Sitting in his wheelchair, Seti Tafua got the warmest of welcomes when he watched his club Northern Suburbs play Eastwood at Millner Field. Then he was off to ANz Stadium to cheer home the All Blacks. And when the Bledisloe Cup game was over, journos Brendan Bradford and Paul Cook spotted All Blacks Ma’a Nonu and Victor Vito come out of the dressing room to chat warmly with Seti, who they knew from New zealand.

In the Aladdin’s Cave of items for auction at Sydney university’s vibrant lunch at the Westin was a bike ride at 6.30am with Tony Abbott, which went for $5,000. A boardroom lunch with John O’Neill drew $2,011. There were chances to fly in a fighter jet, ski at Chamonix in Switzerland or go on a safari to Londozli in Southern Africa. For cricket nuts, a fully catered lunch with Sir Vivian Richards, Michael Holding and Joel Garner. Wallaby Pat McCutcheon won the lucky door prize, the chance to experience the blinding speed of the latest McLaren MP4 12.

With a house full 943 guests in attendance, university’s annual fund-raiser stands supreme, with a rival club president remarking, “They make more in one day than most clubs make or spend in a year. Good luck to them. They do it magnificently.” Organiser Ray Dearlove and his team got everything right. The food, the wine, the entertainment.

Heading the speakers were Sir Graham Henry, who coached the All Blacks to victory in the World Cup, David Kirk, the former All Black captain, and Pat Howard, the Wallaby whose services have been snapped up by Cricket Australia. Never men to sugar-coat their opinions. Kirk, a most affable chap, recalled the crusty Henry beginning a pre-match address, “If you young fxxkers don’t do well, you’ll never play for the All Blacks again.”

After finishing work each Friday, Ian Walton jumps into his car at Coffs Harbour and makes a six hour trip to Sydney to watch sons Rory and Mitch playing for Northern Suburbs. Then he heads home to complete a trip of 1,100 kilometres and sometimes driving through the night after the game. On occasions he is accompanied by wife Leanne. Ian, who coached the boys in their junior days, knows his rugby, too, having played for NSW Country. He is unchallenged as our fan of the year, but perhaps you know somebody just as keen. Daughter Leanne is taking no chances with her upcoming wedding. Just in case Norths make the grand final on September 15, she has scheduled the big day for September 28.

Greg Peterson, Manly’s giant second-rower, is such a stickler for tidiness that he grabbed a broom and was sweeping the dressing room floor ten minutes before the warm up for the game against Norths. Suddenly his back went into spasm and he was a dropout from the 33-12 loss.

Steve’s stats: With the play-offs getting into full swing, Steve Johnson, statistician for the Waratahs, points out that the first curtain-raiser when Australia played France at the SCG in 1961 was a reserve grade semi-final between Sydney university and Norths. And when the New zealand under 21s played their Australian counterparts in the curtain-raiser to the famous 26-10 Bledisloe Cup victory by the Wallabies at the SCG in 1979, their fullback was a stripling named Robbie Deans.

Local boy makes good. Jed Gillespie, who lives five minutes from Millner Field, was an unlikely try-scoring hero there last Saturday. With the Woodies clinging to a 6-3 lead over Norths, the young prop, who had just come on as a replacement, broke up the sideline for 30 metres and scored. Over to Jed: “I was very nervous when the ball bounced into my hands, but I snuck under a tackle and took off. It was my first try in first grade.” The Sun Herald waxed lyrical: “He goose-stepped and side-stepped as only a prop can.”

NICK LAH Nick lah forged his ten year long career propping the

scrum at Northern Suburbs the hard way. With apparently endless reserves of dedication and determination, lah

epitomises everything that is good about club rugby.

there are few players – long-time front-row teammate Scott Podmore is one – who garner as much respect from coaches, players and spectators alike, and last

weekend he earned his 150th first-grade cap in the televised match against Eastwood.

despite the personal milestone, a bloody-nosed lah, in typical fashion praised the efforts of

the team over his own achievements.

“We’ve got plenty of depth this year, especially the young blokes,” he told the ABc.

