In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Praise be to Allah, the Cherisher and Sustainer of the Worlds,

and may peace be upon our Honourable Prophet and Messenger

(Muhammad Sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), his family and

companions. May peace be upon all of them.

In the name of Allah, we invoke His name as we embark on this

Most Merciful, and no just estimate have they made of Allah, such

as is due to Him.

Glory be to Him who has brought this under our control, for we

could never have accomplished this by ourselves. And to our Lord,

surely must we return.

O Allah, we ask of You for goodness and piety on this journey, and

from our deeds that meet Your pleasure.

O Allah, lighten our burden on this journey and bridge the distances

between us.

O Allah, You are our companion on this journey and the Protector

for the family we leave behind.

O Allah, verily we seek refuge in You from this journey’s hardship,

from evil eyes and misfortune to befall our household.

And may the Grace of Allah be bestowed upon our leader,

Prophet Muhammad sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam and his family

and companions.

And Praise be to Allah, the Cherisher and Sustainer of the Worlds.

The teaser trailer for Tomorrowland set up its alternate world as a place where all your dreams could come true, but the truth of the trailer and the film is a little different. Both Casey and the audience are sold on a place that never quite came to pass. It’s an unusual

Disney and Brad Bird would like to take you on a journey into the future we’d wished for ourselves, once upon a time. Their vision for Tomorrowland – a place which, rather mischievously, bears more than a little resemblance to a notable Disney property – is born out of the aesthetics and beliefs of the past, which can be seen in the crisp, clean lines of the fanciful technology found in the titular other world, as well as in the architecture, the clothes, and even characters’ hairstyles; all of it harkens back to the ‘50s: a time when being optimistic, dreaming of a better world, and believing it would actually come to pass wasn’t seen as foolish and foolhardy. Tomorrowland is a naïve and innocent world, even a rather earnest one, but more than that, it’s one that’s worth embracing.

The story opens on the scowling visage of Frank Walker (George Clooney), a one-time wunderkind boy inventor who has grown into a middle-aged curmudgeon. Frank believes the world is going to end, and he has a countdown clock to prove it. Enter

Casey Newton (Britt Robertson), a tech-savvy teen who has yet to have hope and optimism beaten out of her by her teachers and the world around her. Casey is surreptitiously given a pin by a young girl, Athena (Raffey Cassidy). Whenever Casey touches the pin the world around her shifts out of true, and she finds herself in a land of wonder. When the pin stops working she sets out to find a way to return, which eventually leads her to the door of one Frank Walker…

ploy, perhaps even a precarious one, but it’s one that makes sense when you consider where the director, Brad Bird, is coming from. The film starts with a 10-minute prologue at the New York World’s Fair of 1964 – 65. It’s here that a young Frank Walker, essentially a stand-in for Bird, shows off his first attempt at creating a jetpack. The suggestion that anything’s possible, that the world can be what you want it to be, is ever present wherever Frank looks. But jump forward 50 years and that belief is gone, and there’s nary a jetpack in sight. Bird, with the help of screenwriter Damon Lindelof, goes on a quest to find out why this potentially wondrous future has failed to come to pass. But whilst searching for the truth he makes sure to deploy all the things he’d once hoped for: giant helper robots, spaceships capable of interstellar flights, artificial intelligence, and, of course, plenty of jetpacks!

So why not join Britt Robertson’s Casey as she sets out not just to find, but to make, the Tomorrowland we all deserve! Catch it on board today.

“Disney and Brad Bird would like to take

you on a journey into the future”

FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD

The strong-willed and independent Bathsheba Everdene considers three very different possible husbands in Victorian England.

11AUGUST 2015

On board this month is a story of love, loss, independence and elegance. Far from the Madding Crowd, the latest adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s novel, sees Bathsheba Everdene (Carey Mulligan) inherit her uncle’s farm and unexpectedly find herself in a position of power over her workers, male and female – something which the former seriously struggle with. In gaining the farm she gains a freedom practically unknown to women in Hardy’s era – she has the freedom to choose her own path.

Bathsheba’s spirited manner captures the attention of three very different men, all of whom would have her for a wife. There’s Francis Troy (Tom Sturridge), a debonair sergeant; William Boldwood (Michael Sheen), a smart and cultured middle-aged bachelor; and Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts), a rather rugged and self-assured sheep farmer.

Far from the Madding Crowd (or FFTMC as I’ll call it henceforth) is set in Victorian England, in the county of Dorset. The film shows us a time when

women were seen as inferior to men – a time which isn’t quite far enough in England’s past – which makes Mulligan’s casting here quite canny, as she has a very modern look and sensibility, which adds to the feeling that her Bathsheba is a woman out of place and time. Thomas Vinterberg (the director) and David Nicholls (the scriptwriter) make Mulligan’s Bathsheba a very modern heroine, and manage it whilst making negligible changes to the source material. Perhaps Hardy was ahead of his time? Or, more likely, his Bathsheba is just enigmatic enough to be interpreted in a number of different ways.

