The Association Annual Meeting of Members will be held on April 12. If you are interested in running for the Board of Directors for the Dobson Association please submit your candidate form by February 19, so that your information is published for the March

Newsletter. All candidates’ information is also posted on the Association website at DobsonRanchHOA.com Each year, there are three seats that are available for a three year term. As you will see on pages 6-7 there are four community members that are currently running for the three seats. All members are homeowners that currently live within Dobson Ranch and have a desire to be a board member to assist the Association to continue with its success. In March the Association will be sending to each homeowner the annual meeting notice, candidate bios and the ballot to elect the individuals that are running for the Board. Last year out of 4,956 ballots sent the Association received 669 (13%) returned. This year, I hope that the numbers increase and that most of you will vote by fi lling out the ballot, placing it in the ballot envelope, placing the ballot envelope into the large envelope recording your last name and street address and either mailing it or dropping it off at the offi ce located at 2719 S. Reyes. The staff records the outside envelope to establish quorum, removes the inside envelope to deliver to the Vote Committee. The committee volunteers open each of the small ballot envelopes and counts the votes on the ballots. Staff nor committee never knows who voted for who. This process allows us to run a secret ballot/voting process. As a Board of Director for the Association, all of them accept a new and challenging responsibility. These new and past board members will be making many decisions that will help the Association prosper. Their goals primarily focus on maintaining the Association, increasing property values and enriching community events. They accomplish this through me and the professional staff of the Dobson Association and community volunteers. Board members will view and create Association policies. These policies are created by a majority vote of the board, not by individuals acting alone. The Board appoints ADHOC committees for the purpose of dealing with special projects and functions. Committee’s recommendations are discussed and voted at a monthly board meetings. Through their dedication they are making Dobson Ranch the best place to live.

I called the January 21, 2016 Dobson Ranch Homeowners Association Board of Directors meeting to order at 7:10 pm. Here’s a recap… I gave the President’s Report, congratulating our Executive Director David Jones on receiving his PCAM designation. David is continuing his education and is working on his last designation which is the Large Scale Manager (LSM). Congratulations David on earning your PCAM! The following business items were voted on and approved: Sarah Funtowicz resigned as Secretary; George Tihanyi was appointed as Secretary; Tempe Junior Crew, Inc. and Tempe Town Lake Boating lake usage; and the Ad Hoc Committee developing a policy on designating Association Property. The meeting adjourned at 9:32pm. As written in our January edition of the Ranchers Roundup, Board of Director, Sarah Funtowicz is moving out of the Ranch and in turn is not running for re-election in April. It is with a heavy heart that we accepted Sarah Funtowicz’ resignation as Board Secretary. Sarah has brought a fabulous enthusiasm to her work as a Board Director, her diplomatic style and positive energy undoubtedly impacted the Board as well as the community. Sarah will be missed! Congratulations to Sarah and her family on a new home and a new baby. Thank you to Sarah for her commitment to the community and service on the Board of Directors. Please join us for the next Board of Directors meeting February 18 at 7 pm, in the La Casita Grande Room.

Your NeighborhoodBOARD CANDIDATE BIOs

Stacy HolmstedtDobson Ranch owner and resident

Why do you want to serve on the Board? It’s been an honor to serve you on our Board of Directors since

2011, and I hope to earn another term. As a member who has served as both secretary and treasurer of our board, I’m familiar with both bylaws and budget and want to keep Dobson Ranch moving forward as a great place to live.

What key qualification would you bring to the As-sociation? I’d like to keep working on marketing Dobson Ranch to prospective homeowners, business owners and community leaders. By day I am a digital mar-keting director and had the great privilege of work-ing with our staff to launch the new dobsonranch-hoa.com website. We’ve come a long way in recent years (with new great restaurants and places to shop) but we still have more work to do.

What do you see as a critical issue facing our com-munity? We must be vigilant against blight. As the Fiesta District continues its transformation, we must stay in touch with the Mesa City Council and local lead-ers to make sure we don’t lose momentum. I’m also interested in how we can help our strip malls reflect our community and thrive, particularly on Baseline and Dobson. Finally, I think it’s important to help Dobson Ranch be a diverse, multi-generational community, welcoming to young families and retir-ees alike.

