I am delighted to welcome you to the 2016 Royal Rehab Gala. Whether you have been a supporter fora number of years or this is your first experience withRoyal Rehab and the work we do in rehabilitating people who have experienced a major accident or trauma and supporting people with disability to participate actively in their communities, we are very appreciative of your support.

Royal Rehab was founded in 1899 through a visionary act of philanthropy to help the most vulnerable in the community; to give hope, comfort and community to hospital patients discharged as “incurable”, often with no family, money or ability to work. And today, more than 100 years on, the generosity of the community at events like this continues to enable choice,

participation and connectedness for people living with disability. Whilst there has been marked progress in rehabilitation outcomes and disability support over the years, sadly Australia is lagging behind in supporting the wellbeing, choice and connectedness of people with disability.

The statistics tell a challenging story:

- Today one in five people in Australia have a disability.

- Every week five more Australians sustain a spinal cord injury and 10 to 15 sustain a severe traumatic brain injury.

- People with disability in Australia are only half as likely to be employed as people without a disability.

- 45% of people with a disability in Australia live in or near poverty, more than double the OECD average of 22%.

- There are significant physical, environmental and psycho-social barriers to employment and to regular participation in sport and community-based activities and recreation amongst people with a disability, particularly at a non-elite level.

- People with disability are likely to have lower incomes than the general population and therefore tend to have fewer housing options and higher dependence on social housing and support services.

Thank you for your generous support

- In 2099, it is estimated that approximately 4 million people will have a severe or profound disability in Australia – more than triple the current number; and

- Australians with a severe disability and their families have poor outcomes on every measure of community participation and wellbeing.

As you will hear tonight, anyone could find themselves living with a disability at some point in their lives, yet as a community we are not well positioned to respond to the needs of this population. Royal Rehab is dedicated to changing this; to enabling choice for people with a disability.

Our goal is to build a more inclusive society for people with complex health and behavioural needs across the disability spectrum and to advancing rehabilitation so that people with a traumatic brain, spinal cord injury, stroke and other neurological conditions have the best possible chance of returning to their lives in a meaningful way.

The time is upon us to take action and raise the funds needed to make lasting impact on these statistics - to rehabilitate our clients not just physically but support them to return to their lives and participate in their communities in ways that are meaningful to them.

Thank you so much for being with us this evening and for your personal support. I hope you dig deep tonight to support our important work. You are a part of our community, and we are very appreciative of your ongoing support.

Best wishes,

impairment through trauma, accident or illness.

We are a State-wide service for on-site and at-home rehabilitation for brain and spinal cord injury and provide

services for other complex, long term health needs. We support specialist spinal cord rehab in regional NSW.

Our Lifestyle Support services provide long-term supported accommodation, and a range of other services to support the

lifestyles of people with disability in the community.

Our outpatient and community rehabilitation programs include Driving Rehabilitation, Transition Aged Care therapy, home based and outpatient rehabilitation and hydrotherapy.

The Royal Rehab Foundation is committed to supporting Royal Rehab’s vision of being Australia’s leading provider of

rehabilitation and disability support services.

Donor support is invaluable to Royal Rehab in advancing rehabilitation and envisioning a future where there are no

limitations to participation.

Our financial challenge is great.

But with your support we can have a profound impact in helping our clients to reclaim their lives and

connectedness with their communities.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

For more than 100 years Royal Rehab has supported our clients to get back to their lives through an innovative model of rehabilitation which takes

recovery out of the traditional environment and integrates it with rehabilitation activities in everyday life. Our original programs help our clients build autonomy

and enable them to participate actively in their communities.

From our Vocational Rehab Program and Productive Garden to our Return2Sport initiative, Royal Rehab is demonstrating that returning to life is possible and is supporting clients through this process to develop the skills

and connections to return to their life’s pursuits.

ALL DONATIONS OF $2 AND OVER ARE TAX DEDUCTIBLE. To make a donation simply complete a pledge form at your table or donate

to the following wish list items on the silent auction system:

SUPPORT OUR WISH LIST ITEMS TONIGHT

WISH LIST #1 – $150 Number needed: 10

Will fund an Expert Mouse® Wireless Trackball allowing clients who have some upper limb movement but no hand function to be able to operate a mouse and on screen keyboard. The trackball can be paired through Bluetooth® 4.0 The trackball comes with TrackballWorks™ software which changes cursor speed and properties and allows the buttons to be customised to maximise functionality for our clients.

