Kate Hissett said: “The Church islinked to the charity Tearfund’s projectsin an area around Mount Kenya, whereassistance isgiven to someof theworld’s poor-est people.Theseprojects areground-breaking, asthey use agrass rootsapproach tohelping oth-ers by en-couragingcommunitiesto identifytheir ownneeds andchallenges and the resources they needto mobilise, in order to tackle them.”Projects developed through the pro-gramme include water access, betternutrition, increased food security, im-proved healthcare and education, jobcreation, orphan welfare and care of theenvironment.

FITSTEPS IS the new dancefitness phenomenon thatwill see you dance like thestars of Strictly Come Danc-ing and get fit at the sametime.

Participants are able to waltz, jive, cha cha, paso doble, tango and sambaand rumba without a partner or evendancing experience. The aim of the classis to create a really fun, energetic andeffective way to keep fit.

The fitness craze mixes Ballroom withLatin dancing and was designed by thestars of Strictly Come Dancing NatalieLowe, Ian Waite and Britain’s most suc-cessful swimmer, Mark Foster.

Great Britain swimmer Mark Foster, who was converted to dance fitness said:“You’ve got a double whammy. You’removing around and getting fit andhealthy, having fun but also you’re learn-ing proper steps from Strictly.”

Local Instructor Lisa Cluer has beenprofessionally trained by Natalie and Ian.The stars were determined to keep thequality of FitSteps high.

Strictly Come Dancing professionalIan Waite said: “We wanted to makesure that all our coaches are at a certainlevel, and that they deliver the steps inthe correct way. For people who havewatched Strictly, when they dance Fit-Steps there will be steps when they sayto each other ‘Yes, I’ve seen that stepbefore on the show’.”

Ian added that several people havecome to him saying that the class “hadchanged their life” and it preventedthem enduring the dreariness of exer-cise.

“This is entertaining, and you feel asthough you’re having fun doing dancesteps. You don’t realise that you areactually burning lots of calories. We’veproven that you can burn about 600calories in a 40 minute lesson” he said.

Lisa’s classes are at Stonehill School,Birstall, Birstall Social Club and theMemorial Hall, Thurcaston. Contact Lisaon 07850 759170, [email protected]

probably the only time you will bepleased to see a speed gun pointed atyou” said Ian.

Other attractions include hot rodsand custom cars, vintage vehicles, livemusic, real ales, local food, face paint-ing, children’s activities and a HawaiianLimbo competition.

Ian said: “Many thanks to the Duffinfamily at Stonehurst Farm for allowingus to use their fields across the river forthe festival and also for the loan of lotsof straw bales for the soap box racing.

Without their help the Mount-

sorrel Revivalwould be a much diminished event.”

There are still some spaces for stallsand attractions throughout the village –details are on the websitewww.mountsorrel-revival.co.uk

Donations sought forheritage centre

The MRP have been busy fundraising– they need to raise £56,000 to releasea grant of £540,000 from Lafarge Tar-mac’s Landfill Communities Fund.

Project leader Steve Cramp said: “Theresponse from the public has been tre-mendous. We are now within £16,000of the target we need to get work start-

ed. It is, however , vital that we achieve this sooner rather than later. The wholeproject, as a condition of the major grant, must be completed by July next year butwe have two old granite buildings to dismantle and reconstruct stone by stone aspart of the heritage centre. This will be a tough ask but is very much doable if wecan start early enough.

“To help raise this figure a ‘Brick Appeal’ has been launched where you cansponsor the bricks that will be used to combine, into one unified building, the differ-ent structures that form the core of the Heritage Centre. The names of sponsors willappear on a large commemorative plaque that will feature in the tearoom at theCentre. The price of sponsoring an individual brick has been set at £50. We will, ofcourse, be grateful for donations of any size!”

The latest large contributions have been £5000 from the Rothley based Harry

THE CONSTRUCTION of a heritage centre, museum and tearoom on Swithland Lane by the Mountsorrel RailwayProject (MRP) could start this summer.

Hames Cottage charity, which is adminis-tered by Rothley Parish Council, and£2000 from Rothley History Society.

The MRP will shortly be submitting aplanning application for the project. Aspart of a consultation process therewere two open days at the site whichwere attended by over 350 people.

Steve Cramp said: “There was univer-sal praise for what has already beenachieved with the Mountsorrel Railway, the Nunckley Nature Trail and what isplanned with the Heritage Centre.”

Although an ancient law, ChancelRepair Liability still has relevance todayand it has been in the media recently.CRL is the right of the church to seekmoney for repairs from the owners ofsome local properties. People frequentlyhave to decide whether they need toinsure against it when buying a newhome. Therefore the PCC of RothleyParish Church want to make public ourrecent research and decision to notretain this financial interest in propertiesin Rothley.

