The Goodness in My Existence
(A Reflection on Genesis 1-3)
Recently, I read about this British greatest living theoretical physicist and cosmologistStephen Hawking proposed and scientifically proved from his Theory of Everything that There
is no need for a God for the universe to exist. He said that universe can self-create for there is
such thing such gravity, that out of pure energy from this massive gravity, matter is formed and so
the universe. This theory is also apparent to Einsteins famous equation E = mc2. Hawkings proof
was rather complex but really brilliant one that the human mind could ever achieved. But this does
not shatter my faith; on the contrary, it deepens it. How?
After reading the first three chapters of the book of Genesis, I asked myself this ultimate
metaphysical question, Why is there something rather than nothing? (This question refutesHawkings claim.) This question also entails several questions about me like, why am I here,
whats my purpose of being here, to where I came from and to where am I going In my reading
of the first three chapters, I noticed a phase that had really struck me, until now. It says, and
God saw it was good. It appeared six times in the bible, signifying six days of Gods labor
according to the Genesis. It tells me that everything was indeed good. Every creations great and
small, around me and within me including myself was innately good. With this, I ask myself again
if everything was good, then where does evil came from? Going through the book, I realize how
special humans are, among Gods creations. God creates us in his own image and likeness. He
gave us dominance over the other creations, and most of all, He gave us freewill. By the gift of
freewill, I am free to choose the right or wrong, good or evil. But sometimes I abused the freedom
that God had given me, because I often choose evil from good. Thus, evil does not really comes
from God, its from my being disobedient.
Now, Hawkings theory has deepened my faith for the reason that it helps me appreciate
the goodness in my existence through my purpose, my destination and my life itself. First, my
purpose of being, is a respond from Gods calling; the call for procreation and stewardship.
Second, my destination is towards God to become one with my Creator in eternity. Lastly, it is my
very own life that I come to know the major lesson that Genesis has imparted me; that Life as the
highest good, comes from the very source of it-the breath of God. So as all things comes from
Him, and that everything must be offered back to Him for He is the very beginning and the very
end. Asking the why of my existence is not anymore important, what really matters is only by
realizing how God loves us.
