SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS
A geochemical soil sampling programme was conducted on High Grade Island, Keigat Island to the southeast and four islands to the north to determine areas of possible gold mineralization other than the known occurrences on High Grade Island. The highest gold value returned was 66 ppb; this value appears to coincide with the central High Grade occurrence. The results of this survey are encouraging, indicating the possibility of anomalous bedrock gold values in areas other than the known occurrences.
In conclusion, the 1995 geochemical soil sampling programme indicated the presence of anomalous gold values over the known occurrences, but also highlighted other areas of possible gold mineralization to the north and southeast. It is on this basis that further work is warranted on the Birch Lake property (see Recommendation on Page 8).
INTRODUCTION
The Birch Lake property is located 120 km northeast of the town of Red Lake, in the Keigat Lake and Casummit Lake area, Red Lake Mining Division (Fig. 1). From October 3 to October 31, 1995 (including 11 field days), a geochemical soil sampling programme, supervised by the author, was conducted on the property concentrating on Keigat Island, High Grade Island and the four islands north of High Grade Island. A grid cut in 1990 (baseline and tielines at
120* and lines at 030*) was utilized during the survey.
PROPERTY
The Birch Lake property comprises 218 contiguous unpatented claims, consisting of 222 16-hectare claim units, in the Keigat Lake and Casummit Lake area (Fig. 2). A complete list

LOCATION AND ACCESS
The area is located approximately 120 km northeast of the town of Red Lake, Ontario (Fig. 1). The centre of the property is located at 51*25*00" N latitude and 92*13*30" W longitude. The easiest access is via float or ski-equipped plane; access can also be made by winter road from the South Bay Mine via Confederation, Swain and Birch lakes.
PREVIOUS WORK
The first recorded work in the area was by Frederick Yellowknife Mines who conducted geological mapping and sampling, and magnetometer surveys in 1946. In 1960, the Alcon Syndicate conducted trenching and diamond drilling (three holes, 122.2m) in iron formation on the shore of Birch Lake, east of Dole Lake. In 1963 Dome Exploration (Canada) Limited conducted prospecting and geological mapping in the area between Penson Lake and Keigat Lake; anomalous gold results were reported from iron formation. In 1970, Falconbridge Nickel Mines Ltd. conducted an airborne EM and magnetometer survey over Johnson Island, and put down four diamond drill holes (480.9m). In 1984 through 1990, Dome Exploration (Canada) Limited conducted geological mapping and sampling, magnetometer, EM and VLF surveys, and nearly 14 000 m of diamond drilling in 89 drill holes. In 1995, Placer Dome Canada Limited conducted a structural reinterpretation and economic evaluation of the Birch Lake property, concentrating on High Grade, Keigat and Burn Point islands.
SOIL GEOCHEMISTRY
During the survey, 23 kilometres of grid were sampled, and 680 samples were collected (25m spacing, using soil augers) from High Grade Island, Keigat Island and the four islands north of High Grade Island (see Dwgs. l and 2 for location of samples). A grid cut during 1990 (baselines at 120*, gridlines at 030*) was utilized during the sampling programme. In cases where no grid lines were cut, lines were put in by pace and compass. Table l lists the claims
on which work was conducted.

In all cases (with the exception of the soil profiles), an attempt was made to sample the B soil horizon (depth of 10-30 cm), and approximately 1kg of sample was collected. Where no B horizon was present, the C horizon was sampled. As part of the survey, two soil profiles were dug, one on Keigat Island and the other on High Grade Island. The profile on Keigat Island (Fig. 3) indicates that the B horizon is 30 cm thick and that the C horizon begins at a depth of 45-58 cm (gradational from B to C horizon). The profile on High Grade Island (Fig
4) shows that the B horizon is 40 cm thick; this profile did not reach the C horizon, but bottomed out in granite boulders. Both profiles indicate that the B horizon is very sandy (70-80 % medium grained sand).
All samples were sent to Chemex Labs Ltd. in Toronto, Ontario and analysed for gold (Au) by neutron activation analysis (NAA). A detailed description of the sample preparation and analysis procedure is given in Appendix II. The majority of the analyses (~95%) returned < 5
ppb gold and approximately 80% returned < l ppb gold. The highest value returned was 66 ppb gold and appears to correspond with the central High Grade occurrence. Statistical analyses of the data indicate that the mean is 1.75 ppb with a standard deviation of 3.92; this is under the assumption that all values of <l ppb are reported as l ppb. If values < l ppb are reported as O ppb, the mean and standard deviation become Q .96 ppb and 4.09 respectively. The following table lists the anomalous gold values returned (10 ppb gold and greater):

The results of the geochemical analyses have been plotted on Drawings l and 2. Several anomalies have been identified in the area; on High Grade Island, the anomalous areas correspond with the central and west High Grade occurrences, but also indicate that there may be anomalous gold mineralization to the north and east (Dwg. 1). The gold anomalies on the eastern end of High Grade Island may indicate a continuation of the auriferous zone to the northwest. This zone may also extend through to Keigat Island to the southeast where several anomalous gold values have been returned (Dwg. 2).
RECOMMENDATION
Based on the 1995 geochemical soil sampling survey, the auriferous zone of mineralization known to occur on High Grade Island may extend to the southeastern part of the island and possibly further southeast onto Keigat Island.
Follow up work should include detailed examinations of anomalous areas (i.e. prospecting, mapping and sampling between lines) along with diamond drilling to test the area southeast of High Grade Island (i.e. between High Grade and Keigat islands) for possible extensions to the auriferous zone.

APPENDIX O
Sample Preparation and Gold Analysis Procedure
Chemex Labs Limited
The following is a description of the sample preparation and gold analysis procedure
used at Chemex Labs.
Preparation:The soil samples are sorted and laid out in an oven for drying. Once dry, the
samples are sieved, using a -80 mesh sieve to 175 microns. A 30 gram sample is used for neutron activation analysis (NAA); therefore, 65 grams of -80 mesh material is required. Plus fractions of samples are normally discarded, but can be saved upon request. If sieving of the sample cannot produce the required minimum weight (i.e. because of clay or pebble content), the entire sample can be pulverized which should produce enough material for analysis.
Fire Assay:After sieving (or pulverizing, if required), the sample "pulps" are poured into
ceramic pots and mixed thoroughly with a flux. Silver nitrate is also added to this mixture. The flux is a material which contains some metals, such as lead, and it is used to separate any gold in the sample. The ceramic pots are placed in a furnace at 700"C for 45 minutes. In the furnace, the lead from the flux attracts the gold, etc. from the soil sample; this mixture consequently settles to the bottom of the pot. Once the pots come out of the furnace, samples are poured into molds. The sample now appears as glass, with a metal button at the bottom. The glass is knocked off, then the metal button is put back in the furnace so the lead from the flux can burn or oxidize away. Finally, a l-2mm bead containing gold and silver is all that is left. Some or all of the silver will be from the silver nitrate solution added to the mixture at the beginning.
Neutron Activation Analysis (NAA):
The beads from the fire assay procedure are put on ticker tape and sent away for irradiation. Once returned, the ticker tape is automatically reeled through a machine which senses radiation in counts per second. Because the gold in each sample bead has been irradiated, the bead is radioactive for a short period of time. The concentration of gold in each sample affects how radioactive it is. A computer plots the radiation in counts per second on a curve and then computes values in ppb. The minimum detection limit is l ppb.
