Curated by Creative Director, Thomas Woodham-Smith, The European Treasures Pavilion at Fine Art Asia reflects the amazing breadth and range of art created in Europe over the last 3,000 years, from ancient stone sculpture to modern design employing traditional materials in innovative ways.

The European Treasures Pavilion features an eclectic and impressive array of Western heritage and craftsmanship. The earliest piece in the group is a rare small Cycladic idol from New York dealers Ariadne Galleries. At the other end of the time line we have a Henry Moore masterpiece from Osborne Samuel and a rare patinated bronze ‘Osselet’ standard lamp by Alberto Giacometti (1901–66) provided by Rose Uniacke.

The wealth of world Furniture is represented by a Classic of English furniture, a George III satinwood rent table, c. 1780, from Ronald Phillips and from Röbbig Munich a very rare card table by renowned German furniture maker David Roentgen (1743–1801). Also from Röbbig Munich are three early Meissen vases from the Period of Augustus the Strong, around 1735.

We have examples of Old Masters from Italy and England. There is a spectacular 18th century view of ‘Venice, the Grand Canal with the church of San Stae’ by Michele Marieschi from Robilant + Voena, a master sketch by Lawrence from Dickinson in London and from The Fine Art Society William Hamilton’s ‘Mary Queen of Scots’. Finally, Daniel Crouch Rare Books will provide the Maps of the Four Continents created by Dutch cartographer Willem Blaeu in c. 1646.

As this complex world of collecting is not just about furniture and painting, we are also delighted to present a magnificent example of arms and armour from Peter Finer, a Japanese helmet in the Portuguese style and a rare Faberé jewel from Wartski.

Although chiefly known for his sculpture and contribution to the Surrealist movement, during the early 1930s Alberto Giacometti also designed lamps and furniture for Jean-Michel Frank in Paris. During this period Alberto’s work moved in a similar direction to that of his brother Diego, also a furniture designer, with whom he shared a studio.

After the Second World War Alberto Giacometti began to concentrate almost entirely on sculpture whist his brother continued to design furniture. As a result Alberto’s lighting and furniture is far rarer than that of his younger brother. The Osselet standard lamp is one of his most iconic designs.