“Every young bloke that’s come in has added something to the team.”

lah played down the blood-nose as just a graze before jokingly brushing off the praise of playing 150

games when he spoke to rugby News this week, “i’ve been around long enough!” he said.

in his 151st first-grade game this weekend, lah is looking to end an unwanted finals hoodoo.

“this will be my fourth semi-final over the years and we’ve lost all three!” he says.

having recorded their first win at manly Oval since 2001 and pushing Eastwood all the way in the last two weeks,

Norths are in the kind of form that could break lah’s finals drought.

Personal accomplishments and on field success aside though, it’s been a tough year for everyone at Northern

Suburbs.

the club was rocked by the tragic accident to Seti tafua but with their motto, ‘Fa’amalosi uso’ or, Stay Strong

Brother, the tight-knit squad has galvanised.

“it was devastating,” lah recalls. “But as a club you can go one of two ways: you can fall apart, or you can come

together, fundraise and do everything you can for Seti, and that’s the way we went.”

As a senior member of the squad, the father of two-year-old Ewan has been integral to the fundraising efforts and

to the club more generally.

"that’s just part of club rugby life,” he says. “Just trying to help out and give back to the club that’s given you so

much.”

Don’t tell me you don’t have much choice of what rugby to watch this weekend, because there’s top-level rugby wherever you look. And that’s apart from what you’re going to be seeing on TV, with the Bledisloe Cup being shown in Auckland tonight/last night. We have the new finals format this weekend, at Coogee and Woollahra Ovals today, then at both Millner Field and Merrylands RSL Rugby Park. The format allows the leading four-placed teams (Eastwood, Manly, Sydney university and Southern Districts) two chances to progress to the semi-finals.Now, if your team has gone missing, the venues are too far away, or you simply want something other than XV-a-side, then there’s the Oceania Sevens Championship this weekend at North Sydney Oval. You may, or may not, know that sevens rugby was conceived in 1883 to raise money for Melrose RFC, a well-known Scottish border club. The bright spark who came up with the idea was Ned Haig, a local butcher and club member, and the gate money from that inventive form of rugby kept the club well and truly alive and kicking.I’ve been a fan of sevens since attending the inaugural Hong Kong Sevens at Hong Kong Football Club in Happy Valley way back in March 1976 and then returning annually for some years. The atmosphere there was just so different, beside the fact it was also one of the first rugby tournaments to attract commercial sponsorship. Eventually it outgrew its original home and moved in 1982 to Hong Kong Stadium. To this day it remains one of the most exciting sporting contests you could ever witness, because it’s action, excitement, action, excitement from start to finish. The global interest generated by the Hong Kong sevens went a long way towards establishing the Rugby World Cup Sevens, with this weekend’s Sydney tournament an important part of that framework. It features two pools, with Australia heading Pool B, alongside the Solomon Islands, American Samoa and Tonga. Samoa heads up Pool A with Papua New Guinea, the Cook Islands and Tahiti.

The Oceania Sevens acts as a qualifier for the Rugby World Cup Sevens 2013 in Russia and, with New zealand, Fiji and Samoa already qualified, only two spots from Oceania remain up for grabs.Australia’s sevens coach, Michael O’Connor, says his side enters the tournament with confidence, but warns “there’s some pretty handy sides in our pool.”“But we’re focused on getting our own house in order. The guys know what’s at stake and we know the gravity of the occasion; but the fact is we’re playing in front of a home crowd.”Tournament director Michael Groom said the Oceania Sevens has developed a reputation for exciting and, at times, unpredictable rugby between some of the world’s best.“Sydney is in for a real treat, with the caliber of teams participating, combined with the fact that World Cup spots are up for grabs.“Samoa and Australia, in particular, have developed an incredible rivalry in the Oceania Sevens and we are going to see the next chapter played out in Sydney.”IRB general manager, Oceania, William Glenwright, says tournaments like this are an important barometer of the success of the IRB’s Pacific investment. “The IRB invests over $7 million in the Oceania region each year and international competition is the pointy end of that investment.”Matches on opening day start at 11am, with Australia facing the Solomon Islands at 12.06pm, before meeting American Samoa at 1.43pm and Tonga at 3.20pm.Day two features playoff action, again kicking off at 11am and wrapping up with the championship match. Here’s the full draw:Saturday: 11am, Papua New Guinea v Cook Islands; 11.22am, Samoa v Tahiti; 11.44am, Tonga v American Samoa; 12.06pm, Australia v Solomon Islands; 12.37pm. Papua New Guinea v Tahiti; 12.59pm, Samoa v Cook Islands; 1.21pm, Tonga v Solomon Islands; 1.43pm, Australia v American Samoa; 2.14pm, Cook Islands v Tahiti; 2.36pm, Samoa v Papua New Guinea; 2.58pm, American Samoa v Solomon Islands; 3.20pm, Australia v Tonga.Sunday features the playoffs, coming to a closure at 2.14pm with 7th v 8th playoff; 2.36pm, 5th v 6th playoff; 2.58pm, 3rd v 4th playoff; and the final at 3.20pm.