Mulligan is ably supported by Sheen, Sturridge and Schoenaerts – a rather alliterative line-up. Sheen is in particularly fine form as Boldwood, a man slowly fraying at the edges. Although Schoenaerts’ Oak is clearly set up as the man we should be rooting for, it’s hard not to want things to work out for the hollowed-out Boldwood. Sturridge is satisfyingly smarmy as Troy, and finds a more petulant quality to the character than Terence Stamp

did in the 1967 adaptation. In respect to that version, Mulligan said she intentionally steered clear of watching it lest she let Julie Christie’s Bathsheba seep into her own. Fortunately, Vinterbeg et al, do an excellent job of making this latest adaptation very much their own. Some films play more like remakes of earlier films (based on the same novel), then as new adaptations of the source material; fortunately that’s not the case here.

As well as a stand-out cast, the film also has a deeply harmonious soundtrack by Craig Armstrong and gorgeous cinematography by Charlotte Bruus Christensen, which neatly transports you back almost 150 years.

All told, FFTMC feels like a breath of fresh air in a genre that can all too often seem stuffy, fussy and prim. If films featuring carriages, wide skirts and etiquette lessons usually try your patience, be assured that this film is a different beast entirely – even if it does feature one or two of those things...

Catch the film on board today!

19AUGUST 2015

TELEVISION FEATURE: HIGHLIGHT

Everyone’s favourite animated penguins from New York’s Central Park Zoo are back and ready for more action-packed adventures. The BAFTA and Daytime Emmy Award-winning Penguins of Madagascar stars nine of the original characters from the much-loved 2005 animated film Madagascar, as well as a welcome assortment of new faces joining the unique gang of friends!

The TV show follows the epic daily adventures of Skipper, Rico, Kowalski and Private, four brilliantly quick-witted and well-regimented penguins who are ever ready to protect their home at the zoo from danger. The four principals in the show – the troupe of penguins – all have wonderfully different and likeable personalities (which are satisfyingly reminiscent of the energy and manner of the black-and-white comedy heroes of old, such as Buster Keaton, The

Three Stooges, Charlie Chaplin, et al): there’s the crazy and slightly bonkers weapons and explosives specialist Rico, who doesn’t say much besides Kaboom; the serious and cunning, and sometimes seriously cunning, leader of the pack Skipper; the gadget-mad and scientifically minded Kowalski; and, last but not least, there’s the lovable and optimistic Private, the most timid and emotionally sensitive of the bunch. Despite their differences of personality (or perhaps because of them), the team always complete their fiendishly difficult missions, and they do it with great humour. Teamwork and loyalty is a principal theme in the show, and it runs through each episode.

Also sharing the spotlight are three lemur characters – King Julien and his loyal subjects Maurice and Mort – that are prone to hindering more than helping the penguins. The lemurs join

the penguins in a number of fun-filled, hilarious adventures that never go quite as you’d expect. Other characters filling out the line-up include a group of wise monkeys, who offer a lot of sage advice, as well as a subtler brand of humour.

In this month’s episode King Julien sneaks into the gorilla habitat when Bada and Bing receive a shipment of plantains, which results in him and Marlene being forced to go on the run when they give in to temptation and eat all of the plantains.

The madcap quality to each episode is the main reason the show has become such an instant hit with viewers from all over the world. With its vibrant animation, perfect comedy timing and ingenious scripting, there is no doubt that the show will continue to be a firm favourite for kids for a while to come – and you don’t have to be a fan of the original Madagascar film series to enjoy the show! From creating elusive and imaginative gadgets that will blow your mind, to going on mad expeditions outside of the zoo to complete their endless missions, there is no telling what will happen next with this wild bunch of comrades and their funny crew of residents at the zoo. Filled to the brim with fun, action and plenty of hilarious antics, this show is definitely one to watch!

Catch it onboard today!

MUSICRADIO (B787/A319/A320)

Often referred to as history’s most successful female rock ‘n’ roll artist, also credited with a successful acting career, the story of Hall of Famer Tina Turner is certainly one that has taken many twists and turns. Don’t let that take anything away from the enormous success she has generated with her music, culminating in eight Grammy awards; she’s also managed to sell more tickets than any other solo performer in history.

Often when names associated with music – especially single names rather than bands or groups – are selling out worldwide arena tours, there is a sense an act is “playing the game”, and as good as their music may be, a

big marketing push is a major reason for their success. But with Turner this doesn’t seem to be the case. The Queen of Rock n’ Roll has written, released and performed some of the most successful songs of all time, songs that have then been interpreted by some of the most highly respected

artists in other fields, notably Beth Hart and Joe Bonamassa with a rousing rendition of “Nutbush City Limits”; she’s performed with many fellow greats, and has earnt (as mentioned at the top) a well-earned spot in the Hall of Fame.

Originally from the Southern States, born and raised in Tennessee, Turner is now “semi-retired” living near Zurich, Switzerland. She has sold around 100 million records worldwide and has set a standard of the highest regard with her stage presence, songwriting and crowd interaction, overcoming many personal struggles in the process, in a career that has stretched over half a century.

Give her very best a listen today!

“The Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll has

written, released and performed some of the most successful songs of all time...”
