Research Resources Utilization: RTRN’s Hidden Resource - Biological Specimens
Input Process Outcomes Date/Time
Phase 1 Biorepository Survey Administered by the RTRN DCC R3N - Spearheaded by the Biorepository Working Group (BWG)
Determined there was a desire and common need for biorepository infrastructure and resource sharing
Sept. 2013-Dec. 2013
Phase 2 Engaged BWG members in development of “RTRN Virtual Biorepository (V-Bio)” and gathered specific data that pertained to collaborators’ biorepositories
Grant Development - efforts led by the BWG leadership and presented in the form of a RTRN Small Grants Application by Dr. Jeremy Ross-UTEP and Dr. Nathan Bowen- CAU
Jan-Feb 2014 (RTRN SGP failed 07/14)
Develop the informatics infrastructure to encourage collaboration in health disparities research (The effort has been revamped to gather more traction with more working groups and clusters.
The BWG agreed to the use of BSI (Biological Specimen Inventory System) Information Management Services (IMS);Informational Webinars given to 24 RTRN stakeholders
March 2014
Phase 3 (If project approved & funded)Infrastructure procurement, system deployment and implementation activities
The RTRN Consortium would have a robust system for biological specimen inventorying, tracking and related sharing/collaborative activities
TBD
Request for in-kind services from Information Management Systems, Inc (IMS) to provide BSI to for a tool to clinically annotated and catalog biospecimens at collaborating institutions.
IMS has agreed to provide BSI in-kind. The core BWG participants are moving forward.
March/April 2015

Research Resources: The BWG Goals & Mission and Vision
Goals: The Biorepositories Working Group’s goals are to identify and leverage biospecimen resources within the RCMI community and share best practices.Mission and Vision: Its mission and vision is to improve the quality and availability of biospecimens from ethnically diverse populations by increasing access to technical assistance, addressing ethical, social, and cultural issues, improving informed consent processes and dissemination strategies for participants and researchers, and ultimately ensuring that biospecimens and associated data are used in effective and ethically sound studies designed to reduce health disparities in the communities served by RCMI grantee institutions.

Open Statement/Question: Meaningful Research Resource and Research Tool Utilization
Meaningful Collaborations$$$
• Is it of value to develop and maintain professional relationships with key opinion and thought leaders across the network (If so, why isn’t ...?)
• Is it of value to present data and facilitate identification and presentation of research opportunities (If so why aren’t ...?)
• Is it of value to have resource tools that may assist you in finding expertise and research resources towards research development activities including proposal assimilation (If so why aren’t ...?)
• Is it of value to uncover unique opportunities to develop and/or implement and provide research input (If so why don’t ...?)
