CALL FOR SCORESINTERNATIONAL COMPOSER PYRAMID (ICP)

SOUNDS NEW Contemporary Music Festival, UK together with Coups de Vents, France are o!er-ing selected composers a unique opportunity to write for the ICP Ensemble and have their works performed in both England and France.

In 2010, composers from France, Belgium, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom were invited to submit works for selection. The selected composers created new works for the ICP Ensemble. A competition (adjudicated by Paul Patterson, Rolf Hind, Philippe Boi-sin and Philippe Hurel) took place in December 2010 in both France and the UK in which two winners, Hugo Ribeiro and Benjamin Oliver, were announced.

This year, these composers will be having their works performed in Sounds New and recorded for broadcast by BBC Radio 3.

In 2011, this competition extends its boundary to Europe.

For more details and for informa-tion on how to apply please visit our website: www.international-composerpyramid.org or contact the Sounds New o"ce on 0044 1227 780 800 or via [email protected]

This project is being funded by INTERREG IVA 2 Mers Seas Zeeën – European Union.

The music of Arvo Pärt has beguiled listeners and musicians, be they a#cionados of new music or not. Its gentleness cocoons, its sonorities enchant, its simple melodies remain in one’s mind and its harmonies sooth souls. More importantly, the music’s intent reaches deep. It is with great pleasure that Sounds New welcomes Arvo Pärt to Canterbury, where he will hear performances of his music and be present at UK premieres, not least of his new Adam’s Lament, which will be performed by the incomparable Choir of King’s College Cambridge together with the Philharmonia.

While Arvo Pärt may be the most well known composer from the Baltic, his music is inevitably only a tip of an iceberg in a region of incredible invention and creative energy. Baltic composers are having a profound e!ect on the music world, but while many Baltic composers are in$uencing others, we, in the UK, are not always lucky to hear this music live and in context. This year’s festival addresses this and presents this extraordinary new work in concerts given by leading British performers as well as by Baltic musicians.

and the Danish Horn Trio, jazz musicians from Sweden’s Sibelius Academy and Swedish jazz singer Viktoria Tolstoy, Poland’s exciting Amadrums are a few examples of the remarkable artists coming to Canterbury, all bringing the best of their countries’ music.

British musicians include jazz ambassadors the BBC Big Band and contemporary music ambassadors the London Sinfonietta. Peppered throughout the festival programme, you will also hear some of the excellent new compositions created by young composers on the International Composer Pyramid project.

Making all this possible are Arts Council England, embassies and cultural institutes from Baltic countries and a range of enlightened sponsors who hold creation dear. Please read the list of sponsors and donors as they are important to us all. It is also wonderful that our partnership with the BBC is developing yet further. In addition to major concerts being recorded by BBC Radio 3, Sounds New is thrilled that this year’s concert with the BBC Big Band will be reaching Radio 2 listeners.

Baltic + takes you on a voyage of discovery in which you can delight in new worlds, new sounds and new colours. You will be enchanted and invigorated, moved and elated. Over the past two years the Sounds New team has discovered the glories of the Baltic. Yesterday we listened, today we love!

The Boot Lagoon present their own infectiously rhythmic new compositions.
