Event Details
ForestFieldDayswithstandsthetestoftime.Thepro-gramhasrunsince1992withsomeofthesameschoolsparticipatingsincetheverybeginning!Overtwodecadesand40,000middleschoolers,certainlysomethingisworking-andwewanttoensureitcontinuestoworkformanyyearsintothefuture.
ForestsToday&ForeverisembarkingonacurriculumrevisiontoensuretheongoingrelevanceofForestFieldDaystoschools.Theoriginalcurrriculumhasseenonlyminorchangesandrevisionsoveritsmanyyears.Withfederalandstateeducationstandardsinplaceandtheex-pectationthatteachersinstructtothestandards,changesandmodificationsarenecessarytobetterassistteachersinmeetingclassroomlearningobjectives.Science,Math-ematics,LanguageArts,andSocialSciencestandardsareaddressedbytheupdatedForestFieldDayprogram,makingitatrulyinterdisciplinarycurriculum,anddemon-stratingthemanyconsiderationswhenmanagingforests.
Whiletherevisionison-goingthrough2016,therehavealreadybeensomeexcitingchanges.Ifyouarefamiliar
withourprogram,youknowthatForestFieldDaysisacurriculumcenteredaroundarole-playactivitywheresiblingsinherittheirgrandmother’streefarm.Thestu-dentstakethecurriculumconceptsintothefieldwheretheyengageinhands-onlearningthatassiststhemincreatingafive-yearmanagementplan.ThemanagementplanactivityalignswiththeSciencestandard,whichasksstudentstoexamine human impacts on the environment.
Additionally,wehavemadethecurriculumevenmoreeducationalbyincorporatingGoogleEarthProorESRIforstudentstocreatetheirforestmanagementmaps.Thechangetodigitalmappinggivesteachersawaytoincorporatetechnologyintotheirclassrooms,andofferscareerlearningbygivingstudentsaglimpseintohowanindustryforesterorlandownermightgoabouttheverysametaskaskedofstudents.
Thestrongerlinktoeducationstandards,whichistheintentoftherevision,allowsForestFieldDaystoremainarelevantprogramforschoolparticipation.Withtheorig-inalspiritandintentofthisgreatprogramintact,welookforwardtothenext20yearsofsharingthevalueofourforestswithmiddleschoolers,andhelpingthemunder-standandappreciateactivemanagement.

Spring 2016 Forest Field days SummaryForestFieldDaysatBaumanandHappyValleyTreeFarmsserved754studentsfromfiveschooldistricts.Studentswereguid-edthroughtheexperiencealongside111teachersandchaperones,whoalsolearnedaboutforestmanagementofwesternOre-gonforests.
ForestFieldDaysispossiblebecauseofthegeneroussupportofmany.ThankyoutoTom Bauman & Lindsay Reaves(LaneCounty)andtheUdell Family (LinnCounty)fordonatingtheirforestland,allowingstudentstoexperienceandlearnaboutOregon’snumberoneresource.Thankyoutothe69 volunteers,whogenerouslydedicatedover500hoursthisseason,toteachstudentsbysharingtheirskillsandexpertise.ThankyoutoOregon Forest Resources Instituteforprovidingthetransportationfundingthatallowsourprogramtoremainfreetoanyschoolintheareathatwishestoparticipateinourprogram.Finally,thankyoutoourspon-sors and donors whoprovidethefundingessentialfororganizing,coordinating,andequipingthisgreatprogram.

Service Learning = Forest LearningThanksto8thgradersfromO’HaraCatholicSchoolforthehardworktohelppreparefortheForestFieldDayprogramsatBaumanTreeFarm!Havingvisitedthetreefarmas7thgradersforForestFieldDays,thestudentswereenthusiastic,andtheirteacher,ClintLarson,wasexcitedtogivebacktotheprogram.
The528thgraderswerenotafraidtogettheirhandsdirtytomakethesitewelcomingforthehundredsofstudentssched-uledtovisitduringthisspring’sForestFieldDays.Studentspulledinvasives,clearedpaths,spreadgravel,cuttrail,shov-eledwoodchips,andmore!Therecreationtrailnowhasafreshpathofwoodchips,theriparianpathatthewaterstationhasafreshblanketofgravel,andthereisnotaninvasiveinsightalongthewildlifetrail.
Whileworkingintheforest,learningopportunitiesabound...studentsgotupcloseandpersonalwithbananaslugs,learnedtoidentifyinvasivespeciesandpoisonoak,andevenlearnedalittlebitaboutforestthinning.Aftertheserviceprojects,FTFEducatorandtreefarmowner,LindsayReaves,touredthestu-dentsthroughayoungforestuptoavistawheretheycouldobservethetreefarmfromabove.Programslikethisbuilduponpriorlearningexperiencesandreiteratetheimportanceofforeststewardshipandsoundmanagementpractices.Welookforwardtothenextyear’sgroupofO’Hara8thgraders!