Autobiography: My husband Andrew and I have lived in Dob-son Ranch for almost 12 years; we’re invested in the health and happiness of our community. I currently serve as the secretary of the Mesa Arts Center Foun-dation’s board of directors and value having arts and culture near our homes. I’m a marketing director by trade who believes in the importance of good techni-cal jobs in the East Valley and sees Dobson Ranch as a great place for young professionals to live. I hold two degrees from ASU and graduated summa cum laude. As the current treasurer of the Dobson Ranch HOA Board of Directors, I was happy to recommend a zero percent increase in our monthly assessments, and believe we can thrive while being resourceful. Whether we’re canoeing in our lakes beneath in-credible sunsets or enjoying a wonderful diversity of restaurants, Dobson Ranch has much to be proud of, and I believe that the best is yet to come!

Sandra M. MurrayDobson Ranch owner and resident

Why do you want to serve on the board? I have lived in Dobson Ranch since 1985. I would like to see this

community continue to be the “Best Place to Live”. In order to continue be a sought after community, it is important to maintain our property values, at a reasonable cost to homeowners, and listen to what the homeowners’ desire. It is also imperative to be open to community’s opinion of how the commu-nity is being run. As a board member, I will call on my past experiences, listen to members of our com-munity, and ensure that money is being spent in a judicious manner.

What key qualifications would you bring to the As-sociation? I have a long history with the Ranch, both as a homeowner and board member, and have experi-enced what does and does not work with this partic-ular community. I have served as both President and Vice President of the board. In addition, for several years, I was a member of the Beautification Commit-tee. I regularly attend Budget and Finance meetings to be sure I understand the state of our finances. I am currently a member of an Ad Hoc group that is reviewing all of our documents to be sure they are consistent and easy to understand.

What do you see as a critical issue facing our com-munity? The most critical issues I see facing our commu-nity are our ability to: 1) maintain property values;2) stay within a zero based budget;3} keep annual assessment increases to a minimum; and4) stay involved in City of Mesa activities and gov-ernment affairs to be aware of how they affect our community.

Autobiography: I have been in Phoenix for 30 years. I am married with two daughters, a son-in-law and five grandchil-dren. I retired from now Century Link with 37 years of service in Sales and Marketing in both the Phoe-nix and Tucson areas. I have volunteered at Paz de Cristo, Seton Catholic Preparatory High School and St. Timothy’s Catholic School.

Laurie MoeDobson Ranch owner and resident

Why do you want to serve on the board? Dobson Ranch is a communi-ty and prides itself as being a com-

munity of individuals sharing common interests and goals. I would like to serve as a Dobson Ranch Home Owners Association Board of Director again because I enjoy contributing to my community and helping to ensure that we stay a community who looks out for each other and prides ourselves on be-ing good neighbors to each other and the area sur-rounding the Ranch.

What key qualifications would you bring to the As-sociation? My past experience as a Board Director, Board of Director Treasurer, and being involved on several committees: Recreation, Budget and Finance (as a homeowner and later Board of Director Liaison as Treasurer), and Water Management. I like to look at the big picture of things and I am able to make difficult decisions that are in the best interest of all the Ranch residents. I am also a member of the Dobson Ranch Women’s Club and past member of the Yacht Club. These experiences, my educational background (MBA), my business background (Cost Analysis) and my love of the Ranch allows me the pleasure to contribute my time to the Ranch.

What do you see as a critical issue facing our com-munity? A critical issue facing the Ranch is the continu-ation of upgrading the Ranch; the Ranch is over 40 years old. We need to continue to ensure that the Ranch continues to be “The Best Place to Live” by updating the Ranch in ways such as the new Round-Up and the new web page that were unveiled last year, investing in Ranch owned amenities and facili-ties to keep them up to date and modern, homeown-ers keeping their properties looking nice, continuing to bring quality activities to Ranch families, singles, retirees, renters, homeowners – the community.

Autobiography: I have lived on the Ranch for 14 years and own two properties here. I have a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) with a Technology Manage-ment emphasis, I work as a Government Cost Analy-sis Manager, and I plan to retire on the Ranch.

Stephen SparksDobson Ranch owner and resident

Why do you want to serve on the board? I am proud to call Dobson Ranch my home. My wife and I are raising our two young children in this great neigh-borhood. I want to see Dobson Ranch continue to provide a

great quality of life for its residents. I believe I can provide the vision, leader-ship, and accountability needed to ensure we have sustainable growth, qual-ity amenities, and an engaged community of residents.

