RSS October 2017 NEWSLETTER
INTERIM REPORTS … OCTOBER 23-27
Interim reports will be sent home to all students the week of October 23 -27. Please
note that reports may take various forms (hard copy via student agenda, e-mail, Fresh
Grade, Edmodo etc.). On Wednesday November 1st and Thursday November 2nd, all
RSS students will be dismissed at 11:55AM to allow for parent-student-teacher
interviews to take place. Please look for information from your child’s teacher
regarding the format for interims and parent-student-teacher interviews. Parents,
please contact your son/daughter’s teacher (s), if you wish to request an interview. All
bussing times have been adjusted to accommodate our early dismissal dates.

AFTER SCHOOL PROCEDURES … JUST A REMINDER!
Students are expected to go straight home after school unless their
parent/caregiver is outside supervising them. Please ensure that your
child knows “the plan,” for what to do/where to go/who is picking them
up after school? Students should only be using the school phone in case
of emergency. All play-dates should be arranged prior to coming to school
or after your child has arrived home.

ATHLETICS @ RSS
Cross-Country What a great season of cross-country running! We had over 70 kids participating in the elementary meet and a very strong Gr. 7-9 team participating in the West Kootenay league! Special thank-you to all of our coaches! Ms. McKinnon, Ms. Thomas, Ms. Kuhn and Mme. McKenzie!
Field Hockey Our grade 8/9 JR Girls Field Hockey team had a great season! We traveled to Osooyos, Chilliwack and Castlegar for tournaments! We were undeafted in Chilliwack, we won 9-0 vs. Mt. Slesse, 4-0 vs. LVR and 5-0 vs West View Secondary! Great season girls, very excited to have field hockey back at RSS! Special thanks to our coach … Ms. Armour!
Volleyball Practices have started for grades 6-9 Volleyball! It’s not too late to join. See Mr. Kinghorn or Ms. McKinnon for details and information!
Basketball Basketball season will officially begin towards the end of November.

DRESS FOR SUCCESS!!
The seasons are a changin’ … it’s getting colder, wetter and we’re secretly
prayin; for snow! Time to dig out the boots, gloves and jackets! We go
OUTSIDE during all our breaks before, during and after school. Appropriate
outside dress makes all the difference!

NEWS FROM YOUR Parent Advisory Council
PARENT INFO. NIGHTS:
Octobers Guest Speaker Kristi Crowe, gave a really interesting and excellent presentation that
helped parents to understand how teachers are teaching spelling and grammar in the current
curriculum. This is very different from what we have been doing the last 50 years.

Gord Smith will be our guest speaker, he is our Rossland Representative on the SD20 Board of
Education.
Next Evening PAC meeting : Thursday, November 9th. Will commence following our guest
speaker. Stay for as long or a little time as you can!
Parents of Current Grade 7 students, and Future Gr. 7 Parents
(to all parents interested):
RSS remains a K-9 School English, with Late French Immersion (LFI) Gr. 6-9, until the district
changes it. Bill Ford, Super Intendant of Schools for SD20 has indicated that we can continue to
offer English Grade 8 at RSS if there is enough interest, as well as Grade 9 in the future if the
numbers are there. Crowe is very full and will be looking at getting portable classrooms for next
year.
We believe that RSS can offer your children a quality and comparable educational experience in
Grade 8 and 9. It is partly our role as the PAC to inform you of the facts so that you and your
children can make the best informed decision.
We would like to start by gathering ANY and ALL of your questions that you and your children
might have in regards to staying at RSS or going to Crowe. Ask anything? Academics, Electives,
bussing, Sports, Arts, Drama, Leadership trips, band, social (dances) Teachers, class
configurations? Lets work through all of the info. Please email questions to [email protected]
FOOD STORE
There is tons of really amazing fresh food available at the food store. The RSS PAC has doubled
the hours of our food store person to increase quality menu choices. Salads, fruit cups, fresh
baked muffins, sandwiches, wraps and more.

Thursdays - hot lunch - Soup, Chilli or Pasta
Fridays – Pizza Day (Thursdays if not school on Fridays)
Buy a $10 or $20 punch card.
Opened to grades 5-9. Currently assessing adding the Grade 4’s.
*We still require parent volunteers to sell food items. Lots of fun!!
THE LUNCH HOUR shift is from 12:25-1:10pm.
Pizza days require two volunteers.

CAFETERIA REJUVENATION PROJECT
This project is a considerable undertaking so your continued support will be much
appreciated. As the project kicks off, we are seeking any expertise in GRANT WRITING. Please
email PAC at [email protected]. We appreciated receiving the creative
feedback from the students! Keep it coming!
OUTDOOR CLASS ROOM/PLAY AREA
There's a real movement in child development to provide things like logs to encourage creativity
and industry. Check out google images 'loose parts' or see a few examples in the article below.

If anyone has a special interest in this area/project there is an allotted amount of funds and
support for it, but we require a keen person or persons to help to continue developing this area!

GIFT WRAP FUNDRAISER - Dead Line October 20th
We know gift giving season seems so far away but this fundraiser is too good
not to try… DFS gives at least 40% of sales back to RSS! So, if you’re planning
to buy some Christmas/gift wrap anyway, it would be lovely if you could
support our school through this BC company. Order online only by Friday,
October 20. Order pick up is in the RSS foyer on Friday, November 24, 2-6pm.

ROSSLAND SUMMIT SCHOOL IS A PEANUT AND ALLERGY AWARE
SCHOOL: FOODS CONTAINING TREE NUTS ARE NOT TO BE CONSUMED
ON SCHOOL PROPERTY.
Within our school community there are several students who have a potentially
life-threatening allergy (anaphylaxis) to foods, predominantly to peanuts and tree
nuts (eg. almond, cashew, hazelnut, pistachio).
In consultation with Interior Health, we feel the best way to reduce the risk of
accidental exposure to these students is to respectfully ask for the co-operation
of the parents/guardians within RSS to:
A: Not send peanut butter or products with peanuts or tree nuts listed in the
ingredients.
B: Encourage your child to respect the severity of the situation, which in some
cases is life- threatening.

C: PARENTS! If you decide to send in treats (birthdays etc.) you MUST notify
your child’s teacher in advance!
