A couple of clubs. Two eras. Diff erent results but equally important statements in each.
That’s the tale for modern rivals West Perth and Subiaco this week.
The Falcons and Lions are celebrating a success of seasons past. Ironically, the cherished achievements came at the cost of the other.
For West Perth it is time to recognise the 2003 premiership line-up.
At Subiaco the fans are honouring the 1973 flag-winning team.
However, the titles were worth more than a rusty old trophy and a couple of pats on the back.
There were important messages for club, competition and the game in those wins. And Ross Lewis tasks a brief snapshot on the significance of two premierships of yesteryear.

At last!
Die-hard Subiaco fans had waited 49 years for this moment. And how they celebrated.
In his brilliant chronicle on the Subiaco Football Club Ken Spillman cleverly painted the picture of what it was like to be among the Lions faithful when the club broke its premiership drought in 1973.
“Stories would be told about this day, and about the night that followed for many years to come,” Spillman wrote.
“There was the bomb hoax that kept members and supporters out of Subiaco’s clubrooms for an hour after the match …. There was the party in the car park. There were parties within parties and parties on the way to other parties.”
Subiaco had long been the WAFL (then WANFL) easybeats. No more. Not only did the 1973 win do so much for the Lions at the time but the legacy continued for decades through the service to the club of Neil Randall, Peter Metropolis, Brian Sierakowski and Fred Davenport – as well as their offspring.
Dennis Blair starred in defence, Mike Fitzpatrick, now the AFL chairman, was outstanding in the ruck and with Peter Featherby in strong form, Subiaco gained the ascendancy over West Perth.
But it was the impact of Ross Smith, the Brownlow medallist from Victoria lured to Perth to study, who had the biggest impact when it counted.
Teammate and journalist Austin Robertson later wrote of Smith, “The guy is like Clark Kent. But instead of Superman, out comes a 160lb (73kg) cross between Jack the Ripper and a kamikaze pilot”.
Without the 1973 victory it is difficult to think Subiaco could have survived tough times in the later part of the decade.
The Lions came through and have celebrated more success.
However, the stories from the team of 40 years ago have a very special place in the Maroons’ changerooms. And the tales recited at the reunion last week got just a little bit bigger.

It might have been the third flag West Perth had snared since moving to the northern suburbs but there was something a little more special about the 2003 premiership.
The result of that season’s grand final was the culmination of 10 years of hard work to develop the playing stocks of a new area for the Falcons. And it served to strengthen the bond between the old “Garlic Munchers” from Leederville with the future in Joondalup.
There was little talk about name changes for the red and the blue following this triumph. Funny how success can narrow sporting divides.
Todd Curley, Brett Cousins, Clayton Lassock, Jason Salecic and Kepler Bradley came from the Falcons’ fresh heartland and would all finish their careers as loyal servants of the club. In the case of Bradley and Salecic, they’re still making a contribution when available for duty.
This was also the start of a wonderful WAFL rivalry with Subiaco. Many of the Falcons from the northern suburbs had grown up playing against, sometimes with, some of the Lions during juniors days because the clubs shared a recruiting boundary.
Brent LeCras was outstanding across half-back in the grand final and combined with Steven Koops, Lasscock and Simon Duckworth to provide a quick-rebounding defence that also set up plenty of Falcons forward thrusts.
Troy Longmuir kicked five goals while Mark Seaby gradually got on top in the ruck.
To mark the 10-year anniversary West Perth will present each player with some wine marked under a specially struck label to honour the premiership.
The club has a few others up for auction during the festivities at Arena Joondalup in round 14.
It is apt because the efforts of the 2003 premiership team included a true West Perth spirit worth bottling.

Leading goalkicker awardJosh Smith has done what most WAFL pundits expected by returning to the lead in the race for the 2013 Bernie Naylor Medal.
Smith’s five-goal haul for East Perth against Perth last Sunday catapulted him to 35 season goals and top spot on the leading goalkickers’ list.
Swan Districts’ Tim Geappen squeezed back into the top five with six goals in round 13.
Last week’s competition leader, Perth’s Paul Bevan, managed just one goal in the previous round.