WISH LIST #2 – $200 Number needed: 5

Will fund an Ifaraday stylus which will help a client to control devices that would otherwise be impossible or inefficient as they are not able to perform precise touches on the screen. The flexible shaft means that the device can be moulded around the hand of a person with contractures and is a much simpler and neater solution than other alternatives.

Page 6: Royal Rehab Gala 2016 Program

WISH LIST #3 – $450 Number needed: 5

Will fund a Blue 2 Bluetooth Switch and Specs Switch to enable people with quadriplegia with limited or no upper limb function to use a smart phone or tablet. The Blue 2 Bluetooth Switch syncs with the person’s device allowing them to use their tablet or smart phone hands free.

This device can be used stand-alone if a person has the necessary upper limb function to control it, but can be used for any client in combination with the Specs Switch. By simply plugging in the Specs Switch to the Blue 2 and placing the added switch to where it can be accessed (e.g on a head support of a wheelchair) everyone can independentlyuse their smart phone or tablet.

WISH LIST #4 – $600 Number needed: 4

Will fund a Sip/Puff Switch which is ideal for people who have no ability to use their upper or lower limbs to activate devices, including computers, tablets, smart phones, and environmental control systems.

In effect, the “sip or puff” replaces the need to click a mouse or tap a screen with a stylus or finger. In conjunction to the sip/puff switch a gooseneck mount is required to securely attach the switch to tables, desks, beds and wheelchairs. This device is particularly valuable for people with high level spinal cord injuries that only have head movement available to operate computer systems.

WISH LIST #5 – $650 Number needed: 10

Will subsidise a driver assessment as part of our Return2Driving Program for a person with disability or age related condition and with limited financial means enabling them to regain their drivers licence along with the independence that allows them to remain connected with their community.

WISH LIST #6 – $900 Number needed: 10

Will pay for 10 driving lessons as part of the Return2Driving Program for a person with an acquired disability with limited financial means wanting to return to driving. Learning to drive again not only delivers greater independence, connection to community, health services and employment but it importantly results in improved quality of life and self esteem.

WISH LIST #7 – $1,000 Number needed: 1

Will fund art supplies for the Brain Injury Unit. Art therapy offers people recovering from a traumatic brain injury a chance to use the creative process of art-making to progress their rehabilitation and develop their physical, mental and emotional well-being. Being able to express themselves helps these clients to work through challenges, develop interpersonal skills, manage their behavior, reduce stress, increase self-esteem and self-awareness.

WISH LIST #8 – $1,500 Number needed: 5

Will fund a person with a disability to attend a Return2Sport Snow or Summer Camp connecting individuals with recreation and leisure opportunities, mentoring programs, education, information and pathways to return to sport, recreation and leisure.

WISH LIST #9 – $2,500 Number needed: 2

Will fund a Windows tablet and supporting software giving clients with a spinal cord injury an opportunity to try voice activated software in a complete package. This donation will support the purchase of a light weight tablet with all necessary software installed and necessary attachments to set the device up for clients to use unassisted.

WISH LIST #13 – $10,000 Number needed: 1

Would pay for 8 people to attend the Imagine Me digital creative workshop over 6 weeks. WISH LIST #14 – $12,000 Number needed: 1

Will pay for our Return2Music Program which features weekly choir sessions led by a professional singer and public performances including the City of Ryde Christmas Carol concert.

Music and singing are powerful rehabilitation tools, providing a way for our clients to connect, communicate and express themselves. Music and singing are the only interventions that resonate with some clients delivering some remarkable engagement not possible through other mechanisms. Music can trigger positive changes in behavior and emotional well-being and can play an important part in the rehabilitation journey.

WISH LIST #15 – $15,000 Number needed: 1

Will fund an Uppertone Machine for the Spinal Injury Unit gym allowing a spinal injury client with C4-C5 quadriplegia and below to perform resistance exercises without assistance.

