Weekly News and Announcements

Hello Rotarians and Friends! I hope all of you are enjoying these final few

weeks of summer. Time has flown by and I find it hard to believe it’s time

for children to be going back to school. I can remember as a kid how sad I

was that my summer vacation was coming to a close, while at the same time,

happily looking forward to going to the Canfield Fair with my brothers and

sisters. I’m sure there are a lot of kids feeling the same way about now.

We had a great meeting on Wednesday with lots of information shared. I

need to talk to President Julia, though, about the importance of a short

newsletter….to me anyway. The more we do during the meeting, the more

thinking and typing I need to do…I may have to put in for overtime this

week!

My personal thanks go out to Dominic Mararri for filling in as our

photographer in Nick Verina’s absence. He asked me before the meeting

started what I wanted in the way of pictures. I told him to take a picture

of everyone who speaks…since he was one of those who did, he took a selfie!

Too funny!!

Chris Shape is continuing with Fellowship and everyone is asking “how in the

world did he end up with a five-Wednesday month?!” Just one more week to

go and John Robertson takes over….a thought that comes with a different

kind of trepidation. Just kidding….

Rotarians with Makeups: One Makeup – Campolito, Pape, Straniak, Vaughn,

Royster, Iannucci, Verina, Bednar, D. Sauer, B. Sauer, Brown, and Levy. Two

Makeups – Thompson, Bollas, Oblinger, and Shape. Three Makeups – Surin,

Matheson, and Wetstein.

Guests and Visiting Rotarians – Ted Stazak from Edward Jones and Jane

Midgely from The Cure Starts Now Foundation.

Expressions of Concern – John Zimomra is coming home from the hospital

this week and is slowly improving. According to his wife, Stephanie, he will

be having physical therapy at home over the next few weeks. We are sure

he would appreciate the occasional note or card as he works to regain his

strength. I, for one, miss seeing him in the audience. He always sits in the

front, so I get to see him react to some of the antics at the podium. I miss

his laughter and the twinkle in his eye. I can’t wait until he comes back.

Louisiana Disaster Relief – Members were asked today for feedback about

our providing financial support to aid in disaster relief following the recent

flooding in Louisiana. Members overwhelmingly supported the idea that the

Club Board of Directors consider an appropriate donation to be given

through the Salem Rotary Club Foundation. Funding through Rotary

Districts will be used for home repairs.

Chocolate Festival – Members were reminded again

today by Chairperson Teri Surin that Chocolate

Festival is just around the corner. It will be held on

Thursday, October 13th, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at St.

Demetrios on Atlantic Avenue. We need sponsor-

ships, auction items and food vendors. For those

who are new to our Club, there are several sponsorship levels available with

various benefits to the donor in each. If you want to get information about

how you can become a sponsor, contact John Campolito. Tickets are $15 for

individuals, $25 for couples.

Quaker Steak and Lube Bike Night – Chris Shape reported that there is

one more Bike Night to be held on Friday, September 30th. Anyone who can

help is encouraged to let Chris know.

Social Event at the Scrappers – The Social Committee is inviting all

Rotarians to attend the baseball game at Eastwood Field on Thursday,

September 1st. Game time is 7:00 p.m. This is Buck Night…a buck for

tickets, a buck for beer, and a buck for hot dogs. Members need not

respond to us, just show up and join other Rotarians for a great night of fun

and fellowship.

Warren Homecoming Concert – Marketing of the homecoming concert is

now underway. It will be held on Saturday, September 24th, as part of the

Warren Homecoming weekend featuring the Ohio Players. The Ohio Players

are an American funk and R&B band, most popular in the 1970s. They are

best known for their songs "Fire" and "Love Rollercoaster". Gold

certifications, records selling at least five hundred thousand copies, were

awarded to the singles "Funky Worm", "Skin Tight", "Fire", and "Love

Rollercoaster"; plus to their albums Skin Tight, Fire, and Honey. On August

17, 2013, The Ohio Players were inducted into the inaugural class of the

Official R&B Music Hall of Fame that took place at Cleveland State

University in Cleveland, Ohio. We are delighted to sponsor this group and

encourage all Rotarians to make plans to purchase tickets when they go on

sale. The concert will be held at Packard Music Hall.

RI International Convention – As you may know, next year our club will be

celebrating its 100th anniversary. Julia Wetstein would love to have a booth

Code of

Conduct

As a Rotarian, I will:

Act with integrity and high ethical standards in my personal

and professional

life.

Deal fairly with others

and treat them and their

occupations with respect.

Use my

professional skills through

Rotary to mentor young people, help those with

special needs, and improve

people’s quality of life

in my community

and the world.