Oceana Sevens is on here in a big Rugby Weekend.

RODNEY MA’A After a fifth place finish, Parramatta will this

weekend cap off a remarkable resurgence by ending a 21-year finals drought. Openside flanker rodney ma’a has been an integral part of the two

Blues’ 2012 season and the club’s success is reflected in ma’a’s personal revival.

After playing juniors and colts for Parramatta, ma’a left merrylands before returning two years ago

after an appeal by general manager, michael Bell.

“he (Bell) told me he was trying to build something at Parramatta and i wanted come back and play

regular first grade at the place where i first played rugby union,” says ma’a.

it was a leap of faith returning to his junior club at a time when they weren’t faring so well - and a

decision that shocked some of his friends.

But the two tries he scored last weekend as Parramatta secured fifth place on the ladder made

the risk and the hard work worthwhile.

“it’s been an awesome journey,” says the 104kg flanker. “We’ve been training and playing hard,

that’s where the success comes from, plus all the work of michael Bell and glen christini – he’s the

Super coach.”

Of Samoan, cook islands and german descent ma’a – who grew up in league territory in

macquarie Fields – was encouraged to play union by his dad and has represented Australia at

Schoolboys and u-19 level.

A physical, nuggetty player with great ball skills, the uncompromising 24 year-old doesn’t need to look far for rugby advice. “my uncle on my

mother’s side is george leaupepe and ma’a Nonu is my first cousin,” he says.

With close Kiwi ties, ma’a admits a partiality to the All Blacks as a youngster but stresses those

days are far behind him. “Once you’ve played for Australia against New Zealand, you just want to

smash them!”

While he revels in his no-nonsense on-field persona, off the pitch ma’a is a softly-spoken

family man. But don't let his sensitive side fool you, a challenging career as a corrections officer

ensures rodney ma'a is not one to be messed with!

Attention Waratahs: A number of players in the spotlight in this weekend’s qualifying finals are being wooed by rival franchises and one even has caught the eye of London Irish. For instance, the Force is showing interest in Eastwood halfback Mick Snowden, Manly hooker-prop James Hilterbrand and Ben Volavola, of Southern Districts, while the Brumbies also are speaking to Snowden and Hilterbrand. Sydney university’s Trent Dyer has caught the eye of the Melbourne Rebels. Manly’s wing flier Richard Hooper, who swept in a hat-trick of tries against Easts last weekend, has decided it would be better at this stage of his career to stay in Australia rather than try his luck with London Irish.

Coach Todd Louden predicts that rugby aficianados will see a more enterprising university in the play-offs, one that doesn’t base its play largely around kicking and a string of pick-and-drives. It will be different and a lot more expansive. “Not the university of old, but collectively the guys love it. Dave Brockhoff would be delighted by some of the support play.” says Louden, who seems to be timing university’s run home like Bart Cummings preparing a thoroughbred for the Melbourne Cup.

There are some intriguing match-ups in this weekend’s qualifying finals in which university clash with Manly at Coogee on Saturday and Eastwood are at home to Southern Districts on Sunday. In the other two games, Northern Suburbs and Warringah are opposed at Woollahra on Saturday while Parramatta play arch rivals West Harbour in which could be a try-fest at Merrylands RSL Rugby Park. Next week the losers of university v Manly and Eastwood v Southern Districts back up against the winners of the other two matches.

