A gorgeous first-facts book about the French painter Claude Monet (1840–1926) that introduces children to this most beloved of Impressionists.

Monet created a beautiful garden at Giverny, filling it with irises, poppies, roses and, of course, water lilies, which he celebrated in his vast and glorious paintings.

Spread by spread, the bright and bold illustrations tell the story of

Monet’s arrival at Giverny, of the vivid Japanese art that inspired him, of the many gardeners he employed, of the large pond he dug for water lilies, and of how he would paint outdoors on large canvases in any weather.

The illustrators Giancarlo Ascari and Pia Valentinis take Monet’s work as their starting point and reimagine it in stunning and unusual ways.

Giancarlo Ascari is the author of the utopian comic book Sarà una bella società (2012), the graphic novels Tutta colpa del ’68 (2008) and Love Stories (2005), which was translated into French. David Remfry mbe ra has lived in the Chelsea Hotel in New York for many years. Having studied at Hull College of Art, he had his first solo show in London in 1973; more than 50 international solo exhibitions have followed. He was elected a Royal Academician in 2006

Despite being at the forefront of high-tech innovation in architecture, Chris Wilkinson obe ra believes passionately in the importance of drawing by hand. Where many practices are now dominated by computer-aided design, Wilkinson still uses drawing as a way to think through ideas, to grapple with design problems and as a tool of communication.

This volume brings together images selected from 20 years of Wilkinson’s sketchbooks,

presenting a fascinating record of the creation of architectural narrative. This unique insight into the working drawings of a hugely influential architect includes sketches for many of his practice’s most groundbreaking works – from structures for the London 2012 Olympics to the restoration and reconstruction of the three Grade II-listed gas holders in King’s Cross, London – as well as a gazetteer with photographs of completed projects.

For decades the printmaker Norman Ackroyd cbe ra has been fascinated by the Hebrides, the archipelago lying to the north-west of mainland Scotland. Inhabited since prehistoric times, some of these islands are now deserted and rarely visited. Ackroyd’s urge to see them for himself has been the impulse behind his many journeys to the region.

This book brings together a selection of the original plein‑air

watercolour sketches, some produced under arduous conditions of weather and sea, which have provided the basis for many of his most memorable etchings. A gazetteer by the artist contains notes about the locations of the sketches.

The title’s publication coincides with exhibitions of the artist’s work at Eames Fine Art, London, and Zillah Bell Art Gallery, Thirsk.

The sculptures of Conrad Shawcross ra explore subjects that lie on the borders of geometry and philosophy, physics and metaphysics.

For the 2015 Summer Exhibition’s Annenberg Courtyard installation Shawcross created a large-scale, immersive work consisting of five cloud-like forms in steel. Made from thousands of tetrahedrons these stand at over six metres high and weigh five tonnes

each. Shawcross explains: ‘The Greeks considered the tetrahedron to represent the very essence of matter. In this huge work I have taken this form as my “brick”, growing these chaotic, diverging forms that will float above the heads of visitors.’

As well as photography of the works in situ, the publication contains working drawings, structural diagrams and a text by the architecture writer Patrick Sykes.
