Wide range of functions for many application areas

Detection and analysis of all types of interfering signalsThe R&S®ESMD can quickly locate all types of interfering signals. If the frequency range is not precisely known, the fast panorama scan can be used to find the interfering sig-nal. The signal is then subjected to more detailed analysis in the fixed frequency mode (FFM). The multifunctional IF panorama and its versatile setting options allows users to perform a powerful and more in-depth analysis.

Demodulation of signals with bandwidths of up to 20 MHzDue to the wide demodulation bandwidth (20 MHz) the R&S®ESMD can even demodulate wideband signals, e.g. all emissions in the ATC band simultaneously or analog TV transmitters. The TV picture (in bitmap format) and the audio can be used for positive identification of the trans-mitter. The data that is gathered is available on different interfaces in digital format and to some extent in analog format.

Signal analysis with classification, demodulation and decoding of digital transmission techniques (optional)The R&S®ESMD can internally demodulate analog modu-lated signals. For use in analyzing digitally modulated sig-nals, Rohde & Schwarz developed the R&S®GX430 analysis software. After it is installed on a PC, this software pro-cesses the digital I/Q data arriving from the receiver via LAN. The result is a compact and very powerful system for signal analysis applications.

Precise direction finding of emissions (with R&S®ESMD-DF direction finder upgrade kit)When equipped with the R&S®ESMD-DF direction finder upgrade kit, the R&S®ESMD becomes a direction finder for the frequency range from 20 MHz to 3 GHz (optional 300 kHz to 6 GHz). The bearings are calculated using a fast Fourier transform (FFT) within the set panorama band-width.

Internal and external storage and replay of dataThe R&S®ESMD enables the user to record and replay digital I/Q data as well as RF and IF spectra internally and externally.

Even in its basic configuration, the R&S®ESMD of-fers more than a normal receiver. This is due to its wide range of functions. The available options can turn the R&S®ESMD into an integrated and very compact all-in-one solution for radio detection, radiomonitoring and radiolocation that is capable of handling practically any imaginable task.

Panorama scan for fast spectrum monitoring with small resolution bandwidthsThe panorama scan function of the R&S®ESMD allows extremely fast spectrum monitoring with scan speeds of up to 100 GHz/s even with small resolution bandwidths. An optional expansion is available to increase the realtime bandwidth to 80 MHz, boosting the scan speed to 300 GHz/s. As a result, the probability of intercept is extremely high even for very short signals.

Reliable detection and analysis of wideband signalsThe wide realtime bandwidth of 20 MHz (optional 80 MHz) enables reliable detection and analysis of wideband sig-nals. Even in the fixed frequency mode (FFM), this helps ensure a higher likelihood of detecting low probability of intercept (LPI) signals such as bursts, radar pulses and frequency-agile signals (frequency hoppers).

service under investigation. As a result, each point in the spectrum is always tuned to the center of the respective channel.

The edge steepness of the resolution filter in the spec-trum can be set to AUTO, NORMAL, NARROW or SHARP, which significantly improves the separation of adjacent channels.

Polychrome display for detection and analysis of short-duration signalsIn histogram mode, the IF spectrum is displayed using multiple colors (polychrome IF spectrum). The duration of a signal in the spectrum is color-coded. Signals with a very short duration are displayed in blue while continu-ous signals appear in red. Overlapping short-duration and continuous signals in the spectrum can thus still be dis-tinguished and displayed when this is no longer possible with conventional display modes such as MAXHOLD and AVERAGE. Another display mode provided with the poly-chrome IF spectrum makes it possible to measure pulse lengths.

Video panoramaUsing the video panorama, the spectrum of the demodu-lated signal is displayed. This can be used, for example, to display subcarriers in FM signals (pilot tone, RDS carriers). The AM2, FM2 and I/Q2 modes enable the user to measure signal parameters such as the baud rate and chip rate (for DSSS signals) that are relevant in digital methods.