MANLY v SYDNEY UNIvERSITYIf Sydney university makes the grand final, coach Todd Louden says that barring injury it will field basically the team that takes the field in Saturday’s qualifying final against Manly at Coogee. Wallaby Ben McCalman has broken his arm, Daniel Halangahu gone to Parma in Italy, Jono Jenkins headed to France and several other big names will be on Wallaby duty. The only change from the side that demolished Southern Districts 45-17 is Trent

Dyer at flanker for the luckless McCalman.

“There will be a lot of tough stuff in the trenches,” says Manly coach Tim Lane. “We’ve beaten them twice this year, which will make them even more pumped.” The only change made by the Marlins following the 55-21 eclipse of Easts is Peter Gilmore in the centre for Malietoa Hingano, who has had a head knock. Casting an eye at the plethora of Super Rugby players in the university ranks, Lane reflected: “We’ve done incredibly well with only one Super Rugby player (Cadeyrn Neville) in our team.”

Earlier matches: Round 2: Manly 28-26 (at Many Oval); Round 13: Manly 37-25 (at university Oval)

NORTHERN SUBURBS v WARRINGAHCoach Scott Fava is proud that Norths have the best defensive record in the competition, a mere 290 points in 16 games, one less than Sydney university. “Our attack needs to improve but teams

SYDNEY PREMIER RuGBY

find us hard to get through and semi-finals and grand finals are won on defence,” he says. With such defensive qualities and Dave Harvey potting the goals, anything can happen. Several changes in the Norths team, with Cruz Ah Nu returning at loose-head prop, Dave Hardisty at halfback and Samu

Wara in the centre for the hardest-to-pick game in the weekend.

The only change at Warringah after the 46-7 romp against Penrith is the return of Mark Porpiglia at flanker. With Wallaby Brett Sheehan stirring the mix at halfback, the Rats have genuine zip in the backs through Dylan Smouha and David Feltscheer. “Norths are a hot side,” says Warringah coach Sam Harris. “It’ll be very tough.” It would seem to be a case of whether Norths’ red and black defensive line can snuff out the opposing flair.

Earlier match: Round 10: Norths 35-19 (North Sydney)

EASTWOOD v SOUTHERN DISTRICTSAlthough premiers Eastwood are not piling up big numbers like Sydney university and Manly, coach John Manenti is delighted with their knack of winning the close ones. However, it seems at Millner Field they will be without Waratah Chris Alcock, who suffered a knock on the shoulder. Miles McCaffrey comes into the back-row and veteran Nick Reily is

a new winger.

Manenti predicts: “A very tough game. They’ve got big forwards who can rumble all day and backs that play wide. It’ll be on, real semi-final footy.” Souths, coming off a 45-17 hiding from a pumped up Sydney university, get a big boost from the return of centre Nic Cummins, who was training with the Wallabies last week.

Harking to uni posting seven tries, Souths coach Cam Blades said: “Finals football came a week early, but we’ll lift our game. We have to.”

Earlier match: Round 13: Eastwood 27-20 (At Forshaw Park)

PARRAMATTA v WEST HARBOURParramatta have beefed up their team with the return of Adam Coleman in the second-row, Jesse Leota in the centre and Moses Tavola on the wing for this Sunday game against unchanged West Harbour at Merrylands RSL Rugby Park.

Coach Glen Christini isn’t fooled by his team’s 2-0 record against Wests this year and says: “We’ve got to keep things tight because they’ve got nothing to lose and have some guys in the backs who can break you.

As few of his players have any experience of play-offs, Christini feels one of his biggest jobs will be to keep them calm. However, this does not apply to Sosene Anesi, who supplies the X-factor to be

expected from an All Black as he figures in a roving role from the wing.