One vote was enough for Claremont’s Sam Fong to again prove he is one of the new shining lights in the WAFL.
Fong gained one vote for his effort against Peel last Saturday to establish a two-vote lead in the battle for the Combined WAFL Past Players and Officials rising star award.
But there is still a bunch of players in reach of Fong.
To be eligible players must have notched eight games or less at the start of the 2013 season and be aged 21 years or under at the end of the season.
Votes do not need to be awarded.

Player of the Year
Good form is a double-edged sword for Bradd Dalziell when it comes to the WAFL’s leading player award.
The East Fremantle midfielder again earned Osborne Park Volkswagen WAFL Player of the Year votes in the Sharks’ loss to West Perth in round 13 but his good form could encourage West Coast to recall him to AFL ranks.
And that would cost him chances to add to his total.
There was no movement atop the leaderboard and there might not be much change this week with Claremont enjoying a bye.
The winner of the Osborne Park Volkswagen WAFL Player of the Year wins a prize worth $1500.

In summer 2013, get ready for more Minion madness in Despicable Me 2.

THIS IS THE END (SONY PICTURES)“What if you were stuck in a house with your friends as the world was ending outside?” says Seth Rogen, who, with his writing and directing partner Evan Goldberg, answers that question in the new comedy This Is The End.
The comedy This Is The End follows six friends trapped in a house after a series of strange and catastrophic events devastate Los Angeles.
As the world unravels outside, dwindling supplies and cabin fever threaten to tear apart the friendships inside. Eventually, they are forced to leave the house, facing their fate and the true meaning of friendship and redemption.
Opens on July 4.
10 COLLECTABLESby Sean Cowan
During 2013, the Football Budget will again feature a section on WAFL memorabilia and invites you to write or email if you want more information about the football collectables you have tucked away at home.
In search of some “tinnies”
If you have a query regarding WAFL memorabilia, send photographs and/or details to Sean at [email protected] or Sean Cowan, GPO Box N1025, Perth WA, 6843. His website is at www.waflcollectables.webs.com and he also can be contacted on 0412 760 004.
Collectors owe a lot to newspapers. From the Western Mail supplements of 1934 and 1953 to the grand final team posters issued by the Sunday Times in the 1960s and 1970s, they have been responsible for producing plenty of memorabilia over the years.
In the 1960s, in particular, the Daily News produced a heap of collectables. Along with the cloth patches of 1960, 1962, 1963 and 1965, my favourites are probably the two sets of “tinnie” badges they put out in 1961 and 1964.
And they are surprisingly difficult to get hold of today.
From what I can gather, the first set of eight tinnies was issued as the newspaper’s big football promotion for 1961. Each badge was about the size of a 50-cent piece and had a very simple pin on the back.
Three years later, the Daily issued an identical set of badges. Well, they were identical in every way except for one – this time they were only the size of a five-cent piece.
Sometimes, the smaller 1964 badges were sold with matching team-coloured ribbons attached.
But badges from both sets turn up very rarely today. In fact, I have just one of each set in my collection, the small 1964 Swans badge coming to me recently from Jeff of Mukinbudin.
I know that a South Fremantle collector has six of the 1961 large badges, while another collector has three from each set.
While I have a few photographs of the badges, I don’t have any colour photos of the large 1964 West Perth badge nor the small 1964 badges for
Claremont, East Fremantle, Perth, Subiaco and West Perth.
Can anyone help?
An East Fremantle badge from the 1961 series sold for around $30 last year, so a set of eight from either series would likely fetch a nice sale price.
Meanwhile, I copped some light-hearted flak from one reader over my query in last week’s Budget about the set of 1980 Daily News posters.
I was able to pick out Les Fong and Graham Moss on the West Perth and Claremont posters respectively, but I wasn’t prepared to positively identify the others from just the small advertisement which I found in an old Football Budget.
Joe suggested I should find a new hobby if I can’t identify the great Barry Cable in the East Perth poster. But I wasn’t keen to go out on a limb, especially given Cable retired in 1979 and really shouldn’t have been on a 1980 poster.
Joe suggested the six players I hadn’t identified were Alan Johnson (Perth), Brian Peake (East Fremantle), Brian Douge (Subiaco), Leon Baker (Swans), Stephen Michael (South Fremantle) and Cable (East Perth).
But, I’m not so sure about some of those. At the footy last week, I discussed it with a couple of die-hard WAFL supporters, one of whom had the Fong poster on his wall as a kid and remembers buying it at Coles in Gosnells.
We ruled out Leon Baker because he didn’t join Swans until 1981. And, now that I have a photograph of the Swans poster, it appears it’s actually a clean-shaven Stan Nowotny.
It certainly looks like Douge on the Subiaco poster and Johnson on the Perth poster. I won’t rule out Cable as being the East Perth player, though it could also be Alex Hamilton. But I don’t think the port sides had Peake and Michael on their posters. It’s been suggested to me that they are actually Jim Sewell and Joe McKay.
So, does anyone have one of these posters, so we can provide some definitive answers?
This week, I’ll finish WAFL Collectables by listing a few items that Budget readers are looking to sell.
If anyone is interested, please contact me via email or phone and I can put you in touch with the seller.
First, Brad, of Ellenbrook, has a 1985 original copy of Brian Atkinson’s book West Perth Football Club 1885-1985, complete with the dust jacket, for which he is asking $45.
Raelene has a copy of The Les Fong story, which was published in 1988, and is seeking $25. She also has a copy of Bill Dempsey – A Testimony to a Champion, which was published in 1976.
Jim has some Football Registers from 1983-1986 and is happy to receive some offers.
And, last but not least, Swan Districts supporter Dean has decided to part with his much-loved 1984 Football Budget collection, which consists of 26 Budgets, including the Grand Final and State of Origin editions. He is after $100 ONO, which is pretty good value.