The device attaches to the wheelchair or table top and not only allows people to operate a work station/tablet, but also assists them with eating and drinking. This piece of equipment could really make the difference for people with C5 quadriplegia, incomplete quadriplegia to be able to return to work!

WISH LIST #16 – $25,000 Number needed: 1

Will fund an outdoor accessible fitness circuit for wheelchair users. This easily accessible equipment for wheelchair users enables them to strengthen their upper body muscles, along with improving and maintaining their physical fitness. The fact that this ‘all weather’ equipment is installed outside promotes independence and enables a fun, social exercise routine outside therapy gyms.

WISH LIST #17 – $83,000 Number needed: 1

Will fund a fully modified vehicle for our Return2Driving Program which would allow clients who only mobilise using a wheelchair, but are able to transfer themselves, to learn how to independently drive a vehicle.

WISH LIST #18 – $100,000 Number needed: 1

Will fund our Productive Garden Program for one year including erecting a shaded area, irrigation system, provision of ongoing horticultural supplies and evaluation of the program as a novel approach to rehabilitation. Royal Rehab has a vision for the Productive Garden, taking rehabilitation out of the traditional environment and integrating it with rehabilitation activities in everyday life and to deliver research on the value of recreational activities as part of rehabilitation.

The Productive Garden engages clinicians from all disciplines to use the garden to facilitate the rehabilitation and wellbeing of their clients/patients. The productive garden is heavily dependent upon input from patients/clients. In particular, patients with spinal cord injury have been spreading compost and planting seeds to aid their balance when seated and increase their upper limb reach; patients with brain injury have built trellises for climbing plants, such as peas and cucumbers; and patients with stroke have planted seedlings.

WISH LIST #19 – $170,000 Number needed: 1

Will fund supported recreational sport and leisure camps and clinics for people with a disability in targeted areas - tennis, snowsports, running, cycling, yoga, soccer, golf, beach access, adventure camps and dance – for one year as part of our Return2Sport Program. Return2Sport is an initiative that promotes, as independently as possible, participation and engagement in community-based recreation and leisure pursuits for individuals with disability.

The Return2Sport initiative includes recreation and leisure training and mentoring programs and clinics, education and information, and a large scale Expo designed to promote pathways for people with a disability to return to sport, recreation and leisure. There are significant physical, environmental and psycho-social barriers to regular participation in community-based sport and physical recreation amongst people with a disability, particularly at a non-elite level.

Return2Sport was developed in response to these issues to improve awareness, access and participation rates of people with a disability in organised sporting and recreation activities within their own communities.

To help our clients connect with their lives and build a more inclusive society, Royal Rehab must meet these and other substantial funding commitments for vital projects to 2020 and beyond.

We have some of the most talented and dedicated clinicians and disability support staff in the country, but the only way for them to really impact the state of rehabilitation and disability care in Australia is to ensure they have access to the most up to date training, tools and resources to deliver the most innovative programs for people living with disability.

Your donation towards one or more of our Wish List items tonight is fully tax deductible and can be acknowledged in a variety of ways according to your wishes including naming rights, plaque, annual report, website and social media.

Please join us in imagining a world without limits – in enabling choice, participation and connectedness for people living with disability.

Candice and her husband, Nathan, lived active, busy and fulfilling lives. From Nathan’s involvement with the Sydney Symphony and his winery Kilikanoon, Candice’s photography, painting and costume design, to keeping in touch and helping their two children, DJ Sam and dancer Mina, who lived abroad in France and Cuba, to their shared love and professional involvement in the arts, there was always something keeping them busy.

In 2015 Candice and Nathan looked forward to celebrating the 150th birthday of their vineyard in South Australia, but a chance accident changed their lives.

In March 2015, just three months from her 61st birthday, Candice was involved in a serious car accident. She sustained a significant traumatic brain injury, and her injuries were so severe that doctors at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPA) kept her in an induced coma for ten days. It was several weeks before Candice was able to regain full consciousness. Sam and Mina flew in to be by their mother’s side.

The impact of the accident caused Candice to completely lose her independence, and in an instant she had to start relearning actions as simple as feeding herself, brushing her teeth, walking and talking.

In May, two months after the incident, Candice was admitted to Royal Rehab to continue her rehabilitation. Her family was hopeful.

