Where is the Closest Library?

• Archibald S. Alexander Library (affectionately known as “Alex”)

• It’s right next door! (between the SC&I Building and the College Ave. Parking Deck)

• Alex was built in 1956 and is the oldest and largest of the RU Libraries.

• A café, The Scarlet Latte, was added in 2011.

• Watch LISSA listserv for tour info (and be sure to sign up)!

What about Other RU Libraries?

• As a Rutgers student, you are eligible to use other campus libraries.

• Some classes may require visits to other campus libraries.

• You may live near another campus and find it convenient to use that library.

10

Page 11: RU Libraries

VALE NJ

• Rutgers is a member of VALE (Virtual Academic Library Environment) NJ, which means that you may be eligible to borrow materials from another college campus near you.

• For more information, including a list of participating institutions, click here.

The URL (Uniform Resource Locator) for the RU Libraries Website ishttp://www.libraries.rutgers.edu.

The website provides information about all the libraries affiliated with the University.

Page 13: RU Libraries

Why can’t I just Google it?

• The Rutgers Library Catalog connects you with resources available at Rutgers or through ILL (Inter-Library Lending) consortia

• Library website provides access to online indexes and databases not available via Google

• Materials for some classes may be on Electronic Reserve

13

Get your Library Card!

• Your library card = your RU student ID

• Before you borrow materials, you will need to register the barcode number on the back of your ID card. PIN numbers are no longer issued.

• Let’s do that now! (You can also stop by the Alex circulation desk during operating hours).

17

Page 18: RU Libraries

Library Catalog: Tips and Tricks

• Repeat title search: Seeking Meaning

Mark record and e-mail to yourself (or to a group partner)

Use subject heading hyperlinks to find more information on topics of interest

Compare Book Delivery/Recall function with Book Special Request function

18

Page 19: RU Libraries

Fines for Overdue Recall Items

• The fine for a recalled item that is not returned within 14 days is $5.00/day up to $50.00.

20

Page 21: RU Libraries

Research Resources

• Let’s explore the subject guides…21

Page 22: RU Libraries

You try: Library Catalog Search

• Periodical search: Library Journal

• Use the “Advanced Search” and the “match on” … exact content…

• You can find journals by title in IRIS, but you cannot search for articles by title

22

Page 24: RU Libraries

24

Page 25: RU Libraries

How Do I Find an Article?

• Start with Indexes and Databases; choose a periodical index that covers your subject of interest.

• Get help from the library!

• Don’t forget, you can always Ask a Librarian.

• Also, check out the FAQs and the How Do I's on the library website.

25

Page 26: RU Libraries

Databases differ!

• Not all databases provide access to full text of articles.

• Find American Libraries in “Library Literature and Information Science.” Select any article and see what is available.

• Find American Libraries in “Academic Search Premier.” Select the same article and compare with LLIS results.

• Review How Do I Get My Article?

26

Page 27: RU Libraries

Searchlight

27

Searchlight can help you get started!

Let’s look for an article with the word “Googlizers” in the title.

Page 28: RU Libraries

Remember…

• Searchlight only searches the databases listed (see previous slide).

• To search other databases, use the links in Indexes and Databases (select by subject or alphabetically).

• You can mark and e-mail search results to yourself so you don’t have to recreate searches.

Restricted Access

• Certain Electronic Resources have licenses that restrict access to current students, faculty, and staff: On site (LOCAL) Off site (REMOTE)

• Access is usually limited to a certain number of users at one time. If you have trouble getting into a database, try again at a later time.

32

Page 33: RU Libraries

Local / Remote

33

Page 34: RU Libraries

Local / Remote

• Campus computers are local.

• If you connect your laptop on campus using the RU wireless network, your computer will be local.

• If you access the library website from your home computer or other off-campus location, you will be connecting remotely.

Remote Connection Tips

• Connection times out after extended inactivity; just re-enter your NetID and password.

• Occasionally gets “confused” if results are opened in too many new windows; try to open in one window.

• See “How Do I Connect from Off-Campus?”
