A word from our patients We have been receiving some amazing notes of recognition from patients for members of Team RVH since the launch of the Values in Action pro-gram. Here are a few examples of the kind words our patients had for staff, physicians and volun-teers: “Absolutely the best staff!” - Dino “My nurses were the best and the other sur-rounding staff on the floor were great.” - Dan, Rehabilitation Inpatient “Sunday was chaotic here in Emerg, yet my nurs-es were always smiling and great at keeping me comfortable and informed.” - Dan, Emergency “Volunteers and staff were very helpful and made my visit more comfortable. Thank you!” - John, Day Surgery

“Very good, excellent care, very informative.” - Vanessa, Respiratory Inpatient “Fantastic! Very friendly vol-unteers and staff.” - Laurie, Child and Youth

Painter has a heart for RVH

Fighting cancer her own way

Nicole Jannis takes a moment to pull on her black boxing gloves, adjust her pink satin fighter’s cape and tighten up her championship belt. She is on her way to the chemotherapy suite at RVH’s Simcoe Muskoka Regional Cancer Centre. She’s not going there to cheer up patients – she is one. The 28-year-old Barrie wom-an wanted to face breast can-cer her way and that meant having a positive attitude, plen-ty of fun and several costume changes. Every time she arrived at RVH for her chemotherapy treatment she and her mother, Lesley, arrived in style.

August 1 was the best day of all – it was the last day of treatment and Nicole rang the bell in the chemo suite to signi-fy the occasion. But like every treatment appointment before, Nicole arrived at RVH in costume. For this momentous occasion she and her mom dressed like box-ers. Other costumes included: Crush Cancer shirts (can of pink soda); Super Survivors; Cooking Up a Cure with pink wigs and 200 cupcakes to match; Cancer Commandoes; Cancer Busters; Fishing for a Cure; and Demolishing Cancer where they dressed as con-struction workers.

Marie Wiersma, 85, a painter from the Northern Ontario community of Britt, was so pleased with her re-cent treatment at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH) she donated a piece of her work to the facility and offered to exhibit many of her other paintings. A Passion for Life, is a special exhibit organized by ART@RVH in collaboration with the RVH Foun-dation and is displayed in the health centre’s Corridor Gallery until Saturday, October 4th.

It was during a visit to Barrie to see her son Jonathan (above), RVH’s Director of Decision Sup-port, she was taken to RVH with chest pain, and through the exper-tise of the cardiac program, a blockage in a secondary cardiac artery was discovered and stented in collaboration with Southlake Re-gional Health Centre (SRHC). Wiersma says it was, ‘the per-sistence of the RVH cardiac team that got to the root cause of her symptoms.’

RVH Royal Review

Martha Mayes, Supervisor Patient Registration “I’m reading No Relation by Terry Fallis. The book is about a young copywriter in New York City dealing with sudden unemployment, family trials and tribulations and coping with the challenges of having a famous name (Earnest Hemming-way). It takes place in one of my favorite cities and is filled with wonderful quirky charac-ters, also living in the shadows of their famous names.”

Vic’s Picks - we want to know what you think! What book are you reading this summer?

Jo Clegg Patient Services Clerk Central Reg-istration “I’m reading Cockpit Confiden-tial: Everything You Need to Know About Air Travel: Questions, An-swers, and Reflections by Patrick Smith. I’m learning lots about take-off, landing, turbulence and all that fun flight stuff.”

Shannon Janisse Data Quality Lead Patient Registration “I’m reading Lone Wolf by Jodi Picoult. It’s about a father who left civilization and his family to live in the woods with a pack of wild wolves be-cause he’s always felt more comfortable alone with nature than in the real world. I’ve read a few of her books and (spoiler) I can’t say I really enjoyed this one!”

Safety really is our promise!

Recently, members of Team RVH were asked to participate in mandatory safety training mandated by the Ministry of Labour. We are pleased to report that we reached a 99 per cent com-pletion rate by our June 30 deadline. In an organization our size, this is an incredible achievement! “This result tells me that our Team RVH truly believes safety is our promise,” says David Coward, Chief Human Resources Officer. “When employees take responsibility for their safety they are achieving two important goals. The first is to keep themselves safe and by doing so, they achieve the second which is to keep our patients safe. At this level of completion we are truly an industry leader when it comes to safety train-ing.” Congratulations and thank you to everyone for their commit-ment to employee and patient safety!

In this position he will lead the full development and implementation of the program on-site over the next year.
