Implementing Network Data Acquisition

Many devices that normally connect to a RS232 port are now available with TCP/IP network connectivity. You canalso use inexpensive “Serial Device Servers” to connect RS232 devices directly to a network.

By connecting RS232 devices to a network, it does not matter where the device is located and any other PC in thenetwork can communicate with the device. With the Internet and wireless networks, you can even communicatewith a device located anywhere in the world just as if the device were plugged directly into your PC.

This configuration is the perfect solution when you need to install an instrument somewhere that would be diffi-cult or impossible to have a PC connected directly to the device. It is also ideal when you want multiple PCs to beable to communicate with a device without having to move or disconnect it. Once the device is connected to thenetwork, everyone else on the network can communicate with it.

TCP-Wedge is designed specifically to communicate with networked instruments. It performs the exact samefunction as WinWedge Pro except instead of communicating over a RS232 port, TCP-Wedge communicatesthrough a TCP/IP network port.

TCP-Com is a software based RS232 to TCP/IP converter.TCP-Com allows any of the serial ports on your PC to sendand receive data directly over any TCP/IP network. UseTCP-Com to turn a PC into a multi-port “Serial DeviceServer” so that you can connect any RS232 serial devicedirectly to a TCP/IP network and communicate with thatdevice from any other workstation in the same network oracross the Internet.

TCP-Com can also create “Virtual” RS232 serial portsthat are actually connections to a TCP/IP port. Thisallows you to use any existing serial communicationssoftware to send and receive data across a TCP/IP network.