What key qualifications would you bring to the Association? I have a Masters in Public Administration and over 15 years of Non-Prof-it leadership experience. I am very engaged in the local community and have established relationships with many civic, business, and political leaders. For the past 6 years, I have served as the chair of Housing and Community Devel-opment Advisory Board for the City of Mesa. I am skilled in board strategic planning, governance, and fiscal accountability. Most importantly, I am a father of two children who wants to ensure Dobson Ranch is a safe and con-nected community where my family can thrive.

What do you see as a critical issue facing our community? Marketing: The new website is great, but we need to have more than 200 people visiting our Facebook page. We can embrace social media to better celebrate the unique and innovative qualities of this community. Vision: I want to be part of the strategic vision that connects residents, businesses, and our schools so that we all grow and thrive together. Engagement: Our community needs to stay engaged in local politics, economic development, and city planning so that our voice is a priority when local decisions are being made. We also need to constantly engage all our residents so that we continue to innovate and be responsive to new trends and opportunities.

Autobiography: For over 16 years, I have called Mesa my home. My wife Erin and I have been married for 11 years and we have a 2 year old son and 7 year old daugh-ter. I have made a career in the nonprofit sector helping others. I am currently the Development Manager with an organization that helps struggling fami-lies find housing, jobs, and other empowerment resources. I was appointed to the iMesa Committee in 2011 to represent District 3 and worked hard to get the 2012 Parks Bond approved. You will often see me swimming laps at the Los Altos pool, walking around our lakes, or attending many Dobson Ranch activities with my family.

Your Neighborhood

Here we are smack dab in the throes of trying to sort out a new year. We just fi nished 2015 and now we are on the slippery slide through 2016. Before you know, spring will be upon us. What can I say; prob-ably the same thing I have been promoting for some time now; water makes living in the desert possible - make the best of it. As a community, we must continue to take steps to foster the use of the appropriate amount of water to achieve a balance in our land-scape. Of the 22 acres devoted to public landscaping, only 15 acres are devoted to turf. Watering of that turf is controlled, for the most part, from a central control station. This central station knows, among other details, the size of the areas controlled, the number and kind of sprin-klers, the soil type and the type of lawn and how much water to use to maintain a healthy lawn. The central station receives information on weather conditions and the daily evaporation rates. From these input, the central station programs the individual irrigation controllers to de-liver the right amount of water at the right time. It also similarly man-ages the drip irrigation that supports the fl ower beds that add color to our community. A similar control station is available to control the irrigation around our homes. For several years now many Ranch residents have taken advantage of the water conservation programs, offered by the City of Mesa and SRP. The Ranch, through its water conservation pro-gram has also assisted residents in adding smart controllers to manage their irrigation. The City of Mesa offers a cash initiative for the removal of turf. Information on turf removal can be obtained from the city or at the La Casita Rec. Center. The Salt River Project will again host a Water Expo, this year to be held on March 5th; see the details to the side of this article. Again, the major feature of the Expo is the sale of a smart controller. This year, SRP will continue to support individual water conservation ef-forts with the Rainbird smart controller offered at a deep discount. The temperature/rain sensor helps fi ne tune the watering times to match our climate. Consider attending the SRP Water Expo. For the convenience of the residents of Dobson Ranch, The Water Management Committee will again host the annual Water Conserva-tion Fair, this year on Saturday, April 9, 2016. As in previous years, practitioners in water conservation will be on hand to demonstrate water saving techniques. The same controller offered at the SRP Water Expo will be available for residents to examine and purchase. Remem-ber, water makes living in the desert possible - make the best of it.

Ms. Jessi’s Corner Happy New Year! The preschoolers are keeping busy with some really exciting things since school started back up from our winter break. We’ve learned about nocturnal, ocean and polar animals, took a trip to the Phoe-nix Zoo and of course celebrated Valentine’s Day! One of the most popular areas in the classroom is our sensory bin. I usually change it out each week to refl ect our theme. During ocean week we had water, aquatic animals, shells and blue rocks. Polar week there were chunks of ice along with water and polar animals. Keeping a sensory bin in your home can be very simple and quite possibly a life saver!