Avoid behavior that

reflects adversely on

Rotary or other

Rotarians.

at the Convention in the House of Friendship to let our closest 35,000+

friends know what we have accomplished in our first 100 years. The

Convention will be held from June 10 to 14, 2017. Expect to hear more

about the upcoming convention in Atlanta, GA as the year goes by.

Warren Family Mission Fund Raiser – Dominic

Mararri announced today that the Warren

Mission will be holding a Harley Davidson Bike Ride on

August 27th. Funds will be used to support the efforts

of Teen Challenge’s drug addiction recovery program.

While this event has already been held, it’s never too

late to support such a worthy cause. Teen Challenge holds special meaning

for Dominic who went through the program and is a testament to the

program’s success. Please see him at an upcoming meeting if you can help.

The Cure Starts Now – Jane Midgely attended today

to tell us about a Bocce Social that will be held at the

MVR in Youngstown to support pediatric brain cancer

research. This event will be held on Saturday,

September 17, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tickets are $30

per person. Anyone wishing to participate can contact

Jane at 330-507-9427 or go online to make a donation or reservations at

http://chapters.thecurestartsnow.org/ohio---northeast.

Tipping – A reminder to not forget to tip our busboy, Jason, and the other

members of the wait staff. We have the tip box in the meeting room for

Jason who spends quite a bit of time after the meetings cleaning up our

tables. For the members who order lunch at the bar and have it delivered

to the meeting room, don’t forget to add a bit on to your bill for those who

take such good care of you.

A Programming Note – Julia Wetstein announce a couple of weeks ago that

sometime in the next couple of months we would have some speakers from

the organization helping victims of acid attacks in Uganda. One will be the

fund administrator, Victoria, who will join us on October 12th, and the

second will be Hanifa, the woman we saw in the documentary film by

Leonard Lies. We are still waiting to hear when she can join us. Please

mark your calendars and make plans to attend.

Speaking of Uganda – The Rotary International President in 2018-2019

will Be Samuel Frobisher Owori, a businessman from the Rotary Club of

Kampala, Uganda. He has a truly impressive resume, as one would expect,

and Julia has high hopes that he will be supportive of our efforts to help

the victims of acid attacks in his home country. Knowing Julia, they will be

Rotary IS NOT on the Road AGAIN!

The tour scheduled for September 14th at GM in Lordstown has been

cancelled!!!!! So…..don’t go there. Report to Enzo’s as usual for our

meeting that week.

Welcome Back Deb Burn!

Former Warren Rotarian Deb Burn was inducted today

as a new Rotarian. Deb works at Middlefield Bank in

Cortland as a Vice President of Commercial Lending.

Her sponsor was George Thompson. Deb has served on

the Club Board of Directors in the past and been

an active participant in Rotary events and activities.

We are absolutely delighted to welcome her back.

Rotary Homecoming Parade Float

Andy Bednar announced today that (once we receive the invitation) we will

be putting a Rotary float in the Homecoming Parade being organized by

Warren Kiwanis. Diane Sauer is donating the use of a vehicle and George

Thompson volunteered a flatbed trailer and the location to house the float

until parade day. More information will be shared soon.

Trumbull Family Fitness

Paulette Eddington joined us today to tell us more

about Trumbull Family Fitness (TFF), formerly the

Warren YMCA.

Paulette has worked for the Y (and now TFF) for

approximately nine years and is credited with starting the Kids Club

program. She is a YSU graduate and a past President of Warren Kiwanis

(but we don’t hold that against her!) She currently serves as the TFF

Page 6: ROTARY NOTES - Microsoft...Speaking of Uganda – The Rotary International President in 2018-2019 will Be Samuel Frobisher Owori, a businessman from the Rotary Club of Kampala, Uganda

Director and has been instrumental in the rebranding of the YMCA to the

organization it is today.

The Mission of the TFF is “to establish and maintain an atmosphere that

facilitates physical, emotional and spiritual growth which will enhance the

quality of life for individuals and families in our community”. As Paulette

explained while they still maintain their pool and fitness facilities, the TFF

is now more than that. It has become a safe place where members can

interact and socialize with others while participating in programs that

improve their quality of life.

The TFF has undertaken renovations over the past several years that make

the facility attractive and safe for those who use them.

The Kids Club is an after school and summer program that teaches children

how to win with integrity and lose with grace. It is designed to give them

every opportunity to succeed through tutoring in STEM, help with

homework, and extracurricular activities. Approximately 75 to 100

students participate each summer and an average of 25 students are

involved in the after school program.

Membership continues to grow and Paulette is optimistic that it

will easily exceed that of last year. Members were encouraged to get to

know the new TFF and support it in whatever way they can. For those

wishing additional information, they can go to

www.trumbullfamilyfitness.com .

We thank Paulette for joining us today and wish her and her members all

the success in the world. They ARE truly an asset to the community.