Although West Harbour only sneaked into the play-offs through a humble bonus point, coach Daniel Manu predicts: “It’s going to be a close one but we’ll have to pick up our defence.” An obvious danger man wil l be West Harbour fullback Shaun Treweek, who swept in for two tries to take his tally for the season to 13, only one behind the leading try-scorer Corey Brown, of Norths.

cOltS REPORTby Hamish McCathie

I have fond memories in the early 80’s watching Glen Da Vanzo and Peter Lucas play against Easts when I was 11 years old. I pretended to be Da Vanzo in the living room when re-playing the days play. I have a soft spot for St George and Port Hacking so I hope Souths don’t take this the wrong way. Over the last few years the Colts finals and now the Grand Finals are played at Forshaw Park. At this time of the year there always seems to be a gale blowing at Forshaw and I think this is a shame for finals Rugby. I believe playing when a strong wind is present levels teams out. Teams change tactics to use or run into the wind and we don’t get a real idea of how these teams play when at their best. I would love to see the finals move back to Concord Oval which seems to have that special “finals feel” about it.

SydNEy uNivErSity 39 v NOrthErN SuBurBS 21:

Norths put in a stronger performance although never really challenged a safe and consistent uni team. Norths made too many errors and missed too many tackles. Jack Cameron and Harold Hobden were the Shoremens best whilst for uni James Dargaville scored a double and Chris Ingate was always a handful.

WESt hArBOur 34 v mANly 28:

Manly led by ten points with twenty minutes to go and looked very much in control of this game until things changed. Wests were lifted by their big crowd (as their seconds colts were re-scheduled to play before this match from Sunday) and the referee started to blow the pea out of the whistle. Wests received ten penalties in a row and got themselves right back into the game and run out victors. Once again the Wests front row was awesome and Louise Ferris has done a great job to get the boys into the Preliminary finals.

rANdWicK 38 v gOrdON 25:

Last week I wrote up Randwicks breakaways in Tom Connor and Mark Baldwin. The lads didn’t disappoint with two stellar performances. They were both rewarded with a try as Randwick scored four tries to Gordons three. Randwick proved too strong and went out victors 38-25 against a solid Gordon performance.

EAStWOOd 22 v WArriNgAh 16:

Eastwood dominated territory and looked most likely to score for the majority of the match, but Warringah proved very hard to beat and actually led for nearly as much of the game as the Woods did. After 18 minutes the Rats had yet to leave their half, but it was still nil-all and then they scored first to take a surprise 5 - 0 lead after 21 minutes. It was 5 - all at the break.

Eastwood ran in a couple of tries, but two penalties and a try saw the Rats take the lead with 17 minutes to go. Eastwood bounced back with a tremendous 60 metre try and some stoic defence to deny Warringah victory. Brad Curtis shone again, but Jack Leslie at flanker had a tremendous influence with his tenacious tackling and persistence in all departments for the Woodies.

thiS WEEKS gAmES:

rANdWicK v mANly: SAturdAy 3pm FOrShAW PArK

The winner of this game meets Sydney university next week. This is a really tough game to pick however I am leaning towards the Wicks for two reasons. Firstly Manly have had a tough 6 weeks playing in the top tier and secondly the Baldwin, Connor factor.

EAStWOOd v NOrthErN SuBurBS: SuNdAy 3pm FOrShAW PArK

Both these teams have been battered for the last 6 weeks in a gruelling campaign. I think the Woodies finals experience will get them home in what is going to be another tough encounter.

Eastwood flanker Jack Leslie, pictured above in a driving tackle of Warringah No.8 Pierce Howell, received a wrap from Hamish McCathie (Colts Report page 19) for his top-gun game against the Rats.

