Inclusive play...so children of all abilities can play togetherPlaying is fi rst of all fun, but over recent decades it has become clear that it is also one of the main ways in which children learn.

Play helps children’s development in many ways. Playing gives space to children’s imagination and fuels creativity. Through play, children get to know their physical possibilities and limitations. Challenges and risks teach them to evaluate situations and fi nd ways to go further than before. Playing together with other children helps to develop important social skills.

Unfortunately, playing in general and playing together with other children in particular is not self evident for every child. Children that have an impairment are often hindered by the fact that many play opportunities seem to be designed for able bodied children only. This can make it diffi cult for children with an impairment to play with other children, to have fun together and to develop important skills. It is estimated that there are around 288,348 disabled children living in Australia (7% of all children)*.

To develop exciting and inclusive play products, we worked together with a group of experts: from play workers to teachers at schools for visually impaired children and from hearing impairment researchers to special needs physiotherapists. Local schools and hospitals were involved in testing the products. This co-operation has especially helped us to develop the ‘fun4all’ range of inclusive stand-alone products and the ‘Amico’ range of modular play equipment.

We have learnt that focusing on disabilities leads to products that are not inclusive. Experts and children have taught us to focus on abilities rather than disabilities. From research we have found that children with certain impairments are sometimes even better at things than able bodied children. Visually impaired children for instance can be very good at hearing and often have a well developed sense of touch. With our play equipment, we want to make use of this and help children develop these senses and skills. We also want to cater for children with behavioural problems. Rather than mainly having areas where children can play together, we have also created space for children that want to be on their own and watch what is going on from a distance. This will help children on the Autistic Spectrum to feel comfortable and enjoy the play equipment and area as well.

As every child has a unique set of capabilities, we have created products that have challenges on various levels. This gives children of all abilities the opportunity to play at their own level, to fi nd challenges to grow and it allows them to play together with children that have different abilities.

Playground DesignOur philosophyOur work is focused on creating playful spaces that encourage exploration, inclusivity and a sense of wellbeing for all users, regardless of ability or age. We believe in providing simply the most invigorating, challenging, high quality, bespoke solutions possible, across all our play environments. Only well designed spaces receive the community input and care we feel is so important to the on-going upkeep of our public spaces. Whenever possible we strive to design in a contextual, sustainable manner, offering robust designs that minimise the impact on natural resources.

This design of high quality play spaces doesn’t happen by accident and we employ enthusiastic and professional designers who share our passion and the passion of our customers with whom we work very closely – the only way, we believe, to achieve the best results.

Playground Design ServicesMeeting your requirementsOur design services are largely offered without charge, depending on the complexity and time required for any given project. We produce 3D graphics, plans and details along with fully costed proposals enabling our customers to realise their projects in detail before construction commences. We have long standing exclusive agreements with some of the most forward thinking play equipment manufacturers in Europe. These ranges, when combined with our own innovative and inclusive products, enable us the fl exibility to offer solutions that are fully suited to the client, site or budget. The solutions are not determined by a limited product portfolio so this gives us the ability to meet our clients’ true requirements.

We work with schools, local councils, local authorities, family attractions, house builders and landscape architects. We are happy to take on the role as lead designer for the whole space or we can work on just the playground element, as part of a wider design undertaken by say a lead Landscape Architect. Flexibility, to meet our clients’ requirements, is at the core of everything we do.

Project ManagementGuiding you through the processWith over 20 years experience, we are able to bring our considerable knowledge, understanding and ability to every aspect of playground construction. Whilst we specialise in providing a full design and build service, we also provide our products on a supply only basis, offering any help and support required at every stage along the way.

We provide all our customers with the same level of service, whether they are a school whose funds have been raised through the hard work and efforts of their PTA, or a global visitor attraction group looking to invest in the highest quality play products and services available.

We are happy to act as Principal Contractor or Sub-Contractor, depending on the individual project’s needs and requirements. The safety of our site staff and the general public is at the heart of everything we undertake. Our project teams ensure that all our playgrounds comply with every aspect of current Australian playground safety standards, keeping up to date on the latest requirements with regular training.

We are used to undertaking all aspects of playground construction including: product installation, all types of safety surfacing (sand/bark/rubber tiles/wet-pour/), fencing, shade sails, etc.

Colourgalv Marine optionSpecial coatings for marine enviroments

Colourgalv Marine is an innovative coating that can withstand complete immersion in seawater for up to 25 years.

Colourgalv Marine is similar to standard Colourgalv in that it has both a hot-dip galvanized substrate and an electrostatically applied powder coat fi nish.

The difference is the hydrophobic middle coat that prevents oxidisation of the zinc and thus keeps the powder top coat in tact, especially important if the product is in constant contact with salt spray or is submersed.

