PRES IDENT ’S MESSAGE

The re-branding event was a success beyond expectation. The programme was simple, yet well balanced and engaging. Attendance was

great and appreciative and the publicity fantastic.

I wish to say a special thank you to:

• Our Guest of Honour, Minister Lim Boon Heng, who graced our event the third time in so many months.

- Marie and Fawziah Mattar

- A whole host of volunteers: those who took part in the entertainment, those who provided general help and those who spent hours getting our guests to come.

- Our General Manager and staff who worked quietly and effi ciently to see that things fell into place.

- Our invited Guests who took time to come

- And fi nally, the wonderful people from the various media for their support and reporting which made us better known to our external publics.

Yes, we are better known now as “The Organisation of Senior Volunteers”. We are better acknowledged for doing service well. Being better known, much is expected of us in the days to come.

So, to work we must, in order to really show our worth.

To begin, we must buy in our new name – Senior Volunteers. Every member must be proud to be a senior volunteer, volunteering his or her talent and experience in the service of the community, and at the same time, age with a purpose fulfi lled.

Worldly gains, if they come our way are appreciated but never to be pursued.

Instead, we must learn to pursue our core values.

We must learn to be respectful. We must learn to be kind and humble. We must learn to render selfl ess service. We must learn to be honest and forgiving. We must learn to be committed to our mission, pursuing it with passion.

These attributes, if learned, will make us and our organisation well respected and worthy to join.

Fawziah Mattar,

(The Organisation of Senior Volunteers),

• The Board is pleased to announce that Mr Richard Lim, Vice-Chair of the Changi Senior Ambassador Programme and member of the Human Resource Development Committee has agreed to be co-opted to the Board. He would assume the position of Assistant Honorary Treasurer.

PRES IDENT ’S MESSAGE

With this re-branding, all programmes are being enhanced, some expanded and new initiatives are being introduced. The working environment too has been improved and additional staff are being employed.

We need you, each one of you, to give more of your time as volunteers. Those who still can’t fi nd any programmes that they feel they want to volunteer in, should consider seriously to be donor members. Our ultimate goal is to have every member a volunteer.

Without you, as I have said many times, there is no RSVP. You are RSVP. With each of you participating and giving of your best, nothing is impossible.

COME, BE THE CHANGE WE WANT TO SEE.

God Bless.

WELCOME GARY LOKE

RSVP BR IEFS

Gary Loke has had a varied career working in several countries in the region: China, Vietnam, Sri Lanka and Malaysia. He received his qualifi cations in

engineering from City University (London) and business studies from NTU.

After working with local MNCs for about 9 years in corporate management, he then transited to academia where he taught undergraduates and adults in Vietnam for 3 years, and another 2 years as a primary school teacher at the Shanghai Singapore International School in China. He also did a 2-year stint as Administrative Offi cer in two nursing homes for the elderly.

Passionately supporting the diversifi ed RSVP’s Mentoring Programme and the PDIC, Gary enjoys his work which he considers as a more meaningful pursuit.

As one who actively aims to strike a good work/life balance in his career, he has adopted a philosophical stance in life, meaning “It’s no use to run fast; if you are running in the wrong direction.”

His indulgences during his spare time include reading, travelling and coaching his young daughter in her development.

Gary Loke

RSVP BR IEFS

The offi cial launch of the rebranding of RSVP Singapore was held on Monday 2 March 2009 with Mr Lim Boon Heng, Minister in charge of Ageing Issues and Minister

in the Prime Minister’s Offi ce, as the Guest of Honour. About 100 members, partners in service and donors attended.

The opening speech by Dr Philbert Chin, RSVP President, traced the history of the organisation, its realization, aspirations, plans and action. Below are excerpts of the speech.

“RSVP Singapore was conceived in April 1997; its distinguished parentage was the National Council of Social Service and the then Ministry of Community Development. RSVP can trace its lineage to 1966 when the 1st RSVP (originally known as SERVE –Service and Enriched Retirement by Volunteer Experience) was established in New York City in USA. In 1969, it was legislated by the US Congress with the name ‘RSVP’ (Retired & Senior Volunteer Programme) as a National Programme.”

“From the start we were uncomfortable with the name “Retired & Senior Volunteer Programme”. We are really not a programme. However, not to abandon our heritage, we decided to accept the name…”

Rebranding of RSVP Singapore

“新加坡 RSVP 成立的概念早于1997 年四月开始产生,它的不同家系机构有 National Council of Social Service 和其后的 Ministry of Community Development. RSVP 的家 系可以追到1966 年分第一代的 RSVP (源自S E R V E - Service and Enriched Retirement by Volunteer Experience) 创立于美国纽约,由美国立法机构以 “RSVP”(Retired and Senior Volunteer Programme) 法定成为 “National Programme” (国立协会),”

PROGRAMME & PROJECTSPROGRAMME & PROJECTSRSVP BR IEFS

“As we grew, we began to see more and more that we are not a programme. Change became imperative. With this we began to refi ne our vision, mission, core values and the attributes that we want to inculcate in our members as servant leaders.”

“Our new awakening as who we are and what our mission is and what we are dedicated to doing is shared by Minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan. Through his help we were able to have our name changed… Thus our new name, RSVP Singapore – The Organisation of Senior Volunteers.”

“The rebranding is not only about the name change. This rebranding is about being the change we want to see. – taking on new responsibilities and new challenges in fulfi lling our commitment to become really The Organisation of Senior Volunteers.”