Comprehensive spectrum analysis with IF panorama and video panoramaIF panorama with a span from 1 kHz to 20 MHz (optional 80 MHz)The receiver is equipped with an IF panorama (FFT pan-orama) to enable more in-depth analysis of the signal spectrum and signal environment. The current receive fre-quency is at the center of the spectrum display. The span can be set between 1 kHz and 20 MHz (optional 80 MHz), allowing optimal adaptation to the current task at hand. The MINHOLD, MAXHOLD and AVERAGE modes are also possible, allowing an even broader scope of applications.

Two operating modes are available for spectrum display: In AUTO mode, the FFT length is constant. In manual mode, it is variable. Here, the frequency resolution of the spectrum display can be selected from among 35 differ-ent values. The benefit is that the frequency resolution can be adapted exactly to the channel spacing used by a radio

signals with a low frequency of

appearance are visible.

Comprehensive scanning capabilities

Scanning of a frequency range with a fixed chan-nel spacing (frequency scan)Using the frequency scan (FSCAN) function, a user-defin-able frequency range can be scanned in equidistant steps. The step size can be set as required. The receiver checks each channel to see whether it is occupied.

FSCAN is designed especially for monitoring radio services that use a fixed channel (frequency) spacing.

Scanning of stored frequencies (memory scan)The R&S®ESMD has 10000 memory locations (channels). A complete data set can be assigned to each memory lo-cation. Each data set can include the frequency as well as settings for the bandwidth, demodulation mode, detector type, etc.

In the memory scan (MSCAN), the selected channels are scanned in sequence and checked for occupancy. This type of scan is particularly useful for scanning individual frequencies that do not have a fixed channel spacing or for periodically scanning frequency blocks.

The suppress function enables the user to suppress fre-quencies in the FSCAN mode and also in MSCAN mode.

Fast scanning of a user-definable frequency range (panorama scan)The panorama scan (PSCAN) enables the R&S®ESMD to perform a high-speed scan of a user-definable frequency range. It thus provides a fast overview of spectrum occu-pancy. Any changes caused by illegal radio services, inter-ferences, temporary emissions, etc. can be immediately detected. A marker is used to quickly tune the receiver to a signal of interest for demodulation and analysis purposes.

One special feature of the panorama scan is its ability to deliver fast scan speeds with small resolution bandwidths and thus outstanding sensitivity. The R&S®ESMD can at-tain scan speeds of up to 100 GHz/s (up to 300 GHz/s with the 80 MHz option) with a 100 kHz resolution bandwidth. A total of 24 different resolution bandwidths are available.

If the differential mode is activated during a panorama scan, the current spectrum is saved as a reference and any deviations from the reference spectrum are displayed. New or changed signals become clearly visible, and dis-play of permanent emissions is suppressed.

The RF spectrum panorama scan

provides a fast overview of the fre-

quency range of interest along with

important insights into the different

signals that are present.

Comprehensive measurements in line with ITU recommendationsUsing the R&S®ESMD-IM option, the receiver can be equipped with an extensive range of ITU-compliant mea-surement techniques. These include:

Frequency and frequency offset in line with ITU- ❙R SM.377 1)

Modulation in line with ITU-R SM.328 ❙Spectrum occupancy in line with ITU-R SM.182/SM.328 ❙(using external PC software such as R&S®ARGUS-IT)Bandwidth in line with ITU-R SM.443 ❙Analysis of digital standards in line with ITU-R SM.1600 ❙(using the R&S®GX430 analysis software)

Field strength measurements in line with ITU-R SM.378 are already enabled in the base unit.

All measurements are performed automatically and si-multaneously. This saves valuable measurement time and enables very efficient deployment of personnel and test equipment.

Using the built-in decoder for the radio data service (RDS), the RDS signal is demodulated and decoded and its con-tents are displayed. Messages such as the station name, station code and text transmissions are visible at a glance.

Performance and measurement techniques in line with ITU recommendationsThe R&S®ESMD meets the ITU recommendations for monitoring receivers and direction finders. In many areas, the recommended values are even clearly ex-ceeded. For example, the R&S®ESMD provides sig-nificantly higher large-signal immunity (higher inter-cept points, lower phase noise) than the minimum values recommended by the ITU.