A one-off appearance by a favourite son lifted Claremont closer to a mammoth payday in the fi nal qualifying match of the 2013 Foxtel Cup.
The Tigers had little difficulty disposing of NEAFL team Southport, 12.8 (80) to 4.2 (26), to move into the series semi-finals.
However, the win was marked by the efforts of former West Coast player Tom Swift, who made a brief comeback to senior ranks in the mid-week match.
Swift retired from football at the end of last year to concentrate on medical studies. He has been training with the Tigers to maintain fitness and was coaxed to pull on the jumper for the Foxtel Cup clash as Claremont tried to cover injuries.
A player working his way back from an ankle complaint, Jeremy McGovern, was outstanding for the Tigers and indicated he was fit enough to resume in the league team after the club’s bye this weekend.
McGovern and Ian Richardson each kicked three goals for Claremont.
The Tigers received outstanding service from ruckman Mitch Andrews and rookie Ben Daniher.
Matthew Davies also continued his recent strong WAFL form.
Claremont, the defending Foxtel Cup champion, will head to AAMI Stadium next month for a semi-final stoush with West Adelaide.

GAME PREVIEWS
EAST PERTH V EAST FREM
Medibank Stadium
After securing its place in the top four East Perth face the very team it overtook in the standings.
With just one win from the last four games East Fremantle sits one game out of the top four, having slipped down to sixth, and will need to string some wins together to regain form.
The Sharks must show energy in their midfield after being shut down by a strong zone defence last week and again against the Royals in their round six battle.
To keep the Royals out of the game the Sharks will need to find strong cover early on for Josh Smith, Aaron Sweet out of defence, Scott Lycett and Paul Johnson, the latter two giving the Royals a tough ruck combination to combat in the centre square.
Kyle Anderson and Dean Cadwallader have also been in strong form for the Royals.
East Fremantle has got good service from Tom Howlett but has relied too much on AFL ace Bradd Dalziell to spark the team into action.
Dalziell could play his 50th league game for the Sharks.
Overall: East Perth 143 East Fremantle 181 Draw 2
WEST PERTH V SUBIACO
Arena Joondalup
A lot of hard work could be wasted if Subiaco can’t pull off a WAFL upset in the round.
The Lions produced a mid-season revival to indicate they were top-four material. That was until last week when they ran into a very efficient Swan Districts outfit.
So Subiaco sits among a gaggle of teams vying for a place in the finals spots. But because of the competition for berths, any slip-up could prove fatal.
The Falcons got some breathing space in second spot with a strong defensive effort against East Fremantle in round 13 and will be able to employ a similar strategy against the Lions.
Chris Keunen will be a key weapon for West Perth against a Subiaco ruck battery that has been valiantly led in recent matches by rookie David Madut.
With Anthony Tsalikis absent West Perth will also call on youngster Matthew Johnson for a stronger return near the goals.
Subiaco has plenty of midfield grunt. George Hampson, who moved up from the back line last week, Jason Bristow and Brett Mahoney will need to work effectively to get the Lions playing at their own speed from clearances.
Overall: West Perth 208 Subiaco 121 Draw 4
SOUTH FREM V SWAN DIST
Fremantle Oval
Swan Districts travels to the port with a high degree of confidence on the back of a two-game winning streak.
