CUTTING EDGEVintage, art and (fashion) design

“Discovering a new vintage boutique makes me happy. I wear lots of jackets and dresses that belonged to my grandmother, accessorised with new items.”

If there’s one city in the Netherlands that’s known for its lively creative scene, it’s Rotterdam. Designers, artists, DJs, musicians, furniture makers, food designers, skaters, party organisers: they refuse to be confined by categories, love collaborating, and simply start their own shop if they feel like it. Less talk, more action. There’s lots of inspiring shops here, selling things that aren’t on offer anywhere else.

1 Smaakatelier Zoet & ZoutDelicatessen and lifestyle shop in one. Visit the ‘taste studio’ for homemade cake, frittatas, lasagne and other Italian delicacies, or for fun gift ideas. How about a nice organic limoncello, or an exceptional piece of jewellery by Coeurblonde?

CASUALCHEMISTRYBig brands and street style

“We follow fashion closely and choose our style based on what’s happening. Sometimes it’s achingly feminine, while other trends are more casual.”

In a world metropolis like Rotterdam, fashion is on every street corner. You only have to look around you to gain an impression of the many different styles that co-exist, sometimes clashing cheerfully. On Lijnbaan and in Beurstraverse – the sunken shopping concourse also known locally as the ‘shopping gutter’ – all the major chain stores have a branch, including H&M, Zara and the Body Shop. Around that concentration of big-name stores, the whole area offers loads of shops that are more than worth a visit.

30 De BijenkorfIf the Bijenkorf doesn’t have it, it’s probably not sold anywhere. Just to toss out a few famous fashion brands sold here: Replay, Supertrash, MET Jeans, Armani and Tommy Hilfiger. Besides menswear shops that have been a household name for 100 years (or longer!), new stores are opening every year. Rotterdam has more and more exceptional shops run by young entrepreneurs, selling designer clothing by relatively unknown labels. You’re certain to come home with something wonderful.

“I know exactly what I’m looking for: I keep a close watch on my favourite clothing brands and know which LPs are missing from my record collection.”

Unexpected souvenirs

TYPICALDUTCH

Looking for an authentic Dutch gift? There are various stores to explore. Here in the Netherlands, we have quite a lot to be ‘groos’ of. Groos, that’s how we say proud in Rotterdam. We’re proud of our cheese, of course. Our HEMA smoked sausage. And the Jamin candy store. If you’re looking for Rotterdam souvenirs, consider fashion, design, photography, Feyenoord memorabilia, and yes, farm-fresh products from inside our own city.