With the rebranding we can look forward to the enhancement and expansion of our core programmes and the introduction of new initiatives, like the SeniorsExpress Programme planned to help seniors age actively in the areas of healthy lifestyle activities, physical activities, social activities and intellectually stimulating activities.

continued from previous page

PROGRAMME

Jointly organised with IDA and Singapore Polytechnic, our Silver Infocomm Day last year was spread over two Saturdays, 22 and 29 November 2008.

More than 1,000 seniors turned up at the Singapore Polytechnic for the learning event. Eighteen laboratories, each equipped with 20 computers, were packed with seniors eager to keep abreast of IT. They came to learn, listen to educational IT talks and participate in the games.

Guest of Honour RADM(NS) Lui Tuck Yew, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Information, Communications & the Arts and Ministry of Education, offi ciated at the opening and toured the exhibits. It was announced then that two more Silver Infocomm Junctions would be opened – one at Bukit Panjang CDAC and the other at Marine Parade Family Service Centre. RSVP trainers and tutors will assist with classes at the former.

Many seniors signed up with RSVP at the event for follow up courses using the newly launched IDA courseware, the English version of which was developed by us.

Mentoring: The Reward

No fewer than 2,000 primary school children have passed through the caring hands of our mentors in the last 10 years. The love and care of our mentors

have not gone unrewarded. Here, we attempt to capture the joy and fulfi lment felt by our mentors as they make an impact on the lives of their mentees. For them, that was reward enough.

Examples, there are many; but space constraints allow just a few.

Khemah By P S Chan

Khemah was a fairly tall and well-built Indian girl in Primary 5 at First Toa Payoh Primary School when I, as a new mentor, fi rst stepped into the Mentoring Class

Even before I could report to my team leader on that day, I was confronted at the doorway by this Indian girl whom I had never met before. She stood before me with her arms akimbo and uttered in a very unfriendly tone, “Get lost, I don’t want you here!”

I was taken aback by such a rude remark, especially from a child who was far too young even to be my own daughter. To me the confrontation was understandable but not completely unexpected as I had heard a fair bit about it during one of the

mentor induction sessions. In fact, her attitude and behaviour made me more determined and resolute in wanting to make a difference to the lives of these disadvantaged children.

Recovering from my initial shock and keeping myself cool by pretending to be oblivious to what had just been said, I smiled and greeted her “Good afternoon.” She walked away casually glancing from the corners of her big black round eyes.

As days went by, I had to brave many such encounters, though each time the dialogue was varied and different. I tried hard to slowly win her trust and confi dence.

Today, Khemah is in Primary 6 and will soon be sitting for her Primary School Leaving Examination. Her attitude towards me and the rest of the mentors has improved considerably. She has become more friendly and sociable. During the recent excursion to Changi Airport Terminal 3, she even volunteered to be the placard-bearer for the group. The teachers and mentors were surprised that she had changed for the better and had improved both in her academic performance as well as social behaviour.

Have we, as mentors, made an impact in her life and the lives of many other unfortunate children? I sincerely believe we have, but the true answer can only come from Khemah herself when she grows up to be an adult in years to come. Meanwhile, we will continue to strive and make the world a better place to live in, especially for those children placed under our charge.

A Mother ImpressedBy Felicia Ang

Student Tan Kin Lek was in Primary 4 in 2007 when he fi rst joined our RSVP Mentoring Programme. Although his behaviour is now good and his studies have greatly

improved, he continues to stay in our Mentoring Programme as he enjoys it. Kin Lek was scoring above average marks in most of his subjects by the end of the year. His mother, Mrs Tan, was not keen for Kin Lek to continue in the Programme as she did not think he needed it any more.

In early 2008 when we had a “Meet the Parents” session, Mrs Tan came to visit. Meeting most of the mentors and understanding RSVP’s and the Programme’s objectives, she was impressed by such a worthy cause. Mrs Tan thanked the mentors for volunteering their time and services so that her son and other children could benefi t from this Programme. In fact Mrs Tan felt motivated and expressed her interest in joining the Programme when she has the time. (Mrs Tan is a working mother)

We are glad to have met Mrs Tan and look forward to her joining RSVP in the near future.

Patience. LoveBy Dr Paul Sim

The catchy line “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get” from the movie “Forrest Gump” underscores my mentoring life.

Possibly my other fellow mentors’ mentoring lives as well.

Take the example of a young Primary 4 Chinese girl at Yio Chu Chang Primary School who was constantly using deliberate words of protest; and the young lad from the same school who kept my fellow mentors and me exceptionally alert with his physical display of anger at the slightest provocation.

Through patience, perspiration and love I succeeded in turning them around. From a stubborn protestor to a sweet-natured Miss Universe; from the angry lad to perhaps a new ‘Chow Yuen Fatt’.

One particular mentee always loved to disappear from our Mentoring class. Many people would have given up on him but not us mentors. We succeeded, though not without much effort. Positive comments from the school tuck-shop vendors about this changed boy were indeed a testimony.

Lunar New Year Party

What’s up with Gavel Club?

Our Christmas party held on 20 Dec 2008 had them all and not forgetting the exchange of gifts. But due to space constraints, 65 members were present at the

party, including invited guests. The occasion was graced by the President, Dr Philbert Chin and the 2nd Vice-President, Mr Loke Ho Yong.

The party would not have been complete without games and prizes to take home. It also had karaoke and line dance performances; the latter led by Mr Richard Ng. The Christmas lunch was superb to say the least!