South Fremantle has shown fortitude and the ability to cut down large margins in the fourth quarter, leading to some close calls, but the Bulldogs need to be able to assert themselves early on against the black and whites to avoid having to rely on last gasp plays.
To stay in the game the Bulldogs will need to keep Swans from building momentum early on the back of their forwards.
Tim Geappen, Murray Newman and Tony Notte have shown their ability to take over games when given the opportunity so the Bulldogs will need to be able to restrict Swans’ forays into their forward 50.
The Bulldogs will rely on Paul Mugambwa, Mitch Banner and John Sgherza to make the most of their opportunities deep in the forward line.
Overall: South Fremantle 132 Swan Districts 102
PEEL V PERTH
Bendigo Bank Stadium
Perth is trying to stop a slide that is jeopardising its outstanding 2013 WAFL revival.
The Demons were one of the form teams early in the season but have since come back to the field and only hold fourth spot because of a superior percentage.
So it is time for the Perth leaders to come to the fore. The Demons have got great leadership from Paul Bevan and Brett Hodge but need more authority across the board.
Matt Tedesco, Fraser McInnes and Michael Florio have also set the example their teammates need to follow.
However, Peel has proven to be a big headache for most teams in this campaign. And the Thunder are so much stronger when playing at their Mandurah home.
The Demons will need to contend with Brendon Jones, Devin McFarlane, Matt Orzel, Tom Sheridan and Paul Bower, who have been strong when the Thunder have played at their best.
Conversely the Thunder will look to limit the effectiveness of Brennan Stack and Dene White to avoid letting the Demons take control of the game.
Overall: Peel 15 Perth 26

School footy is back and during term two and three of the primary school sporting calendar with the WAFC and the West Coast Eagles showcasing the Eagles Cup competition and Eagles Faction Football program.
Old School Favourites Back for 2013
Teams from Beeliar and Lockridge Primary Schools had the opportunity to play at Patersons Stadium.
This again reflects the increased popularity and profile of these programs. High participation numbers indicate that Eagles Faction Football shows no signs of slowing
down and the Eagles Cup has sustained its growth over the past five years.
The WA Football Commission, West Coast and BHP Billiton are totally committed to the Eagles Cup and Eagles Faction Football concepts. This partnership has always provided a clear direction for the provision of appropriate pathways for all boys and girls in safe, enjoyable and accountable environments.
School football in Western Australia is very fortunate to have such quality and passionate partners dedicated towards the ongoing growth of school-aged football that significantly contribute to the physical, psychological and social well-being of children.
With this comes the announcement that from 2013, West Coast and WAFC will strengthen their alliance of school football with the club now partnering the Year 8/9 Schoolboys Cup program.
The Year 8/9 Schoolboys Cup program was formed in 1983 and caters specifically for lower secondary schoolboys. The competition is played right across WA with the aim of producing a champion school to represent each of the nine WAFL clubs.
Around 6000 students will participate in 2013 and Secondary School Football is extremely grateful to have program partners of this caliber contributing to school football in Western Australia.

