HEALTHY HAPPILY WITH TANYA WYATT Organic, natural make health sense IN this article, let’s look at which foods constitute a healthy diet, since there seems to be a lot of confusion around the issue, especially when terms like processed, natural and organic come into the picture. Processed foods would include crisps, muffins, commercial breads, pas- tas, biscuits and pro- cessed meats. Included in this category would be foods fortified with vita- mins and minerals, for example breakfast cere- als and bars, commercial breads and juices. These are generally foodstuffs which have been stripped of any nat- urally occurring nutrients due to the nature of their process- ing. These vitamins and min- erals tend to be added post-processing and are gener- ally lab-synthesised (man- made), which in itself may cause problems. Natural should indicate foods that are completely un- damaged, such as whole grains, fresh vegetables, fresh fruit, raw nuts and seeds, legumes, beans, whole (unpas- teurised) dairy and animal proteins. Don’t be fooled into believing a product is natural, just because it says so on the label – after all fruit juice is natural when squeezed manu- ally, but when the juice is ex- tracted by means of heat (thus destroying any naturally oc- curring nutrients), has had synthesised vitamins added to it, and then stored for weeks on end in a plastic-lined carton (releasing problematic ptha- lates and xenoestrogens into the liquid), you’re not getting quite the same level of nutri- tion from it. In fact, you’re getting a product, which is probably quite toxic and cer- tainly very “dead”. Organic refers to food which have had no chemicals added to it through its growth span (this includes the soil in/on which it is grown), for example pesticides, growth hormones, routine vaccina- tions and antibiotics. It also refers to foods that have not been genetically modified in any way. This doesn’t mean that organic foods are always healthy, since you may find plenty of processed foodstuffs made with organic ingredients. tion at your nearest depot. The bulk of your diet should be made up of organic, natu- ral, healthy foods and at least a third to half of what you eat should ideally be raw. You can get this in the form of salads, crudités, fruit, fresh vegetable juice, sprouts, nuts, seeds, lightly-cooked or rare meats. The bottom line is that you need to feed yourself with foods that the body and brain recognise as food – in other words, those that provide you with the building blocks your body requires for outstanding energy and long-lasting vi- tality. Never forget – you are what you eat and as- similate… Here’s where I recom- mend my clients shop for organic, natural and healthy foods: Wisteria Trust Farm (041) 955-5528; rvolker@telkom- sa.net Un-medicated and free-range chicken; cheeses; raw honey; organic beef and lamb. HEALTH and B EAUTYSugaring in focusWHO said you can’t teach olddogs new tricks?

Sugaring has learnt a thingor two since the ’8 0 s.

Sugaring is a hair-removalprocess that has made a come-back into beauty salonsacross the city since itsmore ineffective versionin the ’80s, but the newformula has proven to re-move all types of hair.

Owner of Skin inProspect Road, Walmer,Megan Nicholls said themethod was very popular backin the day, and that the newproduct is safer for peoplewanting hair removal.

“The product consists of ba-sically sugar, water and lemonjuice and is a lot safer thanw a x i n g, ” said Nicholls.

She added that because of

the simplicity of the ingredi-ents, people are not prone toallergic reactions that couldoccur from ingredients in oth-er hair-removal products.

Nicholls said the sugar mix-

people will still feel the pain ofhair being removed.

She added the sugaring pro-cess is a lot more hygienic asthere is no re-dipping into them i x t u r e.

“One bit of the sugarmixture is reused per cli-ent to remove hair, and ifmore is needed it is addedwithout a spatula touchingskin and then being putback into a pot.”

She added hair removalingredients such as wax do

not get heated enough to ridthe pot of any germs that maycome off the body when usinga spatula.

Nicholls said another prowas that sugaring clients areless prone to ingrown hairs, and the hair seems to growback at a slower rate.

ture is only heated to bodytemperature, so there is norisk of removing skin, or oversensitising the skin.

“Sugaring is less painful be-cause you are not feeling thestinging sensation of the hotwax being removed.”

Nicholls pointed out that