Chancel Repair Liability dates fromRothley’s Act of Enclosure in 1782 andestablished a responsibility for thosehaving received ownership of the landsknown as the Great Tithe, and theirsuccessors, for the upkeep of the churchchancel. Recent legislation has meantthat PCCs have to identify to which prop-erties Cancel Repair Liability applies and

We all know the cuts are coming, butin Leicestershire it would appear that thescale of the cuts are hidden in plainsight. Few people are aware about thedevastation these cuts will bring to manyservices. These are services we current-ly take for granted.

In your last edition I noticed youmentioned the risk to our local librariesand I am writing to raise awarenessabout more consultations about cuts toservices which are there to protect themost vulnerable in our community.

The scale of the proposed cuts isunprecedented: the budget for support-ing independence for older people is setto be cut by 76% and the budget forHomelessness support is set to be cut by78%.

This reduction in preventative servic-es will cause hardship for many in ourcommunity and will cost more in thelong run as it leaves other, more expen-sive, services to pick up the pieces.

The consultation about these cuts canbe found at:

http://www.leics.gov.uk/prevention_service_consultation_document.pdf

There are many other consultationsbeing carried out by LeicestershireCounty Council, please be aware andmake your voice heard.

YOUR SAY... register their intention to retain ChancelRepair Liability with the Land Registry sothat owners can be informed by themand it can appear on property searches. If the PCC does not register this interestthen Chancel Repair Liability will ceaseto apply when the property next changeshands through purchase.

Our church historian, Terry Sheppardhas reviewed archive documents and hasconcluded that Chancel Repair Liabilityapplies to the owners of the land ofSouthfields Farm and the Golf Club andnot to other properties in Rothley.

The PCC decision on 20th May 2013was to not register such an interest inthese two properties and have informedthe current owners. We feel to use legalmeasures to compel those not necessari-ly members of our fellowship to main-tain the fabric of the local churchchancel would risk losing the goodwilland support of the local communitywhich is essential to our work andwould hinder our core mission as achurch which is to share the good newsof God’s love shown through Christ.

A MEMORIAL sculpture hasbeen erected in Rothleycemetery to remember thelives of the paupers who areburied there.

Rothley's Heritage Warden MarionVincent was looking through the buriallists while researching the cemeterychapel. She said: “I was shocked to seethat the first burials of the paupers wasright at the bottom of the cemetery, wellaway from the other burials.

“It really upset me that they could beconsidered of unfit status to be buriednear to those who could pay and havetheir graves marked with a stone.”

The burials were of paupers from thenearby Barrow-upon-Soar workhouse, built in 1840 to accommodate 300 in-mates.

Marion said: “I wantedto provide a memorial tothose men, women andchildren who died in theBarrow workhouse so thattheir graves will be re-membered into the fu-ture. The workhouse wasa very real threat and asa young child I remem-ber it being talked about.Like the two world wars,we must never forget.”

After contacting an organisation thathelps commission memorials, Marionfound a sculptor, Geoffrey Aldred, whoagreed to produce a design. It features aworkhouse couple with their child in thecentre, linked by their arms keeping thefamily together.

The finished sculpture, carved fromHopton Wood stone quarried in Derby-shire, was erected on June 4 beside thepaupers’ graves.

The local Harry Hames charity pro-vided the full amount of £4000 for theproject to go ahead.

A GROUP of local people arelooking at ways Rothleylibrary could be run by thecommunity.

The library is threatened with closureafter Leicestershire County Council an-nounced cuts to the library service – itsays it will continue to fund 16 of themost used libraries but that 36 faceclosure if community groups are notformed to run them.

Rothley Parish Council has formed aworking party to explore how a commu-nity library might operate if the CountyCouncil goes ahead with its plans.

Parish Councillor Olwen Jones said:“Rothley Parish Council believes thevillage library service has a valuable roleto play in the community and is pleasedto support the formation of a workingparty to explore how it might be run bya community group in the future.”

The group is gathering informationfrom existing library users about howthey use the library and a questionnairehas been placed at the Post Office, Brad-ley’s, the Mercury News shop and theCo-op.

Views can also be sent [email protected] to the Parish Office, in the RothleyCentre, Mountsorrel Lane.

Your views are being sought on:• opening hours• facilities you now use and any new

ones you would like• ages of any children in the family

who use it• improvements you would suggest• ideal location eg as now, or else-

where“We would also like to hear from

anyone keen to be involved in theseexploratory stages, or anyone interestedin becoming a volunteer if a communitylibrary is formed eventually” said Olwen.

The County Council is carrying out apublic consultation on its plans and saysthat 2500 people have participated sofar, with more than 500 people attend-ing public meetings.

The County is looking to save£800,000 a year from its current£5.6million libraries budget.

The college has begun a con-sultation about the possible re-dundancies which would see theschool’s support staff cut by 55per cent.

There are currently 113 peo-ple employed as support staff –these include posts such as tech-nicians, premises officers, clean-ers, admin assistants, receptionists and catering staff.