WA›s State 18s will head east next week to take on Victoria Country with the aim of notching up their fi rst Division One win of the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships.
After convincing wins over Division Two teams Tasmania and the Northern Territory, WA was defeated by Division One side Victoria Metro 15.10 (100) to 12.9 (81) last Saturday in a tough contest at Patersons Stadium.
After Vic Metro built a 30-point lead in the first quarter, WA came back in the second half and even closed to within six points in the final term.
But Metro had too many contributors. Ben Lennon kicked four goals and Mitch Honeychurch put in a best-on-ground performance.
Blaine Johnson was WA’s leading goalkicker with four, while key forwards Jonathon Marsh and Cameron McCarthy impressed again with three goals each.
Alec Waterman had 23 disposals and five tackles.

The West Australian Football Commission is pleased to announce that Lee Mack has been named The Sunday Times WA Football Volunteer of the Week.
Mack has been involved with the Edgewater Woodvale Junior Football Club for approximately six years as an Auskick coordinator, club registrar, team manager and general committee member.
She is the ‹go-to’ person for all things Edgewater Woodvale JFC related. Having coordinated Auskick for three years, she knows the game inside and out and despite having handed the reins to someone else at the end of 2011, she still finds herself called on.
Now as registrar, her duties seem to have doubled. Mack also finds time to teach new volunteers and committee members along the way.
In 2013, the Edgewater Woodvale JFC has found itself in the position of not having a president or vice president.
Although not ideal, Mack is holding the club together by taking on multiple roles as she battles to ensure that the club grows, prospers and meets all requirements.
She considered taking on the role of president, however, as all club committee members know, the role of registrar is vital to ensure the kids can take the field each week.
Mack is a paramedic by trade – a profession which includes out-of-hours shift work. On
top of this, she has a young baby and her eldest son is not only is a great footballer but also plays State basketball, which is another big commitment for the family.
At the end of the day, nothing seems too hard for Mack and everything is always done with a smile. Everyone at EWJFC hugely appreciates her efforts.
Throughout the nomination period of The Sunday Times WA Football Volunteer of the Year, the WAFC will be recognising a number of our wonderful volunteers that contribute their time to football.
To nominate a member of your club for The Sunday Times WA Football Volunteer of the Year just go to www.volunteerinfooty.com.au.

Manjimup Tigers have stamped themselves as a genuine premiership threat with a convincing 68-point thumping of cross town rivals Imperials.
Lyndon Muir showed impressive form with a nine-goal haul for Tigers, taking his season tally to 33, to lead the Lower South West Football League goal kicking ladder. Tigers were also well-served by Nathan Skraha and Jacob Miolin, while Imperials’ best were Keenan Wilson, Mitch Ipsen and Ryan Booth with four goals.
Southerners showed continued good form to overrun Bridgetown by 84-points and now are a game clear on top. Southerners ruckman Tim Lyster led a dominant display with Shane DeCampo (four goals) and former Bunbury player Corey Tomsett adding support. Brett Wilson and Tristian Bosley battled hard for the bottom of the ladder Bulldogs.
Kojonup notched its fourth win of the season with a 71-point thrashing of 2012 premiers Boyup Brook with Lee Lucev and Ashley Wallum each bagging five majors. Bayden Ried was named best, while Rhien Lloyd, Sean Barrett and Brendan Mead with three goals were good for Boyup Brook Roos.