Materials:• Shallowplasticbin(underthebed storage types work great!)• Sensorymaterial:rice,beans,oatmeal, water, sand, noodles, shaving cream, etc.• Scoops,bowls,spoons,muffintins (anything goes!)• Plastictablecloth

Directions:If you are afraid of mess, lay a plastic tablecloth un-derneath to catch any mess. Fill the bin with your chosen material about 1/8 of the way, it doesn’t take much to make a child happy. Find items around the kitchen to put in the bin. If you have small animals for a par-ticular theme, put them in there! If you want more sensory bin ideas the internet is a great place to research. Or, if you’re in the neighborhood of the preschool, stop by! I’ll be happy to show you some ideas.

Bark in the Park What a beautiful January day it was on the 23rd and many Dobson Ranch residents and their dogs agreed as they participated in the Dobson Ranch Bark in the Park event. Laguna Park was fenced and transformed into a doggie playground so Dobson Ranch canines could meet and play with their community neighbors! Thanks to all the vendors that joined in the fun: Dobson Ranch Animal Hospital, Cage Free Grooming Salon, Animal Defense League of AZ, Green Bulldog Dog Wash and Spa, Petco, AZ Mastiff Rescue, and Dobson Ranch Water Conservation. This Bark in the Park day wouldn’t be complete without some contests. Chloe and Remi won the best trick contest as they cheered “touchdown” for the Cardinals along with owner Patty Smith. Koda and owner Karin Riner looked the most alike and Housten Morrow dressed Porkchop to look like a Beanie Baby, winning the costume contest. This is an annual event so be sure to watch the Ranchers’ Roundup for next year’s date!

Kiwanis Club Forming at Dobson Ranch Kiwanis, a service organization, is celebrating 100 years of “Serving the Children” in 2015. Dobson High Key Club is a vibrant student service club yielding young leaders year after year. Whether it is university level, high school, middle schools or elementary schools, Kiwanis sponsors clubs for all youth to grow in leadership and community service. Yes, there once was a Kiwanis club in Dobson Ranch. A new concept in Kiwanis is directed towards the Young Professional who wishes to give a little time and energy back to the community they so enjoy and live or work within. A Kiwanis club could serve many purposes for Dobson Ranch resi-dents and business people. It’s almost like an extended family who pool their idea resources, trade friendships, identify with youth of the community and provide unique service where needed. Fishing ClubBy Ed Ricci

At the time of this writing (1/ 20/16) the lakes are just a tad over 50 degrees in temperature, and the fish still seem to be moving slow. Some fish are being caught with plastics, jerk baits, swim baits, and crank baits. But the operative term is make your presentation slow. By the time you read this and the RoundUp is published several weeks later from the writing, things will be changing. Female bass will start hav-ing small egg sacks in their bellies, and the fish will be stirring as they move into spawning mode in late February through May. That means the fish will be more active until they slow down again in the heat of the summer- probably in July. The cycle continues. It is a wonder to watch our ecosystem change with its annual cadence- dictated by at-mospheric temperature, day length, and of course water temperature. Speaking about changes, did anyone notice that the gadwalls (duck/ geese family) were mostly absent this winter from our lakes? I wonder why? I am not going to lay it on global warming. There were a bunch of coots- which will start disappearing as it heats up. It seemed that we saw a lot less geese this winter also- except for the home bodies who fly over from the golf course. Fishermen- please get your 2016 permits to fish as Dobson Ranch resi-dents. Also, please make sure that your boats are tagged with Dobson Ranch permits. Happy Fishing!

Garden Club

What does your garden have in common with Giverny, the Desert Botanical, Brooklyn Botanical and Alcazar Gardens of Seville, Spain? Flower pots! Call them what you choose—flowerpots, plant pots, containers or tubs—pots brought our

garden plants from all over the world to our own little spot on earth. “Potting up Plants: An Illustrated story of the history and fashion of flower pots” will be the topic for the Tuesday, March 1 Garden Club meeting at 7:00 p.m. at La Casita. Linda Larson, presenter, is a lifelong lover of flowers, Master Gardener, Faculty Emeritus of Mesa College and gardener in

Mesa for more than 30 years. Linda is an advocate for the importance of public green space and the value of nature in our lives. Come to the meeting and enjoy an illustrated story of “Potting up Plants” with a look back into the history of flower pots, the changing fashions and garden wisdom provided by these vessels. Beautiful images from gardens of North America and Europe will be presented by columnist Linda Larson of The Traveling Gardener. Linda has traveledextensively to gardens researching and compiling the story of the flower pot. She has visited more than 450 gardens on four continents, 22 countries and 41 states. Linda’s story will inform, inspire and send you searching in your garden for the perfect place for just one more flower pot!

