The Routine Immunization (RI) program in India is part of the Universal Immunization Program. This program has the distinction of being the world’s largest immunization programs due to its scope and quantity.

The Routine Immunization Program in India is also one of the longest running intervention measures for health taken by the Government of India. Since its launch in 1985, there have been multiple changes in the program as well as untold benefits to the community at large. he vaccine cold chain and delivery system, as well as the logistics of delivery, has been systematized and expanded. A vast network of sites has been established which serve as outreach sites for the program. An alternate model of vaccine delivery has also been created.

There have been stronger measures taken for the complete Eradication of the polio virus. There has been numerous need-based Training programs organized for the medical staff as well as other health personnel and administrative staff.

The year 2012 to 2013 was declared by the Government of India to be the Year of Intensification of Routine Immunization. The target of this program was the districts and states which were not covered adequately in the previous years. The objective of the Global Immunization Vision and Strategy was to achieve at least 80% coverage of all vaccinations to the target group in the district level and at least 90% coverage of the vaccinations to the target group in the national level.

To achieve this, the routine immunization program aimed at increasing public awareness through community advocacy at both the district and national levels, increased mobilization of social resources and media, program reviews conducted on a regular basis, improving the vaccine delivery and cold chain system as well as the logistics of vaccine delivery supply chains, special immunization weeks to help people catch up with any missed vaccines, as well as increased collaborations between the government and non-governmental agencies and civic bodies to work towards achieving the same goal.