Coach Gary Armstrong with Kalamunda.
ROUND 10 of the WA Amateur Football League B competition continues this weekend, with the race for fi nals now well and truly underway.
Although some teams are struggling to make their mark, it’s been the dream start for Kalamunda.
After a strong season in 2012, Kalamunda finished third on the B grade ladder and missed the flag by just 10 points to Fremantle CBC.
After nine wins and no losses, Kalamunda are leading the B grade competition, heading into the second half of the season undefeated.
Kalamunda president Mark Buscombe is proud of how the team is travelling but is under no impression that the remainder of the season will be smooth sailing.
“You don’t win a flag half way through the season. We’re under no illusions that it’s going to get easier,” Buscombe said.
“The competition is tough, and at the moment there are only a few wins defining the top 4.”
This weekend, Kalamunda will head to Beasley Park to take on sixth-placed Bullcreek Leeming, who will be eager to claim the win after being beaten by Kalamunda in their round one encounter.
Close on the Kalamunda’s tail are three teams fighting for their place in the top four.
After nine rounds, and having won six games apiece, Scarborough, West Coast Cowan and Hamersley Carine sit in second, third and fourth
position respectively.
With just two points separating Scarborough (26) from West Coast Cowan and Hamersley Carine (24), the three teams will be looking for wins from their round 10 games.
Scarborough will host High Wycombe, with West Coast Cowan playing against bottom of the ladder opponents, Stirling.
Hamersley Carine will head to Henderson Park, and take on Wembley who sit beneath them in fifth position. With their round one game winning margin only eight points, Wembley will again look for the four points.
At the other end of the ladder, the battle to avoid relegation has started, with four sides fighting to avoid the bottom two spots.
North Fremantle, Willetton, High Wycombe and Stirling currently sit in seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th spots respectively, with High Wycombe having recorded one solitary win for the year, and Stirling without a victory.
Stirling will travel to City Beach this weekend looking to steal a vital four points against top side West Coast Cowan that could start their journey to stay in the B competition.
Second bottom High Wycombe will be looking for their second victory, travelling to play Scarborough at Millington Reserve.
In a battle for seventh position, Willetton will travel to Gil Fraser Oval and will be seeking to record their fourth win of the season against North Fremantle. Hoping for the home ground advantage, North Fremantle will dig their heels in and play to win after losing to Willetton in round one.
Bouncedown for all matches is at 2:30pm, following Colts at 10:45am and Reserves at 12:35pm

Can You Help?In the 69 seasons since open football resumed in 1945, 6063 diff erent players have debuted in WAFL league football. Of these, the WAFC, after extensive research, is missing a date of birth for 245 players. Each week the Budget will list the playing records for 10 of the players for whom birth and other details are sought. These include:
Anthony Clatworthy (West Perth 1991, 2 games)
Robert Murray Elrington (East Perth and Perth 1951-1954, 32 games) – ex Goulburn Valley, Victoria died 1994 Mandurah
Emmet Michael Gill (East Fremantle 1949, 10 games) – ex Mullewa, died 2008
Kenneth Hammond (East Perth 1958-1960, 14 games)
C Harrison (West Perth 1945, 5 games)
Stanley Malcolm George Jancey (Perth 1954-1955, 5 games) – ex Vic Park Amateurs died 2009
William Jones (Subiaco 1946, 3 games)
Francis George Pass (South Fremantle 1959 2 games)
Donald J Sutherland (Subiaco 1953, 1game) – ex Victoria?
Lennard George Wallis (Swan Districts 1956, 1 game) – ex VFA? died 1976 Darlington
Any information that could help establish contact with or lead to full particulars being obtained on these players would be welcomed by WAFL historian Greg Wardell-Johnson ([email protected]) or Judy Chalmers (9381 5599) at the WA Football Commission.