Extensive preselectionThe extensive preselection capabilities also minimize the signal sum load at the receiver input. In other words, the only signals that pass the preselection are those within the currently active filter passband. Signals at frequencies out-side this passband are suppressed.

The preselection is implemented up to 1500 MHz using tracking bandpass filters, while suboctave filters are used up to 3.6 GHz. In the SHF range up to 26.5 GHz, a track-ing filter is also activated, while combined highpass and lowpass filters are available in the range from 9 kHz to 32 MHz.

Separate receive paths for HF, VHF/UHF and SHFIn the basic version, the R&S®ESMD covers the frequency range from 20 MHz to 3.6 GHz. Additional tuners can be used to extend the frequency range downwards (9 kHz to 32 MHz) and upwards (3.6 GHz to 26.5 GHz). The division into individual tuners makes it possible to optimize their respective receive characteristics. This is a major benefit that distinguishes the R&S®ESMD from multiband tuners as those used in spectrum analyzers, for example. This makes the receiver particularly well suited to receiving sig-nals from the antenna despite the presence of interfering signals with a high field strength.

Highest linearity even for dense signal occupancyThe R&S®ESMD is designed for use in scenarios that place very high demands on any receiver's characteristics. For example, the R&S®ESMD is capable of processing a large number of strong signals in its receive bandwidth (e.g. at airports) without generating unwanted signals (e.g. intermodulation products and harmonics).

Excellent receive characteristics

FFT spectrum calculationAll spectra are calculated as FFT in realtime in the R&S®ESMD. The result is an extremely fine resolution and high sensitivity along with a simultaneously high scan rate (panorama scan) or minimal calculation time (IF pan-orama).

Since the two panorama functions are calculated inde-pendently (using their own individual settings), a mere keystroke (or command) is all it takes to switch from a panorama spectrum to an IF panorama or vice versa. This is essential for monitoring requirements which cannot be met by T&M instruments (e.g. spectrum analyzers).

In addition, a gap-free and dynamically variably overlap-ping FFT is implemented in the IF panorama. This means that no signal is ever lost and the receiver is never “blind”. This is very beneficial since even extremely narrow pulses can be detected with 100 % probability of intercept.

Spectrum and waterfall displayAlso a waterfall display is available for all spectra. This is especially important when it is necessary to detect signals in push-to-talk (PTT) radio traffics. While the signals disap-pear quickly from the IF panorama, they are still visible as a line in the waterfall.

Perfect signal analysis in realtime20 MHz realtime bandwidth, optional 80 MHzThe R&S®ESMD has a realtime bandwidth of 20 MHz (op-tional 80 MHz). This enables the user to analyze broad-band signals and the signal environment of up to 20 MHz (80 MHz). In addition, the I/Q baseband data is available on the corresponding interfaces.

34 IF filters from 100 Hz to 20 MHz for demodula-tion and measurementsTo process the different signals with an optimum signal-to-noise ratio, the receiver is equipped with 34 IF filters pro-viding bandwidths from 100 Hz to 20 MHz. Demodulation with output of the digital baseband and video data can be performed at all bandwidths (max. 9 kHz for SSB and CW).

Results of the modulation and bandwidth

measurements are available at a glance.

Digital down convertersWhen equipped with the R&S®ESMD-DDC option, the re-ceiver has four additional digital down converters in addi-tion to the wideband demodulation path. These converters function entirely in parallel within the realtime bandwidth and can be parameterized independently of one another. Each of these digital down converters offers the AM, FM, PULSE, I/Q, LSB, USB and CW demodulation modes as well as a comprehensive set of 25 IF bandwidths from 100 Hz to 1 MHz (100 Hz to 9 kHz for LSB, USB, CW), au-tomatic gain control (AGC) and a squelch function. More-over, each DDC provides the complex baseband (I/Q), the associated signal level and an audio signal.

“True” realtime processingThe R&S®ESMD makes use of a special realtime operating system which runs on a processor designed to support realtime operations. Windows systems are not used in the R&S®ESMD because they have no realtime capabilities.

The Windows XP operating system (model .03) installed on the front-panel computer is used exclusively to make parameter settings, manage interfaces and display results.

