Extent: 19 boxes Creator: Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland Description: Papers of the Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland, mainly the minute books of the general council and the various academy sections. The collection also includes printed reports and papers, as well as some papers relating to academy membership and some memorabilia. Arrangement: Records are divided in 7 sections; Governing Statutes, General Council, Academy Sections, Printed Papers, Reports, Membership and Memorabilia. Within each section further sub-divisions have been made as necessary and items have been arranged chronologically. Administrative History: The Academy of Medicine was founded in 1882, as the result of the amalgamation of four medical societies - the Dublin Society of Surgeons, the Medical Society of the College of Physicians, the Pathological Society and the Dublin Obstetrical Society. The Academy consists of a President and Council, Fellows, Members and Student Associates and the founding Societies became Sections of the Academy. Since its foundation the number of sections has increased and as of 2011 there are 23 sections. The various sections of the academy meet regularly to discuss papers and cases relating to their medical specialty.