A few weeks ago, the Lane Cove Rugby Club held a large get-together at the Longueville Sporting Club to celebrate its history with the unveiling of a trophy cabinet and the screening of a video, called "It's A Jolly Good Story All The Same". Lane Cove R.C.has never had a clubhouse, so the trophy cabinet will finally provide a home for the club's precious memorabilia, while the video tells the history of the club. It's a 1 hour 20 minute film, introduced by Gordon Bray, about mateship, grassroots rugby and growing up in Sydney. Even back to the beginning of the club in the early fiftiesLifelong friendships that were formed through playing for the love of the game are at its core. Players, past and present, from the country who travel hundreds of kilometres a year to play the game with their mates would have an affinity with this film too. It is an Australian story, professionally produced.Lane Cove's Wallabies (Saxon White and Ken Yanz), its Kangaroo (Greg Florimo) and a host of club stalwarts like Maurie Batcheler, Kevin Preston and Bill Currie were interviewed. Also on film are former suburban foes from Briars, Colleagues and Bondi Lifesavers. There is some real Australian rugby history - from 1950s Wallaby Tour recollections of Apartheid South Africa and a diplomatic incident at Buckingham Palace; to the training secrets of John Singleton’s 1977 Judd Cup Premiership winning side (dubbed by Rugby League Week "The team that set rugby union back 30 years"). It travels to today with scenes of the club's current seniors and some of its 380 juniors. The DVD tells of the hard work behind the scenes, the mateship and mischief of training sessions "down the pub" and illustrates how rugby at grass roots level provides a bonding that leads to very special lifelong friendships.

Like most clubs, Gordon are trying to get back to real Club Rugby both on and off the field. They recently formed the “Friends of Gordon” which are made up former Highlanders with a lot of the members from players back in the 70's era.

They have been quietly working in the background to attempt to turn this great club around both on the paddock and also after the game in the true spirit of Sydney Club Rugby.

One of the features of the club this year has been the large number of former juniors in the 1st and Reserve Grades, some 23 players and most in their early 20’s.

It has been a challenging season for the young players but they have stuck to the task. They have all gained tremendous experience that will stand them in good stead for next season.

Still up Chatswood way, young Hamish McGilvray after having his ankles strapped when his Dad handed him his old faded woolen Gordon socks from back when he played and asked him to wear them as it was the last game of the season. He had intended to give them to his son on the day he played his 100th Game for the Highlanders but that occurred in 1st Grade against Sydney university and the old man didn’t want anything to go wrong for him during the game so he held the socks back till the end of the season. I hope he had washed them after all these years.

There would have been some good stories coming out of Manly's Ladies Day last Saturday which may have been helped along with several glasses of champagne in the beautiful afternoon sunshine.

Spectators and players noticed the ladies doing all sorts of things to the tackle bags including crash tackles, dumps and “massaging” the bags while one of the many beauties tackled the young Manly Touch Judge.

As my informant, a long time Beastie said, “The half- time entertainment was more enjoyable than the main game with the Easts defence falling well short of the ladies efforts that afternoon”.

In the same game East’s centre, Anton Lavin played his 100th First Grade match for the Beasties last Saturday. Anton came through the Easts Wallaroos Juniors and also attended The Scots College.

Myall Coast, who are coached by former Manly & Warringah player and coach, Ian Felton and former Gordon hooker, Hugh “Flash” Gordon, play in the Lower Mid North Coast Grand Final today at Hawks Nest.

The Mudcrabs beat the undefeated, Forster-Tuncurry Dolphins a few weeks ago in the Major Semi-final to qualify to play last year’s LMNC Premiers, Old Bar after they beat the Dolphins, in only their second defeat of the year, to make it to the decider.

One interesting factor is that Old Bar’s outstanding back-rower, Chris Marchant was coached by Felton in the Colts at Warringah many years ago. Myall Coast are also hoping the talented former Southern Districts Colts player, James Moses is able to return from injury.

In the upper Mid North Coast 1st Grade Competition Minor Premiers, Coffs Harbour, who are coached by former Australian Schoolboys and Randwick Rugby Coach Geoff Mould, will play the winner of today’s match between Port Macquarie and Hastings Valley in next week’s Grand Final.

Still on Rugby in Country NSW, Mid North Coast Rugby Director, Trent O’Donnell was about to leave his home to assist at the upper Mid North Coast semi-finals last week at Coffs Harbour. A few people were concerned as he hadn’t shown up.

However, he had a pretty good reason as his cows had got through the fence so poor Trent had to rustle them up from the road outside his property before he could leave. He did finally make it to the ground.

Last weekend marked a few milestones at North’s when Pat Sio made his First Grade debut alongside Ben Matwijow who played his 50th 1st Grade game while Nick Lah took the field for his 150th 1st Grade appearance.

Congratulations on some very important milestones in their Rugby careers at Norths.