Colourgalv Marine is available in the full Colourgalv range of colours and textures and is maintenance free for up to 25 years.

SustainabilityThinking about the next generation

At Russell Play, we are aware that natural resources are limited. We want to take responsibility for the materials and processes that are used to manufacture our products. For the sake of future generations, we want to work in a sustainable way.

We operate a sustainability policy throughout our production processes by:

Developing products that will last; using high quality materials; offering a long lasting fi nish through a continuous galvanising and powder coating process; selecting vandal resistant fi ttings on all our products; using mainly local suppliers and manufacturers within 30 miles of our premises; using re-usable materials and pursuing a cradle to cradle philosophy.

Only the best materials and fi nishes have been used for our products to ensure both beauty and resilience in all sorts of environments:

MetalsWe use high quality S275 sheet and plate materials that are in most cases laser cut into their fi nal shape. The tube materials that we use are generally 3mm thick or more in order to create strong and long lasting constructions. Stainless steel parts and products are made from S304 and highly polished to prevent corrosion.

PlasticsThe plastics in our products are strong, durable and recyclable. We are increasing the percentage of recycled material in our products without reducing the quality of the parts. For instance: most HDPE play panels in the Amico range have a high content of recycled material and the slats of our HDPE Multi use games areas are made from 100% recycled plastic.

We offer a 30 year warranty against structural failure on our HDPE panels.

RopeIn all our products we use 16mm steel core rope. The steel wires are galvanised and the external rope strands are covered with Polyamide or Polyester yarn, ensuring maximum abrasion resistance and colour fastness.

Our excellent 30 year warranty fi nish as standardOur excellent Colourgalv fi nish where we apply hot dip galvanising and powder coating in one continuous process guarantees outstanding warranties: we offer 30 year warranty against corrosion and structural failure on these parts.

The Colourgalv process

Prior to dipping the metal in molten zinc the metal goes through a six stage pre-treatment starting with de-greasing followed by rinsing & pickling in hydrochloric acid.

Dipping of chemically cleaned steel into a bath of molten zinc results in a metallurgical reaction and this forms a series of zinc- iron alloy layers which provide a corrosion barrier both internally and externally. The result is a corrosion resistant surface in full accordance with ISO 1461:1999.

The next stage is the pre-treatment of the galvanized substrate by linishing to achieve a smooth fi nish on the galvanized surfaces. Next is a multi-stage dipping process, which cleans and prepares the surface for greater adhesion. This dipping process is crucial for the quality of the fi nal coating.

The material is then dried, powder is applied and then it is placed in the oven to be cured for 20-30 minutes.

The result is a great looking fi nish that will last.

There is no waste in the processes used – every piece of metal and every drop of liquid is recycled.

Powder coating is an organic material and has a zero VOC content.

Coastal locationsCoastal locations are very harsh environments. For that reason we offer special fi nish option for these areas. If you are in an area that shows high zinc corrosion rates, we recommend that you use a Colourgalv Marine fi nish. We can also supply products or parts in special ‘marine grade’ Stainless steel S316.

We reference the Australian Standard AS4312-2008 Atmospheric Corrosivity zones in Australia. Feel free to contact our offi ce to discuss these options.

Inclusivity as standardAmico is a range of Inclusive Play equipment for 3 to 8 year olds.

The range is a result of the cooperation between Russell Play’s product development team and a variety of experts that work with impaired children on a daily basis.

The outcome is a very attractive product range that offers a lot of play value for a variety of abilities. Having challenges at various levels means that the products are interesting and challenging for impaired as well as able bodied children.

For example: the products have a variety of access possibilities: from transfer stations for wheelchair users to challenging climbs along vertical posts and nets. The equipment offers sensory as well as physical play opportunities. Amico has features that help children to socialise and play together, but it also has areas where they can relax and retreat.

Role play and themesChildren are masters in creating their own imaginary world. In this world reality and imagination are completely intertwined. Role play helps children to understand and make sense of the world around them. It is a world where they can be in control and have hours of fun. Play equipment that is lightly themed fuels children’s imagination whilst still giving them space for their own interpretation and free play.

The products of the Amico range are available in three themes: Countryside, Safari and Sea Life.

Every theme has its own attractive play elements and colour accents.

Amico InteractivePlay that is electric!Amico Interactive is the electronic version of the Amico range. One of the most exciting features of the Amico Interactive products is the Musical Bridge with its touch pads, microphone and loudspeaker.

Children can make music whilst they play on the bridge. This can be done in any position: lying down, sitting, walking and of course dancing! Friends can join in and sing their heart out through the microphone. Children can change the instrument type by a simple touch on the fl oor.

There is a choice of 12 great instruments.