Special realtime features include gap-free signal process-ing and data output in realtime.

Demodulation of analog modulated signalsAnalog modulated signals are demodulated in the receiver. Due to the wide demodulation bandwidth, even extremely wideband signals can be processed such as analog TV sig-nals or all carriers in the ATC band simultaneously. The de-modulated signal (audio, video) is available in analog and digital formats (via the LAN interface).

Separate paths for IF panorama and demodula-tion/measurementThe R&S®ESMD has two independent paths for signal pro-cessing. The span of the IF panorama and the parameters for the measurement path (IF filters, demodulation mode, level measurement/evaluation, etc.) can thus be set inde-pendently of one another. As a result, the user has access to a wide IF display and can, at the same time, benefit from an optimum demodulation bandwidth.

Unlike most comparable instruments (e.g. spectrum analyzers), the R&S®ESMD does not perform level measurements in the IF spectrum. Instead, these mea-surements are performed in the demodulation/mea-surement path, ensuring a precise measurement of the signal level even for very short pulses.

The four DDCs are user-definable

within the IF bandwidth.

Precise direction finding of emissions (with R&S®ESMD-DF direction finder upgrade kit)

Fast, reliable direction finding due to high DF accuracyIn the VHF/UHF range the R&S®ESMD with its direc-tion finding function uses the correlative interferometer DF method. In contrast to simple amplitude comparison methods, the instrument therefore offers significantly higher, class A/B DF accuracy in line with ITU SMH 2002.

This high DF accuracy relies on the precise measurement of the phase angles between the reference antenna ele-ment and the other elements. Measuring the phase differ-ence between two signals normally requires two coherent receive paths. For this reason, most interferometer direc-tion finders on the market use at least two receivers. In the R&S®ESMD, the two receive paths are coherently linked in the DF antenna using a patented method. As a result, there is no need for a second interception processing channel that is customarily found in interferometer direc-tion finders.

In the HF range, the Watson-Watt direction finding meth-od is used. The special advantage of this method is that small DF antennas can be deployed. Accordingly, the R&S®ESMD with its DF function is also very suitable for mobile direction finding in this frequency range.

Direction finding up to 6 GHzTogether with the R&S®ESMD-SHF option and the R&S®ADD075 UHF/SHF DF antenna, the R&S®ESMD de-livers precise DF results up to 6 GHz. Until now, this was possible only up to 3 GHz. For the first time ever, a com-pact instrument thus takes highly accurate bearings of sig-nals above 3 GHz such as:

WLAN ❙WiMAX™ ❙Microwave links ❙

The DF function of the R&S®ESMD fully corresponds to that of the R&S®DDF255 digital direction finder (product brochure: PD 5213.9728.11, data sheet: PD 5213.9728.22).

Wideband direction finding with a realtime bandwidth of up to 20 MHzIf the R&S®ESMD is upgraded into a direction finder, it can take the bearings of all signals in a wide frequency range of up to 20 MHz. This is due to fast signal processing. The bearing is calculated and displayed simultaneously for each signal. Wideband direction finding offers a variety of applications and benefits:

All frequency channels in the aeronautical or maritime ❙frequency bands can be displayed and their bearings taken simultaneouslyAll FM broadcast channels can be displayed and their ❙bearings taken simultaneouslyThe bearings of signals with wide bandwidths such ❙as DAB and DVB-T can be taken with high channel resolution. The bearing is then an average value (histogram) calculated from many individual bearings. This compensates for frequency-dependent bearing fluctuationsThe bearings of frequency-agile transmitters (frequency- ❙hopping and chirp transmitters) with up to 100 hops/s are reliably determined

Display of DF results.

12

Digital and analog data outputThe data is available on different interfaces in digital format and to some extent also in analog format. Consequently, the user has additional post processing and further pro-cessing alternatives. The R&S®ESMD is thus also a suitable element for comprehensive monitoring systems.

Analog via fixed interfaces:Video outputs for AM/FM or analog I and Q ❙Audio up to 12.5 kHz bandwidth ❙IF analog ❙

Multiple antenna inputsThe R&S®ESMD has five antenna inputs for HF, VHF/UHF and SHF. The inputs can be switched manually by the user or automatically by the receiver itself.