Tasty Dental Treats for Pets

When purchasing treats for your furbaby, it is important to look for the VOHC (Veterinary Oral Health Council) symbol. It is these treats that will help reduce tartar and plaque from building up. Here are a few examples of what you can try:

Chews with the VOHC symbol:• These awesome treats are complete with a new Dual-Enzyme System

which prevents plaque from forming on teeth and decreases the build up of bacteria. Both of which can be detrimental to your pets health care.

• Therearechewsthatgoestheextramilewithanaddedantisepticcalledchlorhexidine. The chlorhexidine is released by the dogs chewing motions allowing the teeth to be cleaned with every bite.

Dental Water Additive with the VOHC symbol:• By adding adentalwater additive to yourpetswater actuallywill help

freshen your pets breath. Also, when used with other dental preventative care (dental chews, brushing teeth, etc) the dental additive will assist in preventing the build up of plaque.

Oral Cleansing Gel, Spray, or Solution • Byaddingoneoftheseoralcleansingproductstoyourpetspreventative

dental health care routine, you can freshen their breath and significantly reduce the amount of plaque build up on their teeth.

There are so many different options available. See http://www.vohc.org/accepted_products.htm for more information. Please check with a vet if you have questions about trying new pet products.

In the Community“Play Me, I’m Yours”, is Coming to Mesa and Includes Participation from Dobson Ranch

The Mesa Arts Center’s presentation of Play Me, I’m Yours, an in-ternational touring artwork devised by British artist Luke Jerram, is coming to Mesa February 26th through April 9th, 2016 and will begin with the following events:

Friday, February 26, 2016Mesa Arts Center Foundation Annual GalaWorld Premiere Musical Composition for 25 Pianos Tickets Available Now: http://www.mesaartscenter.com/index.php/events/annualgala or 480-644-6500

Saturday, February 27, 2016 | 2:00-5:00pmFREE Public Kickoff Event where all 24 pianos are together for one day only at Mesa Arts Center

After the kickoff the pianos will live in public spaces for six weeks, available for the community to play and enjoy. When the project launches, 24 playable and artistically enhanced pianos will be featured, primarily in Downtown Mesa along Main Street, near Mesa museums and libraries, on Mesa Arts Center’s campus and at numerous other accessible and open-to-the-public locations, including several satellite locations throughout the city. The project has been installed in cities across the globe, includ-ing New York, London, Chicago, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Paris and London, bearing the simple instruction “Play me, I’m Yours.” Touring internationally since 2008, the project has reached over eight million people worldwide with over 1400 pianos. This free exhibition in Mesa will be its Arizona premiere offering performance and music for the public 24/7. What’s extra special about this event is that Dobson Ranch will be represented in this epic presentation in a couple ways. First, Dobson Ranch resident Chris Russell had the opportu-nity to work on the very fi rst piano and is also working on a second piano for the event: Chris states, “I got to work on the fi rst of 24 pianos in the “Play Me, I’m Yours” Street Piano art installation that will be on display through-out Mesa from late February into April. A revolving team of approxi-mately 15 people were guided by lead artist, Kyllan Maney and Erin Pe-ters who was in charge of all the constructional elements, including the lights. We met once or twice a week to build, paint and light the piano as well as hand-hammer over 1000 sequins that fl utter in the wind.” “The piano is currently dis-played at the Mesa Arts Center and will be a part of the kickoff event there on February 27th where all 24 pianos will be together before being spread out in public spaces around the city.” Next… The Dobson Associa-tion donated a piano for this event and the artists responsible for mak-ing it beautiful are the art students at Dobson High School. We can’t wait to see what they have created along with all the fi nished pianos! For more information contact [email protected], call 480-644-6621 or visit http://www.mesaartscenter.com/index.php/events/street-pianos-mesa.
