Bede learned his trade as an apprentice mechanic at Littlejohn’s, a family-run garage in Lidcombe. He moved to Cooma in 1937 to work for a Ford distributor, where he eventually became foreman. In 1941 he moved back to Sydney with wife Wyn and children Ron, Patti and Betty. At that time Australia’s war involvement escalated and demand for people to work in munitions production rose dramatically, and Bede took a job at Howard Auto Cultivators which was manufacturing armaments under government contract. It was during his time in this job that Bede began to repair cars in his spare time.

Most working vehicles had been commandeered by the army during WWII, so after the war there was big demand for repairs for the few vehicles in circulation. Bede fixed a car for a local family who owned a wood and coal yard on Victoria Rd, Parramatta and they offered to rent half their shed to him

so he could expand. A friend recommended Bede employ a talented panel-beater and spray-painter, Arnold May, who had just left the Army and joined Bede to help with the growing demand. Arnold stayed with Royans the rest of his working life. “I remember he worked on General Douglas MacArthur’s Packard car at one stage,” Ron says. Tools were scarce and even small jobs took hours, with everything done by hand. >

The business grew quickly after the war and by 1948 Bede had employed another two tradesmen and his son Ron had begun work as an apprentice. A couple of years later, Bede bought the company’s first tow wagon – and 17-year old Ron was its first driver. The first insurance repairs started coming in, mostly cars, and the business grew. By 1955 they had outgrown the old shed and Royans bought out the site and expanded the building as they took on more work.

In 1957, Bede and Winnie’s daughter Patti (Ron’s sister) married Don Andrews, who had a bread delivery business. Don helped the Royan family’s repair business after hours with odd-jobs and bookwork, and by 1960 he became a fulltime employee. Bede slowly cut his hours down and moved into retirement and Ron and Don took over the running of the business. R

They hired Pat Ferris, a mechanic with strong experience in truck repairs, who set out to train the rest of the team. “The first of the new trucks we repaired cost us $32,000 to fix - as much as our turnover for a whole year,” Ron says. But the team at Royans worked hard to get trucks fixed quickly and thoroughly. Repairs at Royans usually took a few weeks, at a time when their competitors would sometimes take six months to a year to fix a truck. So their reputation grew and the business flourished. “The roads were pretty bad in those days,” Ron says, which generated a lot of business.

Royans began to outgrow the Victoria Rd site which had by now expanded to include a spare parts and accessories store, so Don and Ron bought a property (nicknamed the ‘igloo building’) on Parramatta Road, Granville in 1971, as well as another site across the road five years later to serve as the head administration office. The Granville repair site was large, modern and fitted out with the latest tools and equipment, helping Royans service even more customers, with the team regularly facing a line of five more trucks needing to be repaired each morning.

In the mid-1970s Royans started importing trucks and converting them to right-hand drive before selling them, and had expanded their own parts imports into a new business, Trucking Supplies, which also on-sold wrecking parts. >

Truck repairs had always made up a large proportion of the business. However, following the success of their first repair of one of the more modern trucks that were growing in popularity in the late 1960s, Ron and Don saw an opportunity to specialise in this area. By the early 1970s, they had made the decision to move away from cars and focus solely on truck repairs.

Don and Ron recall plenty of stories from the old days. By the mid 1970s they had a large number of customers based in remote locations, so in 1974 Ron took up flying planes so he could reach these customers quickly and quote for repairs in various locations in a single day. On a sombre note, given the proximity of the Granville premises to the railway line, Royans staff were called on to assist rescuers at the Granville train disaster in 1977 where hundreds were injured and 83 people killed.

By the early 1980s the company had expanded further and was ready to open other branches. Royans also invested in specialist new technology, such as the largest Black Hawk Power Cage Chassis Aligner in the world, and a heated spray booth which would take two prime movers at the one time, both the first of their kind in Australia. During the 1980s, the old Victoria Road and Parramatta Rd properties were sold, with new sites in Yenora and later the current Chipping Norton site giving plenty of room for further growth, and all despite a tough economic environment with a recession hitting in 1982. The recession resulted in 52 insurance companies going bankrupt in succeeding years, owing large amounts of money to repairers.

Around this time, the third generation of the Royan and Andrews families was starting to enter the business, learning the ropes from the bottom up from employees who had been with the company for decades. Ron’s son Peter began his mechanical apprenticeship in 1976, and to this day remains a manager within the group. Don’s son Gary joined the business in 1980 after finishing his accounting degree. Gary is today Finance Director of Royan Truck and Trailer Repairs in Sydney.