Standard interfaces for simple system integrationInternal and external data storage, also usable for replayThe receiver provides a 2 Gbyte internal memory for re-cording/storing data. Its contents can also be replayed internally. Moreover, digital data can be output in realtime via the LAN interface and recorded externally. As a result, the recording time is limited only by the capacity of the ex-ternal storage medium.

Two Gbit Ethernet interfaces (10/100/1000BaseT)To allow remote control and ensure reliable transmis-sion at high speeds (baseband data, scan data), the R&S®ESMD is equipped with two Gbit Ethernet interfaces (10/100/1000BaseT). The downward-compatible control protocol used on the LAN interfaces is compliant with the standard commands for programmable instruments (SCPI) syntax.

Rohde & Schwarz R&S®ESMD Wideband Monitoring Receiver 13

Solid investment protection, low operating costs

Expandable platformThe receiver is also prepared to meet future requirements in the fields of receiver and signal analysis engineering. Free slots for hardware expansions and spare capability for signal processing allow the receiver to be optimally adapted to new tasks. Integration into new or existing sys-tems is simple since the protocol used on the remote-con-trol interface is compatible with other receivers from Rohde & Schwarz.

Built-in test equipmentA number of test points in the receiver are continuously monitored by the built-in test equipment. Additionally, it is possible to perform a dynamic test of the entire inter-ception processing channel. Deviations from the nominal values appear as an error message on the user interface. A defective module is thus reliably identified.

Short downtime during service and repairSince extensive recalibrations after a module replacement are eliminated, the downtime is reduced to a minimum.

Worldwide serviceRohde & Schwarz has a global presence and a dedicated service network in over 70 countries. This means that an instrument can be maintained or repaired on site or in the country itself. As a result, transportation, as well as costs and downtimes are minimized.

112 test points are used to continuously

monitor the modules in the receiver. Any

deviations from the nominal values are

reported immediately.

14

Finding and analyzing interfering signalsDue to the increase in transmitter density and the problem of industrial interference (man-made noise), detecting and analyzing radio interference is becoming very important. Such tasks therefore require receiver characteristics and functions to ensure that the interference source can be lo-cated very quickly, a crucial aspect in security-critical radio traffics (e.g. aeronautical radio).

Its compact design and wide range of special functions make the R&S®ESMD an ideal choice for detecting all types of radio interference. To master these tasks, the receiver includes special functions such as selectable measurement time and continuous (averaged) or periodic (maximum value upon expiration of measurement time) level output. Since these functions are also effective in the RF spectrum (panorama scan), even nonperiodic or frequency-agile interferers can be easily detected. Such interferers are otherwise very difficult to detect due to their irregular appearance in a quickly changing spectrum.

The FFM mode using the IF panorama performs in-depth analysis of the interfering signal or of the impaired service. The color-coded presentation provided by the polychrome spectrum is very useful since it helps to bring out pulsed interfering signals. Continuous signals that are producing interference which might be hidden behind pulsed wanted signals such as GSM can also be reliably detected in this color-coded spectrum.

Application examplesDesigned for use in extensive monitoring systems (stationary and mobile)Even in its basic version, the R&S®ESMD meets all the requirements placed on receivers in extensive (e.g. na-tionwide) monitoring systems. Moreover, it is possible to expand the receiver to handle different tasks. One particu-larly attractive option is to turn the receiver into a direction finder, producing a highly compact and extremely power-ful instrument for radiomonitoring and direction finding. For mobile applications in vehicles, the optional DC power supply is very useful since it allows the R&S®ESMD to be connected directly to the vehicle's supply system.

For ITU monitoring systems, the external R&S®ARGUS PC software is recommended (data sheet: PD 5213.9657.32) while the external R&S®RAMON PC software is available for authorities accomplishing governmental tasks (product brochure: PD 5214.3152.12).

Impaired ATC band: The interfering

signals are not visible in the normal

IF spectrum.