The potential job losses aredue to a reduction in studentnumbers. In September 2013Anstey Martin High Schoolchanged to an 11-16 schoolresulting in a reduction of theirstudents coming to Longslade.

The college says betweenSeptember 2012 and September2016 this will amount to a re-duction of 53 per cent in studentnumbers overall. As fundingdepends on student numbers,Longslade anticipates a signifi-cant reduction in its funding of£2.36million between 2012/13and 2016/17.

Any redundancies, which ifthey go ahead will not happenuntil January, will only affect theschool’s support staff. Thenumber of teachers has beenreduced by not replacing thosewho have left and through short-er contracts.

Stonehill and Longslade areexpected to merge into a single11-18 year through school andbecome part of a multi-academytrust led by Beauchamp College,Oadby.

GOVERNMENT GRANTS of up to £6000 for solid wall insula-tion have now become available as part of the Green Dealinitiative.

MORE THAN 40 jobs at Longslade College are at risk.

ROTHLEY PARK Golf Club recently held the Matt Cort Chal-lenge Golf Day.

ROTHLEY PARK golf club hosted the annual LOROS golf day inMay, and 23 teams participated.

IN MAY members set forth from Cropston and Rothley via coach,to spend a very pleasant few hours at Carsington Water.

First call was the restaurant to enjoy arestorative cup of coffee before walkinground the exhibition area designed partic-ularly for the education of children andinterested adults, on the collection andpurification of water for recycling for do-mestic use and industry.

In addition was a museum outlining thehistory of the creation of the machinesinvented and produced by Richard Ark-wright. It was a very happy and successfulouting.

At the June meeting it felt more likesummer had arrived. It certainly felt thatway within the membership which wasbuzzing with news of recently taken holi-days and those to come, not to mentionthe eagerly awaited next month’s Strawber-ry Cream Tea at the “Blue Bell Inn”, inRothley

Continuing on after the club’s “Busi-ness” we experienced a very special mo-ment – a presentation to Mrs DianaWhatton in gratitude for eleven years offaithful service running the “Bring andBuy” table and supplying for every con-ceivable occasion, quantities of beautifullymade cakes and especially, cream me-ringues! I think the inserted photographsays it all, taken by fellow member Mrs.Gill Jefferson, our resident photographer.

Our entertainment then followed, pro-vided by four members of the Leicester-shire Speakers club. Three ladies and onebrave gentleman told a total of eight sto-ries on which the membership had todecide whether they were “true or false”.We all had cards on which, after eachstory, we had to mark our conclusion, which took a great deal of concentration. The end result was given by each speakerand prizes were presented not only to thehighest points, but down throughout. Veryworthwhile prizes were gratefully received.

After all this pleasurable hard work, themembership then tucked into a multitudeof cakes to consume with refreshing cupsof tea.

LOUGHBOROUGH’S CARILLONis not only the town’s prin-cipal landmark: it is also awar memorial and home tothe War Memorial Museum.

In June the Museum’s Mel Gouldgave a tour to a group of members andguests of our Society, as well as enlight-ening and entertaining us.

A carillon was selected to be the warmemorial by a controversial public bal-lot, which was based on the amount ofmoney pledged ratherthan a simple count ofthe votes cast. Thecarillon favoured by thetown traders thus pre-vailed over the morepopular choice of amedical facility. Thearchitect’s first designproved too expensive sothe design actually builtwas an alternative close-ly modelled on a clocktower in Moulins,France. Taylor’s BellFoundry cast all 47 bells and contribut-ed substantially to the cost of theproject. The opening ceremony tookplace in 1923 with music written for theoccasion by Edward Elgar.

Many years later, it was thought inap-propriate that the war memorial buildingwas being used by the council to storegardening machinery and a campaignbegan to turn it into a museum. Nowthree floors are packed with exhibitsfrom both World Wars and representingall the armed services.

Mel told us about a zeppelin raid onLoughborough in 1916, in which tencivilians in the Rushes area were killed. The intended target was probably Liver-pool but zeppelins flew so high thatnavigation was difficult. The reason that

Loughborough was bombed insteadmight have been because, unlike thelarger industrial cities, it was notblacked out.

The first floor is dedicated to theLeicestershire Yeomanry, first founded in1794 and later given the title “PrinceAlbert’s Own”. The room is dominatedby life-sized models of a horse and cav-alry officer. It contains memorabilia of“Songster”, which was one of the fewwar-horses to return after the FirstWorld War and became a kind of mas-cot for the regiment. The second floor

contains displays of armaments and acabinet dedicated to the U.S. AirborneDivision that was stationed locally duringthe Second World War.

We saw the “clavier” keyboard fromwhich the carillonneur plays the instru-ment by pressing wooden pegs with herhands and feet. Finally, more steps ledus through the bell chamber and outonto the balcony, providing fine viewsover Loughborough and the countrysidebeyond.

The next of our summer outings willbe a guided walk around historic Whit-wick on the evening of July 15. Visitorsare welcome: call 236 7365 for details.