Royans opened their first regional branch in Wagga Wagga in 1980, buying out the former Bartholemew’s truck dealership and adding a truck and trailer repair shop. After a few years, Don’s son Bill Andrews stepped in to learn the business and eventually took over management of the branch in 1990.

Bill recalls that in the 1980s, it wasn’t unusual to have eight vehicles in a day come off the old Hume Highway in need of repairs. The Wagga Wagga branch grew steadily and by 1998, Royans had purchased a new 5 acre site and completed the construction of a purpose built facility that included the latest and most advanced technology such as paint booths and chassis aligners.

Royans opened a second regional branch in Dubbo in 1982. In 1983 they unveiled the Royan Group’s first custom-built premises, which was opened by then-Premier Neville Wran. It was one of the most modern truck repair facilities in the country and Royans customers soon benefited from the time savings generated, as parts supply and fit up could be done more seamlessly and the repair process flowing smoothly.

By 1984 Royans had made their first interstate move, joining the Church family in Melbourne in a successful family partnership that is now in its thirtieth year.

Panel-beater Alf Church had migrated to Perth from London after the war in the mid 1940s. His son Brian made his way to Melbourne, finding work as a panel beater. He spent several decades working for one of Melbourne’s largest repairers, where he was joined by son David. David also took on a panel beating apprenticeship.

Three years later, the opportunity to form a partnership between with the Royan, Andrews and Church families came about. The families shared a commitment to quality repairs, customer service and staff satisfaction.

Together they opened a Royans branch in Melbourne in June 1984. They invested in a 10 acre site in Bayswater North, that included the shell of a large former factory. The team had it fitted with new spray painting & chassis alignment equipment which had become an essential part of all Royan branches, and it was up and running within weeks. “The trucks were rolling in , just a few days later, we were still clearing the block as they came in,” recalls David Church.

In 1986 Brian’s other son Darren also joined the business and started his panel beating apprenticeship. Today, Darren is a Senior Estimator within the business.

In 2001, David took over the position of Managing Director. After a few years, the decision was made that for Royans Melbourne to remain relevant, they would have to invest in a new building and equipment.

In 2009 Royans Melbourne opened its new workshop, making it the most modern commercial vehicle repair facility in Australia. David says with a strong team in place, that now includes his son Chris and nephew Ben, employed as a diesel mechanic and panel beater respectively, they are well and truly set for the future. R

In 1997, Royans opened their Brisbane branch in Wacol, the group’s second interstate site.

Queensland’s huge dependence on road transport made Brisbane a logical choice to expand the growing network.

Its close proximity to the Transport Hub in Brisbane positioned the facility within easy reach of its principal client base and the

company followed the same formula that had worked so well in other locations, equipping the facility with the most up-to-date equipment available.

That same dedication to customers and staff that had formed the hallmark of the other Royan Branch’s, has seen the business grow to become Queensland’s largest and best equipped truck accident repair facility.

BRISBANE

At the turn of the last century, blacksmith and wheelwright DJ O’Neill had set up in the tiny township of Burraga, NSW where he manufactured and repaired horse-drawn vehicles. He later moved to Blayney and then to Newcastle – and by then, the work had shifted to automobiles. By 1962, his grandson Wilton O’Neill was the director of O’Neill’s Body Works Pty Ltd and the company employed eleven people who specialised in motor body building and smash repairs.

O’Neill’s moved their truck and trailer division from Mayfield to its current premises in Sandgate in 1973. In the years that followed Wilton O’Neill and his family built a reputation for quality work in their truck repair, bodybuilding and heavy towing businesses.

In 2002, following negotiations with the late Wilton O’Neill, the Royan Group purchased O’Neill’s truck repair business and workshop in Sandgate, Newcastle. Today the business is managed and run by some of the most experienced staff in the business - seven of whom did their apprenticeships with Wilton O’Neill and many others who have worked for the company for more than twenty years.

After seventy years in business, Royans understands better than anyone, when disaster strikes, experience and quick thinking are paramount. Their infrastructure has been developed to handle vehicle accidents and customer care from any location in Australia, with trained representatives located throughout Australia’s eastern states to assist transport operators at the scene of the accident and provide vital information on the status of their drivers, their load and the progress of recovery.

Whilst the group’s core business remains truck and trailer accident repairs, Royans now repairs a wide range of other commercial vehicles and equipment such as buses, cranes, earthmoving, farming and mining equipment, even caravans. R