.................................

“We remain optimistic of an excellent recovery, allowing for a good future quality of life,” said Nathan at the time.

.................................

For Candice, recovery was a slow but steady process. The services and support offered during her stay at Royal Rehab allowed Candice to regain her ability to do things often taken for granted – dance, walk unaided, talk for long periods of time, cook, shower and make new memories. Candice made significant progress, but it quickly became clear that recovery was far from simple or straightforward. With each improvement came another setback.

Shortly after arriving at Royal Rehab, Candice developed hydrocephalus and required additional surgery at RPA to drain the additional fluid from her brain. One month later, after making such great strides physically, Candice suffered a devastating fall that fractured a bone in her upper left arm. Fortunately the fracture was minor and Candice, being right-handed, was able to continue her progress, but her journey to recovery was not without its challenges.

By September, six months after her accident, Candice had made enough progress at Royal Rehab that she was “getting back more and more of herself in the complete sense of the word” as Nathan described.

Candice was discharged from Royal Rehab in November 2015 and enjoyed some time in South Australia with her husband where she was finally able to celebrate the 150th birthday of their vineyard. Her ability to travel gave both Candice and Nathan great hope that their future would involve more opportunities to travel, but this was short-lived.

Also in November, Candice developed an infection in her skull bone, which had been removed and reattached during her initial series of surgeries.

The bone removal unfortunately caused a rare reaction that left her, again, unable to act on her own will. After a promising future, Candice was back to experiencing life without the independence she was used to. While her condition has started to improve following a prolonged antibiotic treatment and the replacement of her skull bone in March, there is no telling how long it will be, nor how far she will get. Candice and her family will have to wait and trust in the recovery journey, one that although is ongoing and uncertain, remains filled with hope, potential, and the opportunity to reclaim a full and meaningful life.

“As they told me right at the start, this is a marathon, not a sprint, so a lot of patience is required,” says Nathan. “I am eternally grateful to both RPA and Royal Rehab, for first saving Candice’s life and then helping her get it back.”

Royal Rehab…Creating Better StoriesJust for a moment, imagine your life changed in an instant. You lose the ability to work, communicate with your family, move around and participate in your favourite activities – you lose meaningful connection to your life.

This is what happened to Candice Waks. This is Candice’s Story...

• CENTENNIAL CELLAR •

Seppeltsfield’s history is punctuated with many moments of visionary foresight. Seppeltsfield’s founder, Joseph Seppelt and his eldest son, Benno, were parcularly renowned for their longer term vision for the estate, closely following custodianship principles to ensure a legacy was passed on to future generaons. This is no more evident than Benno Seppelt’s incepon of the Centennial Cellar - a truly unique and unparalleled system of maturing single barrels of vintage Tawny for 100 years before release. In 1866, plans to build a new bluestone cellar were started by Joseph. 12 years later in 1878 and following the passing of his father, Benno completed the stone cellars. In a gesture both unique and inspiraonal, Benno selected a puncheon of his finest wine and gave instrucons that it was not to be boled for 100 years. This single barrel of 1878 Tawny port was to remain maturing in a separate room within the bluestone cellars, untouched in the same locaon 100 years. This special room would go on to become the ‘Centennial Cellar’. The tradion of laying down a barrel of the finest wine from each vintage was connued every year following and connues to do so today. The Centennial Cellar now comprises an unbroken lineage of every vintage from the current year back to 1878. A Century later in 1978, the inaugural 1878 Para Vintage 100 Year Old Tawny was released, instantly becoming an icon of Australian winemaking heritage. Today, the 100 year old Para Tawny remains one of the world’s most collectable wines. It is the only wine in Australia to have ever been awarded 100/100 points from James Halliday and is oen regarded as a true naonal treasure. A living museum of Australian winemaking history and undoubtedly the ‘jewel in the crown’ of the Seppeltsfield estate, the Centennial Cellar is an absolute must see for visitors. Unlike any other winery in the world, Seppeltsfield offers visitors the opportunity to experience the Centennial Cellar, including tasng both the 100 year old Para Tawny and birth year vintages. Vintages are also available for purchase in specially presented gi boxes, which can be personalised with a recipient’s name.