Impaired ATC band: The interfering sig-

nal is clearly visible in the polychrome

IF spectrum (in this case a wideband

interfering signal). Due to the settable

switch-off delay, the high activity in the

spectrum is also easier to recognize.

Page 15: R&S®ESMD Wideband Monitoring Receiver Product Brochure ... · The radiomonitoring specialist: versatile, fast and accurate. 2 R&S®ESMD Wideband Monitoring Receiver ... The panorama

Rohde & Schwarz R&S®ESMD Wideband Monitoring Receiver 15

Detection of burst signals, radar emissionsDue to the receiver's wide realtime bandwidth of 20 MHz (optional 80 MHz) and functions such as overlapping FFT and polychrome IF display, even very narrow burst such as those emitted by radar equipment can be detected and analyzed. The benefits of overlapping FFT become clearly apparent with this kind of pulses. Unlike conventional FFT which is not capable of reliably detecting short signals be-tween the individual frames, overlapping FFT ensures that nothing is lost. This type of FFT calculation is practically the only way to ensure 100 % reliable detection.

To display the detected signal, the IF spectrum can be switched to MAXHOLD mode. However, if continuous signals are also present in the spectrum in addition to the short-duration signal, the MAXHOLD display will fail. It is then no longer possible to distinguish the signal behav-ior since all signals are represented with their maximum value. In this case, the polychrome IF spectrum is useful since only this function allows the user to make a clear distinction between short-term and continuous signals. The color-coded presentation makes it possible to find the short-duration signal of interest quickly and reliably.

Parameters such as the pulse duration can be measured using the PULSE measurement mode provided in the IF panorama. To perform accurate level measurements for short pulses, a wide demodulation/measurement band-width is required. Here again, the R&S®ESMD is very well equipped with bandwidths of up to 20 MHz.

Detection of frequency-agile signals (hoppers)The wide realtime bandwidth and high scan rates of the receiver ensure reliable detection even of signals with quickly varying frequencies. Even the most advanced hop-pers with extremely high hop rates are detected. If the receiver is in panorama scan mode, the MAXHOLD func-tion can be used to quickly display the occupied frequency range of the transmitter.

If the hopper moves about within the realtime bandwidth of the receiver, all hops will be contained in realtime in the digital baseband data that is output on the LAN interface. This data can be processed externally almost in realtime or recorded for subsequent offline analysis, e.g. using the ex-ternal R&S®AMLAB PC software.

Used by organizations with governmental tasksThe R&S®ESMD provides outstanding features to meet the needs of these organizations. Possible applications include scanning, demodulation, analysis and interception of sig-nal content. There is hardly any task this receiver cannot handle.

The extraordinarily fast search function and comprehen-sive signal analysis capabilities allow reliable detection of unknown signals in a minimum of time. Supporting information to ward off potential dangers are also deliv-ered quickly and efficiently. Recurring events can be im-mediately identified after they are saved in special data-bases. For comprehensive monitoring tasks of this kind, Rohde & Schwarz offers the external R&S®RAMON PC soft-ware.

Selective call analysisThe R&S®ESMD-SL option is available for decoding selec-tive call methods. The following selective call methods are supported: CCIR1, CCIR7, CCITT, EEA, EIA, EURO, DCS, DTMF, CTCSS, NATEL, VDEW, ZVEI1 and ZVEI2.

Analysis of digital signals with external softwareThe R&S®GX430 analysis software is available for analyzing complex signals (data sheet: PD 5213.8321.32). This soft-ware has a number of functions for signal detection and analysis such as classification (detection of the modulation mode), vector analysis, bit stream analysis and decoding. Using the “Automatic Search and Classify” function, any desired frequency range can be scanned and the signals detected in this range will be automatically classified. For online analysis, digital data is transferred in realtime via LAN from the receiver to the PC. For offline analysis, the software accesses data that was recorded internally in the receiver or externally.

Using the R&S®GX430-IS option (data sheet: PD 5213.9834.31), users can perform measurements for digital standards (DAB, DVB) in line with ITU recommen-dation ITU-R SM.1600.

The R&S®ESMD in combination with R&S®GX430 offers an outstanding price/performance ratio.