Note signs on the bridge tell children where to touch the fl oor and children will play and learn and make music. The set up is such that children can play music together and can sing through the microphone at the same time.

The product has a volume control that can only be set by the owner of the equipment. A clock defi nes the time that music can be played. As a default the operating time will be set to 9am to 6pm.

There are no moving parts and all the electronics are completely waterproof, encased within the metal structure and hidden from sight. The product is designed to be extremely vandal resistant and is durable enough for public unsupervised areas where prolonged hard use is the norm.

The best thing about the Amico products is that they are invisibly

inclusive:

Children of all abilities can play on the units. This is possible because

there are various ways to access and leave the units: from relatively

easy to quite tough. Apart from physical play activities various

sensory and social play elements are integrated, so each child can

play at the ability level that suits best. This allows children of different

abilities to play together and it makes inclusivity natural and invisible.

Amico DynamoChildren generate the electricity themselvesRather than making use of ‘the grid’ or vulnerable solar panels, we thought that it would be more fun to let children generate the electricity for the interactive products themselves. The power is generated with Amico Dynamo, a power generator that is also easily accessible for wheelchair users. Turning the hand wheel with the ergonomically shaped handles generates power for the electronics and is a great activity at the same time.

The status of the charged battery is shown through two light graphs: one for the child that is generating the power and one that can be seen from the Musical Bridge. When fully powered, children can make music for several minutes.

Amico Dynamo powers the Musical Bridge, the speaker and the microphone.

From our tests with children we have seen that, together with the Musical Bridge, Dynamo may actually be one of the most popular play elements on the units!

Amico Dynamo is connected to the Amico Interactive product with an underground cable. The cable runs through the posts of the generator and the play equipment and is thereby completely hidden from sight.

fun4allSo that no one is left outAt Russell Play, we take inclusivity seriously. For this reason we are working with a team of experts to develop good, inclusive play equipment and design truly accessible play areas.

For our ‘fun4all’ range we have developed some exciting new product concepts. We discussed these in focus groups with children’s workers, special needs teachers, physiotherapists and researchers from various backgrounds. But maybe most importantly, we talked to the children themselves and to their parents. This helped us to come up with innovative ideas that work in practice.

Take the Access Spinner for instance:

Rather than creating another Roundabout, we have developed a Spinner. We did this because we learnt

that children love spinning fast. This is especially the case for many children on the Autistic Spectrum. The

Access Spinner can be used with wheelchairs and buggies as well. The friendly ‘fun4all’ graphics give away

that it is a product for all abilities. We call the Access Spinner invisibly inclusive, because it helps children

of all abilities to play together. There is ample space for friends to join in the spin!

The Access Spinner is mounted fl ush to the ground, so the access is easy. The sloped platform and the

shape of the handles make sure that the wheelchair cannot move or tip when spinning around. The rubber

platform is non-slip and friendly to the touch. The bright orange frame makes the product stand out and

the static green ring visually separates the moving from the static parts. We have used matt powder

coatings to prevent glare which can be especially irritating for children with visual impairments.

The warranty period applies from the date of purchase by the fi rst customer. The warranty applies to Russell Play’s products for each product type mentioned above and is limited to replacement of defective parts, without charge, at Russell Play’s discretion. The warranty covers only defects in materials.

Installation and Maintenance

The warranty applies only to products which have been correctly installed and maintained in accordance with written instructions provided by Russell Play.

Exclusions

All the above product types are guaranteed with the following exclusions:

- Damage caused by vandalism or negligence.

- Damage caused by improper or unsupervised use of the equipment.

- Chipping and wearing of paintwork through normal wear and tear.

- Wearing of polyamide strands on the steel rope in heavy wear areas which occur without any effect on the strength of the rope.

- Cost of dismantling and transferring any parts of the equipment which require to be returned to the manufacturer for inspection and for replacement. The manufacturer may, at his sole discretion, refund these costs to the buyer. The manufacturer and the seller accept no responsibility in any circumstances for any direct, indirect or consequential loss of damage, however arising, which the buyer may sustain in connection with any claim which may arise under the Terms and Conditions. Requests for remedial work under the Warranty must be notifi ed in writing to the seller as soon as possible following identifi cation of a defect.

Products installed near water

The Russell Play standard terms of warranty will apply to products installed near coastal areas where they are subject to salt water conditions or spray, provided they are treated with the Russell Play “ColourGalv Marine” hot-dip galvanised metal protection system or the product is made of Stainless Steel grade 316*.

Repairs

Warranty repairs shall only be carried out by Russell Leisure Ltd or their authorised Sub Contractors. Repair work carried out by others shall not be covered by the warranty.

This warranty should be read in conjunction with Russell Leisure Limited Conditions of Sale.
