, particularly if we’ve had a

win for university,” Benn admits.

his favourite players? All Black captain Richie McCaw (“a great leader of winning

teams”) and Wallaby flanker George Smith (“for the same reasons”).

Benn lives at St Paul’s College but heads home several nights a week to spend time with his

family. And ladies: he’s currently unattached.

WILSO’S WHISPERSby Bob Wilson

Back in June, 1989 Rugby icon, Dick Laffan had much on his mind but two things in particular, coaching the NSW Waratahs against the British & Irish Lions and educating his son, Matt, who was extremely intelligent but wheelchair bound and needing much support.

First, the Rugby and with endless rain the game was moved from Concord to North Sydney Oval. Laffan had some genuine talent to work with, notably Nick Farr-Jones, Steve “Skylab” Cutler, future World Cup winners Marty Roebuck, David Campese, Simon Poidevin and a young Phil Kearns who was selected from Randwick Reserve Grade months before Wallaby coach, Bob Dwyer was celebrated for the same assessment. The Lions boasted Ackford, Dooley, underwood of the RAF, both Hastings brothers and the skipper, Ieuan Evans, not a bad side.

The crowd jammed North Sydney Oval as well as the venue watering hole across the road and saw a real contest. Dick remembers the Queensland referee overly sympathetic to the visiting red shirts after failing to observe a fair Darren Junee try. Drop goals from Craig Chalmers were influential and Roebuck dominated the home scoresheet but when the final siren sounded the Lions had scraped home 23-21 in a close encounter.

So what of Dick’s son, Matt! He found his independence and graduated in law, mostly thanks to his residence at St John’s College at Sydney university where his many mates took great care of him. Later he was chosen to be godfather of young Jessica Farr-Jones, Nick’s first born. Matt was a real Rugby man, however, his congenital challenges caught up with him in 2009 and he passed away leaving behind the inspiration for the Matt Laffan Scholarship.

Currently Ben, a wheelchair bound lad injured playing Rugby is the recipient of the Scholarship funded by the Annual Laffo’s Long Lunch which this year is the Official Reunion of the 1989 NSW v British & Irish Lions match which is also open to

all Waratahs supporters. The lunch is at Tattersall’s Club on June 13th and more information is at www.mattlaffan.com.au. Expect plenty of rugby memories, music, poetry, more rugby memories and no doubt plenty of great food and the best of fine wine and amber fluid.

The Annual match between the Central Coast Invitational XV and the Australian Army team was a very physical encounter last Sunday at The Haven, Terrigal. It was a close game from start to finish with both teams playing running rugby before a pleasing crowd with the match finishing in a 19 all draw.

Best players for the Central Coast team were lock Luke Hennig (Gosford), half-back Doug Angus (Terrigal), No.8 Emile Thomas (Avoca Beach), lock Adrian Davis (Gosford) and former Randwick centre, David Gee (Avoca Beach). It was a good game of Rugby and the match has become an important event on the Central Coast Rugby calendar.
